In 2010 Obama Admitted 8 or 9 Million Americans Would Lose Health Care Plans

President Obama admitted in 2010 that 8 or 9 million Americans will lose their health care plan due to Obamacare.
Obama made the comments during a White House summit on Obamacare.

The Daily Caller reported:

President Barack Obama admitted in 2010 that 8 or 9 million Americans would lose their existing health insurance plans under Obamacare.

“The 8 to 9 million people that you refer to that might have to change their coverage — keep in mind out of the 300 million Americans that we’re talking about — would be folks who the CBO, Congressional Budget Office, estimates would find the deal in the exchange better,” Obama said to Rep. Eric Cantor at a February 25, 2010 White House summit on health insurance regulation.

Israeli commandos fired from air in 2010 Gaza flotilla raid – former US Marine

A former US Marine-turned activist told a Turkish court on Thursday that Israeli commandos had opened fire from a helicopter on a Gaza-bound aid ship three years ago. The claim contradicts Israeli’s claim that the soldiers had acted in self-defense.

On May 31, 2010, Israeli naval commandos using speedboats and helicopters boarded the Turkish-owned Mavi Marmara, part of the ‘Gaza Freedom Flotilla’ that was attempting to break the Israeli-Egyptian blockade of the Gaza Strip and deliver humanitarian relief.

In the ensuing melee, eight Turkish nationals and one Turkish American were killed, and many were wounded. Ten Israeli commandos were also wounded, one of them seriously.

The incident sparked a deep diplomatic crisis between Israel and Turkey – the former a committed ally of the United States, the latter a full-fledged NATO member waiting for membership in the European Union. Today, relations between the two remain tense.

Now, a trial being held in absentia in Istanbul against Israel’s former Chief-of-Staff Gabi Ashkenazi and three other senior commanders may aggravate bilateral relations even more between the two former allies.

Kenneth O’Keefe, an Irish-Palestinian and former US marine who was aboard the humanitarian vessel during the conflict, told the Turkish hearing, which convened in June of last year, that Israeli soldiers had started shooting from the helicopter while it was still in the air.

“Within five to 10 minutes after the Israeli helicopter approached the ship, I ran into Cevdet Kiliclar’s dead body on the deck, before any Israeli commando had boarded the vessel,” O’Keefe said, referring to one of the Turkish activists.

“He must have been shot from the air. After seeing Kiliclar’s dead body, I went upstairs to the top of the deck and saw several people lying on the ground, wounded or dead.”

Israel has dismissed the Turkish proceedings as a political “show trial” of four former IDF commanders.

The 144-page indictment lists “inciting murder through cruelty or torture” and “inciting injury with firearms” among the charges against the now-retired Israeli officers and seeks life sentences for the commandos.

O’Keefe’s testimony supports Turkey’s official findings of the incident, described in a September 2011 UN report, which said Israeli commandos had fired upon the activists before boarding the ship.

“IDF personnel began firing on the Mavi Marmara from both the speedboats and helicopters before boarding had commenced….Two passengers were killed by shots from the helicopters before the first soldiers had boarded the vessel,” the Turkish Commission report said.

Turkey’s version of events, however, clashes with that of Israel’s version, also summarized in the UN report.

“Three ‘flash bang’ stun grenades were thrown from the helicopter before and during the descent, but no shots were fired. The soldiers from the first helicopter were met with an extreme level of violence from a group of passengers on the vessel,” according to the Israeli position.

Turkey expelled Israel’s ambassador after the 2011 UN report, which concluded, seemingly in favor of the Israeli position, that while Israel had used “unreasonable force” during its raid on the Turkish ship in international waters, its blockade on Gaza was legal.

Ankara announced its demands for normalizing bilateral relations with its neighbor – an apology, compensation and Israel ending its embargo on Gaza.

In March, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu phoned Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan and apologized for the deaths of the nine activists, pledging to reach an agreement on compensation for their families.

The hearing has been adjourned until March 27, 2014.

Can Coakley leave 2010 fiasco behind?

Martha Coakley barreled into the Massachusetts governor’s race this week with an ace political team, loads of name recognition, solid poll numbers — and some hefty baggage.

The Bay State’s Democratic attorney general is back in the national spotlight, three years after her shocking Senate loss to Republican Scott Brown in one of the bluest states in the nation. Massachusetts observers say she will be a formidable gubernatorial candidate in the crowded Democratic primary — if she can convince voters and party insiders that she’s learned a thing or two from that defeat.

“I knew Martha before 2010, I knew Martha after 2010,” said Deb Kozikowski, a vice chairwoman of the Massachusetts Democratic State Committee who is committed to another candidate in the race but spoke highly of Coakley. “The campaigner I saw before and after is the campaigner I was familiar with. What we saw in 2010 seemed to me to be an aberration. I sure hope it was.”

In her tussle with Brown, now a former senator, Coakley was criticized for appearing complacent, skipping handshake sessions and striking some voters as out of touch. She looks determined now to show that’s all in the past.

Coakley kicked off her run for governor this week with a frenetic few days of campaigning — “from Newton to North Adams,” a senior campaign strategist said — aiming to hit 18 stops in three days.

“That might eclipse any month she had during the Senate race, frankly,” said Boston-based Democratic strategist Mary Anne Marsh. “Actions speak louder than words. She’s showing people she’s learned some lessons.”

Coakley is competing against a slew of other highly qualified candidates in the primary, including State Treasurer Steve Grossman, who currently looks to be another top contender; Donald Berwick, a former administrator of the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services; and Juliette Kayyem, a former assistant secretary at the Department of Homeland Security, among others.

“The most significant challenge we face is creating jobs and economic security across the Commonwealth,” Grossman said in a statement. “I am the only Democratic candidate who offers a lifetime of proven leadership in strengthening our economy.”

Likely GOP nominee Charlie Baker, who served in the administrations of two Republican governors, is mounting another bid for the position after losing to Democratic Gov. Deval Patrick in 2010. Baker, a businessman, is a fiscal conservative and social moderate, and this time around is stressing his commitment to bipartisanship.

Gus Bickford, a longtime Bay State Democrat and former chairman of the state party, said Coakley’s candidacy will reshape the Democratic primary. She enters the contest near or at the front of the pack, he said.

“I think it’s a significant, it’s a very big game-changer,” he said. “She’s been polling as one of the most popular Democrats in the state. So it adds another front-runner to the race at the beginning. But it definitely sets a stage where the current treasurer, Steve Grossman, now has a significant opponent who is well-known across the state, which was not the case with the other candidates being mentioned.”

Bickford, who is currently unaligned in the race, dismissed concerns about the legacy of the 2010 Senate race as “inside baseball.”

“Voters don’t care” about her loss to Brown, echoed a senior national Democrat familiar with the race. “I think she will have to prove to those in Washington and Massachusetts who are cynical about her — and in part for good reason — that she’s learned the lessons of the Senate race. The first proof point you have to look at is the attorney general’s race.”

Images Of Taksim Square Tear Gas Usher In 2010 Greek PTSD Flashback For Market

Moments ago CNBC cued to the its gas-mask clad coverage from a violent Taksim Square, where a crowd of 50,000 was just getting the tear gas treatment from the local police. And sure enough, going back to the question we posed first thing this morning whether with “a big demonstration is due in a few hours: will Taksim Square June 2013 be the “Waddel and Reed/May 2010″ Syntagma Square flash crash equivalent?”, we got the answer courtesy of the USDJPY which just tumbled over 80 pips in the span of minutes and dragged down not only the S&P but the Nikkei with it. We hope the NSA has a read on just where Waddell and Reed is located exactly this moment or else things may get very Syntagmaish Squarish circa May 2010 in a hurry…
