Computerworld – The most ubiquitous local area networking technology used by big business may be packing its bags for a road trip.

As in-vehicle electronics become more sophisticated to support autonomous driving, cameras, and infotainment systems, Ethernet
has become a top contender for connecting them.

For example, the BMW X5 automobile, released last year, used single-pair twisted wire, 100Mbps Ethernet to connect its driver-assistance
cameras.

Paris-based Parrot, which supplies mobile accessories to automakers BMW, Hyundai and others, has developed in-car Ethernet.
Its first Ethernet-connected systems could hit the market as soon as 2015, says Eric Riyahi, executive vice president of global
operations.

Parrot’s new Ethernet-based Audio Video Bridging (AVB) technology uses Broadcom’s BroadR-Reach automotive Ethernet controller
chips.

The AVB technology’s network management capabilities allows automakers to control the timing of data streams between specific
network nodes in a vehicle and controls the bandwidth in order to manage competing data traffic.

Ethernet’s bandwidth could provide drivers with turn-by-turn navigation while a front-seat passenger streams music from the
Internet, and each back-seat passenger watches streaming videos on separate displays.

“In-car Ethernet is seen as a very promising way to provide the needed bandwidth for coming new applications within the fields
of connectivity, infotainment and safety,” said Hans Alminger, senior manager for Diagnostics & ECU Platform at Volvo, in
a statement.

Automotive Ethernet

Ethernet was initially used by automakers only for on-board diagnostics. But as automotive electronics advanced, the technology
has found a place in advanced driver assistance systems and infotainment platforms.

Many manufacturers also use Ethernet to connect rear vision cameras to a car’s infotainment or safety system, said Patrick
Popp General Manager at TE Connectivity, a maker of car antennas and other automobile communications parts.

Currently, however, there are as many as nine proprietary auto networking specifications, including LIN, CAN/CAN-FD and FlexRay.
FlexRay, for example, has a 10Mbps transmission rate. Ethernet could increase that 10 times.

The effort to create a single vehicle Ethernet standard is being lead by Open Alliance and the IEEE 802.3 working group. The
groups are hoping to establish the Ethernet specification “100Mbps BroadR-Reach” as the de facto standard physical layer.

The first automotive Ethernet standard draft is expected this year.

The Open Alliance claims more than 200 members, including General Motors, Ford, Daimler, Honda, Hyundai, BMW, Toyota, Volkswagen.
Jaguar Land Rover, Renault, Volvo, Bosch, Freescale and Harman.

Broadcom, which makes electronic control unit chips for automobiles, is a member of the Open Alliance and is working on the
effort to standardize automotive Ethernet.

Currently, the groups are working on interoperability requirements for devices inside of a vehicle.

Once the requirements are established, Ethernet will play a big part in the integration of different data streaming sensors,
including two and three dimensional and infrared cameras, and radar sensors for sophisticated driver assistant systems.

TSA-approved warrantless searches of vehicles parked outside airports are being expanded, with a photograph taken at Birmingham-Shuttlesworth International Airport informing Thanksgiving travelers that all vehicles belonging to AmeriPark customers “will be searched by uniformed security.”

The policy, which first came to light earlier this summer after complaints from people who found notes inside their car which read, “your vehicle has been inspected under TSA regulations,” continues to cause confusion and stoke concern amongst privacy advocates.

When the story first broke, the TSA was keen to deflect responsibility by explaining that although, “the plan is approved by the TSA, it is up to each airport authority and its state and local law enforcement partners to follow the plan that has been implemented.”

The sign above, originally posted by Young Americans For Liberty, suggests that airport uniformed security guards are responsible for carrying out the searches at Birmingham International, not valet parking staff. The image was taken on November 27, the day after Thanksgiving and one of the busiest travel days of the year.

At some airports the searches are also being conducted with customers receiving no notification whatsoever.

“I was inside paying my bill. I looked through the window and saw this gentleman looking through my trunk,” said Michelle Zevola, who used the Curbside Valet Service at Charlotte Douglas Airport. “He was moving things around, shining a flashlight, going through the compartments. I am so fine being searched at the airport. It’s about safety. But I am not fine with my personal property being searched without permission or notification,” added Zevola.

“There is no posted signage at the valet stand or around the airport that indicates cars left with curbside service will be searched. There is also no warning on the back of the valet ticket,” reported NBC Charlotte. Deputy Aviation Director Jack Christine admitted that the searches had been taking place for a year and half without any signage or notification.

Under the guidelines, the person performing the search, whether that be a valet parking employee or a “unformed security” guard, is instructed to check the trunk, the engine as well as scan inside the car.

The policy represents a clear violation of the 4th Amendment to the Constitution, which protects Americans against “unreasonable searches and seizures,” although TSA officials have justified the measures as necessary “to keep you and your family safe at the airport.”

Critics have lambasted the TSA and airports who enforce the policy for entrusting searches of vehicles to valet parking attendants, who wouldn’t normally be considered to be highly trained in bomb detection skills.

“Take note of that, America. Your safety can only be guaranteed by a search of valet-parked vehicles, but not by a trained agent,” wrote TechDirt’s Tim Cushing. “Instead, your valet will do a brief search of your vehicle to ensure there’s nothing inside the cabin, trunk or under the hood that looks like a bomb. (Like, for instance, a bundle of wires and some other stuff with a post-it attached saying, “NOT A BOMB.”)”

Another traveler who complained that her car had been searched with zero notice was Laurie Iacuzza, who said she was “furious” that airport personnel rifled through her vehicle without permission.

Revenue generation takes precedence over stopping actual crimes

Illustrating once again how police are now little more than revenue generators for a state which vampirically feeds on the public, cops in Knoxville, Tennessee are swapping patrol cars for big rigs in a bid to catch texters.

The swap is “part of a sting to catch people texting and driving,” and gives the Highway Patrol police an advantage in spotting “violators” because the semi-trucks sit much higher.

According to the report, dozens of drivers were ticketed during day one of the sweep in Knoxville.

The notion of being tailed by a cop in a massive truck is obviously also a powerful intimidation tactic.

A MyFox DC anchor questioned the policy, remarking, “That doesn’t seem like that’s right, it seems that would cost a lot more….you can’t get anything higher than that, like an SUV wouldn’t work, you’ve got to get a big rig?” However, his co-anchor thought the idea was “clever”.

This is yet another example of how the state is directing police to act as revenue generators rather than having them stop actual crimes.

Police response times are getting slower every year, but instead of concentrating on “protect and serve,” cops are increasingly being deployed by state and local governments simply to shake down the public for money.

America’s freeways are no longer a shining example of a ‘free’ country, and instead have been turned into revenue generating control grids watched over by big brother surveillance cameras, license plate scanners and aggressive roid-rage cops who hunt down drivers for minor infractions.

The cost of traffic tickets is also soaring as governments vampirically suck off the public in a desperate bid to replenish their bankrupt coffers. Speeding tickets raise some $ 6 billion dollars in the U.S. every single year.

As Michael Snyder comments, “Back in the old days, the highways of America were great examples to the rest of the world of the tremendous liberties and freedoms that we enjoyed. Americans loved to hop into their vehicles and take a drive. But now government is sucking all of the fun out of driving. The control freak bureaucrats that dominate our political system have figured out that giant piles of money can be raised by turning our roads into revenue raising tools.”

Under the proposals new cars would be fitted with cameras that could read road speed limit signs and automatically apply the brakes when this is exceeded.

Patrick McLoughlin, the Transport Secretary, is said to be opposed to the plans, which could also mean existing cars are sent to garages to be fitted with the speed limiters, preventing them from going over 70mph.

The new measures have been announced by the European Commission’s Mobility and Transport Department as a measure to reduce the 30,000 people who die on the roads in Europe every year.

GM Sales Chief: “Sales Of Smaller Cars Have Been Robust For Some Time.” Agence France-Presse quoted GM sales chief Kurt McNeil as saying, “Sales of smaller cars have been robust for some time,” and adding that “the strength of the crossover market signals that America’s families are more confident about their financial health.” [Agence France-Presse, 4/2/13]

FoxBusiness.com: “Demand For Fuel-Efficient Vehicles Ramped Up” In March. A FoxBusiness.com article quoted Ken Czubay, Ford vice president of U.S. marketing, sales and service as saying, “Customers are buying our all-new Fusion and Escape in record numbers, and we are working harder than ever to keep pace with demand for these fuel-efficient vehicles.” When explaining the jump in March auto sales, the article said that “demand for fuel-efficient vehicles ramped up in the U.S. and pickup trucks rebounded.” [FoxBusiness.com, 4/2/13]

Hybrid Sales Were Up 32 Percent In January And February Compared With The Same Period Last Year. The Los Angeles Times reported that “Hybrid sales were up 32% in the first two months of this year compared with the same period last year, according to research firm Autodata Corp.” The Times cited “a combination of trends, including upward-creeping gas prices, a growing track record for reliability and the wider selection of hybrid offerings” as driving the change. LA Times: Truck Sales Were Strong “As The Truck-Heavy Home Construction Industry Continues To Recover In The U.S.” The Los Angeles Times reported: “Truck sales for Ford and the other Detroit automakers were particularly good as the truck-heavy home construction industry continues to recover in the U.S.” [Los Angeles Times, 4/2/13]

Ford Economist In January 2013: “Recovery In The Housing Market Should Drive Pickup Sales In 2013.” In January, Reuters reported that analysts predicted truck sales would increase as the housing market rallied:

The beginnings of a recovery in the housing market should drive pickup sales in 2013, said Ford economist Ellen Hughes-Cromwick, citing a Census Bureau figures showing a sharp increase in people setting up new households.

“This is a fundamental physical foundation for housing recovery,” she said. “When you look at the housing recovery, it can put a twinkle in your eye every bit as much as 2013 sales forecasts do.” [Reuters, 1/14/13]

The judge suspended a nine month jail sentence for a year.

Mr Graham, who had no recollection of the events, had previously stated that he did not agree with people driving large 4x4s, otherwise known as Chelsea tractors, in cities.

However, the judge accepted that this was not the motivation for the vandalism. Only ten of the vehicles he scratched were 4x4s. Others included a red Audi A1, a grey Volvo, a Mercedes and a promotional Mitsubishi 4×4 for the Metro Radio station.

Words he carved into the paintwork included “arbitrary”, “wrong”, “very silly” and “twat”.

The court heard that Mr Graham had enjoyed a distinguished academic career. He was “highly-respected” in his field and had received glowing references.

On the night in question, he had taken antibiotics for an infection contracted after having a tooth removed and was taking medication for an ongoing depressive illness.

He told police that he had also drunk three quarters of a bottle of gin, and having been unable to sleep, must have gone out.

Officers were called after a witness heard scratching on the pavement in the early hours of August 31 and looked outside to see a figure crouching on the ground.

Julian Smith, mitigating, said: “These are extraordinary circumstances which have caused him to feel profound embarrassment and shame.

“Part of him still struggles to comprehend how it is someone with his professional circumstances should find himself before the court answering for these offences.”

He said Mr Graham could remember going to bed, and apart from some “dreamlike memories” the next thing he recalled was being arrested not far from his home in Jesmond, a leafy suburb of Newcastle.

With regard to how his client was dressed, Mr Smith said: “That is not a man who has set out to commit damage to cars, it is a man who is clearly not properly within himself.”

He said the lecturer had shown no signs of aggression when arrested but simply had a bad reaction to the medication and alcohol.

A report by forensic psychiatrist Don Grubin, for the defence, found that Mr Graham had been detached from reality.

The professor admitted four counts of criminal damage and asked for another 23 cases to be taken into consideration.

The judge said: “He is obviously a highly intelligent man. He is married no doubt to a highly intelligent woman. If he needs, he knows where to obtain help.”

He expressed hope that Mr Graham would not lose his job.

A Newcastle University spokesman said: “We will be considering the matter through normal university procedures.”
