(Newser) – Tom Hanks is looking slimmer these days, and when David Letterman asked him about his weight last night on the Late Show, Hanks offered a surprising revelation: He has type 2 diabetes, the Huffington Post reports. He’s been struggling with high blood sugar since age 36, Hanks said, and his doctor recently told him, “You’ve graduated. You’ve got type 2 diabetes, young man.” Hanks didn’t seem all that bothered by the news: “My doctor said, ‘Look, if you can weigh as much as you weighed in high school, you will essentially be completely healthy and will not have type 2 diabetes,’” he said. “And I said to her, ‘Well, I’m gonna have type 2 diabetes.’”

Avanir Pharma to co-promote Merck"s diabetes drugs; shares rise

Mon Aug 12, 2013 5:42pm EDT

(Reuters) – Avanir Pharmaceuticals Inc said it signed a three-year agreement with Merck & Co Inc to co-promote Merck’s multibillion-dollar drugs to treat Type 2 diabetes.

Avanir shares rose 11 percent in extended trading after closing at $ 4.50 on the Nasdaq.

The company said its salesforce will promote Januvia, Janumet and Janumet XR in long-term care facilities such as nursing homes and skilled nursing facilities in the United States from October.

Avanir said in a regulatory filing that it could get up to $ 60 million from Merck over the three years, from a fixed monthly fee and performance fee.

“I think it’s impressive to sign a deal with Merck and obviously, it’s not going to cost them very much and it’s going to help them get to profitability,” Summer Street Research analyst Carol Werther told Reuters.

“The agreement is just for long-term care centers, which is where a lot of their sales force is right now and where they’ve been most successful.”

Merck recorded $ 4.09 billion in sales from Januvia and $ 1.66 billion from Janumet in 2012, according to a regulatory filing dated February 28.

Avoid at All Costs

You know that not all foods are created equal. If you\’re diabetic, there are some foods that you should avoid at all cost, as they are unhealthy and make blood sugar management difficult. Read on to find out what foods you should avoid.

AVOID: Restaurant French Fries: A cringe-worthy sorry excuse for potatoes. French fries have plenty of the stuff you want to avoid, like saturated fat, sodium, and calories. Psst- trans-fat free doesn\’t mean it\’s healthier. Think twice before you order these cholesterol bombs.

Number Two: Hamburgers/ Cheeseburgers: Stuffed with bad fats and calories, these meaty morsels make it even harder to keep blood sugar in a healthy range. So avoid. If you really are craving a burger, make it at home if you can, with lots of vegetables and no cheese.

Number Three: Store-bought Cookies: Buying, opposed to making, cookies can be a very unhealthy choice. Trans fat, high fructose corn syrup, and hydrogenated corn oils aren\’t something you\’d find in Grandma\’s cookies.

4. Cakes and pies: All right, all right, we all know that nothing good can come from purposely sugary sweet cake and pie. Trans fats and saturated fats are just a few of the nutrition offenders in cake mixes. Pound cake? Avoid at all costs.

AVOID: Frozen \”Convenient\” Meals: All right, let\’s face it: Just because something is convenient doesn\’t mean it\’s healthy. Convenient foods like TV dinners and potpies are chock-full of fats and sodium. Make sure, if you do eat a frozen meal, that it\’s low in fat and calories.

Number Six: Soda: While some sodas actually contain some nutrition, it sunk in the pools of high fructose corn syrup. If you really need soda, make it diet. Artificial sweeteners are at least a little better than sugar.

So, as a diabetic, there are lots of foods to ignore that can add to your waistlines and make management of diabetes harder. There are more victuals that you shouldn\’t eat though, so be on the lookout for foods that aren\’t as healthy as they seem.
