Pastors Buy Out Theaters for Premiere of "Son of God"

Megachurch pastor Rick Warren and other Christian leaders are renting out theaters in across the country to premiere the new religious movie “Son of God” on Feb. 27, a day before it officially opens, Religious News Service reports.

The movie, whose producers include Mark Burnett and Roma Downey, is an adapted largely from “The Bible” miniseries which airs on the History Channel. It stars Diogo Morgado as Jesus and Downey as his mother Mary.

Distributors of the film say it “brings the story of Jesus’ life to audiences through compelling cinematic storytelling that is both powerful and inspirational … with the scope and scale of an action epic.”

Religious News Service says many religious leaders are “citing the movie as a natural opportunity to evangelize.”

Warren, author of the best-selling book “The Purpose Driven Life” and founder-minister of Saddleback Church, America’s fourth largest megachurch with 22,000 members, wrote a curriculum tied to the movie and published by LifeWay Christian Resources.

In an interview with Newsmax last month, Burnett, producer of reality shows as “Shark Tank” and “Survivor,” said “Son of God” will have a wide impact for Christian evangelism as modern technology brings the film about the life of Jesus to remote areas of the world.

“We believe in the decades to come, people in remote places will find Jesus through watching this movie on their iPhones,” Burnett said.

The film is rated PG-13 for intense and bloody depiction of the Crucifixion and for some sequences of violence.

One character who will be cut from the movie is an actor who played Satan in the miniseries, after a controversy arose because of his physical resemblance to President Barack Obama.

Premiere spikes liberal radio show

The liberal talker alluded in October that ‘my ability to talk to you is going away.’

Premiere Networks on Wednesday announced it is dropping liberal talker Randi Rhodes’ radio show at the end of the year, the syndicator confirmed to POLITICO.

Rhodes, whose nationally syndicated show airs Monday through Friday from 3-6 p.m., had suggested to her listeners since October that her days on radio were “totally numbered.” Premiere said today it will no longer carry her show after the year ends.

“Premiere Networks will no longer produce and distribute The Randi Rhodes Show after Tuesday, December 31, 2013,” Premiere’s public relations director Rachel Nelson told POLITICO in an email.

Premiere began distributing Rhodes’ show in 2009. Previously, her show had been on Air America Radio, the failed progressive radio network, and she’d made headlines during her tenure there in 2008 for calling Hillary Clinton and Geraldine Ferraro “whores.”

While Wednesday’s confirmation from Premiere is the first official news about the end of Rhodes’ contract, the liberal talker had alluded to listeners in October that “my ability to talk to you is going away.”

“The only way you’ll be able to find me in a little while is if you have my personal phone number,” she said on her Oct. 18 show.

Rhodes’ regular guest host Nicole Sandler will fill in for Rhodes from Dec. 16-31, Sandler told POLITICO, making Rhodes’ likely last day on air this year Dec. 13.

The swimming pool. It’s the first thing we see in the episode that kicks off the final chapter of “Breaking Bad.” Only the pool — that frequently showcased pseudo-oasis in the White family backyard whose tranquility has previously been broken by mangled pink teddy bears and Skyler White plunging literally and metaphorically off her own deep end — doesn’t look like a pool. It’s empty, nothing now but hot, scuffed pavement that serves as a makeshift skate park for Albuquerque’s modern-day equivalent of the Z-boys.

The implication of this episode-opening flash-forward — a flash-forward that appears to take place shortly after Walter White walked out of a Denny’s in last year’s “Live Free or Die” — is that the life Walt got into the crystal-blue-persuasion business to maintain is now completely destroyed. Or rather, it will be by the time Walt reaches his 52nd birthday. With this second glimpse of the future, Vince Gilligan and the “Breaking Bad” writers have again given us a sense of where this antiheroic saga is headed as it hurtles toward its simultaneously anticipated and dreaded ending. We know it’s going somewhere bleak and scary, where it’s not just the pool that’s barren — it’s the entire, once modestly cozy White household. That place isn’t just empty, it looks like a one-time crime scene, aggressively ransacked within, fenced-off outside and undoubtedly destroying the property values for Carol — the petrified next-door neighbor who drops her groceries in shock at the sight of Walt — and anyone else unfortunate enough to live on Negra Arroyo Lane. There is some good news for house hunters interested in eventually purchasing that charming three-bedroom rambler, though: the yellow, spray-painted HEISENBERG on the paneled wall in the living room comes with the house.
