Siloxane is another name for silicone adhesive.

Siloxane sealants are found in many forms. One such form is a mixture of two different compounds that when mixed together undergo a chemical reaction and become adhesive in nature. However, the adhesion is short lived and has to be used quickly or else the two surfaces may not join effectively.

There are also single compound based siloxane sealants. A good example of the same is the RTV sealant. Room Temperature Vulcanizing sealants are best known for their quick setting time because they instantly interact with moisture present in air to start curing down and settling on the surface. This makes it harder to apply RTV sealants to two disjoint surfaces.

Then there are technologically more advanced forms of siloxane sealants in the market. One such type is the pressure sensitive adhesive that provides a permanent tackiness and tends to glue better under extra pressure. The advantage of using such sealants is that the glue does not stick until pressure is exerted on it hence one cannot accidently apply this onto a surface. Another variant is the UV based sealant called cured siloxane that uses UV rays to harden. Similarly there are thermoset sealants that require heat exposure to cure.

A siloxane sealant can be utilized for various applications ranging from automobile industry to crafts. For example, an engine block needs to be water tight, for which gaskets are used but to glue together the engine head and gasket siloxane sealants are used. In model making as a hobby, flexibility is a must and that is what a siloxane sealant offers.

For most domestic purposes a siloxane sealant comes in the form of a gun with a pressure rod at the back. Using this device is difficult and its rather easy to botch up a simple job. First thing to do is gently apply more pressure on the gun by pulling the pressure rod backwards. Once, it is at its farthest position, place the nozzle in position and squeeze at the gun gently until siloxane oozes out of it.

When replacing old siloxane sealant its vital to first remove all of the old deposit. This is simple with a crafting or utility knife. Once the siloxane is removed without damaging the surrounding area, it is time to start applying the sealant again. A good way to remove old deposits is to cut long pieces into small sections and pry them out.

It is vital to ensure that there is no debris from the old sealant left in place. This can hamper the adhesion between the fresh layer of siloxane sealant and contact surface. Hence, scrap away at the remaining residue and wipe the surface clean using a cloth. After using a silicone sealer to cover the region, use a wetted finger to smother the edges and remove excessive siloxane.
