According to Dick Cheney “Canada is Too Dangerous”. He Fears Arrest but has not Cancelled his Trip to Toronto

cheney

“Dick Cheney cancels Toronto trip, says Canada is too dangerous”.

Too dangerous for what and for whom?

Lest you be confused, that was back in April of 2012, when he decided to cancel his trip to Toronto.

Cheney was indicted for war crimes by the Kuala Lumpur War Crimes Tribunal in a historic judgment in May 2012:

Chief Prosecutor of the Kuala Lumpur War Crimes Commission v. George Walker Bush et al

According to a March 2012 report:

Former U.S. vice-president Dick Cheney has cancelled an April [2012] appearance in Toronto citing concerns Canada is too dangerous.

“He felt that in Canada the risk of violent protest was simply too high,” said Ryan Ruppert, president of promotions company Spectre Live Corp., which had booked Mr. Cheney for an April 24 appearance at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre.

In September [2011], Mr. Cheney was speaking at a private club in Vancouver when protesters massed outside the front door harassing ticket holders and in one instance, choking a security guard.

 The former vice-president was reportedly held inside the building for more than seven hours as Vancouver Police in riot gear dispersed the demonstrators.

 Richard Cheney, former Vice President of the United States of America is scheduled to speak in Toronto Ontario on 31 October 2013 at the Toronto Global Forum, hosted by the International Economic Forum of the Americas at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre.

Latest news suggests that Cheney’s visit to Toronto is on. But so is the citizens’ movement to arrest him.

The malign Dick Cheney is in Toronto this week, having apparently conquered his fear of Canada and the anti-torture protests that made him cancel an April speech last year. I don’t know how another war criminal has made it across our border — Kissinger visits often — but there Cheney will be on Halloween at noon, speaking to the Toronto Forum of the International Economic Forum of the Americas in the glassy erotic climes of the Metro Toronto Convention Centre.

What ho! Blood will run from the taps. A sudden chill will envelop the city.

There had been worries. “God forbid there was ever a [health] emergency,” his speech booker said of the April cancellation, given that the last time Cheney was in Canada, he had had to hide inside for simply hours from Vancouver anti-torture demonstrators (Toronto Star, October 31, 2013)

Canada is still a dangerous place for former vice president Dick Cheney. Lawyers have warned in a letter to Toronto Chief of Police that Once Richard (Dick) Cheney enters Canada:

• All of the torture alleged against and admitted by Dick Cheney, is deemed to have taken place in Canada, pursuant to (s. 7(3.7) of the Criminal Code of Canada (CC);
• criminal proceedings can be commenced against him in Toronto Ontario BC (CC, s. 7(5);
• Canada must ensure that Dick Cheney is either investigated and prosecuted for the indictable offence of torture in Canada or extradited to another country willing and able to do so (Convention against Torture, Art. 7);
• Toronto Police Service (TPS) officers are duty bound to arrest and detain Dick Cheney for investigation on suspicion of torture as part of Canada’s mandatory legal obligation to prevent and punish torture globally;
• TPS officers are duty bound to arrest Dick Cheney to ensure the proper conduct of his investigation and prosecution for torture in Canada or his extradition to a country willing and able to prosecute;
• TPS officers are duty bound to arrest Dick Cheney to prevent him from escaping to the United States or some other jurisdiction where he will have ‘safe haven’ from prosecution for torture;
• the arrest of Dick Cheney can be carried out without warrant in advance of the commencement of criminal proceedings in Canada.

In their letter, Lawyers against the War duly reminded Toronto Chief of Police William (Bill) Blair and Attorney General of Ontario John Gerretsen, that “TPS officers also have a mandatory duty to prevent offences against the administration of justice such as enabling a torture suspect (in this case a person who has admitted to authorizing and failing to prevent torture) to escape prosecution.”

We remind you that neither Dick Cheney’s status as former vice president of the United States nor his status as a guest of the Toronto Global Forum or the International Economic Forum of the Americas constitutes a defense to torture or confers on him any temporary immunity from Canadian law. As you are aware, TPS officers are compelled by law to ensure that the criminal law is administered in accordance with s. 15(1) guarantee that, “[e]very individual is equal before and under the law and has the right to the equal protection and equal benefit of the law without discrimination…”

Michel Chossudovsky is Member of the Kuala Lumpur War Crimes Commission (KLWCC) which initiated the prosecution directed against Bush et al in May 2012

Washington State Will Keep Pushing For Industrial Hemp

Washington StateTenth Amendment Center

Industrial hemp has gained a lot of ground this year, with legislation introduced and moving in several states, and laws being signed in Colorado and Vermont already. In fact, just last week farmers in Colorado harvested the first U.S. hemp crop in decades – and they did it in complete disregard for federal law. Hemp is such a versatile plant – with uses ranging from food to textiles – and is so heavily imported by the U.S., that it simply makes no sense not to grow it.

HB 1888 would allow for the production of industrial hemp in Washington state. The bill has already made it through two public hearings, and is currently being held in the House Appropriations Committee, where it ran into a last minute deadline this spring. The bill’s sponsor, Representative Matt Shea, has spoken repeatedly about the many uses of hemp, and told me in April that “this is a phenomenal bill, expanding freedom, allowing jobs to be created – a new market here in Washington state – the potential state economic impact is in the tens of millions if not hundreds of millions.”

This bill identifies industrial hemp as an agricultural product which can be grown, produced, possessed, and commercially traded in the state. Pursuant, of course, to the provisions of the law. The passage of such would not only be a huge boon to Washington state, but act as another domino in the chain of states who are taking back power over what they can grow and produce within their own borders.

What you can do:

1) The next legislative session begins on January 13th, and it will be important that we contact the House Appropriations Committee to make sure they are planning on pushing this bill forward. The hearing in April went well, but no vote was taken. Please ask the committee members to send this bill to the floor for a full vote.

2) Contact your legislators. Ask them for a positive vote when this bill comes to the floor. As I’ve stated before, it is not too early to begin dropping emails, snail mail, or even leaving phone messages for our reps. We want the important issues to be front and center from the first hour of the session. You can find their information here.

3) Share, share, share! Post information on Facebook, tell your friends and family about the benefits of industrial hemp in our state – get the word out. And again, help equip your friends with bill and legislator info.

Washington State Will Keep Pushing For Industrial Hemp

Citigroup Written Legislation Moves Through the House of Representatives

libertyblitzkrieg.com
October 31, 2013

Five years after the Wall Street coup of 2008, it appears the U.S. House of Representatives is as bought and paid for as ever. We heard about the Citigroup crafted legislation currently being pushed through Congress back in May when Mother Jones reported on it. Fortunately, they included the following image in their article:

Screen Shot 2013-10-29 at 12.54.50 PM

Unsurprisingly, the main backer of the bill is notorious Wall Street lackey Jim Himes (D-Conn.), a former Goldman Sachs employee who has discovered lobbyist payoffs can be just as lucrative as a career in financial services. The last time Mr. Himes made an appearance on these pages was in March 2013 in my piece: Congress Moves to DEREGULATE Wall Street.

More from the New York Times:

The House is scheduled to vote on two bills this week that would undercut new financial regulations and hand Wall Street a victory. The legislation has garnered broad bipartisan support in the House, even after lawmakers learned that Citigroup lobbyists helped write one of the bills, which would exempt a wide array of derivatives trading from new regulation.

Remember what George Carlin observed:

“Bipartisan usually means some larger-than-usual deception is being carried out.”

The bills are part of a broader campaign in the House, among Republicans and business-friendly Democrats, to roll back elements of the 2010 Dodd-Frank Act, the most comprehensive regulatory overhaul since the Depression. Of 10 recent bills that alter Dodd-Frank or other financial regulation, six have passed the House this year. This week, if the House approves Citigroup’s legislation and another bill that would delay heightened standards for firms that offer investment advice to retirees, the tally would rise to eight.

But simply voting on the bills generates benefits for both House lawmakers and Wall Street lobbyists, critics say. For lawmakers, it comes in the form of hundreds of thousands of dollars in campaign contributions. The banks, meanwhile, welcome the bills as a warning to regulatory agencies that they should tread carefully when drawing up new rules.

“The House is the odd man out in terms of doing Wall Street’s bidding,” said Marcus Stanley, policy director of Americans for Financial Reform, a nonprofit group critical of the financial industry. “They’re letting Wall Street write the law to its own benefit in ways that harm the public.”

Wall Street’s support from the House extends beyond favorable votes. When bank executives are called to testify before Congress, industry lobbyists distribute proposed questions to lawmakers and their staff, seeking to exert some control over the debate, according to emails written by staff members on the House Financial Services Committee that were reviewed by The Times.

The legislation, Mr. Himes said in an interview, poses no financial risk to the country. And while he is the second-largest recipient among House Democrats of financial sector donations, that is not what is compelling his vote, he said.

Of course not. What are you a conspiracy theorist?

“It hardly determines, thank goodness, how legislators think about these issues,” said Mr. Himes, a former Goldman Sachs executive.

“After inflicting so much pain and suffering on the American people, now is not the time to let the largest banks back into the casino,” Representative Maxine Waters, the ranking Democrat on the House Financial Services Committee, said in a statement.

Sorry ma’m you’re just a little late.

Some House bills have the explicit purpose of delaying new regulation. One bill scheduled for a vote this week could temporarily restrain the Labor Department from imposing a new rule requiring some financial advisers to take on a fiduciary duty to clients when providing retirement investment advice. Such a duty would demand that the advisers act in the best interest of the client.

The bill that Citigroup helped draft takes aim at one of the more contentious provisions in Dodd Frank, a requirement that banks “push out” some derivatives trading into separate units that are not backed by the government’s insurance fund. The goal was to isolate this risky trading and to prevent government bailouts.

How contentious! This is America after all.

Books Dictated From Beyond The Grave

books

Via Mental Floss, literary works that came to us from the other side:

  • The Sorry Tale (Pearl Lenore Curran and Patience Worth). Starting in the early 1910s, Pearl Lenore Curran and her friend Emily Grant Hutchings worked the Ouija board together twice a week. On July 8, 1913, Patience Worth made her presence known. According to the frantic spelling across the Ouija board, Patience was born in either 1649 or 1694 “across the sea” and was killed in an Indian raid. When really inspired, the Patience-Pearl duo could spell out about 1500 words an hour, which is how she came to be the author of books including The Sorry Tale and Hope Trueblood.

  • God Bless U, Daughter (Mildred Swanson and Mark Twain). Unwilling to let his deceased status slow him down, Samuel Clemens allegedly contacted Mildred Swanson of Independence, Missouri. In the late 1960s, Swanson wrote a book called God Bless U, Daughter, a diary of her planchette conversations with Clemens.

  • The Seth Materials (Jane Roberts and “Seth”). In 1963, a “personality energy essence” calling itself “Seth” contacted Jane Roberts via the Ouija board, which she was using for research on a book about ESP. Seth preferred to divulged details about reincarnation, free will, telepathy, physical matter, anti-matter, and the subconscious. Together, Roberts and Seth developed enough material for 10 books from more than 1800 sessions.

  • A View From the Other Side (Mary Maracek and Jane Roberts). Jane Roberts died in 1984 at the age of 55. Naturally, she took it upon herself to channel her writings through someone else just as Seth had done through her. The result is Jane Roberts’ A View from the Other Side, about Jane’s own experiences since her death.

Lyrics:
He was working on his laptop late one night
when his eyes beheld a ghoulish site
He could not log in despite several tries
then suddenly to no one’s surprise

(he did the Mash)
He did the Healthcare Mash
(the Healthcare Mash)
it was a keyboard smash
(he did the Mash)
the website was trash
(he did the Mash)
He did the Healthcare mash

Who could design such a site so flawed and so sloppy?
The code is so ancient, perhaps it was Hammurabi
He’d try to apply but the site would suspend
I’ve seen a eunuch with a more functional front end

(he did the Mash)
He did the Healthcare Mash
(the Healthcare Mash)
it was a keyboard smash
(he did the Mash)
He tried to clear his cache
(he did the Mash)
He did the Healthcare mash

Hundreds of millions of dollars were spent
for a website that has trouble loading
How could the government’s web designers
create a site with such awful coding?

(they did the Mash)
Ahh, they did the Healthcare Mash
(the Healthcare Mash)
it was a keyboard smash
(they did the Mash)
they spent all of our cash
(they did the Mash)
They did the Healthcare Mash

All three major races in New Jersey, New York, and Virginia are set to be blowouts. It’s something we haven’t seen in 40 years

In case you couldn’t tell, I love elections. But unlike many folks, my favorite year in the four-year cycle of United States elections is not the presidential one. I enjoy getting to know the candidates in state and local contests in a way that only midterm and off-year elections allow. The problem is that there isn’t a “major” competitive race in 2013. This year, we may have a new election night record for earliest announcement of the winners in an off-year following a presidential election.

What do I mean by all of this?

The year after the presidential election features three marquee races: New Jersey governor, New York City mayor, and Virginia governor. New Jersey usually includes outsized personalities in two major media markets (Philadelphia and New York). New York City mayor is basically the same thing, but in the country’s largest city. Virginia is a swing state that is often predictive of the next year’s midterm elections and is next to the nation’s capital.

None of that has necessarily changed this year. New Jersey’s Chris Christie continues to amaze with his uncommonly wide coalition for a Republican. Bill de Blasio’s going to return Democrats to Gracie Mansion in New York City for the first time in 20 years. And you’ll rarely see two major state-wide candidates as disliked as Democrat Terry McAuliffe and Republican Ken Cuccinelli in Virginia.

The difficulty for the electorally excited is that all the probable winners are going to do so rather easily. Christie is up by nearly 30pt, De Blasio is ahead by over 40pt, and McAuliffe is leading by about 10pt. Drama is sorely lacking in the final week before election day.

It’s not unusual for one or even two of these races to be yawners. There were two fantastic 1989 races in New York and Virginia where African Americans were elected in tight races to their respective positions for the first time, while New Jersey was a blowout victory for Jim Florio. In 1973, there were two 35pt lifeless races in New York and New Jersey, but was saved by a 1pt affair in the Old Dominion.

The difference this year is that all three big races should be called soon after the polls close. I went back over the past 40 years of election results to get an idea of how rare the snoozefest of 2013 is for the after-presidential-off-year election troika. It may end up being historic.

The table here is sorted by the closest contest, and I put in the current Real Clear Politics averages for the 2013 races.

What you see is that only 1985 had a wider margin at 10.41pt for the closest contest than 2013 currently. It’s entirely conceivable that 2013 could beat 1985, especially since the latest Washington Post poll has McAuliffe up by 12pt in Virginia. Therefore, 2013 could actually end up being the most boring general election year for the New Jersey, New York City, Virginia triumvirate since 1973.

A closer look reveals that 1985 and 2013 are really in a completely different world than the larger dataset. More than half the years since 1973 had at least one race where the margin was less than 3pt. Eight out of 11 had at least one race where the margin was mid-single digits or lower. Only 1977, 1985, and 2013 were near or above double digits in their closest race.

What separates 1985 and 2013 from 1977 is the fact that two of the races were or are going to be landslides. Even though none of the 1977 races were nail biters, they were all modestly competitive. None had margins of greater than 14pt. 1985 had – and 2013 looks to ultimately have – two races in which the winning candidate won by more than 25pt.

If 2013 contained two non-blowouts, then there would at least be a decent chance that one might get close in the final week. Maybe there’d be a scandal, or maybe the electoral gods would find some new and interesting way to insert some doubt in the final outcome of one of the races.

As it is, there are no signs that anything is in doubt in 2013. Christie’s lead is expanding, De Blasio’s is steady, and McAuliffe has been widening the gap over the past two months. It’s almost certainly over, unless there is some tremendous surprise.

I guess the good news for the candidates is that they don’t have to worry about the final outcome. For the electoral junkies, it’s a sad, sad state of affairs.
