Scott Boice, Director of Counseling at Brandon Hall School in Atlanta, Georgia, was interviewed by Lon Woodbury on L.A. Talk Radio. They discussed how parents can aid students with learning difficulties. Brandon Hall School is doing groundbreaking work to aid students who need to have individual tutoring to prepare for college.

Background

Scott Boice has a B.A. from Brigham Young University in Hawaii as well as an M.A. from the University of Alabama. He is a Licensed Professional Counselor, and an affiliate of the American Counseling Association as well as the Licensed Professional Counselor Association of Georgia. As a counselor, Scott utilizes an assortment of methods to aid students attain their goals, varying from Positive Psychology to practicing mindfulness. In his leisure time, he gets a kick out of recreational activities like trail jogging, triathlons, and surfing.

Brandon Hall has a mission to offer parents an alternative choice when deciding on their children\’s education. This independent school is focused on giving each child a great education in a setting where they feel that they are part of an extended family. Brandon Hall has a unique educational philosophy: the school believes that parents, teachers, staff, and administrators should all work together to raise successful children.

Conquering Learning Challenges

During the meeting, Scott shared his enthusiasm for helping children to discover their own strengths and participate more fully in life. The radio show discussion focused on ways parents can support youngsters with learning difficulties.

Scott suggested that children need to go beyond their diagnostic label. A child with ADD, for example, needs to understand that he or she is more than the diagnosis and should not allow the label to be an excuse for underachievement or a drag on who they are.

He also suggested that parents change their expectations. High achieving parents with advanced degrees and measurable financial success worried about the impact poor grades had on their children\’s future. These parents were deeply concerned about how their children would be able to make a living when they grew up

In practical terms, parents and their children needed to concentrate on building a meaningful relationship. This would definitely aid children to function well within the boundaries of their learning challenges. Moms and Dads could get to know their children a lot better by creating more family events-perhaps, dining together or going on a vacation together. Scott recollected his own personal bonding experience with his son when their family volunteered during the Katrina catastrophe.
