NASHVILLE — The Tennessee Department of Economic and Community Development isn’t using additional taxpayer money to promote ABC’s “Nashville” on Facebook, but state employees do post material provided by ABC’s marketing department, an ECD official said.
In so doing, state employees, in addition to providing the usual government services, are now in the business of amusing people online.
“We promote these clips on our Facebook page for a number of reasons,” ECD spokeswoman Erin Holt said about the three promotional video clips posted thus far.

PROMOTIONAL: Tennessee state employees are promoting ABC’s “Nashville” on an official government Facebook page.
“Based on our experience, multimedia content, such as pictures and video, generate more ‘likes’ and traffic. These clips are accessible, interesting material that garners us additional reach for our message. To get people to engage and interact with our brand, we have to inform and entertain.”
As Tennessee Watchdog previously reported, the posts on the ECD’s official Facebook page are similar to things seen on “Entertainment Tonight” or ABC’s official Facebook page.
The official ECD page is generally a place for news about economic development conferences and new manufacturers coming to Tennessee.
One Facebook post asks the following:
“Juliette’s record label is questioning her new music, but will she step down and go back to bubblegum and glitter?”
Such posts attracted comments from fans of the show concerned with the fate of the soap opera characters, but those comments were not available when Tennessee Watchdog looked at the page Tuesday.
As previously reported, TDEC gave the show $ 12.5 million in taxpayer money in exchange for filming on location for its second season.
