Petraeus wanted to downgrade Medal of Honor hero

Former Army Gen. David Petraeus is once again in hot water. Reports state that Petraeus attempted to alter the war-record of Medal of Honor winner William Swenson.

A Pentagon investigation into the botched nomination of Army Capt. William Swenson revealed Petraeus surreptitiously tried to give Swenson the nation’s second-highest award, according to reports.

Swenson, 34, ultimately was awarded the Medal of Honor by President Obama last month for nearly singlehandedly fighting off 60 Taliban insurgents in 2009. He heroically assisted injured U.S. and Afghan troops following an assault in the Ganjgal Valley, and further proved his mettle by returning to the dangerous scene multiple times to recover his fallen brothers and sisters.

But his nomination process became mired in tricky bureaucracy — and somehow his original file sent to Obama as part of the award confirmation process was purged. The file Obama reviewed when making his decision was a duplicate.
