Andrea Mitchell On Bridge Controversy: "I Think The Democrats Are Probably Overdoing It"

DAVID GREGORY: And he could have this investigation around for a long while, and that’s what I was asking the assemblyman about.

ANDREA MITCHELL: I mean, I think what he has to focus on is the investigation. He probably should not have gone to Florida and fulfilled that commitment. Because in Florida, if he’s, first of all, behind a gated community with the wealthy, with Ken Langone, who’s also telling the New York Times at the same time he didn’t hire the right people. So, there’s criticism–

DAVID GREGORY: Wait. You’re cautioning about who he’s surrounding himself with, right?

ANDREA MITCHELL: And this is Langone, who wanted him to run in 2012. He was one of his strongest supporters. I think the Democrats are probably overdoing it by following him around and trailing him, looking like they’re piling on. But he’s got to deal with the investigation and make sure that if everything he said is correct, he’s home free. But he’s got to make sure, and there are a lot of emails out there.

Head Of Bridge Scandal Investigation: Hoboken Mayor"s Story "Attracted Our Attention"

New Jersey Assemblyman John Wisniewski (D) issued a statement Saturday responding to Hoboken, N.J. mayor Dawn Zimmer’s claims the administration of Gov. Chris Christie (R) withheld Hurricane Sandy relief money from her city because she did not fast-track a real estate project linked to one of his allies. Wisniewski, who is the chairman of the New Jersey General Assembly committee investigating last September’s lane closures on the George Washington Bridge, said Zimmer’s claims are “serious” and had the committee’s attention.

“The allegations discussed today by Mayor Zimmer are serious and yet again raise concern about abuse of government power, This certainly has attracted our attention. We need to obtain all relevant facts, confer with our special counsel and determine the committee’s best course of action,” said Wisniewski.

On Friday, the Assembly Democrats announced Wisniewski’s committee had served 20 individuals and organizations with subpoenas including Christie’s office, his re-election campaign, and many of his top aides. Some Democrats have alleged Christie’s allies ordered the closure of the lanes, which led to days of traffic in Fort Lee, N.J., to retaliate against a mayor who did not endorse him.

Dem Mayor: NJ Legislature Bridge Probes All About Getting On TV

Elizabeth Mayor Chris Bollwage on Thursday criticized members of the New Jersey legislature for forming separate committees in the assembly and the senate to investigate Gov. Chris Christie the George Washington Bridge scandal, accusing them of preening for the camera.

“That doesn’t make any sense,” the Democrat said on MSNBC, as recorded by Politicker NJ. “It’s a waste of taxpayer money, and it’s all about who can get on television first.”

The state senate announced it would form a select committee to investigate the lane closures after the assembly announced it would do so.

Assemblyman John Wisniewski (D) started investigating the bridge scandal last year on the chamber’s transportation committee, and Bollwage said on MSNBC that Wisniewski should continue to lead the legislature’s probe.
