Grammys: Daft Punk, Macklemore & Ryan Lewis Dominate; Lorde Surprises

This story first appeared on Billboard.com.

At a Grammy ceremony that will be forever known for a marriage ceremony with 33 couples presided over by Queen Latifah with Madonna singing, a dance music duo that does not speak dominated the awards with four wins.

Macklemore and Ryan Lewis, named best new artist, had the same number of wins. Lorde became the youngest artist to win in a general category besides best new artist when “Royals” was named song of the year.

Daft Punk won album and record of the year honors for the album Random Access Memories and the single “Get Lucky” featuring Pharrell Williams and Nile Rodgers. It is the first general category win for a dance-oriented album since the Saturday Night Fever soundtrack won album of the year for 1978.

Daft Punk also won pop duo or group performance, dance/electronica album and engineered album, non-classical. Pharrell Williams, who shared in the wins, was also named producer of the year, non-classical.

“The time that went into this was like a Steely Dan record,” mastering engineer Bob Ludwig said backstage. He became involved with project through guitarist Nile Rodgers, whose work together dates back the guitarist’s work with Chic and “Let’s Dance” with David Bowie. “The point of view was this record has to be perfect. There was no stone unturned, no dollar unspent.”

Daft Punk was the cornerstone of one of the “Grammy moment” performances, doing a seamless medley of “Get Lucky,” Chic’s “Freak Out” and Wonder’s “Another Star” with Williams, Rodgers and Stevie Wonder; it was one of the more successful groupings in the show’s history.

Winning record and album of the year is not that common, having not occurred since Robert Plant and Alison Krauss did it at the 2009 ceremony. That combination has only occurred five times in the last 20 years, the Dixie Chicks, Norah Jones and Santana among acts that have pulled off the perfecta.

By and large, the Recording Academy honored popular acts that defined 2013 across multiple platforms: “Get Lucky,” Lordes downtempo “Royals,” Macklemore and Ryan Lewis’ “Thrift Shop” and Imagine Dragons’ “Radioactive.” Bypassing Robin Thicke’s “Blurred Lines,” considering its legal issues with the Marvin Gaye camp, made logical sense for this peer-to-peer award.

Besides new artist, Macklemore and Ryan Lewis swept the rap categories they were nominated in: song and performance for “Thrift Shop,” the second biggest seller of 2013 with 6.15 million downloads, according to SoundScan, and album for the million-selling The Heist.

It was in the middle of Macklemore and Ryan Lewis’ performance of “Same Love,” a song that discusses attitudes toward homosexuality, when Queen Latifah presided over the marriage of 33 couples — straight and gay.

“I hope this is inspiration (for rappers) to tackle any subject you want, (even) a subject that may seem like a difficult subject,” Queen Latifah said backstage after the telecast. “We need to make sure we get back to that.”

The awards telecast was front-loaded with music released since the 56th annual Grammy ended its eligibility period on Sept, 30. Beyonce and Jay Z opened the show with a performance of “Drunk in Love,” her five-week-old single currently at No. 12 on the Hot 100. Hunter Hayes’ single about bullying, “Invisible,” went on sale immediately after his performance in the show’s second segment. Keith Urban‘s new single “Cop Car” and Katy Perry‘s “Dark Horse” with Juicy J, given a ghouls-’n"-goblins staging, came from albums released after the eligibility period closed.

After an hour or so, the show focused on the elements it is better known for, collaborations and celebrating past achievements. Kendrick Lamar and Imagine Dragons were paired on their two major hits, “M.A.D.D. City” and “Radioactive,” winner of the rock performance award.

Kacey Musgraves had to follow that overpowering performance with a much more restrained reading of her be-yourself anthem “Follow Your Arrow.” She won the top country awards, song (“Merry Go Round”) and album.

“I made a record inspired by real life,” she said backstage, “with all the traditional elements (of country music) — the Lorettas (Lynn), Marty Robbins. I’m working to be a part of presenting that.”

Justin Timberlake, surprisingly left out of the general categories, won twice — rap/sung collaboration for “Holy Grail” with Jay Z and R&B song for “Pusher Love Girl.” Bruno MarsUnorthodox Jukebox bested his The 20/20 Experience for pop vocal album. With two wins each, Paul McCartney pushed his total to 19 Grammys and Dave Grohl to 14.

The Beatles, who will celebrate the 50th anniversary of their arrival in the U.S. with a CBS special taping on Monday and airing Feb. 9, had a steady presence throughout the show. McCartney and Ringo Starr performed “Queenie Eye” from McCartney’s album New; Starr performed his Hot 100 No. 1 from 1973, “Photograph,” with a band that included guitarist Peter Frampton, bassist Don Was and singer Judith Hill.

McCartney won the rock song award for his recording “Cut Me Some Slack” with Grohl, Krist Novoselic and Pat Smear. Grohl received two Grammys for his studio-preservation project that yielded the film Sound City, winning compilation soundtrack for Sound City: Real to Reel.

Grohl’s concept, McCartney said, was for them to jam on Little Richard‘s “Long Tall Sally. “We’ve been there, we’ve done that,” was the Beatles’ reaction. “We should make something up.

“We only had three or four hours,” McCartney said backstage. “It was an excuse for my wife to bring the kids over for a visit with Dave’s wife and kids.” He credited, make that blamed, Johnny Depp for giving him a cigar box guitar that he wound up using. At first he was not aware of who the musicians were that Grohl was working with until he heard them talking about not performing for awhile.

“I found myself in the middle of a Nirvana reunion and I was very happy.”

Other veteran acts went home winners and made appearances. Led Zeppelin won its first-ever Grammy taking home the rock album award for their live album Celebration Day. Charlie Musselwhite, the Chicago blues harpist who turns 70 on Jan. 31, was also a first-time winner receiving the blues album trophy for his album with Ben Harper “Get Up!” Black Sabbath won their second Grammy, metal performance for “God is Dead?”

Kris Kristofferson received a lifetime achievement award and performed with Willie Nelson, Merle Haggard and Blake Shelton; Robin Thicke joined Chicago to play “Does Anybody Really Know What Time it Is” and “Beginnings” from their debut album, which went into the Grammy Hall of Fame this year, adding “Saturday in the Park” and “Blurred Lines” to their medley.

Cyndi Lauper, Ben Harper and Musselwhite, La Santa Cecilia, Roomful of Teeth and Tye Tribbett were presenters and performers during the pre-telecast who were also winners. Tribbett said he thought being asked to present was “their way of saying you didn’t win.” He was honored for gospel song and gospel album.

DUBAI/PARIS (Reuters) – Boeing (BA.N) looks set to dominate next week’s Dubai Airshow with more than $ 100 billion of deals as it aims to launch its latest long-haul jet with close to 250 potential orders from five airlines, industry sources said.

The U.S. planemaker is pressing ahead with the launch of its 777X mini-jumbo despite uncertainty over where it will be made, with workers at the existing 777 plant outside Seattle holding a ballot over a new employment contract on Wednesday.

Bulging civil and military bank balances in the Gulf remain a magnet for Western aerospace executives as they seek to tap thriving demand for jetliners and combat aircraft that offer some respite from defense cuts at home.

A widely expected potential order for as many as 150 of the new 777X passenger jets from Dubai flag carrier Emirates EMIRA.UL could come close to matching the $ 62 billion of deals amassed at the last Dubai show two years ago.

“Dubai’s success is related to its airlines. It’s a global hub now and Dubai did this by buying planes and constantly renewing its fleet,” said John Sfakianakis, chief investment strategist at Riyadh-based asset management firm Masic.

“Abu Dhabi, Qatar and Saudi Arabia are also investing billions in aviation to be able to connect to the world. These states have to continue to invest if they want to expand.”

After playing cat and mouse with rival Airbus (EAD.PA) in the market for big twin-engined jets, industry sources say that Boeing is expected to launch the 777X on Sunday with the record Emirates deal and 25 jets for Abu Dhabi’s Etihad.

Depending on final negotiations, which historically provide some last-minute drama at such shows, Boeing could also announce orders for dozens of 777X jets from Qatar Airways and Hong Kong’s Cathay Pacific (0293.HK) during the Middle East’s largest business event, which runs from November 17 to 21.

The 777X launch will also include confirmation of a tentative 34-plane order from Germany’ Lufthansa (LHAG.DE).

SPUR FOR GROWTH

Leading Gulf airlines have made Boeing’s long-distance 777 warhorse and other big jets a spur for growth as they redraw the world’s aviation and logistics map around the Gulf.

The revamped 777X is the largest twinjet yet designed and will come in two versions, seating 350 to 406 people. It is Boeing’s response to the Airbus A350-1000, which will seat 350 in three classes or about 380 people in two classes.

Boeing has had to overcome disagreement among potential buyers over the design of the 777X, with Gulf airlines pushing for high capacity with the stamina of four-engined jets. But a person familiar with the design said it may suffer restrictions on payload for the longest trips from the Gulf.

The U.S. company hopes the airshow will also mark a turning point for the 787 Dreamliner after its temporary grounding this year because of melting batteries. Industry sources expect orders to top 1,000 in Dubai as Etihad buys a further 30, while Airbus is in negotiations to sell competing models of its A350.

The latest medium-haul aircraft will also be in focus as flydubai places a $ 7.8 billion order for 75 of the revamped Boeing 737 MAX and Airbus negotiates to sell A320neos to airlines that may include Etihad, industry sources said.

A380 SEEKS LIFT

Qatar Airways, which has complained about the reliability of its 787s, has said it may buy more Airbus A330s.

But Airbus, which outsold Boeing in the first nine months of the year, will be looking to end a dearth of orders this year for its A380, the world’s largest airliner.

Doric Lease Corp aims to firm up an order for 20 of the superjumbos “soon”, its top executive told Reuters last month.

The European company co-operates closely with the largest A380 customer Emirates, which has consistently said it could buy up to 30 more of the aircraft once it unlocks extra capacity in its network to handle the double-decker jets.

Next week’s show will fill an area the size of the U.S. Pentagon at the new Dubai World Central airport, where airline bosses will rub shoulders with arms merchants and royalty.

Western defense companies have long viewed the Middle East as among the world’s most lucrative markets but are facing unfamiliar challenges as divisions grow between Washington and Gulf allies over Iran nuclear talks set to resume on Nov 20.

“The political situation with Iran is so fluid that today’s friends and allies may be tomorrow’s distant partners,” said Theodore Karasik, research director at Dubai think-tank INEGMA.

The United Arab Emirates is moving closer to a long-awaited decision on whether to buy up to 60 UK-backed Eurofighter Typhoons or French Rafale fighters. It is also expected to buy 25 Lockheed Martin (LMT.N) F-16 fighters, sources familiar with the deal told Reuters.

“These countries may be in disagreement with the U.S. over Iran, Syria and other issues, but their military relationship remains strong,” Karasik said.

NEW YORK | Tue Aug 13, 2013 6:08am EDT

NEW YORK (Reuters) – Newark Mayor Cory Booker seemed poised for victory on Tuesday as New Jersey voters head to the polls to select party nominees in the race to fill the state’s empty U.S. Senate seat.

Booker, a Democrat, holds a strong lead in public opinion polls, with a 37-point edge over his nearest challenger among likely Democratic voters in one recent survey.

But with the primary being held amid the summer vacation season, voter turnout will have a significant impact on the actual results, said David Redlawsk, a professor of political science at Rutgers University and director of the Eagleton Center for Public Interest Polling.

“In this election, it’s dramatically difficult to figure out who a likely voter is. Half the state’s down the shore,” Redlawsk said.

The concern, and controversy, over the timing of the election emerged promptly after the Senate seat came open with the death in June of Senator Frank Lautenberg at age 89. The liberal Democrat had been elected to the Senate five times.

To fill the seat, Republican Governor Chris Christie called the August 13 primary and set the special election for October 16, three weeks ahead of the November 5 general election when he is seeking re-election.

Democrats charged that the two fall elections should have been scheduled for the same day but that Christie was avoiding being on the same ballot as Booker, who could attract both strong Democratic and minority turnout.

Also seeking the Democratic party’s nomination on Tuesday are Representative Frank Pallone, who has polled in second place, Representative Rush Holt and state Assembly Speaker Sheila Oliver.

But they have found little traction against the well-funded and well-known Booker, considered a rising political star.

The Newark mayor has enjoyed the support of celebrities such as Oprah Winfrey and he has made himself a presence on social media with a prolific Twitter account and penchant for responding to constituent requests.

He once rushed into a burning building to help save a woman from the smoke and flames in her apartment.

“Famously willing to run after a mugger or into a burning building, and to move into the projects and play late-night basketball with kids there, the Rhodes scholar and Stanford- and Yale-educated lawyer grabbed headlines but also restored a sense of hope to the neglected city,” the Philadelphia Inquirer wrote in its endorsement of Booker.

He is credited with bringing in $ 1 billion in new development into Newark, including the city’s first new downtown hotel in 40 years and the relocation of major companies, including Panasonic, which is building a new North American headquarters downtown.

The New York Times, in its endorsement of Booker, noted that under his tenure, Newark schools got a $ 100 million gift from Facebook’s Mark Zuckerberg.

Booker has “made a national name for himself by bringing new thinking, honesty and compassion to the hidebound, corrupt and cold city government in Newark,” the Times wrote.

Opponents have criticized his ambitious nature and asked whether whether he is more concerned with himself than with his constituents. An article in The New York Times last week raised questions about the circumstances of Booker’s stake in an Internet start-up company and his close involvement with Silicon Valley executives.

On the Republican side, Steve Lonegan, former mayor of Bogota, New Jersey, is vying with Alieta Eck, a physician, for the party’s spot in the October 16 special general election.

Lonegan, a Tea Party conservative, led Eck 74 to 10 percent among Republican likely voters in a Quinnipiac University poll taken earlier this month.

That poll showed Booker leading 54 to 29 percent over Lonegan in a general election matchup.
