Faith and Bible Tales Make Believers of Hollywood

“The Greatest Story Ever Told,” is not the greatest movie ever made, but the 1965 epic about the life of Christ at least understood the nature of its source material. The Bible, Old and New Testaments alike, as a rich vein of subject matter – and profits – for the movie industry.

Then in the late 1960s, Hollywood made it’s hard left turn and God and the Bible were all but forgotten in Tinsel Town.

But this year, the movie industry seems to have rediscovered the Bible as a very marketable/lucrative subject. Three major movies will be released based on Biblical narrative, with another five faith-themed movies also coming to theatres in 2014. Four more Bible-themed movies are in the works for 2015.

According to Gallup, half of Americans identify as “Christian” or “Protestant” with another 24% identifying as “Catholic.” Maybe Hollywood has finally realized that it pays to pay attention to religious audiences.

Some of these movies, such as Darron Aronofsky’s big budget epic, “Noah,” and the Jesus bio-pic, “Son of God,” based on the popular television series “The Bible,” have been heavily promoted and covered by the media. Others have flown under the radar, like Ridley Scott’s “Exodus” starring Christian Bale, set to be released the end of the year (Dec. 12.). Continues after the video.

Mixed Reactions from Christians and Critics

But despite Hollywood’s faith in these movies’ money-making potential, some media critics couldn’t help making jabs at the films, simply because of their theme.

On Feb. 18, CNN Newsroom asked entertainment columnist Michael Musto of the gay website, Out.com for his thoughts on these movies. Musto sneered: “The country is changing [but] some people are still clinging to religion will like these films.”

Haters will hate, but the rise in Bible-based movies has excited Christian audiences. One movie in particular, Son of God, received overwhelming support from both Protestant and Catholic Christians alike. Megachurch pastors across the country have bought out theatres in advanceto show to their churches. The list includes Rick Warren of Saddleback Church, to Joel Osteen of LakeWood Church in Houston to Archbishop Jose Gomez, the Archdiocese of Los Angeles, along with many other religious leaders. Combined, these churches have over $ 100,000 in attendance each week, and the Archdiocese of Los Angeles has over 4 million members.

Conversely, one film on the list, has received it’s share of criticism from it’s market audience, according to Variety. Christian movie-goers complained that Russell Crowe’s “Noah” depicted him as a religious nut, and the movie contained modern-day messages about environmentalism.

Brian Godawa, a Christian movie screenwriter who reviewed Aronofsky’s script, told The Christian Post: “If you were expecting a Biblically faithful retelling of the story of the greatest mariner in history and a tale of redemption and obedience to God you’ll be sorely disappointed.” Godawa further criticized the environmental message in the movie, saying the film was, “in short, an anachronistic doomsday scenario of ancient global warming. How Neolithic man was able to cause such anthropogenic catastrophic climate change without the ‘evil’ carbon emissions of modern industrial revolution is not explained.”

The film’s star, Russell Crowe, had his own Biblical analysis, which was featured on Good Morning America, Dec.27: “They consider “Noah” to be a benevolent figure. I’m like, are you kidding me? This is a dude that stood by and watched the entire population of the planet perish. So I think people are going to be quite surprised what “Noah” actually really means.”

It shouldn’t be surprising that films stray from strict interpretations, according to Ted Baehr, Editor-in-Chief of Movieguide, the conservative Christian film review site. “People of different opinions” will make a movie according to their perspective, Baehr said. “Even [1961 life of Christ film] ‘King of Kings’ had a 10-minute beginning with an orgy scene.”

Interestingly, Paramount Pictures, the studio that released “Noah,” has pushed back on the polls that showed Christian audiences didn’t like the film. Paramount Pictures attacked the poll and Variety for promoting the poll, saying the poll doesn’t specifically mention “Noah.” Yet Faith Driven Consumer, the poll organizer, defended its survey, saying the poll clearly asks about that film. Maybe Paramount is so upset because the film studio tried it’s hardest to appeal to Christian audiences, testing several different cuts of the film before audiences to get the most approval from religious audiences.

It would behoove Hollywood to pay more attention to Christian audiences. According to Movie Guide, 9 out of 10 of the highest grossing movies of 2013 contained “strong, or very strong Christian, Biblical or moral worldviews”and “no explicit sexual nudity, no Anti-American or anti-patriotic content.”

Faith Films Hitting Mainstream

Besides Biblical epics, films with a Christian message will also be shown in theatres this year. Last year, former Disney star Vanessa Hudgens was praised for her role in what some considereda pro-life, pro-adoption movie, “Gimme Shelter.” This year, movies about Christian persecution and spiritual experiences will be in theatres.

The first film, to be released March 21, called “God’s not dead,”is about a Christian college student (Shane Harper, “Good Luck Charlie,”) who is called to defend his belief in God by his atheist philosophy professor (Kevin Sorbo “Hercules.”) The movie also stars Dean Cain (“Lois and Clark,”) and Willie and Korie Robertson of A&E’s popular television show, “Duck Dynasty.”Continued after the video.

A New York Times bestseller, “Heaven is for Real,”a non-fiction narrative of a young boy who biologically dies and comes back to life, will come to theatres on Easter.

Two films about religious persecution are also opening in 2014. “Persecuted,”featuring Fox News anchor Gretchen Carlson, stars James Remar (“Dexter”) as a popular evangelist who is targeted by the government, for not adhering to a new law that requires religious leaders to be inclusive of all religions in their preaching. According to The Christian Post and the American Center for Law and Justice (ACLJ) the fictional law is similar to a real life resolution passed by the United Nations. The film is set to come out in the Spring.

Another film with the same title, (but with a much smaller budget), is in production this year as well. “Persecuted”is about a KGB officer who is ordered to infiltrate the Christian church in Soviet era Russia but falls in love with a Christian girl along the way.

The best-selling Christian fiction series, “Left Behind,” will be gettinga reboot starring Nicolas Cage and Chad Michael Murray.

More Films in 2015

Other films potentially coming out next year include the Will Smith directed, “Redemption of Cain,”“Pontius Pilate,” with Brad Pitt, Moses re-telling “Gods and Kings,” with rumored director Ang Lee; and a film on the Virgin Mary, called “Mary, mother of God.”

It seems like a spigot has opened, from which you could conclude that there has been institutional hostility toward Bible- and faith-based projects. But Ted Baehr isn’t so sure. Asked if a stigma attached to writers, directors and actors involved in Christian movies, he said, “I don’t think so. At the Producers Guild, Mark Burnett [“The Bible” and “Son of God”] was named the #1 producer on television”

And while he acknowledged there are sometimes special hurdles for Christian films to be produced and distributed, Baehr believes “It depends who it is. Fox/Lionsgate/Sony has a division for Christian films, Roadside Attractions,” which is a distributor. “Studios are complex,” Baehr said. “It depends on who is in the right position. It really depends on who you know. Hollywood is all about relationships.”

And right now, Hollywood seems intent on building a relationship with Christian audiences.

Faith Group Head: A&E Should Reinstate Robertson, Be Open to Bible

In the wake of its growing “Duck Dynasty” controversy, the A&E cable network needs to adopt a “worldview” and be more open to different opinions, including the teachings of the Bible, says Chris Stone, president of Faith Driven Consumer.

“Our culture has conditioned us to the response of, if anything is contrary to certain agendas, then it must be shouted down and censored,” Stone told “The Steve Malzberg Show” on Newsmax TV.

“And our viewpoint is … let the marketplace decide.”

Story continues below video.

Stone, whose group strives to create a more faith-compatible marketplace, has launched IStandWithPhil.com, an online petition calling on A&E to immediately reinstate Phil Robertson to “Duck Dynasty.”

Robertson, a born-again Christian, was suspended from his show because of controversial comments he made about gays to GQ magazine.

“Start with homosexual behavior and just morph out from there. Bestiality, sleeping around with this woman and that woman and that woman and those men,” Robertson, 67, told the magazine.

He then paraphrased from the New Testament: “Don’t be deceived. Neither the adulterers, the idolaters, the male prostitutes, the homosexual offenders, the greedy, the drunkards, the slanderers, the swindlers — they won’t inherit the kingdom of God.”

Stone said A&E must have more tolerance, and is certainly seeing the wrath of Richardson’s supporters.

“We’ve had tremendous support; a little over 120,000 people have signed the petition. We’ve had over 2 million page views of our website — just a tremendous outpouring of support,” he said.

“Curiously, we’ve had even commenters who signed the petition who said they were in fact members of the LGBT [Lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender] community and said that while I don’t believe and I don’t share Phil’s point of view, I do support his ability to say it.”

Stone wasn’t surprised by the cable network’s reaction, but wants its executives to do some soul searching.

“First and foremost, we’re asking for Phil to be reinstated, and that will be a business decision that A&E will have to make. We’re also asking A&E to consider an alternative worldview; a worldview simply as the lens through which we all see the world,” he said.

“What we have is a collision of two worldviews here: those people who have biblically-based, an orthodox biblical worldview, and those that have a different point of view.”

Obama’s IRS Nominee Promises to Restore Faith in Taxation Enforcement Agency

Obama and Senate work together to save government’s confiscatory agency

Obama has selected John Koskinen to head up the scandal-ridden Internal Revenue Service. Koskinen, who warms a seat on the board of American Capital and has experience running a government soccer foundation, told the Senate Finance Committee today he will restore faith in the IRS.

“In every area of the IRS, taxpayers need to be confident that they will be treated fairly no matter what their backgrounds or their affiliations,” Koskinen said. “Public trust is the IRS’ most important and valuable asset.”

Acting IRS boss Danny Werfel gets grilled: Government desperate to get its major confiscatory agency out of the crosshairs.

Trust is not an asset for the IRS. Fear is. Most Americans dutifully submit bureaucratic paperwork on April 15 out of fear, not a sense of obligation or duty to government.

Since Obama was chosen to read a teleprompter and robosign legislation for the global elite, the IRS has been increasingly put to the test as a political weapon. It was used in the past by other presidents to persecute political opponents, but the agency was switched into overdrive after the appointment of Barry Obama, the CIA groomed front man for the ruling elite.

Due to partisan politics and revelations of over-the-top targeting of tea party organizations by the agency, acting IRS Commissioner Steven Miller was forced to step down in May after the Treasury Inspector General for tax administration released an audit accusing the agency of illegally targeting political groups opposed to Obama. Obama’s handpicked temp, Danny Werfel, will step aside if Mr. Koskinen gets the nod.

It looks like Koskinen is a shoo-in. The chairman of the Finance Committee, Montana Senator Max Baucus, and Utah Senator Orrin Hatch, who is top dog on the committee, said they back the bankster minion Koskinen. It looks like he will be ushered in with no serious opposition and will rule the IRS for the next five years.

Koskinen said he will work with the committee to resolve any issues regarding the targeting of tea party and conservative groups, according to the Washington Times. Since Koskinen is an Obama political pick, however, it is not clear what sort of reform will occur at the agency.

They Actually Expect Us To Have Faith In These Financial Markets After This Week?

NASDAQ MarketSite TV studio - Photo by Luis Villa del CampoWhat in the world is happening to our financial markets?  Trading on the Nasdaq was halted on Thursday for more than 3 hours, and the only formal explanation that we got was that it was a “technical issue”.  On Tuesday, Goldman Sachs made thousands of “erroneous trades” that are now being canceled.  If those trades had not been canceled, it could have cost Goldman “hundreds of millions of dollars” according to the Wall Street Journal.  How nice for them that they get a “do over”.  When Knight Capital made a similar “trading error”, they were not so fortunate.  Our financial system has become completely and totally dependent on computers, and that means that it is extremely vulnerable.  After what we have witnessed this week, how can they actually expect us to have faith in these financial markets?  And what happens if these “technical issues” get even worse?

The stoppage on the Nasdaq on Thursday was unprecedented.  Trading in literally thousands of stocks and options was halted.  Big names like Apple, Netflix, Intel and Facebook were affected.

As of right now, officials are not telling us what caused the “technical issue”, but there are rumblings that hacking was involved.

And the Nasdaq would hardly be the first exchange to be hacked.  In fact, according to NBC News, about half of all the security exchanges around the world were hacked last year.

USA Today is suggesting that a group of Iranian hackers known as “Cyber Fighters of Izz ad-Din al-Qassam” may be responsible for what happened to the Nasdaq.  Apparently they have been quite active since last September…

The first wave of denial-of-service attacks attributed to the Cyber Fighters of Izz ad-Din al-Qassam began last September and lasted about six weeks. Knocked offline for various periods of time were Wells Fargo, U.S. Bank, Bank of America, JPMorgan Chase & Co. and PNC Bank.

The second wave commenced in December and lasted seven weeks, knocking out mid-tier banks and credit unions.

And a third wave of high-powered denial-of-service attacks commenced in March targeting credit card companies and financial brokerages.

But of course the Iranians have not been the only ones hacking financial institutions.  According to Gartner banking security analyst Avivah Litan, some “profit-minded hackers” have had quite a bit of success attacking U.S. banks…

More recently, a copycat group of profit-minded hackers has conducted denial-of-service attacks against certain U.S. banks as a smoke screen to divert attention while they execute an Ocean’s 11-style wire transfer fraud.

Litan earlier this month blogged about that caper. These bad guys, she says, set into motion sophisticated denial-of-service attacks that overwhelmed pretty sturdy bank network security. While tech staff labored manually to get the banks’ websites back into service, the crooks scrambled behind the scenes to extract funds from a bank employee’s privileged account, which they had gained access to.

Instead of getting into one customer account at a time, the criminals used the employee’s account to control the master payment switch for wire transfers, and moved as much money as they could from as many accounts as possible for as long as possible, Litan reports.

“Considerable financial damage has resulted from these attacks,” says Litan.

However, let’s certainly not blame all of the “technical issues” in the financial markets on hackers.  What happened to Goldman Sachs on Tuesday appears to be very much their own fault

A programming error at Goldman Sachs Group Inc. caused unintended stock-option orders to flood American exchanges this morning, roiling markets and shaking confidence in electronic trading infrastructure.

An internal system that Goldman Sachs uses to help prepare to meet market demand for equity options inadvertently produced orders with inaccurate price limits and sent them to exchanges, said a person familiar with the situation, who asked not to be named because the information is private. The size of the losses depends on which trades are canceled, the person said. Some have already been voided, data compiled by Bloomberg show.

Of course if those trades had made hundreds of millions of dollars for Goldman they would have been allowed to stand.

But because Goldman was about to lose hundreds of millions of dollars authorities worked very rapidly to start “breaking” those trades.

This is just another example that shows how much of a joke our financial system has become.

Wall Street has become a massive computerized casino, and at some point this fraudulent house of cards is going to come crashing down hard.

The seeds for all of this were planted back in the late 1990s.  The Glass-Steagall Act was repealed and the big banks started to go hog wild.

And according to an absolutely shocking memo uncovered by investigative reporter Greg Palast, a certain U.S. Treasury official was at the heart of the plot to make this possible…

When a little birdie dropped the End Game memo through my window, its content was so explosive, so sick and plain evil, I just couldn’t believe it.

The Memo confirmed every conspiracy freak’s fantasy: that in the late 1990s, the top US Treasury officials secretly conspired with a small cabal of banker big-shots to rip apart financial regulation across the planet. When you see 26.3 percent unemployment in Spain, desperation and hunger in Greece, riots in Indonesia and Detroit in bankruptcy, go back to this End Game memo, the genesis of the blood and tears.

The Treasury official playing the bankers’ secret End Game was Larry Summers. Today, Summers is Barack Obama’s leading choice for Chairman of the US Federal Reserve, the world’s central bank.

If Summers and U.S. Treasury Secretary Robert Rubin had not been working so hard for the benefit of the big banks, we might not be facing a quadrillion dollar derivatives bubble today…

The year was 1997. US Treasury Secretary Robert Rubin was pushing hard to de-regulate banks. That required, first, repeal of the Glass-Steagall Act to dismantle the barrier between commercial banks and investment banks. It was like replacing bank vaults with roulette wheels.

Second, the banks wanted the right to play a new high-risk game: “derivatives trading”. JP Morgan alone would soon carry $ 88 trillion of these pseudo-securities on its books as “assets”.

Deputy Treasury Secretary Summers (soon to replace Rubin as Secretary) body-blocked any attempt to control derivatives.

But what was the use of turning US banks into derivatives casinos if money would flee to nations with safer banking laws?

The answer conceived by the Big Bank Five: eliminate controls on banks in every nation on the planet — in one single move. It was as brilliant as it was insanely dangerous.

To learn more about how they used the WTO to transform the global financial system into a gigantic casino, head on over and read the rest of Palast’s outstanding article right here.

And you know what is truly frightening?

Larry Summers appears to be Barack Obama’s top choice to become the next chairman of the Federal Reserve.

That statement should send chills up your spine.

The truth is that Larry Summers should not even be running a Dairy Queen, much less the most powerful financial institution on the planet.

If Larry Summers becomes the next head of the Federal Reserve, it will be an unmitigated disaster.

But it looks like that is exactly what we are going to get.

We are rapidly heading toward the next major global financial crisis, and on top of everything else we will probably have Larry Summers running things soon.

What a nightmare.
