It’s been a disastrous couple of weeks for President Barack Obama. His signature legislation, the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, is a slow-motion train wreck. His poll numbers have tanked.

Now, things have gotten so bad for Obama that even former president Jimmy Carter has called President Obama incompetent in the family-friendly pages of Parade magazine.

“He’s done the best he could under the circumstances,” Carter said of Obama in an interviewed published on Thursday. “His major accomplishment was Obamacare, and the implementation of it now is questionable at best.”

Carter presided over what was, until the current recession, the longest period of economic stagnation since the Great Depression. There was runaway inflation, high unemployment and an ongoing energy crisis. There was a hostage crisis in Iran involving the capture and imprisonment of 52 Americans for 444 days.

In the summer of 1979, Carter gave one of the least effective speeches any president in the history of the American presidency. The deeply unpopular “Crisis of Confidence” speech became widely known as Carter’s “malaise” speech.

Carter lost his 1980 reelection bid to Ronald Reagan by an electoral vote total of 489 to 49. He won only six states, along with the District of Columbia.

The 39th president’s Parade interview touched on several subjects in addition to Obamacare including his grandson’s role in a hidden camera video of Mitt Romney, the Middle East, the Trayvon Martin case and the recent tribulations of fellow Georgian Paula Deen.

Carter’s wife Rosalynn was also present at the interview and contributed to it.

When asked “how he hopes history will remember him,” Carter joined the rest of America in preferring to skip over his presidency. “I’d like to be judged primarily by our work at the Carter Center for the last 32 years,” he told the magazine. “I don’t mean to exclude the White House. But in my more self-satisfied moments, I think about our unwavering promotion of peace and human rights.”

WASHINGTON – Former President Jimmy Carter has become the target of a class action lawsuit over ostensibly mean things he said about Israel in his best-selling 2006 book, Palestine: Peace Not Apartheid.




The lawsuit, filed in New York by an Israeli firm, alleges that the book “contained numerous false and knowingly misleading statements intended to promote the author’s agenda of anti-Israel propaganda and to deceive the reading public instead of presenting accurate information as advertised.”




The five American plaintiffs, two of whom are dual citizens of the US and Israel, seek $ 5 million in damages over the book (which is being sold for less than $ 10 on Amazon) on the basis that its criticisms of Israel violated consumer protection safeguards.




The plaintiffs alleged in a press release that the 39th US president and Nobel Peace Prize winner “violated the law and, thus, harmed those who purchased the book” by unfairly “attacking Israel.”




Attorney Nitsana Darshan-Leitner said her clients’ lawsuit “will expose all the falsehoods and misrepresentations in Carter’s book and prove that his hatred of Israel has led him to commit this fraud on the public.”




Publishing company Simon & Schuster, which is also targeted in the lawsuit, dismissed it as a frivolous act and a “chilling attack on free speech that we intend to defend vigorously.”




“This lawsuit is frivolous, without merit, and is a transparent attempt by the plaintiffs, despite their contentions, to punish the author, a Nobel Peace prize winner and world-renowned statesmen, and his publisher, for writing and publishing a book with which the plaintiffs simply disagree,” Simon & Schuster spokesman Adam Rothberg told the Washington Post.

Fallon stuck to 80s songs, (A-ha’s “Take On Me” and The Human League’s “Don’t You Want Me”) while Merchant chose 90s hip-hop jam “Boom! Shake the Room” by DJ Jazzy Jeff and Beyoncé’s “Single Ladies.” Gordon-Levitt first opted for a classic, Elton John’s “Tiny Dancer,” but surprised everyone with his rendition of Nicki Minaj’s “Superbass.”

He wrote: “One of your floats thought it would be ‘funny’ to do a cover of the theme tune from Jim with Fix it, and thought this would be seen as humour? Am sorry, in light of the events surrounding that programme and the revelations since it I feel that was a step way over the line.

“What I hoped would be a pleasant night and a good memory has now been tainted. I can see a lot of work went into the parade but fear that will be the outstanding memory for all who had the misfortune to witness it.

“Humour is funny. That was just out of order.”

But festival bosses claimed they had never censored anyone from entering the parade and it was up to individuals “own conscience” when entering the parade.

Maria Joaquin also posted on the site: “It is staggering truly beyond belief that *anyone* could be so thoughtless, stupid, ignorant, insensitive to do such a thing.

“And contrary to the statement of the Lauder Common Riding Committee it is not in any sense an issue of ‘censorship’ – to use that as a defence for the committee’s total abrogation of responsibility is simply nauseating.”

Some of the comments on the Lauder Common Riding Committee’s social networking page have since been removed.

Christine Grahame MSP whose constituency includes the area, said she thought the float was in “poor taste” and was a “serious misjudgement.”

The parade took place as part of the Lauder Common Riding programme in the Scottish borders, held to celebrate the Royal Burgh’s history.

In response to the comments on the Facebook page, organisers said: “Lauder Common Riding Committee is responsible for running one of the oldest and largest equestrian events in Europe.

“Our main aim is to ensure this event is run safely and for the enjoyment of spectators and the many hundreds who take part in all our events. This we have done very successfully both this year and in the past.

“Our fancy dress parade is only one element of our week and is a long-standing tradition. We have never censored anyone who has entered the event. It is up to the individuals who enter and their conscience to decide how they wish to express themselves and approach the event.

“People spectate and take part of their own free will. This year we did not receive any complaints about any of the entrants.

“We are obviously dismayed and understand that people are upset by the coverage one of the entries has received; however, we would reiterate that the committee does not condone or condemn the individual’s right to enter the parade in their own way.”

The BBC recently set aside £19.1 million for compensation claims, which are likely to include victims who were abused by Savile. Many of his 214 known offences took place on BBC sites.

A Scotland Yard and NSPCC report published last year found Savile spent “every waking minute” thinking about abusing children and used his celebrity status to win their trust.

If it’s him, it’s going to be a letdown.

For the better part of 40 years, the disappearance of former Teamsters President James Hoffa has been a source of fascination on par with Bigfoot, the Loch Ness Monster and the aliens in Roswell, N.M.

If the FBI finds and identifies his body, as agents are currently trying to do just outside Detroit, it will end the mystery and ruin the suspense, says Bob Thompson, a pop culture professor at Syracuse University.

“If it turns out it is Jimmy Hoffa, the story loses all its punch,” Thompson says. “Closure is the death knell to these kinds of things.”

Hoffa disappeared in 1975. In terms of becoming a figure of popular interest, his timing was impeccable — it was not long after the first two Godfather films had been released, bringing mob culture to the forefront of broad American consciousness.

The presumption from the start was that Hoffa had been killed by mobsters who wanted to keep him from regaining control of the union, so he became the real-life embodiment of interest in the mafia and the whole metaphor of “sleeping with the fishes.”

The notion that Hoffa’s body might turn up just about anywhere — there have been numerous false leads along the way — became an enduring part of American folklore. The belief that he may have been buried in the end zone at Giants Stadium, which gained currency in the late 1980s, provided fodder for countless cartoons and wisecracks.

Saturday Night Live even speculated that Hoffa was inside R2-D2 in the 1977 film Star Wars.

By that time, Hoffa’s disappearance had been enshrined as part of the culture. The 1970s and 1980s were a time when compelling stories were routinely turned into movies and TV miniseries. Hoffa kept recurring as a juicy part for years.

Sylvester Stallone played a character based on him in F.I.S.T. in 1978. Five years later, Robert Blake played him in Blood Feud, which depicted Hoffa’s conflicts with Robert F. Kennedy, who had hounded him as a Senate staffer.

He was played by none other than Jack Nicholson in 1992′s eponymous Hoffa, and as late as 2003 provided a plotline in Bruce Almighty.

All this helped Hoffa sink in deep as fodder for comedians, who used his name as a punchline when talking about anything that had disappeared or seemed impossible to find.

There’s always a fascination with missing persons stories, says Thompson, the Syracuse professor. Everyone knows we all must die, but people who go missing entirely tap into primal fears.

That’s why some figures, from 1930s aviatrix Amelia Earhart to the three women found living in a house in Cleveland last month, remain so intriguing years after they first went missing.

If Jimmy Hoffa were somehow still alive, he would be 100 years old.

“Hoffa is really still in the Hall of Fame of compelling mysteries,” Thompson says.
