VIDEO: Lea Michele Opens Up About Cory Monteith

In a recent interview with TV Week Australia, Lea Michele opened up about the loss of her boyfriend and co-star, Cory Monteith. The part Spanish actress tells the mag “I feel like, for me personally, I’ve lost two people, Cory and Finn.” The Glee star says that she has not yet seen the tribute episode dedicated to Cory. Lea adds that the cast had “a beautiful memorial for Cory in the auditorium and some of the cast members sang and people spoke about him, and it only felt right that we do the same thing for Finn, so I felt it was very therapeutic.” Lea wants Cory to be remembered for much more than his death, and said that “there was no greater man than Cory, so for the time we spent together I consider myself lucky.”

Matthew Morrison’s Show Nods to Cory Monteith at 54 Below

Michelle V. Agins/The New York Times

Matthew Morrison opening his cabaret show at 54 Below on Sunday, the day after his “Glee” co-star Cory Monteith was found dead.

Matthew Morrison’s show on Sunday evening at 54 Below began with a tribute to Cory Monteith, his co-star on the Fox musical-comedy series “Glee,” who died on Saturday. Mr. Morrison’s pensive rendition of “What I Did for Love” from “A Chorus Line,” accompanied on piano by Brad Ellis, was an appropriate gesture: Unadorned, sober and farsighted, it spoke for itself. At 34, Mr. Morrison is three years older than Mr. Monteith was, and he said he regarded him as a brother.

Revealing himself to be a performer of many parts, Mr. Morrison — outfitted in a cream-colored suit, hat, and bow tie — struck the pose of a cool, suave, modern song-and-dance man. His disciplined presentation combined elements of Hugh Jackman, Harry Connick Jr., Michael Jackson and Justin Timberlake, but without flamboyant showmanship or emotional display.

Whirling in place, strutting, kicking, tipping his hat and treating the microphone like a vaudevillian’s cane, he used every inch of the limited space while maintaining a poker-faced detachment. Performing “Singin’ in the Rain,” he showed the ease and physical grace to carry it off, but not the pure joy that Gene Kelly imprinted on the song.

There was no trace of the impassioned, operatic tenor that Mr. Morrison unfurled as Fabrizio in “The Light in the Piazza.” A song like “On the Street Where You Live” from “My Fair Lady,” the declamatory ballad popularized by Vic Damone, was sped up as it often is nowadays, into a fast-swing number in which flowery lyrics that sound quaint in the age of the hookup, were swallowed by the swing.

The band, led by Mr. Ellis (the piano player on “Glee”), included Daniel Kalisher on guitar, Nathan Light on bass, Chase Baird on saxophone and Valerie Franco on drums. Its lean, sinewy arrangements reflected Mr. Morrison’s no-nonsense attitude.

If a certain passion was missing from an otherwise impeccable performance, Mr. Morrison, with his sleek Guy Madison looks and cool self-assurance, came across as a talent of formidable versatility and intelligence. Anyone who saw him in “The Light in the Piazza” knows that passion is there. On Sunday evening, he didn’t unpack it.

Matthew Morrison performs through Wednesday at 54 Below, 254 West 54th Street, Manhattan, (646)476-3551 or 54.com.

"Glee" star Cory Monteith found dead in Vancouver hotel room

Cory Monteith, Star of Hit Show ‘Glee,’ Found Dead

VANCOUVER, British Columbia — Cory Monteith, the handsome young actor who shot to fame in the hit TV series “Glee” but was beset by addiction struggles so fierce that he once said he was lucky to be alive, was found dead in a hotel room, police said. He was 31.

Monteith, who played the character Finn Hudson on the TV series about a high school glee club, was found dead in his room on the 21st floor of the Fairmont Pacific Rim Hotel on Vancouver’s waterfront at about noon Saturday, according to police.

Deputy Police Chief Doug Lepard said there was no indication of foul play. Monteith’s body was found by hotel staff after he missed his check-out time, Lepard said.

“We do not have a great deal of information as to cause of death,” Coroner Lisa Lapointe said.

Lepard said Monteith had been out with people earlier and that those people are being interviewed.

In April, he admitted himself to a treatment facility for “substance addiction” and asked for privacy as he took steps toward recovery, a representative said at the time.

Lea Michele, his “Glee” co-star and real-life girlfriend, told People magazine that she loved and supported Monteith and was proud he was seeking help.

It was not Monteith’s first time in rehab. He received treatment when he was 19 and had previously talked about his addiction struggles, saying he had a serious problem and took just “anything and everything.”

He told Parade in 2011 that he was “lucky to be alive.”

Monteith, who turned 31 on May 11, starred in “Glee” as Finn Hudson, a high school football player who puts his status and popularity at risk to join the glee club and its outcast members. Michele played his on-air girlfriend in “Glee,” Rachel Berry.

The show, with its pop music-based musical numbers and high-profile guest stars including Gwyneth Paltrow, became an immediate hit and made stars of its relatively unknown cast.

On his Twitter account, Monteith described himself as “tall, awkward, canadian, actor, drummer, person.”

(AP) — Cory Monteith, the handsome young actor who shot to fame in the hit TV series “Glee” but was beset by addiction struggles so fierce that he once said he was lucky to be alive, was found dead in a hotel room, police said. He was 31.

Monteith, who played the character Finn Hudson on the Fox TV series about a high school glee club, was found dead in his room on the 21st floor of the Fairmont Pacific Rim Hotel on Vancouver’s waterfront at about noon Saturday, according to police.

“I have no words! My heart is broken,” Dot-Marie Jones, who plays football coach Shannon Beiste on “Glee,” said in a post on her Twitter account Saturday night. She called Monteith a “hell of a friend” and an “amazing” man.

“What an absolutely tragic loss of a very talented young man,” tweeted Zooey Deschanel, star of another Fox show, “New Girl.”

Fox and the producers of “Glee,” including 20th Century Fox Television, called him an exceptional performer “and an even more exceptional person. He was a true joy to work with and we will all miss him tremendously.”

“We are in shock and mourning this tragic loss,” his representatives at Viewpoint Public Relations in Los Angeles said in a statement.

In April, Monteith admitted himself to a treatment facility for “substance addiction” and asked for privacy as he took steps toward recovery, a representative said at the time.

Lea Michele, his “Glee” co-star and real-life girlfriend, told People magazine that she loved and supported him and was proud he was seeking help.

The show, with its pop music-based song-and-dance numbers and high-profile guest stars including Gwyneth Paltrow, became an immediate hit and made stars of its relatively unknown cast.

The series, which debuted in 2009, is in its fourth season.

On his Twitter account, Monteith described himself as “tall, awkward, canadian, actor, drummer, person.”

In a 2010 interview with The Associated Press, Monteith was upbeat about life. He said that if “Glee” were to be canceled he would be OK.

“I’ve never been afraid of working,” he said. “I’ve never been afraid of auditioning for jobs. Obviously, I’ve never been afraid of anonymity. I was happy (before ‘Glee’). I’m happy now. I guess I’m well adjusted.”

Monteith was among the “Glee” actors who remained series regulars as their characters graduated high school and moved on to other adventures.

According to his biography on Fox’s website, Monteith was born in Calgary, Alberta, and moved to Vancouver Island as a child. Before turning to acting, he held a variety of jobs including Wal-Mart greeter, school bus driver, roofer and cab driver.

Monteith’s TV credits included roles on the series “Kaya” and “Kyle XY” and guest appearances on “Smallville,” ”Supernatural,” ”Stargate,” ”Flash Gordon” and “Interns.” His film credits included “Final Destination 3,” ”The Invisible,” ”Deck the Halls” and “Whisper.”
