Crooner Tony Bennett: Today"s Music Is "Terrible"

If you think the music you’re hearing on the radio is terrible these days, take comfort in knowing that Tony Bennett – a 17-time Grammy-winning jazz singer – agrees.

“The songs that are written today, most of them are terrible,” Bennett told BBC Radio 4 on Thursday. “It’s a very bad period, musically, throughout the world for popular music.

It’s not necessarily the artists’ fault, though. Bennett, who is releasing an upcoming “big swing” jazz album with “musical Picasso” Lady Gaga, blames the money-hungry labels producing the crappy hits.

“They think the public is ignorant, so their attitude is, ‘Don’t give them anything intelligent, because it won’t sell,’” Bennett continued. “I grew up in an era where the record companies just sold records to everybody, and the whole family bought songs. Today, record companies are failing because they are putting their accent just on the young, and I think that’s rather silly. They’re missing out on thousands of people that would love to buy records but they don’t buy them because they don’t have a lasting quality.”

The 87-year-old crooner has been pumping out hits since 1951, starting with “Because of You.” Bennett doesn’t plan on stopping until his body does.

“I’ll call it a day when I die,” Bennett said. “It’s a wonderful occupation for me. I’ve never worked a day in my life.”

Female Masturbation Comes Into Its Own in Pop Music

St Vincent, Cyrus and Minaj don"t fight for the right to pleasure, they just do it and they do it themselves.

Annie Clark, aka St Vincent, surprised fans last December with a new single Birth in Reverse, which featured the line: “Oh what an ordinary day, take out the garbage, masturbate.” Shortly thereafter, a salacious video for Miley Cyrus"s Adore materialised, in which the singer runs a sly hand down her body to signify that she too will procure her own pleasure — a routine she"s also decided to play up on her current Bangerz tour. Not long after Adore appeared online, Nicki Minaj sneaked up on fans by releasinga remix of the song Boss Ass Bitch and from it sprung the words: “It"s a holiday, playing with my pussy day.” Most recently, on Valentine"s Day, Minaj said on her new single Lookin Ass N*gga that she has no use for unworthy men. In none of these instances is masturbation presented as titillating, prurient or provocative. It is normal and routine.

In a carnally confident style akin to Corin Tucker and Carrie Brownstein yowling through Sleater-Kinney"s Let"s Call It Love, or PJ Harvey lasciviously panting, “Lick my legs! I"m on fire!” on Rid of Me, female pleasure in popular music is making a libertine — albeit cooler-headed — return. When female rappers and R&B icons of the 90s and early 00s used this method (Tweet"s Oops Oh My, Janet Jackson"s Take Care and Lil" Kim"s Queen Bitch to name a smutty few), it was a powerful tool which pushed back on the idea that women needed men. But in 2014, the shock value of a woman masturbating — at least as a lyrical device — has at last begun to depreciate. It is no longer an act of flirty deviance to be monetised; it is merely normalised. Sure, Cyrus almost certainly knew the Adore You video would spark a prudish outcry, but it"s still the least flashy thing she"s done of late. Similar is the “DIY” T-shirt Rihanna sported last May, which showed a woman masturbating. With it Rihanna wore a long skirt and a toque. If the point was to be seen, it was also: “And so what?”

While female pleasure in music is nothing new, the shift that has appeared is largely based around an absence of the man: take for example Janet Jackson"s Take Care, where she sings: “I"ll lay here and take care of it "til you come home to me.” For Jackson, masturbation is a bookmark. The Divinyls" I Touch Myself — a pro-masturbation anthem if ever there was one — contains the line: “I"d get down on my knees, I"d do anything for you.” When it came out in 1990 it was intrepid. But the song is just as much about giving pleasure as getting it.

In a 2011 interview with CNN, Kathleen Hanna, feminist leader of Bikini Kill and now the Julie Ruin, questioned the purpose of Katy Perry"s sexual presentation on Perry"s 2008 debut single I Kissed a Girl. “The whole thing is like, "I kissed a girl so my boyfriend could masturbate about it later," said Hanna. “It"s disgusting. It"s exactly every male fantasy of fake lesbian porn.”

Considered alongside a line from the new essay collection by Sonic Youth"s Kim Gordon, “Is It My Body?” — “The body"s not theirs anymore,” she writes of rock stars. “It"s a public domain and public perception” — the discussion over whom a woman"s pleasure serves seems more relevant than ever. A handful of casual references in which pleasure is one"s own are slickly antithetical to any male musician — from Serge Gainsbourg to Skinny Puppy — who ever plunked the sound of a woman moaning into a song for the sake of masculine bravado.

Additionally, the dust finally settling on female masturbation makes room for some gloriously guileful subversion. On Backseat Freestyle, Angel Haze reverses the double standard by laughing pitifully at the male who goes home alone — “Just keep on masturbating,” she says. After that she avows, “Poppin" pussy"s irrelevant.” This is not dissimilar to Lil" Kim"s “a lot of napkins” dig in the opening track of her 1996 debut album Hard Core.

St Vincent, Cyrus and Minaj don"t fight for the right to pleasure, they just do it and they do it themselves. Until this point, most lyrics on the subject of female masturbation have undermined and corrected the illusion that pleasure can"t be DIY. Now the message is that pleasure still exists when pleasure is self-serving.

Mistrial declared in loud music murder trial

Jurors on Saturday found a white Florida man guilty of three counts of attempted murder and one other charge for the fatal shooting of a black teenager over loud music, but a mistrial was declared on the most-serious charge against the defendant — first-degree murder.

After deliberating for more than 30 hours over four days, the jury convicted Michael Dunn, 47, of three counts of attempted murder in the second degree and one count of firing a deadly missile into an occupied vehicle, but deadlocked on the first-degree murder charge, prompting the judge in the case to declare a mistrial on that charge.

Florida State Attorney Angela Corey indicated she would seek a retrial on that count.

Sentencing on the other charges was set for March 24. Dunn still faces at least 60 years in prison on the lesser counts. He could face a sentence of life in prison if he was convicted on the first-degree murder charge on retrial.

Dunn argued he was acting in self-defense when he shot at an SUV 10 times while parked next to four teens at a Jacksonville, Fla., gas station in November 2012 after an argument about loud rap music emanating from the vehicle. The shots killed Jordan Davis, 17, of Marietta, Ga.

Dunn showed no emotion as the verdicts were read. Davis’ parents left the courtroom in tears.

But Dunn’s attorney, Cory Strolla, said later that his client was stunned by the results.

“He basically said, ‘How is this happening?’“ he said. “It has not settled in.”

“It’s been a long, long road and we’re so very happy to have just a little bit of closure,” Davis’ mother, Lucy McBath, told reporters later.

“It’s sad for Mr. Dunn that he will live the rest of his life in that sense of torment. I will pray for him. I will ask my family to pray for him. But we are so grateful for the charges that have been brought against him, we are so grateful for the truth, we are so grateful that the jurors were able to understand the common sense of it all.”

On Dunn’s potentially lengthy sentence, Davis’ father, Ron Davis, said: “He’s going to learn that he must be remorseful for the killing of my son, that it was not just another day at the office.”

The case has been compared to that of George Zimmerman, the neighborhood watch volunteer who was acquitted of murder in the shooting death of unarmed black teen Trayvon Martin in Florida. Like the Zimmerman trial, the case has drawn international attention due to racial overtones and its connection to gun and self-defense laws.

Small memorials to Jordan Davis are planted outside the courthouse in Jacksonville, Fla., on Tuesday. The signs were quickly removed.

Judge Russell Healey sent the jurors back to continue deliberations earlier Saturday when they indicated a deadlock on the murder charge, saying he wanted them to return to the jury room and express the weakness of each of their arguments.

The sequestered jury of eight whites, two blacks, one Asian and one Hispanic also had asked the judge on if they could rule whether self-defense was applicable to any of the five counts individually.

Healey answered that “self-defense or justifiable use of deadly force applies separately for each count.”

“Each count has to, by law, be considered separately,” Healey said, adding that he realized, “It’s not easy to compartmentalize these things.”

NBC legal expert and former U.S. Attorney Kendall Coffey said the jury’s question showed they were divided about whether Dunn’s claim of self-defense justifies his shots at the other three teens. Some jurors might feel Dunn assumed Davis presented danger, but the other three individuals in the car did not, Coffey added.

Judge Russell Healey explains his answers to three related jury questions to defense attorney Cory Strolla, center, and defendant Michael Dunn, right, before bringing the jury into the courtroom on Saturday in Jacksonville, Fla.

Dunn, a software engineer who has a concealed weapons permit and no prior convictions, was waiting in his car while his fiancée was buying snacks inside the gas station convenience store when he got into a verbal fight with Davis and his friends over the volume of their music.

While testifying in his own defense on Tuesday, Dunn said that he started shooting because he felt threatened when he thought he saw the barrel of a gun emerge from the back window as Davis allegedly started getting out of the Dodge Durango.

Police said they didn’t find a weapon in the SUV the teens were in, and prosecutors said Davis — who had no police record — never exhibited a physical threat. Prosecutors also said forensic evidence proved that Davis never left the SUV.

Still, defense lawyer Cory Strolla argued Wednesday that Dunn “had every reason to stand his ground,” using language pointing to a controversial self-defense law allowing people to use deadly force in lieu of retreating if they feel endangered by another person.

But Assistant State Attorney Erin Wolfson said, “This defendant does not get to claim self-defense.”

“This defendant may have forever silenced Jordan Davis, but he cannot silence the truth,” Wolfson added.

Davis’ 19th birthday would have been Sunday.

NBC News’ Elizabeth Chuck and Reuters contributed to this report.

Rihanna Displays Illuminati Hand Gesture at Latest Music Award Performance

The Princess of Darkness Rihanna, performed “Diamonds” at the 2013 American Music Awards, displaying her love for the Illuminati.

(INTELLIHUB) — In a powerful and unique presentation of her hit song “Diamonds”, Rihanna, dressed in an all black gown, took to the stage at the 2013 American Music Awards last month raising a massive applause from the captivated audience.

However, in typical Roc fashion, Rihanna threw up the Illuminati sign, forming a pyramid with her two hands raised above her head in mid performance. While this is a rather typical gesture for the artist, it fuels the conspiracy controversy and is unsettling to some.

Rihanna’s manager and billionaire Jay-Z has also been known to rock the symbol as well.
