John Boehner"s ready to pop an orange aneurysm over states "cheating" to preserve food stamps

Speaker of the House John Boehner speaking at the Values Voter Summit in Washington, DC.
Careful there, John—don’t wanna burst a blood vessel

By now, you’re probably familiar with the brilliant move that at least half a dozen states have taken to preserve food stamp coverage, despite Republican attempts to cut the program under the recently passed farm bill. The new law requires that certain food stamp recipients receive at least $ 20 in home heating assistance per year in order to still qualify for food aid. Previously, as little as $ 1 a year in heating help was enough to make many people eligible for food stamps.

So a number of states, including New York, Pennsylvania, and Montana, had a very simple response: bump up everyone’s heating aid to $ 20 a year. That cost New York, for instance, just $ 6 million in state funds but allowed $ 457 million in federal benefits to keep flowing to 300,000 families. Conservatives, predictably, are outraged, and Republican House John Boehner looks like he’s about to pop an orange aneurysm:

“Since the passage of the farm bill, states have found ways to cheat, once again, on signing up people for food stamps. And so I would hope that the House would act to try to stop this cheating and this fraud from continuing.”

It’s a fascinating world we live in, where following the letter of the law is now considered “cheating” and “fraud” by Republicans (as long as you’re helping the disadvantaged, of course). And note that it’s not just Democrats who’ve increased heating assistance—Pennsylvania’s Republican governor has signed on as well.

Of course, Boehner is full of crap, because the law’s the law and it’s not getting changed any time soon. But there are nine other states that make use of the “heat and eat” program that haven’t yet followed suit, and Boehner may just be trying to intimidate them into inaction. There’s no reason for anyone to listen to him, though, because following the law is both perfectly legal and absolutely the right thing to do.

If you live in one of the nine remaining states where low-income Americans are still facing the threat of food stamp cuts—California, Delaware, Maine, Massachusetts, Michigan, New Jersey, Vermont, Washington, or Wisconsin—then click here to sign and send a petition directly to your governor, urging him to take the appropriate action to restore food stamp funding.

Walmart EBT Card Food Stamps Glitch Clears Stores" Shelves

Shoppers cleared the shelves at two Louisiana Walmart stores over the weekend when a glitch in the government’s Electronic Benefits Transfer (EBT) system allowed welfare recipients to use their debit-style food stamps cards to buy unlimited goods without the usual spending cap.

Managers at Walmart stores in Mansfield and Springhill, La., were forced to call police Saturday after people realized the glitch in the EBT system and rushed to load up carts with as many items as they could carry, CBS affiliate KSLA reported.

“It was worse than any black Friday,” Springhill Police Chief Will Lynd said of the frenzied shopping scene.

The glitch, which was reportedly caused during a routine maintenance test by EBT card servicer Xerox Corp., made it so cashiers could not view card limits, allowing customers the ability to spend limitlessly.

“We did make the decision to continue to accept EBT cards during the outage so that they could get food for their families,” Walmart representative Kayla Whaling told KSLA. She claimed that Walmart was “fully engaged and monitoring the situation and transactions during the outage.”

The system began working properly around 9 p.m. Saturday, leading people to abandon their overflowing shopping carts in the aisles.

When the system got back online, one woman had just rung up a $ 700 bill at the register and was turned away because she only had a balance of $ 0.49 on her card, Lynd said.

The same EBT card glitch caused just the opposite problem for shoppers in 17 other states over the weekend when their cards wouldn’t go through, according to USA Today.

U.S. Department of Agriculture spokeswoman Courtney Rowe emphasized that the outage was not related to the federal government shutdown.

Gohmert: Not "Evil" To Cut Food Stamps Because Poor People Buy King Crab Legs

REP. LOUIE GOHMERT (R-TX): “When I look into the eyes of constituents, who want to provide for their children … and they talk about standing in line, I’ve heard this story so many times … standing in line at a grocery store behind people with a food-stamp car—one individual said, I love crab legs. You know, the big king crab legs. I love those. But we haven’t been able to have those in who knows when. But I’m standing behind a guy who has those in his basket, and I’m looking longingly like, when can I ever make enough again where our family can have something like that, and sees the food-stamp card pulled out, and provided, he looks at the king crab legs and looks at the ground meat, and realizes because he does pay income tax, he doesn’t get more back than he pays in, he is actually helping pay for the king crab legs when he can’t pay for them for himself.”
