A new Bitcoin alternative – a math-based digital currency with which users can send and receive over the internet – is aiming to add real world value to the digital currency market by backing their digital coin with real gold and silver held in vaults around the world.

NoFiatCoin is hoping that their novel idea of backing the coin with valuable real world commodities can help to address some of the key concerns with digital currency and provide a more appealing alternative for those who see the potential for digital currency to transform our financial services industry, but are wary putting their money into a currency with no intrinsic value.

Digital currencies certainly have a huge potential. Not only are they a convenient way to pay for things online, but they can also enable peer to peer financial transactions of other kinds – like sending money to a friend or relative abroad. The remittance industry which currently handles such transactions is a huge business, and new services based on peer to peer digital currency transactions could easily undercut the currently high prices. Currency exchange, forex trading, and even the trading of other assets could also be affected by the ‘digital currency revolution’. This is exactly what the Ripple Network, within which the NoFiatCoin launched in early January 2014, is hoping to facilitate. Ripple offers a way for anyone to trade in and exchange a range of currencies and commodities through the medium of their own digital currency XRP.

By backing their new ‘alt coin’ – as alternatives to Bitcoin (the first digital currency) have become known – with real gold and silver NoFiatCoin are placing a real world value on one of these digital assets for the first time. The coins, which use the currency code XNF, can be redeemed for gold or silver at any time, from vaults across the world. If you are lucky enough to have gold or silver stored at home, you can also send it in to your local vault in exchange for XNF. This real world backing could add a new level of security and stability which is missing in other digital currencies.

NoFiatCoin also follows the model of Ripple’s in house currency XRP, avoiding the problem of currency becoming concentrated in the hands of a small group of ‘miners’ by distributing the currency themselves and using the funds to stock the vaults with gold and silver. Bitcoin, and most of the new alternatives which have popped up since it started to be successful, perform the initial distribution of currency by handing it out to people whose computers are first to solve a difficult problem. This means that wealth is concentrated in the hands of people who own the powerful specialist computers which can perform these calculations; running one of these computers is called ‘mining’. Although the ‘pre-mined’ method used by Ripple and NoFiatCoin has generated a great deal of controversy and opposition from these (now very wealthy) miners, it does at least put everyone on the same level from day one.

The value of NoFiatCoins has already gone up more than 50% in a week, suggesting a significant amount of early interest. If the idea catches on, however, this could pale in comparison to future gains.

Gohmert: Republicans Must Unite, Reshape Better Healthcare Alternative

U.S. Rep. Louie Gohmert called on his fellow Republicans to eschew political fallout and come together to reshape the existing Obama healthcare law, noting that they must show leadership and unite to alleviate “suffering” for the American people.

“Obamacare is causing the suffering and we have got to keep pushing on this because this isn’t about politics. If people are trying to make it about politics, it’s going to hurt them in the end. It’s about helping alleviate the suffering that Obamacare is and will cause,” Gohmert, a Texas Republican, told Newsmax at the annual Restoration Weekend event in Palm Beach, Fla., a day after the House voted on a fix to the divisive health plan with 39 Democrats breaking ranks in support.

Gohmert urged Republicans to be firm as the healthcare law continues to unravel and Democrat fears over 2014 midterm elections mount. He believes they have the power to reshape something better if they are thoughtful.

“What I keep wanting people to understand in our party is when you stand up for what’s right instead of arguing about what’s politically best, if you just stand up for what’s right, in the end, it may hurt you here or there, but, in the end, it ends up being the best thing politically,” he said. “And not getting cute and trying to twist this, just stand up for what we believe in, show the people what our plan is… Let’s come together. Let’s have these discussions.”

Despite the unification message, Gohmert mixed no words when defining the Obama administration’s plan to force healthcare into a single-payer system. He said he read the Obamacare bill completely and said it amounted to a plan that would eventually bankrupt insurers by forcing them to provide a large set of coverage, keep premiums low and then have the government eventually rush in to rescue a system it set up to fail as it called out doctors and providers as “greedy.”

He acknowledged that the House resolution is unlikely to pass the Democrat-controlled Senate or a certain presidential veto, but said it sends a crucial message to the insurance industry because it changes the way Obamacare moved ahead.

“Obamacare says the insurance companies are going to get hammered if they don’t provide the policies exactly like they were supposed to. Our bill says if you got a policy in place before Obamacare now, it’s OK. Keep it going for another year,” Gohmert said. “So it would allow insurance companies to do that.”

Gohmert said he and some House colleagues are working on an alternative interim plan that would not allow a bridge for consumers to keep their policies, at least for a year, removed from sweeping government control, noting “we do have alternatives. We can make this work to get back to sanity.”

He explained their rationale: “What some of us want to see is an interim, only a bridge, not a permanent solution, but every state has insurance policies that are approved for the state workers, the federal government has policies that were approved for people that worked for the federal government in the different states that are OK in those states. (This is) just a one-year bridge to get us through this tough time when people have lost their insurance and can’t afford what’s there,” he said.

“Let them buy from the private insurance companies that are approved by the federal government or the state government or the local government. Let them buy those policies for the next year and not those governed by the federal government, not controlled by the OPM in Washington but just controlled by the states.”

Gohmert called on lawmakers to reshape a stronger dialogue with the public over what is good and bad within the framework of a federal healthcare law, much like the debates that occurred in 2008 as Obama began discussion on such a plan. By walking it back, listening to feedback, holding thoughtful hearings and not rushing it through, better alternatives are likely to emerge, he said.

“What appealed to the American public in 2008 was the United States president now, candidate then, saying I am going to have debates, we’ll even have them on C-SPAN, we will discuss this, and we will get all of this information and we’ll pull together a bill. That’s what should be done. Our leadership is not ready to have that open debate. It’s time not to just say here’s the bill; we’re going to ram ours through like the Democrats. No, but let’s have the open debate,” he said.

“It’s time to move forward with our plan but let’s don’t ram one down,” Gohmert cautioned of Republicans in shaping a better law. He noted that Congress is full of medical expertise.

“Let’s let Mike Burgess, Louie Gohmert, Tom Price, Phil Roe, all of these doctors, John Fleming, let all of these doctors that have good ideas, let’s get all of this input.”

Three California Programmers Create Alternative Healthcare Website

CBS Evening News reports S.F. programmers build alternative to HealthCare.Gov Website

On Friday, President Obama had this to say about problems with the Obamcare website during a speech in New Orleans: “I promise you, nobody’s been more frustrated. I wanted to go in and fix it myself, but I don’t write code.”

But plenty of programmers do write code. And three of them have created their own website that addresses some of the most annoying problems with HealthCare.gov.

In a San Francisco office shared with other tech start-ups, three 20-year-olds saw HealthCare.gov as a challenge.

“They got it completely backwards in terms of what people want up front,” said Liang. He added: “They want prices and benefits, so that they could make the decision.”

Liang showed CBS News how it worked. “You come to our website and you put in your zip code — in this case a California zip code. You hit ‘find plans,’ and you immediately see the exchange plans that are available for that zip code.”

Not Quite Ready

I entered my zipcode, 60012,  and requested all plans for me alone – over 50, and no plans came up. I tried again with “you and spouse” and again no plans came up. Either they do not have all zipcodes entered or there are some other issues.

In my post Tips on Navigating Obamacare Costs on HealthCare.Gov – My Personal Experience – Obamashock! I noted there were 60 plans for McHenry County.

Perhaps they need to add “county” for some states.

Regardless, the website has a better interface and with a few bugs fixed, no one will need Healthcare.Gov, a website that cost taxpayers something on the order of $ 300 million.

I emailed the website developers and will post an update when I hear back. 

As is typical with government projects, it seems no one really knows for sure what the healthcare.gov costs.

China may step up push for alternative currency…

The fall of the US dollar as the world’s reserve currency is rapidly approaching. It heralds a financial collapse that will rock our nation. Obama has all but ensured that this will occur in the near future. He planned for it and it is what he wants. America will fall to her knees and no longer lead the world. The world’s shining light will succumb to the darkness brought forth by Marxists, communists and radical Islamists with Russia and China leading the foray. There is plenty of blame to go around on both sides of the aisle.

The damage is done and a door has been opened for China to ascend economically and militarily. They sense our weakness and the rift within American politics and the communists intend to take full advantage. From Yahoo! News:

“We’re glad a deal has been struck,” said a Japanese policymaker, who spoke on condition of anonymity. “But the uncertainty will remain and it will be the same thing all over again early next year.”

He and other Japanese officials say they have already developed contingency plans that include flooding Japan’s banking system with cash to keep markets functioning however panicked investors become. And analysts say China, whose Communist leaders are due to hold a key policy meeting next month, may step up a push for global acceptance of its currency, the yuan or renminbi, as an alternative to the U.S. dollar in international trade.

“They might actually consider accelerating the process,” said Vincent Chan, head of equity research at Credit Suisse in Hong Kong. “You strengthen the case of making the renminbi a genuine international currency, because the Americans are unreliable.”

As China moves forward to de-Americanize the world, their tactical skills at warfare on and off the global chessboard are becoming very clear. By gutting our military and destroying our economy, the Progressives are following an agenda that solidifies their wealth and power and gives a long-promised gift to the communists – global dominance and subservience from America. For years we have willingly and knowingly let their spies infest our government agencies and we have handed over technology and military secrets as a father tenders the dowry of a promised bride-to-be.

From our friends at The Economic Collapse blog comes nine alarming signs that China is making their move:

#1 Chinese credit rating agency Dagong has downgraded U.S. debt from A to A- and has indicated that further downgrades are possible.

#2 China has just entered into a very large currency swap agreement with the eurozone that is considered a huge step toward establishing the yuan as a major world currency. This agreement will result in a lot less U.S. dollars being used in trade between China and Europe…

The swap deal will allow more trade and investment between the regions to be conducted in euros and yuan, without having to convert into another currency such as the U.S. dollar first, said Kathleen Brooks, a research director at FOREX.com.

“It’s a way of promoting European and Chinese trade, but not doing it with the U.S. dollar,” said Brooks. “It’s a bit like cutting out the middleman, all of a sudden there’s potentially no U.S. dollar risk.”

#3 Back in June, China signed a major currency swap agreement with the United Kingdom. This was another very important step toward internationalizing the yuan.

#4 China currently owns about 1.3 trillion dollars of U.S. debt, and this enormous exposure to U.S. debt is starting to become a major political issue within China.

#5 Mei Xinyu, Commerce Minister adviser to the Chinese government, warned this week that if the U.S. government ever does default that China may decide to completely stop buying U.S. Treasury bonds.

#6 According to Yahoo News, China has already been looking for ways to diversify away from the U.S. dollar…

There have been media reports this week that China’s State Administration of Foreign Exchange, the body that handles the country’s $ 3.66 trillion of foreign exchange reserve, is looking to diversify into real estate investments in Europe.

#7 Xinhua, the official news agency of China, called for a “de-Americanized world” this week, and also made the following statement about the political turmoil in Washington: “The cyclical stagnation in Washington for a viable bipartisan solution over a federal budget and an approval for raising debt ceiling has again left many nations’ tremendous dollar assets in jeopardy and the international community highly agonized.”

#8 Xinhua also said the following about the U.S. debt deal on Thursday: “[P]oliticians in Washington have done nothing substantial but postponing once again the final bankruptcy of global confidence in the U.S. financial system”. The commentary in the government-run publication also declared that the debt deal “was no more than prolonging the fuse of the U.S. debt bomb one inch longer.”

#9 China is the largest producer of gold in the world, and it has also been importing an absolutely massive amount of gold from other nations. But instead of slowing down, the Chinese appear to be accelerating their gold buying. In fact, money manager Stephen Leeb says that his sources are telling him that China plans to buy another 5,000 tons of gold. There are many that are convinced that China eventually plans to back the yuan with gold and try to make it the number one alternative to the U.S. dollar.

So exactly what would happen if the Chinese announced someday that they were going to back their currency with gold and would no longer be using the U.S. dollar in international trade?

It would change the face of the global economy almost overnight. In a previous article, I described some of the things that we could expect to see happen…

If China does decide to back the yuan with gold and no longer use the U.S. dollar in international trade, it will have devastating effects on the U.S. economy. Demand for the U.S. dollar and U.S. debt would drop like a rock, and prices on the things that we buy every day would soar. At that point you could forget about cheap gasoline or cheap Chinese imports. Our entire way of life depends on the U.S. dollar being the primary reserve currency of the world and being able to import things very inexpensively. If the rest of the world (led by China) starts to reject the U.S. dollar, it would result in a massive tsunami of currency coming back to our shores and a very painful adjustment in our standard of living. Today, most U.S. currency is actually used outside of the United States. If someday that changes and we are no longer able to export our inflation that is going to mean big trouble for us.

Our printing presses are spitting out dollars faster and faster as if there is no end, ever. Oh, but there is. And when the cataclysm comes and the economy crashes into a depression that will make the last ones look like a birthday party, the Progressives will blame the Republicans, but there will be tar and feathers for everyone on both sides of the Progressive aisle at the final party. We will no longer be the world’s bank. China’s move is just the opening salvo to economic Armageddon. If you listen closely, you can hear hooves approaching.

The Best Critique of Alternative Medicine Ever

There’s nothing like reading about the history of disease to make you appreciate modern times. Until just a century or two ago, most people died horribly of contagious diseases we barely remember the names of today. Our world is full of life-saving luxuries: We turn on a tap and clean water comes out. Our diets are so rich and varied that almost nobody suffers from rickets or scurvy. We live in airy, spacious homes that aren’t clouded with the coughs of consumptives—and when we share a bed with someone, it’s due to desire rather than overcrowding.

It is in the nature of luxuries to eventually be taken for granted, and some of the greatest underappreciated luxuries are public health and modern medicine. Thanks to massive vaccination drives, almost no children in the developed world die of measles or mumps. And because these diseases are now so rare, anti-vaccination activists have the luxury of indulging in conspiracy theories. Many of us would have died already if it weren’t for routine medical interventions; we are on our second or third lives. And because death is so much more distant than in the past, some people have a romanticized notion of our place in the natural world. We used to be more in harmony with nature, the thinking goes, and our bodies naturally know how to heal themselves. I have a hard time following the logic—something about auras and herbs and energy fields? It’s utter nonsense, of course—what’s natural is to serve as a host and vector for deadly parasitic microbes.

Tim Minchin, an Australian singer, songwriter, poet, comedian, and all-around genius, has the best response I’ve ever seen to people who prefer alternative medicine to modern medicine. His “Storm” is funny, educational, and cathartic. If you’ve been buttonholed by someone who wants to tell you all about an “alternative,” “natural,” “superior” health care regimen, this film is for you.

AP Sources: Senators craft Syria alternative

WASHINGTON (AP) — Senior congressional aides say a bipartisan group of senators is working on an alternative measure to a resolution authorizing U.S. military force against Syria.

The group met late Monday on a plan that would call on the U.N. Security Council to state that Syria has chemical weapons and require a U.N. team to remove them within a specific time period, possibly 60 days. If this cannot be done, then President Barack Obama would have the authority to launch military strikes.

The senators working on the proposal are Republicans John McCain, Kelly Ayotte, Lindsey Graham and Saxby Chambliss along with Democrats Chris Coons, Bob Casey, Chuck Schumer, Carl Levin and Bob Menendez.

The aides spoke on condition of anonymity because they weren’t authorized to publicly discuss the plan.
