Saudi Arabia, the brutal authoritarian theocracy that the democracy-promoting Washington claims as one of its closest allies, has a bit of a history of pressuring the U.S. into Middle East wars. The 1991 First Gulf War to oust Saddam Hussein from Kuwait was fought largely in defense of Saudi Arabia. The Kingdom also encouraged the Bush administration to invade Iraq in 2003. And the Saudi king has repeatedly urged Washington to attack Iran to secure Saudi interests in the Sunni-Shia regional divide.

Saudi Arabia also has a rather incriminating and duplicitous history of harboring Islamic extremists of the al-Qaeda, jihadist type. They helped the U.S. fund the mujahideen in Afghanistan. Most of the 9/11 hijackers were Saudis (and they were directed by a Saudi, named Osama bin Laden). There is even a classified record that members of Congress have claimed indicates the Saudi government’s role in the 9/11 attacks.

Since the start of Syria’s civil war, foreign jihadists have been flooding the country – many of them coming from Saudi Arabia. Al Monitor reports:

Estimates of the number of Saudis fighting in Syria range as high as 2,500. Some are hardened veterans of earlier jihads in Afghanistan, Bosnia and Iraq. A few are compatriots of Osama bin Laden. Others traveled to Syria from the kingdom, despite individual travel bans imposed for dissident activities at home. Some traveled directly through major Saudi airports, leading many observers to conclude they were encouraged by the authorities to leave the kingdom and go fight Assad. For over two years, the Saudi government seemed to turn a blind eye to travel by its citizens — even political dissidents — to Syria.

Kuwait, which has close ties to the Saudi government, “is a major source of private funding for Jabhat al-Nusra, al-Qaeda’s official arm in Syria,” Al Monitor reports.

Interesting enough, but that is not the big piece of news from this Al Monitor report. The big news is this: “King Abdullah will make a major push for a more vigorous American effort to oust Assad when he hosts Obama [late next month]. The Saudis have been openly disappointed that Obama has not used force to get rid of Assad or provided more assistance to training and arming the Syrian opposition.” Now, the report says, the Saudis are trying to persuade Obama to impose regime change in Syria by promising to cut back on its support for jihadists.

To sum up, Saudi Arabia’s policy on Syria amounts to funding groups considered by Washington to be terrorists and to lobbying the President of the United States to destroy the Damascus government. The two initiatives are deeply intertwined given that a collapse of the regime in Syria would mean chaos and huge ungoverned spaces, which foreign funded jihadists could thrive in.

I’ve been hammering away on the issue of entangling alliance for months now, but where is the outrage on Saudi Arabia? The U.S. government continues to help prop up and arm the Saudi government and yet it supports terrorism and is trying to suck the U.S. into another dangerous and endless military quagmire in the Middle East. Where are the belligerent members of Congress, the Peter Kings and Charles Schumers, condemning Saudi Arabia? They condemn other countries for much less.

(CNN) — U.N. mediator Lakhdar Brahimi said Saturday that a second round of talks in Geneva, Switzerland, aimed at ending the crisis in Syria had come to an end with little progress made.

The opposition and the government have agreed to an agenda for a third round of talks but they have not agreed on how to tackle it, he said.

Brahimi apologized to the Syrian people, saying he was “very, very sorry” that despite two rounds of talks ” we haven’t done very much.”

The key sticking point is that the Syrian government wants to talk about tackling terrorism, while the opposition wants to discuss forming a transitional governing body.

Brahimi said he had suggested starting the next round of talks with one day of discussion on each issue — but that the government had thrown a wrench in the works.

“Unfortunately the government has refused, which raises the suspicion of the opposition that in fact the government doesn’t want to discuss the (transitional governing body) at all,” he said.

Brahimi said such intransigence was “not good for the process,” or for Syria.

Negotiators from both sides should go back to their leaders and reflect on a way forward, he said. “Do they want this process to take place or not?” he said.

The snail-paced peace talks, which started last month with Brahimi serving as an intermediary between the two delegations sitting in the same room, have failed to produce an agreement on a first step for resolving a conflict that has dragged on for nearly three years.

It has killed well over 100,000 people and caused millions to flee their homes.

The UN mediator Lakhdar Brahimi: “It’s not good for Syria that we come back for another round and fall in the same traps”

The UN mediator Lakhdar Brahimi has apologised to the Syrian people after peace talks in Geneva ended without making progress.

He had held final discussions with both sides in Geneva in a last-ditch bid to break the stalemate between the Syrian government and opposition.

Mr Brahimi said a key sticking point was the government’s refusal to talk about a transitional governing body.

No date has been set for a third round of talks.

The UK and France have blamed President Assad’s government for the failure of the talks.

The conflict in Syria has claimed more than 100,000 lives since March 2011.

Some 9.5 million people have been forced to flee their homes.

Analysis

Lakhdar Brahimi is a man of patience and pragmatism. But after final face-to-face talks that lasted just 27 minutes, he emerged looking tired and dejected.

The hope had been that he could persuade the two sides to agree a date for a third round, but it was not to be.

A measure of Mr Brahimi’s frustration could be heard when he described the government and opposition fixation on their “pet subjects”.

The opposition has always insisted that a transitional government should be discussed, the regime wants to talk about violence and terrorism.

Arguing about these two things has prevented them talking about anything else: about any small confidence-building measure that might bring some relief to the people of Syria.

Mr Brahimi suggested the regime’s unwillingness to talk about transition was a particular obstacle, and instead of announcing progress, he found himself apologising to the Syrian people.

Suspicions raised

The discussions on Saturday morning lasted just 27 minutes, after which Mr Brahimi emerged looking tired to address reporters, the BBC’s Imogen Foulkes reports from Geneva.

Mr Brahimi apologised to the Syrian people, admitting that the talks “had not come out with very much”.

Although the two sides had agreed on an agenda for the next – third – round, Mr Brahimi said the government had rejected his suggestion to begin it by spending a day focusing on combating violence and terrorism, and a second day discussing a transitional government.

Mr Brahimi said the government’s stance “raises the suspicion of the opposition that the government doesn’t want to discuss [a transitional government] at all”.

He said he hoped that when the government spoke of implementing the 2012 Geneva Communique on bringing about a political settlement “they do mean a transitional governing body, exercising full executive power, will be the main objective”.

But the government’s chief negotiator, Bashar al-Jaafari, stressed that “terrorism” – rebel violence – must be dealt with fully first.

“Once you have an agenda you should respect the agenda fully without any interpretation or misinterpretation… we said that we cannot move from… item one to item two or item three or item four without fully considering this item and concluding by a common vision of this item by the two sides, something that the other side objected to.”

Opposition spokesman Louay Safi again insisted on discussion of a transitional government that does not include President Bashar al-Assad – something the government rejects.

“A third round without talking about transition would be a waste of time,” Mr Safi said.

Mr Brahimi said both sides needed “to go back to their base” for consultations and to think about whether they wanted the process to continue or not.

In further reaction to the breakdown of the talks, UK Foreign Secretary William Hague laid the blame squarely at the door of the Syrian government but said the Geneva process must continue.

“This cannot be the end of the road. With the war in Syria causing more death and destruction every day, we owe it to the people of Syria to do all we can to make progress towards a political solution.”

Mr Hague said Britain would also continue to push for a UN Security Council resolution to address the “appalling humanitarian suffering in Syria”.

French Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius said the Syrian regime had “blocked any progress on establishing a transition government and stepped up violence and acts of terror against the civilian population.”

Applying pressure

So far, the only agreement in the latest negotiations was to allow civilians to leave the besieged city of Homs and aid to enter.

Correspondents say at least 5,000 people are believed to have died since the first round of the Geneva talks began on 22 January.

US President Barack Obama said on Friday that he was considering ways of putting more pressure on President Assad, though he did not expect any resolution in the short term.

Speaking in California, where he was meeting Jordan’s King Abdullah, he said: “There will be some intermediate steps that we can take applying more pressure to the Assad regime and we are going to be continuing to work with all the parties concerned to try to move forward on a diplomatic solution.”

Mr Obama did not disclose what steps he has under consideration.

Syria peace talks in Geneva break off, no new date set

A second round of peace talks between Syria‘s warring sides broke off Saturday without making any progress and without a date being set for a third round, United Nations mediator Lakhdar Brahimi said.

“I think it is better that every side goes back and reflects on their responsibility, [and on whether] they want this process to continue or not,” Lakhdar Brahimi told reporters in Geneva, according to the Agence France-Presse.

The Syrian government, meanwhile, accused Israel and the United States of undermining the talks and blamed the opposition’s refusal to settle the issue of “terrorism” for the deadlock.

The Algerian-born diplomat said an agreement to evacuate people from the besieged city of Homs had raised hopes that weren’t satisfied at the Geneva talks involving opposition groups and representatives of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.

The head of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) also stressed the meager results so far, saying the Homs evacuation did not herald any wider improvement in humanitarian access to Syria’s civil war zones, where the United Nations says it cannot reach up to 3 million people in need.

“I am very very sorry and I apologize to the Syrian people that their hopes which were very very high here, that something will happen here,” Brahimi told journalists after the talks, according to Reuters.

“I think that the little that has been achieved in Homs gave them even more hope that maybe this is the beginning of coming out of this horrible crisis they are in.”

Death toll at 140,000, opposition says

The pro-opposition Syrian Observatory for Human Rights says the 3-year-old conflict has killed more than 140,000 people — more than 7,000 of them children.

The London-based Observatory added the period since the “Geneva 2″ peace talks for Syria began last month had been the bloodiest of the conflict.

The rebels come mainly from Syria’s majority Sunni Muslims and have been joined by radical Sunni groups such as Al Qaeda and other foreign militants.

Shia Muslim Iran and the powerful Lebanese Shia movement Hezbollah have thrown their weight behind Assad, who is from Syria’s minority Alawite sect, an offshoot of Shia Islam, and whose family has dominated Syria for 44 years.

Thousands of people fled a rebel-held western Syrian town, Yabroud, on Friday after it was bombed and shelled in an operation that has stirred fears of a major assault by ground troops, the UN said.

Al-Manar television, run by Lebanon‘s Hezbollah, said the Syrian army had advanced in the Yabroud area, seizing control of the town’s main road and a nearby border crossing that it said was used for smuggling

Agenda for next talks, whenever they are

Brahimi said the points to be discussed at the next Geneva round include violence and terrorism, a transitional governing body, national institutions and national reconciliation.

However, he added, the Syrian government wants to first deal with the issue of combating terrorism — the word it uses to described armed opposition to Assad’s rule — and has refused to deal with any other points until that’s resolved.

US President Barack Obama said on Friday he was considering new ways to pressure Assad but did not expect the conflict to be resolved any time soon.

However, Obama told reporters in California that “there are going to be some immediate steps that we have to take to help the humanitarian assistance there.”

US President Barack Obama said he is mulling steps to put pressure on Syrian President Bashar Assad to kickstart the stalled Geneva peace conference. But Russia’s FM Sergey Lavrov says every attempt is being made to derail the peace process.

Obama’s comments were delivered while meeting with Jordan’s King Abdullah in California on Friday to discuss a range of issues, including the current Syrian stalemate.

The US president said he does not expect the conflict to be resolved in the immediate future, though “immediate steps” will be taken to “help the humanitarian assistance there.”

“There will be some intermediate steps that we can take applying more pressure to the Assad regime and we are going to be continuing to work with all the parties concerned to try to move forward on a diplomatic solution,” Reuters cited Obama as saying.

Obama did not specify what steps he would consider, but US Secretary of State John Kerry told reporters on Friday that Obama had asked “all of us to think about various options that may or may not exist.”

Having pledged $ 1 billion in loans to help stabilize Jordan’s economy, the US believes that the country, which already currently has more than 600,000 Syrian war refugees, has a part to play in resolving the Syrian conflict.

“We have been ramping up our support to the moderate opposition and Jordan has its own strong role to play in relationship to the moderate opposition,” a senior Obama administration official told the agency following two hours of talks at the Sunnylands retreat.

Frustrated by what he views as Assad’s intransigence regarding a transition of power in the country, Obama has made it a clear a more assertive policy could be in the works.

Senior administration officials who briefed reporters about Obama’s talks with King Abdullah reiterated previous claims that all options remain on the table, short of putting boots on the ground.

One option is arming the Syrian rebels, something that Washington’s Gulf allies have been actively doing, though one official said such a move would only be enacted to help push the process toward a political solution.

According to one report last month, the US Congress has already authorized sending small arms, an assorted variety of rockets, and financial backing to moderate rebel forces.

American and European security officials told Reuters that the US will provide anti-tank rockets, but nothing as deadly as shoulder-launched surface-to-air missiles (known as MANPADs), which can be used to bring down military or civilian aircraft.

The US has long opposed arming rebels with anti-aircraft missiles, fearing they could fall into the hands of extremists who would then use them against the West or commercial airlines. A senior Obama administration official told the Wall Street Journal on Friday that the US objection remains the same. “There hasn’t been a change internally on our view,” the official said.

Meanwhile, Saudi Arabia on Friday decided to start providing the opposition with Chinese Manpads and antitank guided missiles from Russia, WSJ reports, citing Western and Arab diplomats and opposition figures.

Although significant military hardware remains off the table for now, the US for its part has increased its financial support to the opposition, handing over millions of dollars to help pay rebel fighters, said rebel commanders who received some of the money. Washington would not comment on the payments.

On Friday, FM Lavrov said it was his impression that “systematic attempts” were being made to find any excuse to derail a political settlement in Syria.

“First, a political settlement was almost derailed over speculation regarding chemical weapons. Now that that problem is solved, I hope that everything will be done, just as the Syrian leadership has pledged,” Lavrov told a press conference following talks with his German counterpart, Frank-Walter Steinmeier.

‘When the chemical [weapons] issue is not being speculated over, then attempts are made to politicize the issue of the humanitarian crisis,” he said.

Lavrov said that when Russia and the US took the initiative to push ahead with the Geneva 2 peace conference, it was perfectly clear that there should be complete implementation of the June 2012 Geneva Communique, which, among other points, calls for a transitional governing body that could include members of the current government and the opposition.

But in pushing the Syrian opposition to participate in the Geneva 2 conference, there is now the impression that Western powers only did so for the sake of initiating regime change, he said.

“Certainly, we grow alarmed whenever the presidents of the United States and France once again say at a joint press conferences that the affair may go beyond negotiations,” Lavrov said.

Chilling video out of Syria shows a woman being strangled to death by jihadist rebels, another shocking reminder that the west is on the same side as bloodthirsty extremists, while a separate rebel group that the CFR urged the United States to become allies with has slaughtered an entire village.

The incident, which happened in Manbij, Aleppo, shows a militant strangling a defenseless woman with some kind of tool as she slowly chokes to death.

The supposed “crime” committed by the woman to deserve this summary execution is not known, but previous videos have shown rebels dishing out torture for minor infractions as well as mass executions targeting anyone who resists their occupation.

Yesterday it was reported that an entire village of minority Alawites in central Syria had been slaughtered by rebels. Half of the victims were civilians including women. The rebels were not fighting against Bashar Al-Assad’s troops, but against desperate villagers attempting to protect their homes.

Video footage from the town of Maan shows rebels tearing down a Syrian flag and replacing it with an Al-Qaeda flag as they brag about taking over the area.

“A video uploaded by the rebels of the Jund al-Aqsa Brigade, which said it overran the village, showed them waving a black jihadi flag over the village rooftops as bearded, grinning men looted homes. The video corresponded with The Associated Press’ reporting of the event,” reports AP.

When the Syrian delegation in Geneva invited FSA representatives to condemn the massacre, the offer was rejected by the opposition who called the victims “Shabiha”.

The group responsible for this massacre, Ahrar al-Sham, is the same militant outfit that the Council on Foreign Relations recently called on the United States to “befriend,” despite the fact that it openly swore allegiance to Al-Qaeda front man Ayman al-Zawahiri and is led by a man who helped plan the 9/11 attacks.

In another development, Rana Kabbani, a prominent FSA rebel supporter and a journalist whose articles have appeared in the Guardian, recently tweeted about her desire to see President Bashar Al-Assad’s wife and children starved and raped.
