Third Way puts words in my mouth to defend Zell Miller

U.S. President George W. Bush shakes hands with Democratic U.S. Senator Zell Miller, who offered his support to Bush at a fundraising reception, at the Georgia World Congress Center in Atlanta, January 15, 2004. REUTERS/Larry Downing
Third Way leaps to the defense of Zell Miller.

So Third Way took a shot at me today, using Politico as their vehicle, because I guess having no constituency is no barrier to access if you have enough hedge fund managers on your board.

Politico has given me space to respond, so I’ll save my substantive rebuttal for that venue. But I do want to make a couple of quick points. First of all, it’s easy to see why it’s happening.

It happened because Third Way co-founder Jonathan Cowan was once an aide to Andrew Cuomo, who is the second coming of Joe Lieberman. I’ve been beating up on Cuomo lately, so Third Way is leaping to his defense by attacking me. Fair enough.

It happened because Third Way’s efforts to kill Social Security didn’t just run up into a buzzsaw at Daily Kos, but our activism convinced Democrats to run far, far away from what they urged. They even lost a co-chair in the process. Fair enough.

It happened because of this. Fair enough.

But what’s truly funny about their attacks on me is that they have to invent words in my mouth to make a coherent argument. I’ve written over 10 million words the past decade, and yet we get passages like this:

A charge implicit in the Moulitsas post is that moderate Democrats lack political courage—that they would do the right thing if only they were brave enough. This just doesn’t withstand scrutiny.

You rarely see that blatant an example of a strawman argument. It’s actually a thing of beauty. “He didn’t say this thing, but let’s pretend that he did, and OMG that pretend argument that we invented out of thin air fails scrutiny!”

Note that bullshit arguments are part and parcel of Third Way’s repertoire. As they were attacking Social Security, they completely invented a Colorado ballot initiative that wasn’t (claiming it raised taxes on just the rich, when it raised taxes on everyone). So it’s not as if honesty comes naturally to that crowd. But for now, I’ll make one more observation. This appears to be the nut of their argument:

Of the 10 former Democratic senators that Moulitsas identifies, seven were replaced by Republicans, one by Montanan John Walsh, who is in a fight for his political life this year, and another by Democrat Joe Donnelly of Indiana, who is unlikely to make the DailyKos Pantheon of Progressiveness.

Donnelly didn’t replace Evan Bayh. He replaced Dick Lugar. But that simple fact check isn’t the point I want to make. The point is this:

Who cares if seven of the 10 were replaced with Republicans? Ten years ago, Democrats had 49 members in the Senate. Today they have 53 plus Bernie Sanders and Angus King. And even if they lose the Senate this year, which they won’t, it won’t be much more than a rental as 2016 is a stellar map for us (up to 10 potential pickups).

So is it better to have Ben Nelson, Joe Lieberman and Zell Miller in a 49-seat minority, or is it better to replace them with better Democrats in a 55-seat Democratic majority? Only morons would argue for the former, but apparently, that’s what Third Way wants to be.

Pentagon Financed CNN AKA CIA Defend NSA

By Bruce

Don Lemon‘s test-show last night, when conservative activist Larry Klayman got into a legal fracas with Lemon and the network’s legal analystJeffrey Toobin. In theory, they were discussing Klayman’s win this week in a lawsuit challenging NSA surveillance. By the time it wrapped, Lemon had his producer cut off Klayman’s microphone and get him off the screen, Klayman compared Lemon toMSNBC‘s recently “resigned” Martin Bashir, and Toobin called Klayman a “lunatic.”

Klayman is known for, among other things, having claimed President Obama is a closet Muslim who may have been born in Kenya. He’s also the plaintiff in a lawsuit decided Monday that’s the first major ruling from a federal judge about NSA’s surveillance program – likely unconstitutional, according to U.S. District Court Judge Richard Leon. On Tuesday night, Lemon introduced Klayman to viewers with a bio that included a quote from a former George W. Bush staffer who’d said Klayman’s suits tended to be about “himself and his own… delusions of grandeur.”

Klayman, not surprisingly, came out swinging. “I think it is important to note you’re a big supporter of Obama,” Klayman told Lemon. “You have favored him in every respect. You have to try to do a hit piece to diminish a very important decision.”

Lemon fired back: “None of that is true, but go on.”

Klayman did just that: “You’re an ultra-leftist and you’re a big supporter of Obama,” Klayman went on, at Lemon’s invitation. “Let’s talk about the NSA, let’s not talk about Larry Klayman. This victory is for the American people… And you, as somebody from the left, should appreciate that you don’t have a police state in this country that’s going to be able to intimidate Americans to chill their free speech rights.” Lemon continued to insist nobody knew what were his political positions but himself. Sensing this crosstalk act could go on forever, Lemon threatened to cut Klayman’s mic and brought out Toobin, who’d been flapping his arms to get somebody’s attention. Toobin, called Klayman a “a professional litigant and lunatic who should not be a representative of the very important issues of this case.” This case, Toobin said, “is based on Larry Klayman’s tin-foil hat paranoia about the NSA being after him.”

Klayman responded “the fact that you want to try to do a hit on me shows me that you’re not a serious person and, frankly, should not be doing legal commentary for CNN,” adding, “This is a disgrace.”

“Oh, my gosh. Are you okay?” Lemon asked Klayman, condescendingly. When Klayman responded in kind, Lemon told his producers to cut him off, which they did. Toobin prattled on legally for a while, and then Lemon brought Klayman back to the screen for the last word, “to show you we’re going to be the bigger person.”

“Don’t kid anybody,” Klayman said. “Let anybody watch this and see that CNN removes you from the screen when it doesn’t like what you think. You’re not CNN, Don, and Toobin, you’re not CNN. CNN is a reputable organization, but you have not acted in a respectful way, and it’s in fact disgraceful. You’re more like Martin Bashir.”

DAMASCUS, Syria (AP) — Syria’s foreign minister said Tuesday his country would defend itself using “all means available” in case of a U.S. strike, denying categorically his government was behind an alleged chemical weapons attack near Damascus and challenging Washington to present proof backing up its accusations.

Walid al-Moallem also said a second trip by United Nations experts to the site of last week’s purported chemical weapons attack has been delayed because of disputes between rebel groups.

Al-Moallem spoke at a press conference in Damascus, a day after U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry stated there was “undeniable” evidence of a large-scale chemical attack likely launched by the regime of President Bashar Assad.

Kerry used particularly tough language to refer to the alleged poison gas attack in a Damascus suburb, saying that an “international norm cannot be violated without consequences.”

The remarks were the clearest justification yet for U.S. military action in Syria, which, if President Barack Obama decides to order it, would most likely involve sea-launched cruise missile attacks on Syrian military targets.

Support for some sort of international military response was likely to grow if it is confirmed that Assad’s regime was responsible for the Aug. 21 attack that activists say killed hundreds of people. The group Doctors Without Borders put the death toll at 355.

Obama has yet to say how he will respond, but appeared to be moving ahead even as the U.N. team already on the ground in Syria collected evidence from the attack.

At the news conference, Al-Moallem called the U.S. accusations that the Syrian regime likely used chemical weapons “categorically false.”

“I challenge those who accuse our forces of using these weapons to come forward with the evidence,” he said. Syria would fight back in case a U.S. strike, he added.

“We have the means to defend ourselves and we will surprise everyone,” he told reporters at a press conference in Damascus. “We will defend ourselves using all means available. I don’t want to say more than that,” he added.

He declined to elaborate or say to what specific means he was referring.

He also said rebels in the capital’s suburbs known as eastern Ghouta have postponed the U.N. team’s visit by one day because gunmen could not reach agreement about guaranteeing their safety. He did not elaborate.

The U.N. team traveled Monday to the western Damascus suburb Moadamiyeh, one of the areas affected by purported chemical attack, where they collected samples and testimony after a treacherous journey through government and rebel-held territory. Their convoy was hit by snipers but members of the team were unharmed.

U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said he had instructed U.N. disarmament chief Angela Kane in Damascus “to register a strong complaint” with both the Syrian government and opposition representatives for the convoy attack.

U.N. spokesman Farhan Haq said the team plans to go out again Tuesday to do more sampling, and activists said the team was expected in the eastern suburbs of Zamalka and Ein Tarma.

An Associated Press photographer outside the team’s hotel in Damascus however said that while he saw Kane and Swedish chemical weapons expert Ake Sellstrom leave the hotel heading to an undisclosed location, the remaining inspectors stayed behind.
