CNN Poll: Rand Paul Edges Out Paul Ryan in GOP Presidential Field

A new national poll shows Kentucky Republican Rand Paul is slightly ahead of the many potential GOP presidential candidates in 2016.

A new CNN/ORC International poll shows 16 percent of Republicans and independents who lean right say they’d support Paul for the nomination.


However, there isn’t much breathing room between Paul and other possible candidates, with 15 percent of the respondents backing Rep. Paul Ryan of Wisconsin and Texas Gov. Rick Perry gathering 11 percent. Former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee, who ran in 2008, also broke double digits in the poll, reports CNN.


Coming in behind them were former Gov. Jeb Bush, 9 percent; New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie and Texas Sen. Ted Cruz with 8 percent each; Florida Sen. Marco Rubio with 5 percent and former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum, a 2012 candidate, polling at 3 percent.


“With a crowded field and no clear frontrunner among the potential candidates, we should expect to see constant fluctuation in the amount of support most candidates get and the order of finish, so it would be easy to read too much into these numbers,” said CNN Polling Director Keating Holland.


Meanwhile, Hillary Clinton remains her party’s favorite, with the poll showing 63 percent of Democrats and left-leaning independents choosing her as the Democratic nominee. Vice President Joe Biden trailed her at 13 percent.


Both Clinton and Biden have said they’ll decide later this year if they’ll run for the presidency.


The poll showed that three other possible Democratic candidates, New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo, Maryland Gov. Martin O’Malley and former Montana Gov. Brian Schweitzer all got single-digit ratings.


ORC International conducted the poll on March 7-9, questioning 801 Americans nationwide by telephone. In the sample, 367 Republicans and right-leaning independents responded, along with 372 Democrats and independents who favor the Democratic Party.

Open thread for night owls: Pushing back on the absurdities of U.S. presidential campaigns


The editors of The Nation announce Project 45:



American presidential election campaigns are absurd. Absurdly expensive. Absurdly long. Absurdly structured. And absurdly narrow in the range of ideas and options offered to a nation with an absurdly low level of voter participation. If ever there was a time to rethink how this country chooses its chief executive, this is it. And we don’t mean that in some rhetorical sense. We mean that this is the time, right now—two years before the first caucuses and primaries, thirty-three months before the November 2016 election names the forty-fifth president—to get serious about the process. That’s why The Nation is launching what we call “Project 45,” an initiative that refuses to accept the assumption that the 2016 campaign has to be dictated by insiders. We will identify and promote the reforms (and reformers) that offer the promise of a more open, inclusive and democratic process.

Why worry about 2016 now, when there are so many other pressing issues? Because the power brokers who profit from our system’s many imperfections are busy locking down the next election.


The Republican National Committee voted in January to compress and control the schedule of caucuses and primaries that will choose the party’s 2016 nominee; this is one part of a broad strategy to limit debate and undermine the ability of grassroots candidates to build momentum. The party also hopes to move its convention from late summer to as early as June. RNC chair Reince Priebus says he’s implementing “reforms to put Republican voters, not the liberal media, in the driver’s seat,” but that’s just the party line for public consumption. The GOP establishment’s real goal is to strengthen the hand of big money, and to make it easier for an acceptable candidate to prevail in the primaries, secure the nomination and maximize post-convention fundraising. And don’t think Democratic Party insiders won’t feel pressure to mirror that top-down strategy, especially if they sense that their nominating process might evolve into anything other than what former Montana governor—and potential candidate—Brian Schweitzer warns could be a “coronation” of former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton. In its January 27 cover story, Time asked, “Can Anyone Stop Hillary?” The magazine’s conclusion was that “her unseen candidacy dominates the political galaxy.”


So it’s settled, right? Let’s hope not. First of all, Clinton has yet to toss her smartphone into the ring. Those who “know” that she will might want to check with former President Mario Cuomo. Besides, even the most ardent “Ready for Hillary” campaigners should recognize that her party, her country and even her candidacy are ill served if she has no real competition. If 2016 is the year Republican bosses will control and amplify their party’s message as never before, and Democrats prepare for a Clinton coronation, then fresh ideas will be marginalized. That increases the likelihood that the campaign will be a money-drenched exercise in broadcast and digital character assassination that discourages participation and frustrates change. Faced with this prospect, progressives must focus on 2016 now in order to expand the debate and make real the promise of democracy. […]


To be clear: this is not a “stop Hillary” exercise. We recognize the former secretary of state’s strengths, along with her appeal to millions of Americans who know it is time for a woman president, including many individuals and groups at the base of the Democratic Party. We understand that keeping the presidency out of right-wing Republican hands has value—especially when the forty-fifth president’s appointments could address the many crises created by the pro-corporate activism of the Supreme Court’s current majority. These understandings cannot, however, become an excuse to close off debate and limit options. So we will engage with and examine potential contenders like Schweitzer and Maryland Governor Martin O’Malley, prospects like Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders and Massachusetts Senator Elizabeth Warren, and any others who might emerge. Through it all, we will encourage primary competition that brings new ideas and new approaches into the process.


Once the nominees are chosen, we will pay attention to serious independent and third-party candidates, who in the best tradition of Progressive Bob La Follette, Socialist Norman Thomas and Ralph Nader, present radical ideas that will eventually be viewed as common sense. We’ll draw attention to ballot access and debate access fights, recognizing that voters deserve a broad discourse, and that front-runners become better contenders—and better presidents—when they’re forced to expand their frame of reference. We saw how this strategy played out in Kansas, with tragic consequences. Operation Rescue collects “evidence” of wrongdoing by abortion providers. It then lobbies law enforcement to investigate the “evidence.” In the case of Dr. Tiller, the organization found its ally in Phill Kline, now under investigation for ethics violations, who spent years investigating and intimidating Dr. Tiller and his clinic. Dr. Tiller was tried and acquitted of all charges, but that didn’t stop Operation Rescue from continuing to claim that Dr. Tiller had performed illegal abortions.

When the law fails to hold abortion providers accountable for performing a legal medical procedure, Operation Rescue supplies information to an extremist who appears willing to take the law into his own hands, as Scott Roeder did.
In his murder trial, Dr. Tiller’s assassin, Scott Roeder, claimed that his decision to murder Dr. Tiller was, in part, a result of the unsuccessful prosecution of Dr. Tiller.

Obama vowing to flex presidential powers in speech



(AP) — Frustrated by years of partisan gridlock, President Barack Obama is moving to flex his presidential powers during his sixth year in office. He’s starting by using Tuesday night’s State of the Union address to announce executive actions to raise the minimum wage for new federal contracts, help the long-term unemployed find work and expand job-training programs.


Obama’s go-it-alone strategy, with modest steps for now, is aimed both at jumpstarting his stagnant second term and prodding a divided Congress to take additional action to boost economic opportunity for millions of Americans. But there’s little indication lawmakers are ready to follow along, particularly as the nation barrels toward the midterm elections.


Keenly aware of Congress’ slim record of recent accomplishments, White House officials see a robust rollout of executive actions as the most effective way to show the public that Obama still wields power as the clock ticks on his presidency.


“Congress is slow to action, and we’re not going to wait for that,” White House chief of staff Denis McDonough said in an interview on “CBS This Morning.”


Yet much of what the president can do on his own is limited, as evidenced by the minimum wage proposal officials previewed ahead of Tuesday’s prime-time address, which will be viewed by millions at home. The executive order will increase the minimum hourly payment for new federal contract workers from $ 7.25 to $ 10.10. But because the measure affects only future contracts, its immediate impact will be minimal.


“The question is how many people, Mr. President, will this executive action actually help?” said House Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio. “I suspect the answer is somewhere close to zero.”


The White House says the wage hike would most benefit janitors and construction laborers working under new federal contracts, as well as military base workers who wash dishes, serve food and do laundry. But officials did not say how many people would fall into those categories.


Obama will seek to build on the executive order by renewing his call for Congress to pass a minimum wage increase for all American workers, a proposal that gained little traction after he first announced it in last year’s State of the Union address. But White House officials feel somewhat optimistic that they could get backing this year given that some Republican lawmakers have also indicated an interest in working on income inequality and economic mobility issues.


Washington’s current focus on inequality comes as many parts of the economy are gaining strength. But the soaring financial markets and corporate balance sheets stand in contrast to the millions of people still out of work or struggling with stagnant incomes that don’t stretch as far as they used to.


Seeking to address those issues, Obama will also announce executive actions on job training, boosting employment opportunities for the long-term unemployed and expanding retirement savings for low- and middle-income Americans.


The retirement savings proposal is geared toward workers whose employers don’t currently offer such plans. The program would allow first-time savers to start building up savings in Treasury bonds that eventually could be converted into traditional IRAs, according to two people who have discussed the proposal with the administration. Those people weren’t authorized to discuss the plan ahead of the announcement and insisted on anonymity.


Obama will also tout an initiative to secure commitments from big corporations not to discriminate against the long-term unemployed during hiring. Representatives from major companies will join the president at the White House on Friday to promote the effort.


Some Republicans have warned that the president’s focus on executive orders could backfire by angering GOP leaders who already don’t trust the White House.


“The more he tries to do it alone and do confrontation, the less he’s going to be able to get cooperation,” said John Feehery, a former top House Republican aide.


The president will still try to score a few legislative victories this year, namely an overhaul of the nation’s broken immigration laws. The Senate passed landmark legislation last summer, but the effort stalled in the Republican-led House. Conservatives are pushing back against the president’s call to create a pathway to citizenship for the 11 million people living in the U.S. illegally. And some Democrats would prefer to use the unresolved issue to mobilize Hispanic voters for this year’s elections.


Obama will follow his State of the Union address with a quick trip Wednesday and Thursday to Maryland, Pennsylvania, Wisconsin and Tennessee to promote his proposals.

And some Democrats would prefer to use the unresolved issue to mobilize Hispanic voters for this year’s elections.


Obama will follow his State of the Union address with a quick trip Wednesday and Thursday to Maryland, Pennsylvania, Wisconsin and Tennessee to promote his proposals.

Kentucky Senator Rand Paul gave the first iron clad hint that he is gearing up for a 2016 Presidential campaign, stating Monday that he thinks Americans are looking for “someone like myself” to vote for.


“I think they want someone outside of, you know, what’s been going on.” Paul said, referring to the political sideshow in Washington.


“For example, someone like myself who has been promoting term limits,” Paul told Fox News Monday. “Someone who says we shouldn’t have, you know, decade after decade longevity up here.”


The Senator left many believing that he was offering himself as a potential candidate to Republican voters as well as the party leadership, noting that he feels he is still “perceived as an outsider… should that be the choice at sometime in 2016.”



Clearly referring to New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, Paul also stated that “I don’t know that a governor is necessarily an outsider. A governor can be an insider as much as anybody else.”


When asked if he thinks Christie is a “true conservative”, following the Governor’s support for Medicaid expansion under Obamacare, Paul replied “You know, depends on how you define that; if you have a very loose definition, probably.”


“If you look at a lot of issues like on whether or not we should accept Obamacare, bring it to our state, expand Medicaid: those would be, I think at best, moderate positions.” Paul added.


The comments are sure to appeal to voters who believe Christie, a former attorney and lobbyist, to be an establishment backed ringer.


Paul also stated that he feels it is imperative to have forged a real profession before entering politics, prompting Charles Krauthammer to quip “Like being an eye doctor, for example?”


Paul has previously stated that he is not yet considering a 2016 run. However, the Paul family is clearly preparing for the eventuality.


In further comments during the interview, Paul spoke about the Obamacare debacle, expressing concern that Americans are going to see rates skyrocket under the new healthcare law.


“If young people don’t buy it the price in a year is going to be higher for the unhealthy people and it will essentially be a high risk pool which is very expensive to cover. and the prices go higher and higher and the only fix becomes more mandates,” said Paul.


The Senator noted that many Americans are beginning to realise that the push for the new law is less about healthcare and more to do with infringing liberty.


“It’s about freedom of choice versus coercion. The president is coercing you into four plans and he’s telling you exactly what you can buy.” Paul stated.

The industry appears unconcerned about the ramifications of its 2008 presidential candidate selection and will rally both its considerable resources and cultural clout to return Clinton to the White House in 2016.


Clinton has not officially announced her intentions to seek the presidency in 2016 but party officials have assumed for some time that she will, indeed run and be the candidate to beat come primary season.

McDonald"s Employee Who Served Raw Burger To Cop Deserves Presidential Medal Of Freedom

A New Hampshire police officer is complaining that a McDonald’s employee deliberately served him a raw burger causing him to get sick.  This McDonald’s employee not only deserves a promotion but should also be awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom.  It actually isn’t very difficult to make this case.  There is little question that this person is much more deserving of receiving this award than a war criminal like Tony Blair who received the award several years ago.  At least this McDonald’s worker is protesting against a criminal entity that has been destroying freedom in America.   There will probably be a bunch of zombies reading this that will be outraged at even the thought of this but it is actually a serious suggestion.  Police officers are widely hated by a large number of people in America and they only have themselves to blame.  Police departments have morphed into uniformed criminal gangs that no longer protect and serve their communities but instead bully people around with their gun and badge. 


Let’s look at some of the facts that prove this to be the case.  There are now countless documented cases of police officers unjustly beating and even killing people.  Many of these cops have actually gotten away with these crimes due to their privileged position as a police officer.  Sometimes police departments have the nerve to charge the person they beat up with crimes like assault and battery.  Combine this with the continued militarization of police departments and this type of thing is only going to get progressively worse.    


When cops aren’t running around beating and killing people they are handing out record numbers of traffic tickets to people.  Many police departments have setup quota systems which require their cops to hand out a certain number of tickets within an allotted time frame.  These jackasses don’t even consider the fact that we are in the midst of an economic depression.  Instead, they continue to hand out ticket after ticket even though we are at a point where a lot of people can barely afford to buy basic necessities.  Make no mistake about it, speed limit laws and many of these other ridiculous traffic regulations are not meant to keep people safe but are instead used as another revenue source for government.  Anyone who willfully participates in enforcing such a system has less value as a human being than the feces that comes out of a pig’s ass.


On top of this, many cops act in a completely disrespectful manner towards other people.  It is almost as if they have some sort of inferiority complex so they have to make up for it by taking a job that allows them to bully people around.  It would be interesting to see how many of these so-called heroes have thwarted or solved real legitimate crimes.  That number on a percentage basis is probably extremely low because these tough guys view writing tickets as a more important task than paying attention to crimes that have real victims.


With all this said should it really be a mystery as to why people hate the police?  They enforce all sorts of ridiculous rules, regulations and laws most of which are totally victimless in nature.  Take for example all of the insanity surrounding the enforcement of drug laws in America.  Do we really need an army of these uniformed idiots running around looking for marijuana, cocaine and other substances?   It should be obvious that we do not.


Businesses around the country should begin refusing to provide service to any and all uniformed police officers until major attitude and policy adjustments occur.  Either that or do what the guy at McDonald’s did and serve them with an inferior product.  This will send a clear message to these criminals that people hate them.  The New Hampshire cop should actually be thankful the McDonald’s employee didn’t do worse to his cheeseburger.  The employee could have dropped a deuce on the hamburger patties if they were truly vindictive.


Make no mistake about it, police officers are not heroes and it is absolutely ridiculous that they are portrayed with such reverence by the corporate media.  Look at how they present stories in which a cop gets killed in the line of duty.  It is as if they want us to believe that their lives are more valuable than someone who isn’t a cop when in reality the opposite is true.  Anyone who decides to make a living as a police officer is less valuable than someone who earns a living by providing a legitimate service that people want.


Some say that not all cops are bad, but this is a misinformed view.  Anybody that willingly becomes a cop to help enforce a never ending list of unjust rules, regulations and laws is mostly as bad as anybody else on these forces.  Some might be worse than others, but that’s about all that can be argued.  The system is so far gone that cops who have any sort of conscience left should quit in protest and find real honest work.  Working as a police officer is dishonest because the profession has devolved into government sanctioned criminality.

Former California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger is engaged in a campaign to change The Constitution to allow him to run for president in 2016, according to reports.


The New York Post claims that Schwarzenegger has been publicly discussing his plans to file suit that would overturn the rule written into the Constitution that bars foreign-born citizens from taking the office of President or Vice President.


“Schwarzenegger has been talking openly about working on getting the constitutional rules changed so he can run for president in 2016. He is ready to file legal paperwork to challenge the rules.” the Post notes, citing an unnamed source.


Section 1 of Article Two of the Constitution sets forth the eligibility requirements for serving as president of the United States:


“No person except a natural born Citizen, or a Citizen of the United States, at the time of the Adoption of this Constitution, shall be eligible to the Office of President; neither shall any Person be eligible to that Office who shall not have attained to the Age of thirty-five Years, and been fourteen Years a Resident within the United States.”



The Twelfth Amendment also states, “No person constitutionally ineligible to the office of President shall be eligible to that of Vice-President of the United States.”


Born in Austria, Schwarzenegger has been a US citizen since 1983, which enabled him to successfully run for Governorship in 2003.


The Fourteenth Amendment notes that “All persons born or naturalized in the United States, and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States and of the State wherein they reside.”


Under Article One of the United States Constitution, representatives and senators are only required to be U.S. citizens.


Schwarzenegger has said several times that he would definitely run for President, should the law be changed. Most recently he told Jay Leno in 2010 that he would jump at the opportunity “Without any doubt.”


Any amendment to the Constitution must be approved by two-thirds majority in the House and the Senate, then must be ratified by at least 38 of the 50 states.


As we have previously reported, Schwarzenegger has, over the years, made several disturbing comments to the effect that it is his dream to reach a position of power akin to a dictator.


In 1976, Arnie told Rolling Stone: “I feel you only can have a few leaders… and then the rest is followers. I feel that I am the born leader and that I’ve always impressed with being the leader. I hate to be the follower. I had this when I was a little boy… I didn’t think about money. I thought about the fame, about just being the greatest. I was dreaming about being some dictator of a country or some savior like Jesus.”


His Nazi ties are also well documented. Gustav Schwarzenegger, the actor’s father, was a member of the Sturmabteilung, or SA, the Nazi party’s paramilitary wing. News reports about the elder Schwarzenegger’s Nazi links first surfaced in 1990.


Film producer George Butler, who chronicled Schwarzenegger’s rise to fame as a champion bodybuilder in the 1970′s, circulated a book proposal in the late 90s that quoted the young Schwarzenegger expressing admiration for Hitler.


The producer wrote in his book proposal that in the 1970′s, he considered Mr. Schwarzenegger a “flagrant, outspoken admirer of Hitler.,” the New York Times reported in 2003. In the proposal, Mr. Butler also said he had witnessed Schwarzenegger playing “Nazi marching songs from long-playing records in his collection at home” and said that the actor “frequently clicked his heels and pretended to be an S.S. officer.”


Schwarzenegger was also best buddies with Kurt Waldheim, the former secretary general of the United Nations who had a past as a Nazi who participated in atrocities during World War II.

Add another name to the short list of Democrats seriously considering a run for president in 2016.


In an interview with RealClearPolitics, former Montana Gov. Brian Schweitzer indicated that he may launch a White House bid, even if front-runner Hillary Clinton also enters the race.


“I still hold the people of Iowa and New Hampshire in high regard,” Schweitzer said of the nation’s first caucus and primary states. “The people of Iowa are a whole lot like the people of Montana. And, of course, New Hampshire’s a lot like Montana. We don’t have a sales tax. ‘Live Free or Die’ — we understand that notion in Montana.”


A popular two-term governor who once used a red-hot branding iron to veto several bills passed by the Republican-controlled state legislature, Schweitzer would offer a hefty dose of rural folksiness against the East Coast urbanites in the potential Democratic field, including Clinton, Vice President Joe Biden, and Maryland Gov. Martin O’Malley.


Asked whether there would be room for a populist candidate to run a credible race against Clinton, Schweitzer left no doubt that he can envision himself in that very role.


After noting that a high percentage of Democratic primary voters are women and agreeing that it is “time for a woman president,” Schweitzer quickly qualified his assessment by adding what would likely be a central tenet of his pitch in a campaign against Clinton:


“There’s a whole lot of America that looks at each other and says, ‘Well, there’s 340 million people living in America. Isn’t there somebody other than a Bush or a Clinton who can be president in these modern times? Isn’t there hope for somebody who’s running a business or who has served overseas or comes from a different occupation to become president? Are we now in the era of royalty again?’ So I think there’s some level of frustration about that.”


Shortly after leaving office, Schweitzer executed a hostile takeover of Stillwater Mining — the largest publicly traded mining company in Montana. He also owns several ranches across the state.


His latest comments about potentially running against Clinton are in stark contrast to an appraisal he made to the Associated Press a year ago. At that time, Schweitzer said, “If Hillary runs, she walks away with the nomination and then beats whichever Republican.”


But as he has settled into his private sector role, Schweitzer’s views on whether anyone can beat the former senator and secretary of state appear to have changed significantly.


After being term-limited last year, he was heavily recruited by national Democrats to run for his state’s open Senate seat in 2014 but announced in July that he would not do so.


His heavy use of the veto pen — or veto branding iron, in his case — and reputation as a competent fiscal steward earned him consistently high approval ratings in Republican-leaning Montana.


Schweitzer’s tough-talking leadership style, anti-Washington ethos, and proven ability to win in a state that has not been friendly to his own party in presidential elections might draw Democratic comparisons to New Jersey’s Republican Gov. Chris Christie, another 2016 presidential aspirant.


But the pro-gun, pro-coal policies that worked for Schweitzer so well in Montana would be a far tougher sell in a Democratic primary.


Another of Schweitzer’s most immediate challenges in mounting a serious campaign would be to build his name recognition against the universally known and already nearly anointed Clinton.


But in the interview with RCP, Schweitzer suggested that his down-home persona and knack for generating free media coverage might keep him in the hunt, particularly in Iowa — a state that has not been friendly territory for Clinton in the past.


“Who would’ve thunk Obama would come out of this thing when you had, my God, Dodd, Biden, Billy Richardson, Hillary Clinton,” Schweitzer said of the 2008 Democratic nominating contest. “So the nice thing about the people of Iowa is they ain’t going to let the rest of America make up their minds for them.”

When a new president takes office, his ne’er-do-well siblings receive a whole slew of opportunities for corrupt behavior, legal scrapes, and generally humiliating mayhem. Here are a few of our favorites:


1. Neil Bush: Opening doors when opportunity knocks


George W. Bush’s younger brother Neil certainly hasn’t done much to make his brother’s rocky political life any easier. Neil’s been making the wrong kind of news since as far back as the 1980s, when as the son of Vice President George H.W. Bush he served as a director of Silverado Savings and Loan, which cost taxpayers an estimated $ 1 billion when it collapsed. He drew accusations of insider trading chicanery in 1999 when he made nearly $ 800,000 in three trades of Kopin Corporation stock in a single day; Bush had been a consultant for Kopin and sold on the day the stock’s price soared as the result of good news from a client. Bush also had a somewhat dubious-sounding arrangement with Grace Semiconductor, a Chinese company with ties to former Chinese president Jiang Zemin. Despite admittedly not knowing anything about semiconductors, Bush had a deal to receive $ 2 million in stock and $ 10,000 for every board meeting he attended to discuss business strategies, a deal that led to claims of influence peddling.


These little business episodes were just appetizers for Bush’s truly bizarre 2003 divorce proceedings. His wife Sharon Smith accused Bush of enjoying the company of high-priced escorts on business trips to Thailand and Hong Kong. (Bush’s defense: Yes, he had sex with these strange women, but they might not have been prostitutes. They just showed up at his door, and he slept with them. No money changed hands.) Not content to let things die with that simple embarrassment of infidelity, Neil’s friend John Spalding accused Sharon of pulling out Neil’s hair for use in a voodoo curse. Sharon countered that she simply wanted the hair tested for evidence of cocaine use. In either event, the President couldn’t have been too pleased as this saga played out in front of the media.


2. Roger Clinton: Codename “Headache”


Some presidential siblings wait until their brother takes up residence in the White House to start making trouble. Not Bill Clinton’s half-brother Roger, though. By the time Bill had jumped from the Arkansas governor’s mansion to Washington, Roger had already spent a year behind bars for a 1984 cocaine distribution arrest. He then spent much of Bill’s two terms trying to realize his dream of becoming an Elvis-like rock star with his band, Politics, and appearing in a string of abysmal movies that must have been almost as embarrassing for Bill as the cocaine arrest. (It’s one thing to get in trouble for drug trafficking, but it’s quite another to have the poor judgment to appear opposite Pauly Shore in Bio-Dome.)


Despite his busy schedule, he still found time to get into an altercation with a stockbroker at a Knicks game in 1993 and later unsuccessfully lobbied for pardons for his drug-dealing chums. Bill actually included Roger’s cocaine arrest in his flurry of pardons in 2001; Roger showed his gratitude by promptly getting arrested for drunk driving a month later. It’s easy to see why his Secret Service codename was “Headache.”


3 & 4. Hugh and Tony Rodham: Brothers in harm


Despite the nickname, Roger might not even have been the biggest familial headache Bill Clinton had to deal with during his term. Instead, the Clintons introduced a new species of White House blight: bad presidential brothers-in-law. While Roger was pretty much a run-of-the-mill troublemaker, Hillary’s brothers Hugh and Tony were bumbling power grabbers who kept making almost comical attempts to capitalize on their sister’s high station. In 1999, Hugh, a former Florida public defender, and Tony, whose resume included work as both a private eye and a repo man, joined in on a $ 118 million business plan to process and import hazelnuts from the Republic of Georgia. There was a slight hitch though: The brothers’ key connection in Georgia was a major political rival of Georgia’s president (a key American ally). Bill and Hillary had to work in tandem with National Security Advisor Sandy Berger to talk the brothers out of their hazelnut empire. (We can only hope Roger Clinton would later defend his own antics with, “…yeah, but I never attempted to politically destabilize former Soviet republics, did I?”)


After this episode, Hugh seemed to start behaving. That image only lasted for a couple of years, though. When Bill Clinton issued the slew of pardons before leaving office in 2001, drug dealer Carlos Vignali and Glenn Braswell, who had peddled a fake baldness cure by mail, received a sentence commutation and a pardon, respectively. Somehow, Hugh Rodham pocketed $ 400,000 for offering legal help in acquiring the pardons. Although the transaction may have been perfectly legal, it certainly didn’t appear all that kosher, and the Clintons suffered further embarrassment when the story broke.


5. Billy Carter: The mother of all brothers


Truly the standard by which all other presidential sibling’s antics are judged, Billy burst onto the national scene as the boisterous, hard-drinking counterpoint to his pious, reserved brother Jimmy. Billy’s early antics were amusing and fairly innocuous: He endorsed the legendarily terrible Billy Beer in an effort to make a little cash off of his hard-living image, and he made quips like, “My mother went into the Peace Corps when she was sixty-eight. My one sister is a motorcycle freak, my other sister is a Holy Roller evangelist and my brother is running for president. I’m the only sane one in the family.” While he worked hard to convey a roughneck bumpkin image to the press, Billy’s confidantes claimed that he was in fact well-read and an able businessman who used his Southern bona fides to help his older brother’s political cause. On the other hand, Billy’s drinking turned from amusing to tragic as his fame grew.


In 1979, he had to go into rehab to curb his drinking. Around the same time he nearly lost his Georgia home to the IRS for failing to pay a six-figure federal income tax bill for 1978. The real capper, though, came when Billy began consorting with Libya at a time when relations between the North African nation and the U.S. were starting to strain. In 1978, he made a trip to Libya with a group of Georgia businessmen who were interested in expanding trade with the country; Billy then hosted a Libyan delegation in Atlanta. When questioned about his dealings, Billy responded, “The only thing I can say is there is a hell of a lot more Arabians than there is Jews,” a public-relations nightmare for which he later apologized. The damage got worse in 1980 when Billy registered as an agent of the Libyan government and received a $ 220,000 loan from the Libyans for helping facilitate oil sales. This transaction led to accusations of influence peddling and a Congressional investigation. In short, it was enough to make Jimmy Carter long for the days when his brother’s antics only included such little quirks as urinating in public in front of a group of reporters and dignitaries.


6. Donald Nixon: Big loans for small potatoes


Prior to 1960, nobody had even heard of Donald Nixon, even though his brother Richard had been VP under Eisenhower. When Richard launched his own presidential campaign against JFK, though, Donald found himself flung into the spotlight. Don was a restaurateur, and not a very good one. In 1954, he was running a chain of Nixon’s drive-ins in Whittier, California and fell upon some tough financial times. In an effort to keep the business afloat, he accepted a $ 205,000 loan from Howard Hughes. “Big Don,” as he called himself, never got around to paying Hughes back, and voters had to wonder why a defense contractor like Hughes was suddenly so interested in a chain of burger joints that just happened to be run by the Vice President’s rotund brother. Whatever the reasoning, the loan wasn’t enough, and the chain went under the following year.
Don caused a second stir in 1969 by once again joining his pal Hughes for a shadowy trip to the Dominican Republic. Nothing came of this episode, but it certainly didn’t look good to have Big Don once again flitting about with Hughes. All of this might explain why the press later learned in 1973 that during Nixon had the Secret Service tap Big Don’s phone calls lest he do something illegal, or even more problematic, embarrassing to his brother.


HONORABLE MENTION: Sam Houston Johnson


Lyndon Johnson’s brother loved to have him some drinks. Once hammered, he’d get chatty with the press, a habit that LBJ eventually curbed by placing him under Secret Service surveillance. According to several sources, he’d occasionally pass a bad check, too. Sam Houston Johnson later wrote a book My Brother Lyndon in which he slammed LBJ as a bully who was a difficult boss. As Time put it, “A rivalry with the leader of the free world played hell with Sam’s self-image.”
