A Brief Intro to Custom Quilts

If you are considering looking for an inexpensive new hobby then looking into custom quilts should be one of your options. Your old comforters can be looked at as inspiration in combining old and new materials to create something beautiful and unique in your home. Consider making your design a gift to a loved one or family member.

Heirloom quilts were developed in the early colonial years mostly for warmth and practicality, quilting was a means of saving fabric efficiently because buying the premade material was considered expensive. Some women would collects scraps of fabric and combine them, creating a handmade quilt. Most other wives would add a little creativity in the designs, such as adding little bits of flare.

A comforter is composed of three layers of textiles, the top cover, the batting and the woven back. Batting is usually made of wool, cotton or polyester. Selecting your own batting may benefit you or a loved one if you or they are allergic to one of the previously mentioned items especially if you are buying them pre-made.

Although it is not necessary that all three layers be combined, most prefer to use only two layers. These comforters are normally differentiated from other covers because of the patchwork designs on them. Choosing the correct kinds of fabric is important seeing as cloths have tendencies to bleed and end up staining your work.

The art of quilting was first created as a means of saving fabric and were also used to mark important life moments such as marriages and the birth of children. Some were not only used as bedding but also warm clothing for the winter months. Now modern designs are used as decoration, table cloths, wall hangings and also bedding for the whole family.

You may decide to make more traditional handmade quilts as gifts or for your own personal use, which have three different layers of textile to combine. Or you may choose to mix only two layers to your comforter instead. You may opt to eliminate the wadding which is the second layer, providing the insulation to your piece and is usually made of cotton.

Studying the style of handmade quilts can help you feel attached to the technique of your loved one. You may feel drawn to create your own custom quilts after the same manner or choose to make something different. The possibilities are endless.
