Lawmakers ludicrously claim tax-per-mile needed to offset prevalence of fuel-efficient cars

Lawmakers in Washington state are edging closer to implementing a new system that would monitor and tax drivers based on miles driven, under a new highway funding proposal.

The Washington State Transportation Commission says the motor fuel tax, which currently pays for 76% of transportation investments, is unsustainable “over the long term.”

In a dizzying twist of logic, the Transportation Commission blames the prevalence of fuel-efficient cars as the reason the state now needs a per-mile tax, arguing that “the move to cleaner, smarter vehicles must be accompanied by a change in the way we pay for our roads.”

“According to the study, drivers could be charged three ways; either with a flat-fee, by having odometers checked, or with an electronic device installed in cars to measure how many miles are driven,” a King 5 News report states.

Last week, a committee set up by the Transportation Commission, after conducting a $ 1.4 million study, reported the fee could generate upwards of $ 3 billion. By 2015, Wasington lawmakers hope to roll out a pilot program in order to gauge the amount of public resistance to the new tax.

As expected, however, not everyone is happy with the idea of having to pitch in to help the state. “I choose to drive a car that takes less gas,” Portland resident Hayley Ramerman says, “so I think I shouldn’t have to be charged more because I’m choosing to drive a car that is more fuel efficient.”

Others are concerned the technology used by the state to monitor driving habits poses broad privacy rights violations. “[I]t’s the “black box” system in particular that’s untenable: It would force us to surrender our privacy,” Mark Perry, a scholar with the American Enterprise Institute, said last year. “Each day more and more of us are required to tell government agencies more and more about ourselves. Do we really want the government collecting data about driving habits?”

Last year, Oregon launched its own tax-per-mile scheme and began charging drivers a 1.5 cent fee. And it’s going to get worse before it gets any better.

“The incentive for states to pursue this kind of program could build as cars become more fuel efficient, especially considering President Obama wants new vehicles to get 54.5 mpg by 2025, up from the average now of 23.5 mpg’s,” according to a report filed by Fox News.

Boiling frog anecdote used to convince Washingtonians that tax-per-mile is needed.

In an informational produced by the Transportation Commission, the anecdote of the boiling frog is used to relate how the rise of fuel-efficient vehicles will spell certain disaster for highway funding efforts. It also lists other states considering implementation of a similar tax, states like Nevada, Minnesota, Colorado and California and a stretch of Highway I-95 which runs from Maine to Florida.

As Infowars and others have exposed, these measures have been long in coming. Since as early as 1997, radio host Alex Jones has been warning of a plan to put GPS tracking devices in all vehicles. Now people, like the executive director of the Southern California Assn. of Governments, are claiming “This really is a must for our nation.”

Since 2004, state legislators have waged an uphill battle attempting to convince citizens to sign on to similar taxes. According to one non-scientific poll, conducted by a local TV station in California, however, 95 percent of viewers, out of 339 people who voted, were against the tax.

In the grander scheme, the plan to tax per mile ultimately follows goals set forth in the United Nation’s notorious Agenda 21 action plan, which among other things purportedly seeks to “Encourage economic policies conducive to sustainable development.”

Hundreds of Boston school bus drivers are back on the job Wednesday following one-day wildcat strike that sent parents scrambling to find a way to get their kids to and from classes.

The drivers’ union said Wednesday it had agreed to return to work after the company contracted by the school to run bus services, Veolia Transportation Inc., agreed to a meeting with the union. About 600 drivers had walked off the job.

Boston.com says:

“The bus drivers went on the unexpected strike Tuesday, leaving 30,000 students without a ride to school. They were protesting a variety of grievances, from payroll problems to a new Web page that allows parents to track their children’s buses.”

The Associated Press reports:

“Drivers picketing outside the bus yards Tuesday said the company was not honoring the terms of their contract. They’ve also said they’re frustrated with Veolia’s treatment of them, including changes in their health care plan, failing to provide key route information and ineffective communications.”

A meeting was scheduled for this morning to discuss the issues raised by the striking drivers.

The FBI employed a bomb squad, a hazardous material team and helicopters when they searched Miriam Carey’s condominium in Stamford, Connecticut on Thursday.

Carey was executed by police after briefly eluding them following an encounter at a police state checkpoint outside the White House. The incident resulted in a lockdown of Congress and a “shelter in place” order on Capitol Hill.

Stamford resident Eric Bredow told News 19 WLTV an FBI bomb squad arrived at his building and a helicopter swooped overhead. Other residents were ordered to evacuate and were told they would not be allowed to return home for hours or overnight.

CNN reported the condominium complex remained cordoned off on Friday.

On Friday, the FBI and local law enforcement said they did not find firearms or “evidence that [Carey] was angry with the government,” The Courant reported.

Diana death driver’s family delighted at police probe into claims she was murdered by a British soldier

An investigation into a claim the SAS was involved in the death of Princess Diana has been welcomed by the family of Henri Paul, her driver on the night she died.

Scotland Yard has confirmed that officers from its specialist crime and operations command are assessing information handed to it ‘recently’ by the Royal Military Police.

The extraordinary allegation emerged during the second court martial of Sergeant Danny Nightingale, who was found guilty of illegally possessing a gun and ammunition.

It was outlined in a letter seen by the Daily Mail and written by the mother-in-law of an SAS sniper, known only as Soldier N, who was a key witness for the prosecution.

The eight-page correspondence claims Soldier N boasted it was the SAS that had ‘arranged Princess Diana’s death’ and that it had been ‘covered up’.

Bay Area Drivers Encounter “Speed Enforced by Drones” Signs

Under “threat” of drone strike, drivers are encouraged to watch their speeds.

Several highway signs “warning” drivers of drone-enforced speed zones were mounted around the San Francisco Bay Area.

The professionally-made metal signs read “Speed Enforced by Drones” and show a Predator drone drawn in an apparent homage to a recent Anthony Freda painting.

“It is a black and white reflective sign, just like the signs that we use on the side of the road for speed limits and everything else,” California Highway Patrol Officer Andrew Barclay told CBS San Francisco.

California Highway Patrol said that the signs are fake.

“At CHP we definitely do not have drones,” Officer Barclay said. “We use radar, lidar, pace, we have planes and we have helicopters, but we do not have drones.”

“Along with not having drones we definitely do not have any drones that would fire any type of weaponry.”

According to Officer Barclay, the signs violate Section 21465 of the California Vehicle Code, which states that no one may place a sign on a highway that imitates an official traffic control device.

The quality and mounting of the signs rival real traffic signs.

“One of the signs that we found on Highway 37 was actually mounted using tamper-resistant bolts,” Officer Barclay said. “The other two signs were strapped using metal strapping on poles on the side of the freeway.”

The signs utilize headlight reflective materials so night-time drivers can easily be reminded to watch their speeds in these non-existent, drone-enforced speed zones.

But will the use of drones to catch speeders always remain a fantasy?

We recently reported on Customs and Border Patrol Predator drones being used by other agencies such as the Texas Department of Transportation.

Interdepartmental drone sharing will become more common as the Department of Homeland Security promotes a “layered security strategy.”

As domestic drone use increases, it is not totally inconceivable that police will eventually use drones to enforce speed zones.

One person commenting on the drone signs at Jalopnik.com shares a similar sentiment.

“This may just be a prank, but I honestly believe that we will see drone-based highway enforcement in the not-too-distant future,” the commenter said. “Small drones are becoming less and less expensive, and will soon likely be less expensive to patrol highways with than with a police cruiser (especially taking fuel costs into consideration.)”

“This might not be our reality today, but I would be surprised if this were not a reality within a decade.”

So the next time Kowalski speeds down the highway in his ’70 Dodge Challenger towards San Francisco, he might fear drones more than the desert.
