Obama To Sign Executive Orders On Equal Pay

Just because something is good, does not mean he can subvert the law.

I Like what it does, I do not like how he did it.

IF people where more politically aware, they would of voted out the A-holes that voted this down twice.

I get the reason obama likes the Executive orders, more so now during his 2nd. This is pandering to genders, its a half measure to start with (though any advance on this front is good) and it was done wrong.

We have a senate and congress for a reason, if laws that the people want, and that are good for the nation, can’t get passed. Unable even to agree on a simple operational budget, how the hell are these people still in office?

This like everything else they do is pandering, . Federal contractors and reporting to the labor dept pay?

You want to know why this didn’t pass? Special interest lobbying, companies do not want anything that mean they have to pay more…

SO Just like employees who got there full time cut from 40 to part time because mandatory health care, extrapolate that behavior with poorly thought out forced Executive order.

Fellas, get ready to make as much as the fairer sexes.

Equality, Yay.

ETA:

A bill that took the chance of employers lowering pay, rather than raising pay (remember its just statistics, a number on a spread sheet) I would be completely behind.

Its why we are supposed to have a congress, to make sure we don’t pass crap that hurts the people…

So once again, how are we still electing dems and reps?

When It Comes to Health, Not All Fruit Created Equal

(Newser) – If you’re worried about diabetes, you might want to stock up on blueberries and ditch the fruit juice. That’s the upshot of a new study in the British Medical Journal that tracked the eating habits of 180,000 subjects over nearly 30 years. The simplified findings: Those who ate five servings of whole blueberries a week had a 26% lower risk of contracting type 2 diabetes, reports the New York Times. Grapes and apples also did well, followed by prunes, pears, bananas, and grapefruit. Other fruits didn’t seem to have much of an effect in terms of diabetes.

One striking part of the study is that fruit juice might actually raise the risk for the disease, notes National Geographic. That’s probably in part because dietary fiber and nutrients are lost in the juicing process, explains Bloomberg. So are blueberries a silver bullet? Not even close. “We don’t want to leave the impression that there’s any magical fruit,” says a co-author of the study, per the Boston Globe. And, he adds, no amount of blueberries in the world will compensate for things like a lack of exercise, an otherwise lousy diet, or a pack of smokes. (A previous study suggested blueberries also helped ward off dementia.)

Kerry: Same-sex spouses" visas will get equal treatment

  • NEW: The change is expected to increase visa applications from same-sex spouses

  • Secretary of State John Kerry says all couples now will be treated the same

  • The policy covers same-sex spouses of Americans and foreigners

  • The change follows a major Supreme Court ruling on same-sex marriage

(CNN) — Legally married same-sex spouses seeking U.S. visas will now be treated the same as opposite-sex spouses, Secretary of State John Kerry announced Friday.

Kerry told a meeting with consular staff in London that the change means that his department was “tearing down an unjust and an unfair barrier that for too long stood in the way of same-sex families being able to travel as a family to the United States.”

Beginning immediately, same-sex spouses of both U.S. citizens and foreigners will be treated equally as opposite-sex spouses, Kerry explained.

“As long as a marriage has been performed in a jurisdiction that recognizes it so that it is legal, then that marriage is legal under U.S. law, and every married couple would be treated exactly the same,” he said.

A State Department official told CNN on condition of not being identified that the change was expected to immediately affect up to 100 applicants. The official said the department expected the number of applicants from same-sex spouses to increase with expanded awareness of the new policy.

Kerry’s announcement followed a June ruling by the Supreme Court that struck down a key part of a law that denied legally married same-sex couples the same federal benefits provided heterosexual spouses.

On a 5-4 vote, the high court struck down part of the Defense of Marriage Act, which defines marriage as only between a man and a woman.

Under DOMA, Social Security, pension and bankruptcy benefits, along with family medical leave protections and other federal provisions, did not apply to gay and lesbian couples legally married in states that recognize such unions.

At issue was whether DOMA violated equal protection guarantees in the Fifth Amendment’s due process clause as applied to same-sex couples legally married under the laws of their states.

What you need to know about same-sex marriage in the U.S. around the world
