Jeb Bush says illegal immigration often "an act of love"

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – Jeb Bush, a potential Republican presidential candidate in 2016, said on Sunday that illegal immigrants who come to the United States to provide for their families are not committing a felony but an “act of love.”

In comments at odds with the views of many in his party, Bush, the son of the 41st president and brother of the 43rd, said of the divisive immigration issue: “I think we need to kind of get beyond the harsh political rhetoric to a better place.

“I’m going to say this and it will be on tape and so be it,” Bush said in an interview with Fox News host Shannon Bream in an event at the Texas presidential library of his father, George H.W. Bush.

“The way I look at this is someone who comes to our country because they couldn’t come legally … and they crossed the border because they had no other means to work, to be able to provide for their family, yes, they broke the law, but it’s not a felony.

“It’s an act of love, it’s an act of commitment to your family.

Bush, 61, added: “I honestly think that that is a different kind of crime. There should be a price paid, but it shouldn’t rile people up that people are actually coming to this country to provide for their families.”

Bush repeated at the event that he would decide on a presidential bid by the end of the year.

A comprehensive immigration reform bill passed the Democratic-controlled U.S. Senate in June 2013 but has stalled in the Republican-controlled House of Representatives.

Republican lawmakers have cited deep divisions in the party over the issue, including granting legal status to 11 million undocumented immigrants.

A Republican Party review after the last presidential election had urged the party to embrace immigration reform to attract more Hispanic support. Democratic President Barack Obama, who was re-elected in 2012, won 71 percent of the Hispanic vote to Republican challenger Mitt Romney’s 27 percent.

Recent polls have suggested that if he were to run, Bush, a former Florida governor, would be weighed down by Americans’ lingering attitudes toward his brother, George W. Bush, who left office in January 2009 as one of the least popular presidents in U.S. history.

In a Washington Post/ABC News poll last month, nearly half the voters surveyed said they “definitely would not” vote for Jeb Bush in 2016 – a level of disapproval matched only by Romney. Even Bush’s mother, former first lady Barbara Bush, has been lukewarm about the notion of another son running for president.

Asked by Bream about the critical considerations that would go into his decision on whether to run for the presidency, Bush said one was whether he could do it with a “hopeful, optimistic message” that avoids drawing him into a political “mudfight.”

The other consideration, he said, “is it OK for my family?

Is it something that isn’t a huge sacrifice for our family.”

He added: “It turns out that not running has generated more interest than if I said I was running.”

Maher: What "I love about the Pauls"

Liberal comic Bill Maher praised Sen. Rand Paul following his straw poll victory at CPAC, saying the Kentucky Republican could give Hillary Clinton “a run for her money,” if both run in 2016.

Maher, during his HBO program “Real Time with Bill Maher” on Friday, said that while most of the Republican lawmakers at CPAC called for action in Crimea, Paul is “the one guy who says quite the opposite, like his father, he is for not for having an American empire. That’s the thing I love about the Pauls.”

Agreeing with Maher, blogger Andrew Sullivan commended the ability that Paul, who won over 30 percent of the CPAC straw poll vote last week, has in delivering his message.

(QUIZ: Do you know Rand Paul?)

“I think Rand Paul’s attempt to say what most people in this country really understand, which is we don’t need to run the world. We don’t want to run the world. America would be in a better place if we were less interested in our own power, and more interested in freedom,” Sullivan said.

“He could give Hillary a run for her money,” Maher added.

Author Salman Rushdie said if the two ran against each other, Paul could attract the “youth wing of the GOP” comparing it to the appeal President Barack Obama had during his 2008 campaign.

“If he can break into that, then he’s got a chance,” Rushdie said.

(PHOTOS: Rand Paul’s career)

Sullivan echoed Rushdie, adding if Clinton were to run against Paul, “She’ll come off like a neocon, because in fact, she is a bit of a neocon.”

Author Amy Chua said Paul is “so independent-minded,” which attracts a lot of support.

“I think, Hillary Clinton, you feel like it’s just going to fit into certain familiar things,” Chua said. “And he’s just a little unpredictable, you know, he doesn’t care what people think and that’s appealing to a lot of people.”

Conservative Pundits Love Pope Francis" Progressive Rhetoric

There’s no question that Pope Francis has Catholics and non-Catholics alike sitting up and taking notice. Posting popularity numbers that most politicians would sell their firstborn child for, Pope Francis is enjoying a Catholic revitalization that is more in words than actual deeds:

Despite the immense popularity the aged Argentine has won since his election last year, not a jot of doctrine has changed, nor has the Catholic Church swelled with American converts.

But there’s more than one way to measure a pontiff’s influence on his far-flung flock. Start asking around — here in Boston and beyond, Catholics and atheists alike — and it’s easy to find people eager to share how one man, in just one year, has changed their lives.

There’s the gay man who finally feels welcome in his church. The woman who weeps when headlines deliver good news at last. The former priest who no longer clenches his fist during Mass. The Latinos who waited forever for a Pope who speaks their language.

“I’m telling you, brother, if you focus on the numbers, you’re missing the story,” says the Rev. John Unni, a Boston pastor

I suspect that conservative pundits Ana Navarro and Peggy Noonan are missing the story as well, as they gush over Pope Francis on This Week.

It is said that Confucius, the great teacher had over 3,000 students in China, a remarkable achievement for those days. Hundreds of years later, the ancient sage is still proving to be the main inspiration for a Chinese teacher to teach Chinese language courses to over 3,000 students in Cameroon and Tanzania.

The 10 teaching centers affiliated to the Confucius Institute at the University of Yaounde II in Cameroon, offer courses ranging from elementary Chinese to language lessons for business purposes. Most of the students are from universities, though it is not uncommon to see middle and primary school students too at the center.

The center follows the “One Institute, Multiple Teaching Centers” model, pioneered by Zhang Xiaozhen, the former director of the Confucius Institute at the University of Yaounde II.

Zhang was recently recognized as one of the “People of the Year” for her efforts in dissemination of Chinese culture at “2013 Brilliance of China” event. Head of the Buddha’s Light International Association Hsing Yun and renowned film star Jackie Chan were among the other recipients of the honor.

“I am happy to receive the honor on behalf of the over 10,000 teachers and volunteers teaching Chinese overseas.” Zhang says. “Many of them are working just as diligently as I am.”

Sick of “Love Actually”? Read a romance novel!

“Love Actually” is not about romance. When Chris Orr made this point in The Atlantic, the Internet exploded with briefs for and against. Having watched “Love Actually” for the first time to see what all the fuss was about, I have to say that I think Orr is correct. Also, the film is terrible.

If it’s not about romance, though, then what is this movie, billed as “the ultimate romantic comedy,” actually about? That’s easy. It’s about romantic comedies — or, more generally, about movies. In fact, “Love Actually” is positively obsessed with its own movieness; with spectacle, performance and audience. Set in the holiday season, the narrative opens by encouraging the audience to visit an airport and see all the people greeting each other — “love actually is all around,” the voice-over insists, meaning that love is visible, and encouraging you (and you, and you) to turn your holiday travels into a rom-com in miniature. Watch people as if they are in a movie, the voice-over insists; they are all performing love and affection for your emotional and aesthetic pleasure. And then, of course, watch the movie to teach you how to watch life. “Love Actually” does not eschew authenticity, as Noah Gittell suggests. Rather, it presents the movie itself as authenticity, the lens through which to view the world.

Joan Jett orders SeaWorld to stop torturing whales with “I Love Rock ‘n’ Roll”

SeaWorld’s lacking in celebrity love these days: Willie Nelson, Heart and Barenaked Ladies all cancelled performances at the Orlando water park in the wake of the controversial documentary Blackfish, which exposed its alleged inhumane treatment of whales. Now Joan Jett, who already gained attention for her animal rights crusade when she was booted from a Macy’s Thanksgiving Day float, is demanding that SeaWorld stop using recordings of her music in its “Shamu Rocks” show. (After a similar request from Tommy Lee last year, the show is also prohibited from using Mötley Crüe songs.)

In an open letter to Jim Atchison, SeaWorld’s president and CEO, Jett wrote:

I was surprised and upset to see on YouTube that SeaWorld used “I Love Rock ‘n Roll” as the opening music for its cruel and abusive “Shamu Rocks” show. I’m among the millions who saw Blackfish and am sickened that my music was blasted without my permission at sound-sensitive marine mammals. These intelligent and feeling creatures communicate by sonar and are driven crazy in the tiny tanks in which they are confined. If I don’t receive written confirmation that SeaWorld will cease and desist from using any Joan Jett & the Blackhearts music, I will be forced to take further action, and you’ll find me among the PETA protesters outside your parks.

Sea World’s reliance on cruelty and captivity for commerce has been widely exposed. I hope you’ll take the respectable path and release the captive orcas to coastal sanctuaries so that they can live out their lives with other orcas in nature. This move would show that your company is truly family-friendly.

Here’s the video Jett was likely referring to:

Incognito: "My Actions Were Coming From A Place Of Love"

Incognito: "My Actions Were Coming From A Place Of Love"
http://isbigbrotherwatchingyou.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/11/26c03__p-89EKCgBk8MZdE.gif

In his first interview since the Miami Dolphins suspended him, Richie Incognito says his words to Jonathan Martin sound harsh, but that’s not the way he meant them.

“My actions were coming from a place of love,” he told Fox NFL Sunday. “No matter how bad and how vulgar it sounds, that’s how we communicate, that’s how our friendship was, and those are the facts and that’s what I’m accountable for.”

Incognito if you remember was suspended indefinitely for allegedly sending threatening messages that included racial slurs to Martin, his younger teammate, who left the NFL after he faced harassment that his lawyer said went “beyond locker-room hazing.”

The story surfaced a conversation about bullying, race and the culture inside the NFL.

Incognito told Fox that he was “not a racist” and that this has nothing to do with bullying.

“This is an issue of my and Jon’s relationship, where I’ve taken stuff too far and I didn’t know it was hurting him,” Incognito said.

What’s more. Incognito said he texted with Jon after the news broke and Jon allegedly told him that he didn’t blame Incognito and the Dolphins players instead “it’s just the culture around football and the locker room got to me a little.”

“When I see that voicemail, when I see those words come up across the screen, I’m embarrassed by it,” Incognito said. “I’m embarrassed by my actions.
