Russian power play: Crimea vote on joining Russia

(AP) — Ukraine lurched toward breakup Thursday when lawmakers in Crimea unanimously declared they wanted to join Russia and would put the decision to voters in 10 days — and Russian lawmakers pushed a bill to facilitate a handover. President Barack Obama condemned the moves and the West answered with the first real sanctions against Russia.

Speaking from the White House, Obama said any decisions on the future of Crimea, a pro-Russian area of Ukraine, must include the country’s new government.

“The proposed referendum on the future of Crimea would violate the constitution and violate international law,” Obama said. “We are well beyond the days when borders can be redrawn over the heads of democratic leaders.”

Russian President Vladimir Putin’s hand was almost certainly behind Thursday’s dramatic developments, but it was not clear whether he is aiming for outright annexation, or simply strengthening his hand in talks with the West.

The White House moved to impose financial sanctions and travel restrictions on opponents of Ukraine’s new government and the EU also announced limited punitive measures against Putin’s government, including the suspension of trade and visa talks. Both Washington and the EU said they were discussing further sanctions.

“I am confident that we are moving forward together, united in our determination to oppose actions that violate international law and to support the government and people of Ukraine,” Obama said.

Crimea’s parliament rammed through what amounted to a declaration of independence from Ukraine, announcing it would let the Crimean people, 60 percent of whom are ethnic Russian, decide whether they want to become part of their gigantic neighbor to the east.

“This is our response to the disorder and lawlessness in Kiev,” said Sergei Shuvainikov, a member of the legislature. “We will decide our future ourselves.”

Ukraine’s prime minister swiftly denounced the action. “This so-called referendum has no legal grounds at all,” said Arseniy Yatsenyuk. The country’s acting president, Oleksandr Turchynov, later said Ukraine would move to dissolve Crimea’s parliament, but such an action would have virtually no practical effect.

At an emergency EU summit in Brussels, EU President Herman Van Rompuy said the bloc was suspending talks with Russia on a wide-ranging economic pact and on a visa deal, and would consider further measures if Russia does not quickly open meaningful dialogue.

“Not everyone will be satisfied with the decision but I should say that we did much more together than one could have expected several hours ago,” said Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk.

In Moscow, a prominent member of Russia’s parliament, Sergei Mironov, said he had introduced a bill to simplify the procedure for Crimea to join Russia and it could be passed as soon as next week. Another senior lawmaker, Leonid Slutsky, said the parliament could consider such a motion after the referendum.

On Tuesday, Putin said Russia had no intention of annexing Crimea, while insisting its population has the right to determine the region’s status in a referendum. A popular vote would give Putin a democratic fig-leaf for what would effectively be a formal takeover — although it was too early to tell whether such a move would actually go forward. The Russian president called a meeting of his Security Council on Thursday to discuss Ukraine.

For Putin, Crimea would be a dazzling acquisition, and help cement his authority with a Russian citizenry that has in recent years shown signs of restiveness and still resents the loss of the sprawling empire Moscow ruled in Soviet times. The peninsula was once Russia’s imperial crown jewel, a lush land seized by Catherine the Great in the 18th century that evokes Russia’s claim to greatness as a world power.

A referendum had previously been scheduled in Crimea on March 30, but the question to be put to voters was whether their region should enjoy “state autonomy” within Ukraine.

The city legislature in Sevastopol, the Crimean port that hosts Russia’s naval base, voted late Thursday to join the referendum. The vote was necessary because the city has an autonomous status making it separate from the rest of Crimea.

Crimea’s new leader has said pro-Russian forces numbering more than 11,000 now control all access to the peninsula in the Black Sea and have blockaded all military bases that have not yet surrendered.

In Washington, Obama sought to follow through on a threat that there will be “costs” to Russia’s actions in Ukraine — moving to enact new visa restrictions on an unspecified and unidentified number of people and entities that the U.S. accused of threatening Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial borders. The restrictions were unlikely to directly target Putin.

Obama also signed an executive order that will allow the U.S. to levy financial sanctions.

In a statement, the White House said the penalties would target “those who are most directly involved in destabilizing Ukraine, including the military intervention in Crimea, and does not preclude further steps should the situation deteriorate.”

The U.S. measures were announced as Secretary of State John Kerry headed into a meeting with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov in Rome on the sidelines of a diplomatic forum about Libya.

The Europeans appeared divided between nations close to Russia’s borders, which want the bloc to stand up to Moscow, and some Western economic powerhouses — notably Germany — that were taking a more dovish line.

EU economic sanctions against Russia could prove painful for Europe as well — since Russia could hit back by turning off the taps to natural gas that is an urgent need for many European countries, including regional giant Germany.

The fallout for Europe from any action targeting influential Russian oligarchs or corporations would also be great. Russian investors hold assets worth billions in European banks, particularly in Britain — which is reluctant to undermine its massive financial services industry. Russia, the EU’s third biggest trading partner, bought $ 170 billion in European machinery, cars and other exports in 2012.

Yatsenyuk, in Brussels to meet with EU leaders, said Russia is continuing to stir up trouble.

“We ask Russia to respond whether they are ready to preserve peace and stability in Europe or (whether) they are ready to instigate another provocation and another tension in our bilateral and multilateral relations,” Yatsenyuk said.

In Simferopol, Crimea’s capital, about 50 people rallied outside the local parliament Thursday morning waving Russian and Crimean flags. Among the posters they held was one that said “Russia, defend us from genocide.”

“Only Russia can give us a peaceful life,” said 35-year-old Igor Urbansky, one of the rally particants. “We are tired of revolutions, maidans and conflicts and we want to live peacefully in Russia.”

Maidan is the name of the downtown square in Kiev where tens of thousands of protesters contested the rule of Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych, who fled to Russia.

Not all in this city favored the lawmakers’ vote to secede from Ukraine.

“This is crazy. Crimea has become Putin’s puppet,” said Viktor Gordiyenko, 46. “A referendum at gunpoint of Russia weapons is just a decoration for Putin’s show. A decision on occupation has already been made.”

Svetlana Savchenko, a Crimean lawmaker, said the choice she and her fellow deputies took in favor of joining Russia will force Moscow to make a decision.

“Now the Russian Federation must begin a procedure — will it take us in or not?” she said.

Rustam Temirgaliev, first vice premier of the Crimean government, said preparations are underway already to bring Crimea into Russia’s “ruble zone.”

“At the present moment, a large, important group of specialists from Russia is at work, preparing to assure the entry of Crimea into the Russian Federation,” Temirgaliev said.

At the Ukrainian naval base in Novo-Ozerne, the inlet leading to the Black Sea was blocked Thursday by a partially submerged Russian naval vessel, preventing two Ukrainian ships from leaving port. Ukrainian sailors said the Russians had blown up the decommissioned vessel overnight.

Turmoil was brewing elsewhere in the Russian-dominated eastern half of Ukraine.

Clashes between protesters and police broke out early Thursday in the ethnic Russian stronghold of Donetsk as police cleared demonstrators from the regional administration center. The Ukrainian flag once again was hoisted over the building, and about 100 Ukrainian Interior troops could be seen in and around it. Two large trucks were parked in front to block the approach.

The Pentagon said Thursday that six U.S. F-15 fighter jets arrived in Lithuania to boost air patrols over the Baltics as the Ukraine crisis continued. A U.S. warship was also now in the Black Sea for long-planned exercises.

‘Orthodox activists’ hijack controversial theater play for ‘blasphemy’

A vortex of corrupt politicians, prostitutes and a gay clergy-arch-devil in an iconic Moscow theater came to a halt as self-proclaimed Christian activists climbed the stage to denounce the “sodomy”. Some, however, took the stunt as part of the show.

The second act of the provocative play An Ideal Husband staged at the Chekhov Moscow Art Theater by controversial Russian director, Konstantin Bogomolov, ends with a scene of a scantily clad woman rising above the stage with her arms spread, as “Dorian Gray” passionately dances with an apparently homosexual “priest-turned-Mephistopheles.” The priest then kneels and prays at the soaring woman.

Then, seemingly in line with this cacophony of images, several people calling themselves Orthodox Christian “activists” took to the stage and shouted out their condemnation of the play. They said the episode, as well as other provocative scenes, blatantly mocks the crucifix and Jesus Christ himself.

A message posted on the official Facebook page of the Chekhov Moscow Art Theater soon after the incident made it clear the action was an “attempt to disrupt the play.”

“At the end of the second act, the infamous provocateur Enteo came on stage with a support team. They shouted: “How can you tolerate the mockery of our faith? Why do you hate Christ so much, while he was crucified for us,” the message quoted the “activists” as saying, identifying the group’s leader as Dmitriy ‘Enteo’ Tsorionov.

Scuffles ensued at the front of the stage as the theatre’s staff, scene-shifters and theatre-goers attempted to pull of the “provocateurs” off the stage, the theater said, adding that the third act of the play started after ten minutes and went smoothly.

Dmitriy Enteo earned his public fame on the back of several stunts directed at the Pussy Riot punk band and their supporters, and has said that he consciously uses the same “art performance aesthetic”, but for opposite aims.

Enteo had a different account of the incident, blasting the play as “hideous blasphemy,” “sodomy” and “infernal raving” on his Vkontakte page. He said that their action was peaceful, and they did not resist the “security guards,” who started “beating” them. They simply kept appealing to the audience and saying that mocking God is “unacceptable.” Some of the people supported their “cause” with applause, other sympathizers got up and left the play, Enteo claimed.

But some of the theater-goers present at the time of the stunt said in comments on the theater’s Facebook page that the people who got on stage behaved like blatant hooligans, with a female activist shouting hysterically and then throwing and damaging stage microphones.

A scene from

Ironically, many in the audience took the antics happening on stage for part of the already unorthodox comedy, a witness told RIA Novosti. The “activists” seemed to fit the bizarre mix of characters from several works of Oscar Wilde, Anton Chekhov, Goethe and the postmodern Russian dramatist, Vladimir Sorokin, who all appeared in a contemporary setting.

Only several minutes after the initial applause given as they thought to cunning improvisation, did the audience realize it was indeed an attempt to disrupt the play. While some chose to leave, most others were hooked by the farcical antics of the stunt, and stayed until the end of the play.

This theater action is the latest in a series of attempts by self-proclaimed Orthodox Christian activists to forcefully protest against ideas they consider offensive to their beliefs. Previous incidents included a “missionary flashmob” in Moscow’s Darwin museum, “an action of the Orthodox inquisition” at an office of a Russian opposition party, and assaults on LGBT activists and Pussy Riot supporters.

Recently, one such activist was handed a one-year suspended sentence for firing eye irritant at a gay rights campaigner during a rally in May, but most others, including Enteo, have never been held accountable.
Director Bogomolov later reacted to the incident during the play on his Facebook page only by saying that it was not worth doing a favor of “advertising for this poor fool.”

Known for his controversial plays, loosely based on the works of renowned authors, but showing the problems of modern society in a grotesque and provocative manner, Bogomolov earlier described An Ideal Husband as a “trash comedy” depicting the “trash” realities of present-day Russia.

Russian theatre lovers are divided over Bogomolov’s plays, and particularly over his staging of several avant-garde pieces in the iconic Chekhov Moscow Art Theater. Controversy over his latest play based on Fyodor Dostoevsky’s novel, The Brothers Karamazov, prompted Bogomolov to announce he is leaving the theater after disagreeing to make unspecified changes to the play.

Play this: "Star Wars" goes 8-bit with "Tiny Death Star"

Building a galactic empire takes a lot of money, and Star Wars: Tiny Death Star is all about raking in those sweet, sweet credits. Much like the Angry Birds Star Wars series, Tiny Death Star simply takes an existing mobile hit and adds some flavor from a galaxy far, far away — in this case it’s based on Nimblebit’s devilishly addictive Tiny Tower. And the two games play largely the same. On the left side of the screen is an elevator where a regular stream of citizens will come into your Death Star looking for somewhere to live or a place to spend some money, and on the right is your actual tower, which you can fill with apartments and all kinds of businesses.

People will come and go even if you’re not playing, but you’ll need to return regularly to tend to the details, like stocking businesses with goods and giving new citizens jobs. It’s not exactly challenging, but there’s a strange thrill in seeing your tower expand. Almost every aspect of the game has a built-in timer, so you’ll need to wait for events to complete or, if you’re feeling flush, spend real cash to speed the process up.

It’s best enjoyed for a few minutes at a time

Just like Tiny Tower, Tiny Death Star is best enjoyed when you pop in for a few minutes at a time, as opposed to a lengthy single sitting. It also adds a few, minor Star Wars-themed gameplay twists. You’ll be able to build “imperial” levels, which let you play the role of the bad guy by interrogating rebels and other dastardly deeds. There are also random events that will have you searching for spies or tending to bounty hunters; they’re minor additions, but add to the Star Wars feel.

The biggest draw, though, is the presentation. In a lot of ways Tiny Death Star is just a reskinned version of Tiny Tower, but that’s actually a good thing. The pixel art renditions of familiar Star Wars characters are downright adorable, and the elevator music-style soundtrack lets you listen to John Williams’ iconic score in a whole new way. From the tongue-in-cheek dialog to the hilarious animated cut scenes, Tiny Death Star is filled with fan service for Star Wars nerds. And the more you play, the more you’ll see. You can also play it on just about any device at launch, as it’s available on iOS, Android, and Windows Phone. Check it out for free at the source links below.

‘Shepherd of the Hills’ play to close

The longtime Branson production News-Leader

A longtime Ozarks tradition is taking a final bow.

The Shepherd of the Hills Outdoor Theatre in Branson announced it will close on Oct. 19.

For 54 years, Harold Bell Wright’s epic story “Shepherd of the Hills” was performed.

“Rising costs in insurance and production, the new health care mandate and declining crowds are to blame,” read a press release posted Wednesday on the company’s Facebook page. “It is with a very heavy heart that we make this difficult announcement,” said Gary and Pat Snadon, owners of the park, said in a press release. “We have had an incredible run.”

Linda Michael of Patton, Mo., has been back several times since she first saw it in 1992.

“We are going back and it just so happened it’s the last weekend they are supposed to be open. I am going to tell my husband so we can take our youngest. We took our oldest,” Michael said.

Dustina Reasons as Sammy and Lee Berhorest as Young Matt perform a scene at the Shepherd of the Hills Outdoor Theatre in 2006. Many local performers have participated in the show. The show experienced its heyday in the 1970s and 1980s when 2,000 people a night flocked to sold-out performances.

It was still selling out when Michael Frizell played the character Ollie Stewart in 1988.

Today he director of Student Learning Service at Missouri State University, but back then he was a student at College of the Ozarks looking for a summer job. He fell in love with it and stayed on until 1996.

The show requires more than 80 actors and actresses, 40 horses, a flock of sheep, several guns and rifles, a burning log cabin, and a vintage 1908 DeWitt automobile.

But there is more to Shepherd of the Hills than the outdoor theater, and those aspects will remain open: The Shepherd of the Hills Homestead will be preserved and maintained as a historical landmark. Tours of Old Matt’s Cabin, which is on the National Historic Registry, will be available during summer months.

Inspiration Tower and the Vigilante Extreme ZipRider will be open all year. The annual car show will continue. And during November and December, the annual Trail of Lights Drive-Thru and Christmas on the Trail Chuckwagon Dinner Show will still operate.

Since the first season, the outdoor drama says it has entertained millions of Branson visitors.

Frizell said when he was employed there, he worried the show would one day end because of the declining interest in Harold Bell Wright’s story and aging crowds.

Michael was disappointed in the news because she always enjoyed the show.

“It’s good clean fun so you don’t have to worry about what’s being said if you have kids with you,” she said. “ It’s just beautiful scenery there. You get out of the hustle and bustle of every day life and go there and it’s laid back and beautiful. I hope they reconsider.”

Did Putin Quietly Play the Debt Card Over Syria?

They are living beyond their means and shifting a part of the weight of their problems to the world economy. They are living like parasites off the global economy and their monopoly of the dollar. If [in America] there is a systemic malfunction, this will affect everyone. Countries like Russia and China hold a significant part of their reserves in American securities. There should be other reserve currencies.” – Vladimir Putin in 2011

While I hate to give such praise to a foreign leader, Putin has undoubtedly run rings around the moribund and bureaucratic incompetence of the Laurel and Hardy-style Obama and Kerry team on Syria. Putin diplomatically has the swiftness and stealth of the South’s Stonewall Jackson and Germany’s Erwin Rommel, probably the two greatest military commanders in world history.

What Really Happened on the Night of Friday, August 30th?

“At one point last week in the charade known as ‘the Syria peace negotiations’, John Kerry, the US Secretary of State, announced solemnly, ‘This is not a game.’ Well, he was wrong there. This certainly is a game: the trouble is that Barack Obama is trying to pretend that it’s chess, while Vladimir Putin plays hard-faced poker.” – Janet Daley

My question is: What motivated the sudden, overnight change of mind by Obama himself seemingly only hours away from a military strike on al Assad and Syria? It appears to have caught his advisors and the military totally by surprise.

Yes, thanks to the Internet Reformation, the administration was not able to manipulate public opinion and the people and Congress were increasingly opposed to the minimal military action, though this has never stopped a Washington attack before. Even the powerful American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC) efforts came to naught and the US backed down from the attack.

I believe both Russia and China covertly played the Treasury debt card in order to protect their client states, Syria and Iran, from the impending US invasion. An attack would undoubtedly have escalated with troops on the ground, opening the way for a land assault against Iran, the ultimate real target. After all, the gas pipeline for Washington’s Sunni client states that even offering to pay for the military action is far less important than taking Iran down.

But Putin Always Wins

“Though fraud in all other actions be odious, yet in matters of war it is laudable and glorious, and he who overcomes his enemies by stratagem is as much to be praised as he who overcomes them by force.” – Niccolo Machiavelli

If you follow Putin’s career it is apparent that he overcomes difficulties often through strategy rather than direct force. I’ll bet he has Machiavelli’s The Prince in his personal library. Russia, China and Putin had a lot to lose if the US had engaged and been drawn into occupying Syria proper.

  • First, Iran would have been open for land invasion, as northern Iraq is under Kurdish control and the Kurds would have welcomed a US ground attack targeting Tabriz and northern Iran, freeing their brother Kurds there and helping to expand and create ultimately a Kurdistan state.

  • Second, this would put the American forces on the border of the former Soviet republics of Azerbaijan and Armenia, thus threatening Russian influence in the area.

  • Third, unlike the United States with hundreds of bases around the world, Russia has only one base outside the old Soviet republics and sphere of influence and this is a naval base in Tartus, Syria. The loss of this base would result in a tremendous decline of prestige and influence in the Arab world, a region where both Russia and China seek to gain influence to counter the American occupation and control of the oil and gas resources there.

My Scenario

“At this point, China owns approximately 1.275 trillion dollars of our debt, and Russia owns approximately 138 billion dollars of our debt.” – Michael Snyder

Remember, national leaders never threaten other nations or leaders directly because all major political leaders and politicians require plausible deniability if things go wrong. They need the ability to deny blame, knowledge and responsibility for a failure but still have the opportunity to get the job done and when helpful take credit for a success or victory. Giving the responsibility for communication or action to a lower level bureaucracy or individual where instructions are verbal or inaccessible takes care of the problem.

Although I have no proof, I believe it is likely that financial intermediaries or lower level central banking contacts dropped the hint to their American counterparts that China and Russia were likely to begin liquidating Treasury obligations should Washington go ahead with it’s planned military adventure against Syria.

This is best explained in Michael Snyder’s September 6 article at The Economic Collapse, “Who Is Going To Buy Our Debt If This War Causes China, Russia And The Rest Of The World To Turn On Us?”

I would suggest that Putin’s apparent last minute Chemical Weapons “deal” was just a face-saving gift for the Obama Administration in order to provide cover and a reasonable excuse for the sudden change of orders to halt the Syria attack. I’ll also bet that this deal had been worked out long before it was offered to Obama. I will discuss more about Putin’s Debt Card at the upcoming High Alert Investment Conference in October (see highalertconference.com).

Putin wins again. He gets the credit for stopping the US; Russia, as usual, never fires a shot and Washington retreats. You’ll know whether I’m right on Putin playing the debt card if on occasion, with very important questions on global affairs and diplomacy, America begins to slowly retreat – as do all empires when they overreach economically and begin to decline militarily.

I’m sure Putin also reads Sun Tzu and his ancient Chinese military treatise, The Art of War, so read the two quotes below and tell me what you think.

“The supreme art of war is to subdue the enemy without fighting.”

“Build your opponent a golden bridge to retreat across.”

In closing, a word of advice to Obama and the elites of both the Democrat and Republican parties: You play poker with Vladimir Putin at your peril and that of our nation.

What Role Should the U.S. Play in the Middle East?

Chairman of the Joint Chiefs General Martin E. Dempsey, John Kerry, Secretary of State, and Chuck Hagel, Secretary of Defense, present the administration’s case for U.S. military action against Syria. (Reuters)

On Tuesday evening, President Barack Obama boarded Air Force One, departed for Sweden and left behind a looming political disaster. Despite the endorsement of Republican and Democratic House leaders, many members of Congress remain deeply skeptical about the president’s proposal to carry out cruise missile strikes in Syria. And they should be.

A few dozen missile strikes will not alter the military balance in Syria’s civil war. They will not punish Syrian President Bashar al-Assad to the point where it moves him to the bargaining table. The Syrian autocrat is engaged in a ruthless fight for survival. Obama is not. As long as that dynamic continues, limited military action will have a limited impact.

Tomahawk cruise missiles are the latest wonder weapon to be used to lull Americans into thinking they can have war without cost. (For now, they’ve replaced drones.) In a sign of just how limited the American effort will be, the Senate Foreign Relations Committee drafted a resolution Tuesday night that would limit any military action to sixty days, with one thirty day extension.

Under the best-case scenario outlined by administration officials, American destroyers will lob a few dozen missiles at Syria late next week. Washington’s credibility will be magically restored. And there will be little pain, risk or casualties for Americans.

That is wishful thinking.

At the same time, opponents of military action on the left and right argue that we can ignore what is happening in Syria. The Sunnis who make up 70 percent of Syria’s population and their Gulf backers will give up, some argue. Or if Assad wins, a magnanimous Hezbollah and Iran will not be emboldened by his successful use of chemical weapons.

In truth, Syria is on a path to become a failed state split between Sarin-wielding Alawites and Sunni jihadists. The largest refugee crisis in the world since Vietnam will destabilize Lebanon, Jordan and Turkey and potentially ignite a regional war. And America’s true red lines — Israel’s security and the steady flow of Middle Eastern oil into the global economy — will be threatened.

A gaping hole in the president’s response to Syria is that it does not grapple with the core question: what should America’s role in the Middle East be? Defender of chemical weapons bans? Defender of oil flows? Defender of Israel and no one else?

Political realities, of course, limit what type of military action Obama can propose. War weary Americans want no part of another conflict in the Middle East. But they deserve a realistic, clear-eyed strategy in the region. President George W. Bush’s invasion-centric approach to countering militancy clearly failed. But Obama’s hands-off approach is not working either.

For six years, Obama has successfully struck a middle ground in foreign policy, using drone strikes and a time-limited troop surge in Afghanistan to appear tough but anti-war. His plan to strike Syria could be the straw that breaks the back of Obama’s split-the-difference approach.

Barring a major personal lobbying effort by the president, a skeptical House is likely to reject Obama’s request for an authorization. An ABC News poll released Tuesday found that 60 percent of Americans oppose a unilateral U.S. missile strike on Syria.

To be fair, an array of factors beyond Obama’s control have come together to turn Syria into the administration’s perfect storm. Assad’s depravity, Russian President Vladimir Putin’s cynicism and a fractious Syrian opposition make up a rogue’s gallery of stubborn opponents and unappealing allies. And the war in Iraq – which Obama opposed – has created sweeping isolationism.

Obama also has himself to blame. Traits that have been steadily building in his administration for the last several years have made Syria harder to solve.

First, it is unclear how deeply Obama, in fact, wants to act in Syria. A famously detached president seems half-engaged. Instead of Obama making impassioned speeches last week to the American people, Secretary of State John Kerry did. After making a surprise announcement on Saturday that he would seek a congressional authorization to strike Syria, Obama went golfing.

Tracking the president’s personal involvement in the debate ahead will show his true intent. If Kerry, Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel and others remain the primary administration voices lobbying Congress, it is a sign of Obama’s ambivalence.

In an ominous sign for the White House, opposition to the strikes is growing on the far right and left. Lead by Senators Rand Paul and Ted Cruz, libertarians say no vital U.S. interests are at stake in Syria. Citing Iraq, liberals who enjoy generous security and rights at home blithely dismiss the idea of enforcing international norms abroad.

As historian Douglas Brinkley noted, one of the oddest things about the American response to Assad’s chemical weapons attack is the lack of moral outrage. Beyond Kerry, few Americans have expressed anger at a barbaric attack that killed 1,400 people, including 400 children. Yes, we must not repeat the mistakes of Iraq. But that does not absolve us from seriously grappling with the nightmarish scenarios that are emerging in the Middle East.

There are no quick or easy solutions in Syria. Even if the U.S. acts, it will not stabilize the country. But we need a comprehensive strategy.

At this point, the best of several bad options is to mount extensive U.S. strikes, arm the moderate opposition and try to negotiate a political settlement with Russia and Iran. A Tomahawk-created peace is a fantasy.

August can play havoc with a president"s vacation

EDGARTOWN, Massachusetts | Fri Aug 16, 2013 2:33pm EDT

EDGARTOWN, Massachusetts (Reuters) – August has a way of interfering with a U.S. president’s best-laid plans for vacation. Just ask Barack Obama. Or Bill Clinton. Or either of the presidents named Bush.

Obama, determined to take a week off from his typically grinding schedule, interrupted his holiday briefly on Thursday to condemn the killing of hundreds of people in a violent crackdown on demonstrators by Egypt’s military government.

But at the risk of a new round of criticism, Obama promptly went on to play golf after the morning statement.

On Friday, after he was briefed on Egypt by his national security adviser, Susan Rice, he was out riding bikes with his wife Michelle and two daughters.

The message to be gleaned? He will not be held hostage by world events.

It is a maxim of presidential power that the commander-in-chief is never really off. The nuclear launch codes carried by a military aide are always close at hand. Modern technology allows the president to work anywhere.

But when world events intervene, presidents must draw a careful line. They must appear confident, engaged and responsive, and not seem to be overwhelmed by crises.

August is not always kind to the president.

George W. Bush provided the type of image that presidents want to avoid when, in August 2002 while vacationing in Kennebunkport, Maine, he opted to react to a suicide bombing in Israel while at the first tee box at Cape Arundel golf course.

“I call upon all nations to do everything they can to stop these terrorist killers. Thank you. Now, watch this drive,” said Bush, who proceeded to swing away.

The image did not help a president who had received high marks months earlier for his response to the September 11, 2001, attacks, only to see them dissipate when the Iraq war turned unpopular after the 2003 invasion. With troops in harm’s way, he avoided playing golf and took up mountain biking.

His father, President George H.W. Bush, faithfully traveled to his Walker’s Point oceanfront home in Kennebunkport, where he confronted some sort of August vacation challenge nearly every year of his term from 1989 to 1993.

“What is it about August?” he once asked reporters.

Aboard his boat offshore Walker’s Point, Bush worked on the war plan to repel Iraq’s August 1990 invasion of Kuwait and adjust U.S. policy toward a “new world order” while fishing with Brent Scowcroft, his national security adviser.

Being able to deliver good news to Americans helps a vacationing president avoid bad optics.

CHANGE THE SUBJECT

In August of 1991, the elder Bush was again out on his boat when he got the word to come back and take a call from Soviet President Mikhail Gorbachev, who had just survived a short coup.

Wearing a multi-colored wind jacket that would horrify modern-day image meisters, Bush appeared before the press outside a weather-beaten building at Walker’s Point to tell the world what had happened.

“It’s been an emotional day,” he said.

Sometimes a world crisis can change the subject.

It was in August 1998 that President Bill Clinton was on vacation on Martha’s Vineyard, reeling from the Monica Lewinsky scandal. On August 20, reporters were expecting him to play golf.

Instead his motorcade deposited him at the White House press filing center and he announced U.S. military strikes against “one of the most active terrorist bases in the world” in Afghanistan.

It was Americans’ first encounter with al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden. And whether intended or not, it provided an important diversion from the Lewinsky scandal.

“Now I am returning to Washington to be briefed by my national security team on the latest information,” Clinton said, before rushing back to Washington.

He then wasted little time getting back to his Martha’s Vineyard holiday.
