Autopsy Planned in Shooting of Alzheimer"s Patient

CHICKAMAUGA, Ga. — An autopsy has been scheduled for a 72-year-old Alzheimer’s patient who was shot after authorities say he wandered into a darkened yard in Georgia.

Sheriff’s officials say Ronald Westbrook had walked about three miles in sub-freezing temperatures, then knocked on 34-year-old Joe Hendrix’s door just before 4 a.m. Wednesday.

They say Hendrix went into the backyard of the home he rented in the Chickamauga area, confronted Westbrook and fired his handgun four times at the man. No charges have been filed.

Walker County Coroner W. Dewayne Wilson said Friday in a statement to The Associated Press that the autopsy is scheduled for Saturday at the Georgia Bureau of Investigation lab in Atlanta.

Walker County Sheriff Steve Wilson has said he had no doubts that Hendrix felt threatened during the encounter.

I was wondering how long until this happened. I encourage everyone to visit lemon party at least once a day so someone in a cubicle somewhere has to look at it while monitoring people’s usage.

Planned Parenthood Spends Over $1 Million on Ads Against Pro-Life Cuccinelli

Planned Parenthood Votes, a federal SuperPAC run by the nation’s biggest abortion provider, has spent nearly all of its cash on ads slamming Virginia’s pro-life Republican gubernatorial candidate, Ken Cuccinelli.

According to LifeSiteNews, Planned Parenthood Votes reported Friday that it spent nearly $ 1.1 million on a new anti-Cuccinelli ad purchase that left the SuperPAC with only $ 73,746 to pay its remaining bills totaling $ 59,919.

Cecile Richards, president of Planned Parenthood, has called Cuccinelli’s defeat her “top priority.”

Working closely with Democrat candidate Terry McAuliffe, who last week told students at George Mason University that he will be a “brick wall” against any limits on late-term abortions in Virginia, Planned Parenthood has produced ads and mailings that have characterized Cuccinelli as an extremist for his pro-life position and his determination to end public funding of the abortion giant.

Planned Parenthood’s mailings have referred to Cuccinelli as “extremely dangerous for women” because he sought restrictions on abortion-on-demand as attorney general, and for his vote, as a state senator, to overturn former Democrat Gov. Mark Warner’s veto of the partial birth abortion ban.

Cuccinelli also drafted Virginia’s parental consent law and demanded that the state’s abortion facilities meet the same health standards as other surgical centers.

Planned Parenthood has also worked with the McAuliffe campaign to launch a website entitled “Keep Ken Out,” the purpose of which is to attack Cuccinelli for his pro-life views.

Many statements on the Keep Ken Out website are purposefully misleading, at best, including one that claims, “Even contraception would be at risk in a Cuccinelli administration,” implying that Cuccinelli has already tried or plans to promote regulations to outlaw contraception.

The website also makes the statement that “access to safe and legal abortion” would be in “danger” if Cuccinelli is elected governor. While abortion in the United States is “legal,” it is arguable that the current standards are by no means “safe.” Evidence of this includes the recent murder conviction of abortionist Kermit Gosnell and a report less than two weeks ago of an abortion facility in Falls Church, Virginia that was forced to send two women to the hospital following botched abortions.

Falls Church Healthcare filed a challenge in June to Virginia’s new health and safety standards for abortion facilities. Last year’s inspection report of the facility described safety violations that included bloody, reused vacutainer holders, blood-stained walls and operating tables, and no policy for reporting patient deaths.

Marjorie Dannenfelser, president of the pro-life Susan B. Anthony List, said:

Terry McAuliffe has pledged to be a brick wall when it comes to keeping abortion facilities like Falls Church Healthcare open, no matter the cost to women’s health. McAuliffe recently claimed he would have the authority as Governor to issue a “guidance opinion” to keep these dangerous clinics running. Although no such legality exists, this was just another example of how Terry McAuliffe puts Big Abortion ahead of safety and wellbeing of Virginia women.

Dannenfelser said it is McAuliffe who is the extremist when it comes to his platform of support for unrestricted abortion–including sex selection abortions–and abortions for teenage girls without parental consent.

“Should McAuliffe be elected Governor, he would turn a blind eye to women’s safety in order to keep abortion facilities like Falls Church Healthcare in business,” she said.

Ashley McGuire and Maureen Ferguson of The Catholic Association agree that McAuliffe is the extremist on the issue of abortion.

“This week Terry McAuliffe admitted he is an extremist on abortion,” said McGuire in a statement. “His shocking support for the brutal practice of late-term abortion is a decidedly anti-woman position. Polls consistently show that women want less abortion, not more, and support bans on late-term abortion.”

Ferguson said McAuliffe has “proven once and for all that he is an extremist, out of touch with overwhelming majorities of Americans who do not support late-term abortion.”

While Planned Parenthood and McAuliffe may need to make abortion their “top priority” in order to succeed, Cuccinelli has been focused on how he will lead Virginia as governor in the age of ObamaCare.

Cuccinelli, who was the first state attorney general to challenge ObamaCare’s constitutionality, gave the weekly Republican address this week, calling the ObamaCare rollout “a national embarrassment.”

(AP) — The man U.S. Navy SEALs tried to take down in Somalia over the weekend was a Kenyan who had plotted to attack his country’s parliament building and the United Nations headquarters in Nairobi, according to a Kenyan government intelligence report.

The pre-dawn, seaside SEAL raid on Saturday targeted Abdulkadir Mohamed Abdulkadir, who is also known as Ikrima, a U.S. official told The Associated Press. The U.S. troops are not believed to have captured or killed their target. The official insisted on anonymity because he wasn’t authorized to release the information

In the internal report by Kenya’s National Intelligence Service, Abdulkadir is listed as the lead planner of a plot sanctioned by al-Qaida’s core leadership in Pakistan to carry out multiple attacks in Kenya in late 2011 and early 2012. The AP has previously reported that those attacks, linked to the Somali Islamic extremist group al-Shabab, were disrupted.

The report, which was leaked to AP and other media in the wake of the Sept. 21 terror attack on Nairobi’s Westgate Mall that killed more than 60 people, lists Samantha Lewthwaite — a Briton known in British media as the “White Widow” — as one of several “key actors” in the plot to attack Parliament buildings, the U.N. Office in Nairobi, Kenyan Defense Forces camps and other targets. The plotters also intended to assassinate top Kenyan political and security officials, the report said.

Police disrupted that plot. Lewthwaite, who was married to one of the suicide bombers in the 2005 attack on London’s transit system, escaped capture when she produced a fraudulently obtained South African passport in another person’s name. Late last month Interpol, acting on a request from Kenya, issued an arrest notice for Lewthwaite.

The National Intelligence Service report, in an entry dated exactly one year before the Sept. 21 mall attack, said al-Shabab operatives were in Nairobi “and are planning to mount suicide attacks on undisclosed date, targeting Westgate Mall and Holy Family Basilica.” Two suspects were believed in possession of suicide vests, grenades and AK-47 assault rifles, the report said.

The report makes no mention of Abdulkadir in relation to the attack on Westgate Mall.

The men who attacked the mall last month and held off besieging Kenyan troops for several days were armed with grenades and AK-47s, but apparently had no suicide vests. It was unclear if one planned attack on the mall was foiled and then carried out again or if it was merely postponed for a year by al-Shabab, which claimed responsibility for the carnage.

The internal document shows that Kenyan intelligence officers have detailed information about plots and individuals tasked with carrying them out, and that the spy handlers face a continuous threat. Other targeted sites included the Hilton Hotel, the Yaya shopping mall, the office of the prime minister, and possibly the embassies of the United States — which was blown up by al-Qaida in 1998 — and of Britain and Israel.

The SEAL raid in Somalia was only one of two anti-terror missions by U.S. forces in Africa over the weekend. In Libya on Saturday, the U.S. Army’s Delta Force captured Nazih Abdul-Hamed al-Ruqai, known by his alias Anas al-Libi, an al-Qaida leader linked to the 1998 American Embassy bombings in Kenya and Tanzania.

That raid prompted a warning Monday from a group of Libyan Islamic extremists who vowed to avenge al-Libi’s capture.

In a statement posted on a militant website Monday, “The Revolutionaries of Benghazi, al-Bayda and Darna” denounced the kidnapping, saying “this shameful act will cost the Libyan government a lot.”

The cities of Benghazi, Bayda and Darna are strongholds of Islamic extremists who are carrying out political assassinations targeting political activists, judges and members of security agencies.

“We owe it to God to fight whoever betrayed his country and involved in this conspiracy,” the group said.

U.S. Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel said Sunday that al-Libi was in U.S. custody. A U.S. official familiar with the case said later that al-Libi was taken aboard a U.S. warship for questioning. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to release details.

The FBI and CIA had been tracking Abu Anas al-Libi for years, said two former U.S. intelligence officials who spoke on condition of anonymity because they weren’t authorized to speak about the case.

One of the former officials said that al-Libi had been living in Pakistan before he returned to Libya before Moammar Gadhafi’s government fell. He went back to Africa to be reunited with his family.

Al-Libi, the former official said, and his network of associates had been involved in battling Gadhafi’s forces.

Once the fighting ended, the U.S. intelligence community began focusing on trying to capture al-Libi, the official said, adding that the U.S. Army’s Delta Force worked with local Libyans to apprehend al-Libi. One of the New York FBI’s counterterrorism squads — CT-6— that focuses on Africa played a significant role in the arrest of al-Libi.

It’s unclear when al-Libi will be brought back to New York to face terrorism charges.

U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry on Monday defended the capture of al-Libi, saying complaints about the operation from Libya and others are unfounded. Kerry said the suspect was a “legal and appropriate target” for the U.S. military and will face justice in a court of law. Kerry added it was important not to “sympathize” with wanted terrorists.

“I hope the perception is in the world that people who commit acts of terror and who have been appropriately indicted by courts of law, by the legal process, will know that United States of America is going to do anything in its power that is legal and appropriate in order to enforce the law and to protect our security,” Kerry told reporters after meeting with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov on the sidelines of an Asia-Pacific economic conference in Bali, Indonesia.

“Members of al-Qaida and other terrorist organizations literally can run but they can’t hide,” he added.

UN weapons inspectors leave Syria earlier than planned

The Telegraph
August 31, 2013

The 13 inspectors, led by Ake Sellstrom, brought forward their departure from 7am on Saturday to 4am, despite travel being considered dangerous around that time.

Their departure has opened a window for a possible US strike after President Barack Obama on Friday gave his clearest indication yet that a military intervention was imminent.

He said his administration was looking at the possibility of a “limited, narrow act”, while stressing no final decision had been taken on whether to unleash military strikes against Bashar al-Assad’s regime.

Israel seeks to negotiate on planned EU sanctions

JERUSALEM | Fri Aug 9, 2013 5:51am EDT

JERUSALEM (Reuters) – Israel appealed to the European Union on Friday to rethink planned sanctions against its organizations in the occupied territories and called for talks, a shift in tone from previous Israeli anger and retaliatory measures.

Under guidelines adopted by the executive European Commission in June, Israeli “entities” operating in the West Bank and East Jerusalem will not be eligible for EU grants, prizes or loans from next year.

The move was welcomed by Palestinians, who seek statehood in those territories, and deplored by Israel, which has settled the West Bank extensively and considers all of Jerusalem its undivided capital – a status not recognized internationally.

The rightist Israeli government responded on July 26 by announcing curbs on EU aid projects for thousands of West Bank Palestinians. On Thursday it accused the Europeans of harming Israeli-Palestinian peace efforts and said it would not sign new deals with the 28-nation bloc given the planned sanctions.

But Deputy Israeli Foreign Minister Zeev Elkin took a more diplomatic tack on Friday, offering to negotiate with the European Union over the guidelines, which he described as a challenge to the Jewish state’s sovereignty.

“We are ready to hold a creative dialogue with the Europeans. We understand their position. We reject it, we don’t like it, but it’s their right when it comes to using their money,” Elkin told Israel Radio.

“We are asking the Europeans also to take into consideration the legal and other problems this creates on the Israeli side. We want to return and are ready to negotiate. But if the terms are the way they are today – unprecedented and several steps beyond anything heretofore – then we won’t be able to do it.”

PEACEMAKING

A spokesman for EU foreign policy chief Catherine Aston, Michael Mann, said Brussels was willing to clarify the new guidelines in talks with Israel.

“We stand ready to organize discussions during which such clarifications can be provided and look forward to continued successful EU-Israel cooperation, including in the area of scientific cooperation,” Mann said in a statement emailed to Reuters, acknowledging reports that talks on scientific cooperation would go ahead as planned in mid-August.

The EU move surfaced as U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry brokered a resumption of Israeli-Palestinian peace talks that had been frozen for nearly three years. The settlements remain a major subject of dispute in the negotiations, the next round of which is due to take place on Wednesday in Jerusalem.

Some 500,000 Israelis live in the West Bank and East Jerusalem among 2.5 million Palestinians. Israel captured those territories, along with the Palestinian Gaza Strip and Syrian Golan Heights, in the 1967 war. It quit Gaza in 2005 but has annexed the Golan – another territory affected by the EU move.

Most world powers deem the settlements illegal.

Elkin said the EU guidelines required Israel to take action against its own institutes with facilities in East Jerusalem.

“The dispute here is about Jerusalem and the dispute is over the question over whether the sovereign border that we laid down is in force or not,” he said. “If you begin to discriminate among various bodies located within your sovereign territory, it means you are effectively denying the sovereignty you declared.”

Elkin played down the financial impact of the planned EU sanctions – even if Israel bows out of a prestigious EU research program known as Horizon 2020.

Israel is expected to participate in the 80 billion euro research program that runs from 2014 to 2020, contributing some funding while receiving grants in return.

“It is very, very important to come and sign the deal because of the importance for the development of Israeli science but the financial aspect is certainly not billions of euros. It’s not even 1 billion,” Elkin said.

Rallies planned in 100 cities to urge "justice" for Trayvon Martin

  • Organizers of Saturday rallies want a federal civil rights probe in Trayvon Martin’s death

  • Obama says a civil rights case would be difficult, says he respects verdict

  • Martin’s mother to appear Saturday in New York, his father in Miami

(CNN) — More than 100 rallies are planned around the country Saturday for “National Justice for Trayvon Day.”

The Rev. Al Sharpton’s National Action Network said the goal of the rallies is to urge the Justice Department to investigate a federal civil rights prosecution in the death of Trayvon Martin.

George Zimmerman, a Hispanic man, shot the African-American teenager on February 26, 2012. He claimed self-defense, and a Florida jury acquitted him July 13. Zimmerman had a confrontation with Martin after calling police to report a suspicious person. The case became a flashpoint in debates over racial profiling.

Obama’s friend: Perspective is powerful

In New York, the rallies will be headlined by Martin’s mother, Sybrina Fulton, her son, Jahvaris Fulton, and Sharpton. Martin’s father, Tracy Martin, will appear at a rally in Miami.

President Barack Obama on Friday said it would be difficult to prove a federal civil rights case in Martin’s case, although the Justice Department is reviewing the evidence.

The president said he respects the Florida jury’s verdict, but called for more examination of racial profiling and “stand your ground” self-defense laws.
