FBI offers reward for clues in Baghdad slaying

  • Agency wants help in solving a 2009 killing in Baghdad’s Green Zone

  • Government contractor James Kitterman was found dead in car

  • He owned a construction company that employed workers from U.S., Philippines

  • FBI is offering $ 20,000

(CNN) — The FBI hopes a $ 20,000 reward will help solve the 2009 slaying of James Kitterman, a government contractor who was found dead in his car in Baghdad’s Green Zone.

Kitterman was a 60-year-old Texan who owned Peregrine Eyes, a construction company that was building a helipad at the U.S. Consulate, according to the FBI.

He was last seen alive on the evening of May 21, 2009, inside the Green Zone, a high-security district. Local security guards reported seeing Kitterman’s car leave the compound at 11 p.m. that night. His body was found the next day in the Green Zone.

Andrew Ames, a spokesman for the FBI, said Friday that “the manner in which the murder was carried out has not been released.” CNN reported in June 2009 that Kitterman was found bound, blindfolded and fatally stabbed.

His now-defunct company had about 45 employees that were primarily from the United States and Philippines, the FBI said.

The agency has distributed posters in Arabic and Tagalog announcing the award money for any information leading to the arrest of those responsible, because it believes a former employee may have some clues.

“The investigation itself has included hundreds of interviews during the past five years with potential witnesses in the U.S., Iraq, Afghanistan and the Philippines, but despite that we still need the public’s help,” the FBI said.

The reward is for information leading to the identification, arrest and conviction of the person or persons responsible for the death, the agency said.

Bill Warner, a Sarasota, Fla., private investigator, said his goal is to prompt the FBI to look into whether a serial killer is at work. scan

VICTIMOLOGY: “It’s a profile I have developed. All these missing young women, they look just like sisters,” Bill Warner said. “They all disappeared under strange circumstances, outside their apartment or house, with no break-ins, no indication of confrontation in or out of the house. They just disappear,” he said, adding a lot of them disappeared after a night of drinking. Dave Arnold, Lebanon County district attorney, said the FBI’s violence crimes unit (VICAM) already looked at Stouffer’s disappearance, compared it with missing persons cases up and down the East Coast, and didn’t find links to other cases. “It’s an interesting read, an interesting theory he has. But there are no facts to support the theory at least at this point in time,” Arnold said of Bill Warner’s blog.

Zanzibar acid attack reward offered

Zanzibar police say a reward of 10m Tanzanian shillings (£3,971, $ 6,170) has been offered for information leading to the capture of attackers who threw acid at two UK women.

The teenagers from London, Kirstie Trup and Katie Gee, had acid thrown on their faces, chests and hands as they walked in Zanzibar City on Wednesday evening.

The island’s government is putting up the reward money.

Local police said it was considered a large amount of money on Zanzibar.

The two 18-year-olds are believed to have left Tanzania on a flight to the UK on Thursday night.

They were initially taken to Tanzania’s largest city Dar es Salaam for medical treatment.

‘Unprovoked attack’

Reporting from Stone Town, the old part of Zanzibar’s capital, the BBC’s Alastair Leithead said the attackers sped away after the incident, and police do not know why the women were targeted.

Officers said it is the first time foreigners on the island have been attacked in this way.

The women’s families have said they are “extremely upset” by the “completely unprovoked attack” on their daughters.

The victims were two weeks into a three-week trip, volunteering for the charity Art in Tanzania.

Before they left Tanzania, the country’s President Jakaya Kikwete visited the women at the Aga Khan Hospital in Dar es Salaam and promised that those responsible for the “shameful” attack would be found.

The BBC’s Tulanana Bohela, in Dar es Salaam, said Islam is the main religion on Zanzibar, and in more remote parts of the island, away from tourist beaches, there are signs asking foreigners to respect the local culture and cover up.

However, most islanders depend on tourism for their livelihoods and are happy to see tourists, so there is little antagonism towards them, she said.

Family statement, read by friend Doug Morris: “We are extremely upset and distressed at this unprovoked attack”

$1.3M reward after jewel heist

An insurance company has released pictures of some of the dazzling gems stolen at gunpoint in a $ 136 million heist. NBC’s Lester Holt reports.

By Henry Austin, NBC News contributor

A $ 1.3 million reward was offered Tuesday after diamonds and jewels were stolen in what is believed to be the world’s biggest heist.

A masked gunman made off with an estimated $ 136 million worth of gems from the Carlton Intercontinental Hotel in Cannes, France, during the audacious daytime raid on July 28.

But despite a massive manhunt, French authorities have not made any arrests. SW Associates, a Paris-based loss adjuster and risk manager working for insurance firm Lloyd’s of London, is hoping a financial incentive might bring clues.

“A reward of up to 1,000,000 euros ($ 1.3 million) pro rata is offered to the first person who provides information which leads to recovery of the goods,” SW Associates said in a statement.

SW Associates managing director John Shaw told Reuters he hoped the reward was enough to encourage a witness, a person close to the robbers or someone who has been approached to buy the jewels to come forward with information.

Police keep watch outside the Carlton Hotel in the French Riviera resort of Cannes in the wake of last month’s jewel heist.

“We have to get the jewelry back first, evaluate the value of the recovered jewelry and then, once the police are satisfied we’re not about to recompense the robbers, we can arrange the payment,” he added.

French police are also continuing their hunt for the lone robber who entered through a French door at the side of the hotel.

It was not broken, so investigators are unsure if it was left open or whether the thief had cracked it open.

He then made his way to the temporary jewelry exhibit held over the summer by the prestigious Leviev diamond house, owned by Israeli billionaire Lev Leviev.

Armed with a handgun he threatened three private security guards, two vendors and a manager of the sale, before shoveling the jewels into a briefcase.

He then left with 72 pieces including rings, pendants and diamond-encrusted earings, although he dropped some of the jewelry as he made his escape.

No customers were present during the crime.

Leaving through a different French door he jumped about three feet onto the terrace next to the hotel before darting into a side street.

The incident was over in a minute.

The heist came two months after two smaller jewelry robberies hit the annual Cannes Film Festival, where many of the world’s top movie stars are lent gowns and gems to parade on the red carpets and at glamorous parties.

The crime followed recent jail escapes by members of the so-called Pink Panther gang.

It’s not the first time SW Associates has offered a huge reward for information.

In 2008, the firm offered a $ 1 million reward for information about a $ 105-million jewel heist from the Harry Winston store in Paris and recovered more than half the stolen pieces after a person came forward.
