Jumping out of a plane and into enemy territory, hanging from custom-made parachutes, lying in wait for your enemies: It’s probably the most nerve-wracking experience anyone can have – unless you’re already dead and stuffed with painkillers.

That’s essentially the situation that unfolded in Guamon Sunday, when the United States bombarded the island with 2,000 dead mice for the fourth time, all in an effort to lure in and kill off the territory’s invasive brown tree snake.

Attached to small cardboard parachutes, the dead rodents floated down over the forest canopy near Anderson Air Force Base, where they’re expected to attract brown tree snakes looking for an easy meal. As with anything that sounds too good to be true, however, the snakes are in for a rude awakening: Each mouse has been filled with acetaminophen, commonly found in Tylenol, which is deadly to the reptiles even in small doses.

“We are taking this to a new phase,” Dan Vice, an assistant state director of the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Wildlife Services, said to the Associated Press. “There really is no other place in the world with a snake problem like Guam.”

Vice also told KUAM News that the acetaminophen dosage does not pose a risk to other animals, saying that a pig or dog would be safe unless they ate at least 500 of the stuffed mice. The snakes, on the other hand, are expected to die within 72 hours of ingesting a mouse.

The brown tree snake – suspected to have arrived on the island via poorly inspected cargo shipments during the 1950s – may not be a danger to humans, but it has caused numerous problems since it established itself in Guam. As RT reported previously, the snakes have endangered or wiped out nearly all of the island’s native bird species, indirectly affecting even the local tree population that benefits from birds spreading seeds.

In addition to the toll enacted on wildlife, NBC News reported the snakes cause about 80 electrical outages a year when they slither into electrical substations. The cost of repair and lost productivity numbers around $ 4 million annually. Reports of the reptiles biting humans are also on the rise, though their venom is not lethal.

Estimates indicate that more than 2 million brown tree snakes inhabit Guam, with as many as 13,000 per square mile in some areas. While other methods have proved inadequate, U.S. officials are hoping to expand the mice-dropping program across the island if it’s deemed successful.

Containing the snakes has become a priority for Vice, who has said in the past that it’s “inevitable” the animals will eventually reach Hawaii, some 3,000 miles away from Guam, where they could inflict up to $ 2.14 billion in economic damages in addition to damaging local wildlife populations.

Despite the risks, however, the plan to “bomb” the island with dead rodents has caused a stir among animal rights activists. It has drawn condemnation from People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, which would prefer the snakes to be captured and humanely euthanized.

“Brown tree snakes did not ask to be stowaways on planes or ships and then forced to survive on a foreign island,” Martin Mersereau, director of PETA’s cruelty investigations, said in February.

“Although the snakes are considered invasive, no animal should be forced to endure cruel death,” he added.

BEIJING–China’s first aircraft carrier steered clear of the disputed Senkaku Islands now under the country’s newly designated air defense zone on the way to its maiden exercise in the high seas.

The 67,000-ton Liaoning left its home port of Qingdao, Shandong province, on Nov. 26, and entered the South China Sea through the Taiwan Strait on Nov. 28, according to the state-run Xinhua News Agency.

Observers were watching whether the ship would travel along the Chinese continent and through the Taiwan Strait or head for the Pacific Ocean across waters around Okinawa Prefecture.

If the Liaoning had passed near the Senkakus, administered by Japan as part of Okinawa but also claimed by China, it could have fueled tensions with Tokyo and Washington.

Four warships are accompanying the aircraft carrier for an extended exercise in the South China Sea, where China has territorial disputes with Vietnam and the Philippines.

“(The Liaoning’s route) has nothing to do with the regional situation,” Chinese defense ministry spokesman Yang Yujun told a news conference Nov. 28. “We ask you not to overstretch (the meaning of the route).”

Beijing’s designation of an air defense zone in the East China Sea on Nov. 23 has drawn sharp criticism from Tokyo and Washington as a unilateral attempt to undo the status quo.

U.S. bombers on Nov. 26 flew through China’s Air Defense Identification Zone without giving advance notice demanded by Chinese authorities.

According to Taiwan’s defense ministry, the Liaoning did not cross the median line between China and Taiwan when it navigated through the Taiwan Strait.

The Indian Navy has received the 44,500-ton Vikramaditya aircraft carrier at the Russian shipbuilding complex in Severodvinsk. The much awaited carrier was fully refurbished for US$ 2.3 billion, and will now become India’s game-changing flagship.

Russian deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Rogozin and Indian Defense Minister AK Antony attended the handing over ceremony at the Sevmash shipyard of the northern Arctic port city, along with other senior government and naval officials of the two countries.

During the ceremony, a Russian flag on the vessel was lowered, and the flag of the Indian Navy was raised in its place. This was followed by a traditional Indian ritual, in which a coconut was smashed against the ship’s side. The ship’s new captain, Suraj Berry, and the deputy director of Russia’s arms export agency Rosoboronexport, Igor Sevastyanov, signed the final handover papers.

Rogozin called the carrier “a mighty contribution to security of India,” adding that India remains a privileged strategic partner of Russia. The ceremony comes just two days ahead of the meeting of the Indo-Russian Inter-Governmental Commission on military-technical cooperation.

Originally commissioned in 1987 as a Soviet Kiev-class aircraft carrier, the ship was deemed too costly for the Russian military budget and was deactivated in 1996. The aircraft carrier – then called ‘Admiral Gorshkov’ – caught India’s attention, and, following years of talks, a Russian-Indian deal for the ship was signed.

In order to match the demands of the Indian Navy, the carrier had to be fully modernized and converted from a hybrid carrier/cruiser to a pure carrier with a ski-jump ramp to fit multirole MiG-29K (Fulcrum-D) fighters.

The refurbishment work, which eventually saw over 70 percent of the ship and equipment replaced, was overshadowed by several delays and cost increases, leading to a diplomatic exchange and tightening of supervision. It became apparent in the process that the Russian shipbuilders underestimated the cabling work costs, and the initial $ 974 million price tag grew to about $ 2.35 billion. Some construction flaws also had to be fixed following the 2012 tests.

The purchase of INS Vikramaditya has been crucial for the Indian Navy, as its British-made INS Viraat, originally commissioned by the UK’s Royal Navy in 1959 as HMS Hermes, has been scheduled for retirement. India’s first indigenous Vikrant-class aircraft carrier has also been experiencing delays. It was launched two years behind schedule in August, with the expected service entry date being 2018.

Now that Vikramaditya is set to be escorted from Russia’s north to the Indian Ocean, India becomes one of the few nations in the world to have more than one aircraft carrier in service – the others being the US, the UK, and Italy. With two ships of that class, India will have the capability to promptly project force on both sides of the Hindustan Peninsula in the increasingly militarized region. Previously, India’s retired carrier INS Vikrant played a key role in enforcing the naval blockade on East Pakistan during the Indo-Pakistan War of 1971.

As for Russia, which currently has one aircraft carrier (Admiral Kuznetsov), it has “no need for [another] ship of the same class,” Rogozin said on Saturday. Calling the fact of having more aircraft carriers “a geopolitical issue,” the Russian deputy prime minister stressed it is “not the issue of the country’s defense capability.” Meanwhile, Russia awaits the delivery of two Mistral-class helicopter carriers from France.

The new Indian flagship was redesigned by Russian shipbuilders to carry 16 MiG-29K fighters and up to 10 Ka-27 and Ka-31 helicopter gunships. With the ship’s length being 284 meters and her beam nearly 60 meters, INS Vikramaditya stretches to an area as large as three football fields and has 22 decks for housing more than 1,600 crew members. It has been estimated that the ship can operate up to 45 days without replenishment, while having the capability to cover 1,400 kilometers a day and maintaining a “surveillance bubble” of a 500 kilometer radius.

The US Navy has christened the first of a new class of nuclear-powered aircraft carriers, the 13-billion-dollar USS Gerald R. Ford. The ship, hailed as the most technologically advanced ever built, is expected to join the fleet in 2016.

The ship is the Navy’s first carrier designed in more than 40 years. The Ford-class aircraft carriers will replace current Nimitz class that was launched in 1972. The Ford is projected to stay in service until 2057.

The ship, named after US President Gerald Ford, was christened at the ceremony at Huntington Ingalls Newport News Shipbuilding in Newport News, Va. on Saturday. The new aircraft carrier is planned to replace the USS Enterprise (CVN-65).

The former president’s daughter, Susan Ford Bales, who was also the ship’s sponsor, performed the ceremonial breaking of a bottle of champagne on the ship’s bow in front of more than 20,000 sailors, shipbuilders and civilians.

The ceremony comes after more than 12 years of planning and construction.

“The carrier is our Navy’s most adaptable platform,” Adm. Jonathan Greenert, chief of naval operations, said, calling the Ford a “technological marvel”. “Ford will herald a new era of our carrier fleet,” he added.

Stretching 330 m (1,092 feet) long, the ship will feature a new nuclear power plant, a redesigned island, electromagnetic catapults and improved weapons movement.

The carrier will be able to carry more warplanes and launch 25 per cent more air missions per day than the current carriers. The US Navy required the carrier to support up to a maximum of 220 sorties a day in times of crisis and intense air warfare activity.

The new craft will accommodate almost 4,500 crew members, compared to the average 5,500 people operating a Nimitz class carrier, and up to 90 aircrafts along with unmanned combat air vehicles (UAVs).

The USS Gerald Ford will be equipped with two newly-designed reactors and will have 250 percent more electrical capacity than previous carriers. This will also support a cruising speed over 30 knots.

Super-expensive super-carrier

Requiring 1,000 fewer crew members and 30 per cent less maintenance over its 50-year lifespan, the Ford is said to let the US Navy save $ 4 billion.

While the Navy praises this as another significant advantage, critics say, the cost of building the ship has already skyrocketed. With the carrier now 70 per cent complete, construction costs are about 22 per cent over the over the scheduled budget.

The high price still will not guarantee that after it is commissioned in 2016 the carrier will not face “significant reliability shortfalls”, as the Government Accountability Office, an investigative arm of Congress, said in September.

This may limit the ship’s mission effectiveness and increase the government’s costs even more.

Gotta wonder what the flight attendant said afterwards….if she could still speak?

It’s a video that makes pilots cringe and prompts airline passengers to question the wisdom of flying on regional carriers. A Swiss BAe 146/Avro RJ four-engine jet made a rough landing at London City Airport, slamming onto the runway under what appear to be crosswind conditions. The 48-second video then shows the regional jet skidding and bouncing to a stop.

Good landing gear they put on that aircraft…!

At my airline we ended up having to fire a Carrier Qualified Naval Pilot due to his inability to land in a cross wind. His landings with the MD-80, even after 3 times more training were never as bad as the one in the following video!

A US watchdog has advised the Pentagon to ground plans to spend $ 780m (£513m) on 48 aircraft for the Afghan military, as their pilots lack expertise.

The planes and helicopters are intended for the Afghan Special Mission Wing (SMW), but the audit found the unit has no command structure.

Only seven Afghan pilots were trained to fly with night-vision goggles, according to the report.

It could take 10 years before the unit is self-sufficient, said the watchdog.

The audit also noted the US currently carried out most of the aircraft repair and maintenance for the Afghans.

The Special Inspector General for Afghan Reconstruction report found the Afghans could not carry out counter-militancy missions as most of the SMW’s 47 pilots could not fly at night.

The report said finding qualified candidates was difficult

The audit also cited difficulties in finding candidates who were literate and able to pass the exhaustive 18-20 month US vetting process.

“The Afghans lack the capacity – in both personnel numbers and expertise – to operate and maintain the existing and planned SMW fleets,” the report said.

As a result, the planes “could be left sitting on runways in Afghanistan, rather than supporting critical missions, resulting in waste of US funds”, the audit said.

“We maintain that moving forward with the acquisition of these aircraft is imprudent,” it added.

The Pentagon has a $ 218m contract with Nevada-based Sierra Nevada Corporation for 18 PC-12 fixed-wing aircraft and a $ 554m deal with a Russian firm, Rosoboronexport, for 30 Mi-17 helicopters, according to the audit.

The report also recommended the programme be halted until the Afghan interior and defence ministries could sign a memorandum of understanding, putting the SMW under the control of the nation’s military.

But the audit blamed the interior ministry for “resistance to surrendering authority” to the Afghan armed forces.

US defence officials said suspending the programme “would not be in our national interest”.
