Retiring House Intelligence Chair Won"t Rule Out 2016 Run

Rep. Mike Rogers (R-MI), chairman of the House Intelligence Committee, announced on Friday that he won’t seek re-election in 2014, but on Sunday he left the door open for a 2016 White House bid.

Rogers elaborated on the radio show he plans to host for Detroit station WJR on “Fox News Sunday.”

“So when someone walked in and said, ‘Hey, we’re going to give you the opportunity to have a discussion in people’s cars, living rooms and kitchen, every single day, from California to Iowa to New Hampshire to South Carolina. We think that you can change the needle on this debate,’ and I thought long and hard about it and thought, ‘You know, I think they’re right,’” Rogers said.

Host George Wallace pointed out that the congressman mentioned key GOP primary states, and asked about a potential presidential run.

“You know, Ronald Reagan back in 1980 — I don’t have to tell you — used his platform as a radio commentator to run for president. So is that a consideration for you? Are you prepared at this point to rule out any interest in 2016?” Wallace asked.

“Oh, Ronald Reagan used his platform on radio to run for president of the United States? I had no idea, Chris,” Rogers responded, smiling.

When Wallace pressed him further, Rogers didn’t reveal any concrete plans, but didn’t deny an interest in running.

“Listen, I’m going to take it where it goes,” he told Wallace. “This is a very unique opportunity that I will be able to talk about issues in ways you don’t hear on a national radio platform today, about the importance of national security, foreign policy and all of the issues facing America.”

Tsai announces bid to run for DPP chair

TAIPEI, Taiwan — The opposition Democratic Progressive Party’s (DPP) former Chairwoman Tsai Ing-wen yesterday announced her bid to run for party leadership again, vowing to restore public trust in politics in Taiwan.

Tsai said at the announcement that she decided to run despite advice from “many senior (party members) and friends” that she needs to be “protected” now and should sit out the DPP chairperson election so as to focus on the 2016 presidential election. “While I thank people for their advice, I have to say I am a mature political figure. I don’t need to be protected,” Tsai said.

While Tsai stressed that she is not discrediting anybody in her decision to join the race, she expressed her feeling that Taiwan has been stuck in a quagmire and the nation has been “collapsing” over the past two years. Incumbent DPP leader Su Tseng-chang, Tsai’s major competitor for the top opposition spot, assumed his position two years ago after Tsai was defeated by President Ma Ying-jeou in the 2012 presidential election and resigned as the DPP’s chairwoman.

Tsai pointed out that the party and Taiwan’s society need to “take a step forward” or be “eliminated” by the world. Electoral victories, while important, must not be built “on the back of disappointments with the current administration, but on the expectations and hope that the public has of the DPP,” she said at a press conference to declare her candidacy. The DPP therefore has to boldly embark on a transformation, said Tsai.

“My decision to run for party chairperson is to restore public trust in politics, and to lead them to place their hope for themselves, their family, society and country back in the DPP,” said Tsai in an English press release from her office.

By making the announcement, Tsai, 57, pitted herself against incumbent Su, 66. Both are said to be interested in running for president in 2016. Another former party boss, Frank Hsieh, has also announced his bid for the post. Hsieh, also a former presidential candidate, said that the next DPP chair should not join the 2016 presidential election in order to stay focused on leading the party in the election campaigns.

The party election will be held on May 25.

In the morning press conference, Tsai did not address how she would handle Taiwan’s delicate relationship with China or make specific proposals on how to spur Taiwan’s slow-growing economy.

On President’s Day, DNC Vice Chair Encourages Obama to Act as Dictator

Vice Chair’s statement represents the very danger that George Washington warned us about

The Vice Chairperson of the Democratic National Committee encouraged President Obama to “move forward” and practically act as a dictator today while Congress is in recess.

In her tweet this morning, Donna Brazile undoubtedly suggested that the president use his “pen and his phone” to sign executive orders which unconstitutionally bypass Congress.

Americans responded to her statement with complete disgust.

“So President’s Day is when we all line up to make our annual oaths of loyalty to the president, right?” One user inquired.

“When did you cross that line where you felt it was acceptable to openly root for dictatorship?” Another user asked.

Yet despite this backlash, only a few members of Congress in comparison have spoken out against the presidential power grab.

“The president’s taste for unilateral action to circumvent Congress should concern every citizen, regardless of party or ideology,” Sen. Ted Cruz wrote last month. “The great 18th-century political philosopher Montesquieu observed: ‘There can be no liberty where the legislative and executive powers are united in the same person, or body of magistrates.’”

“America’s Founding Fathers took this warning to heart, and we should too.”

Cruz also added that the most dangerous aspect of Obama’s presidency was his persistent pattern to “enforce his own policies via executive fiat,” which is exactly what Brazile is encouraging Obama to do.

Unfortunately, when it comes to establishment politicians in both parties, they actually enjoy Obama usurping power from Congress because it sets a precedent for the president to write his own laws, which benefits them when their party controls the White House.

But to emphasize a point that Cruz made, this isn’t a partisan issue at all but rather a constitutional crisis which threatens the very foundation of our republic; the Constitution was specifically designed to prevent the concentration of power into one branch of government and its associated dangers.

Brazile’s comment is even more disturbing considering that she made it today on President’s Day, which was established in part to celebrate George Washington’s birthday, a man who voluntarily stepped down from power despite many Americans urging him not to.

In his 1796 Farewell Address, Washington warned Americans about how political factions can and will work against the Constitution to concentrate power into the hands of the few, which is exactly what’s happening now:

All obstructions to the execution of the laws, all combinations and associations, under whatever plausible character, with the real design to direct, control, counteract, or awe the regular deliberation and action of the constituted authorities, are destructive of this fundamental principle, and of fatal tendency.

They serve to organize faction, to give it an artificial and extraordinary force; to put, in the place of the delegated will of the nation the will of a party, often a small but artful and enterprising minority of the community; and, according to the alternate triumphs of different parties, to make the public administration the mirror of the ill-concerted and incongruous projects of faction, rather than the organ of consistent and wholesome plans digested by common counsels and modified by mutual interests.

However combinations or associations of the above description may now and then answer popular ends, they are likely, in the course of time and things, to become potent engines, by which cunning, ambitious, and unprincipled men will be enabled to subvert the power of the people and to usurp for themselves the reins of government, destroying afterwards the very engines which have lifted them to unjust dominion.
