Alabama House passes resolution requesting constitutional convention to ban marriage equality

Closeup of the U.S. Constitution

That the Alabama House passed a resolution calling for a constitutional convention in order to ban same-sex marriage nationwide forever ‘n ever is not all that surprising. More surprising is that apparently most of the representatives involved didn’t know what the hell they were voting for:

According to the resolution, the convention would specifically propose an amendment defining marriage as a union between one man and one woman, and bar legal recognition of any other form of marriage.

Democrats on the Rules Committee wouldn’t have signed off if they’d known what it was, Todd said. The description of the resolution on a summary sheet provided to committee members, she said, only mentioned that the state would call for a convention to make an amendment to the U.S. Constitution. It did not specify what the amendment would address. [...]

The resolution passed on a voice vote of the chamber.

Laboratories of democracy, indeed.

(AP) — Backed by one of the GOP’s most powerful benefactors, Las Vegas has emerged as an early leader in the multi-city fight to host the next Republican National Convention.

The competition is far from over as Republican officials weigh nagging concerns about unveiling the GOP’s next presidential nominee in a place commonly known as “Sin City” in the shadow of Republican mega-donor Sheldon Adelson. Political leaders from competing cities such as Dallas, Denver and Kansas City openly question Las Vegas’ image, while promoting their own network of billionaire donors as they jockey for any advantage they can find.

But all eyes are on Las Vegas, where a handful of prospective presidential candidates met privately with Adelson at his Venetian resort casino over the weekend.

“Sheldon wants it,” said former Nevada Gov. Bob List, a senior advisor to the Las Vegas bid. “It’s a business proposition. A city wanting this convention is going to need real money behind it.”

Among the world’s 10 richest people, the CEO of the Las Vegas Sands Corp. has made no secret of his willingness to put his vast fortune behind the effort. He and his top advisers are playing an active role in the early planning and outreach. And he is not alone. The casino industry, including the leaders of the Caesar’s Palace, MGM Grand and the Wynn, is largely unified behind the city’s 2016 bid.

The Republican National Committee on Wednesday narrowed the field of possible convention cities from eight to six, eliminating Columbus, Ohio and Phoenix from a list that now includes Las Vegas, Denver, Dallas, Kansas City, Mo., and two others in Ohio — Cleveland and Cincinnati.

Republican officials plan to pick the host city this summer.

The RNC wants the conference held in the early summer of 2016, roughly two months sooner than has become the norm. Officials are focused on each city’s transportation and hotel plans following a 2012 Tampa convention in which many participants were forced into hotels an hour from the convention site. But money is the dominant concern.

RNC officials who were forced to divert limited resources toward the last two conventions insist they cannot do so again. Most cities expect a convention price tag of between $ 55 million and $ 60 million.

Dallas is considered a major player in the competition, in part because of its coalition of wealthy donors with ties to the Bush family and the oil industry. Former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush is among a crowded field of prospective 2016 candidates. The city has already gathered $ 41 million in donor pledges, according to Dallas committee CEO Phillip Jones.

Touting a broad coalition of support in Dallas, Jones discounted the value of Adelson’s support when asked about the casino magnate’s role.

“We have several powerful billionaire figures supporting our bid,” Jones said, noting that Dallas is Number 4 on the global list of billionaires after New York, London and Moscow. “If they want to play the billionaire game, we win.”

He also highlighted image problems for Las Vegas and Denver, which is in a state that recently legalized recreational marijuana.

“No one’s going to get into trouble having their meeting in Dallas,” Jones said. “There are some cities we’re competing with that have some significant messaging challenges.”

Democrats are paying close attention.

The Democratic-allied research group, American Bridge, has already promised to send up to three dozen operatives with video cameras to catch Republican convention-goers in embarrassing moments — even coming and going from casinos or strip clubs. The group has created a “Sin City” website — www.sincitygop.com — to air the video.

Denver’s political leaders have also raised concerns about Las Vegas, while promoting its own recent experience with the 2008 Democratic National Convention, relatively mild summer climate and wealth of hotel rooms.

“There’s a lot of places you can get in trouble in Vegas,” noted Owen Loftus, a spokesman for the Colorado Republican Party.

The Denver effort is chaired by Molson Coors chairman Pete Coors and includes conservative billionaire Phillip Anschutz.

Kansas City Mayor Sly James, a Democrat leading the bipartisan group to win the Republican convention, highlighted the city’s central location and community approach. The billionaire conservative donors, Charles and David Koch, based in nearby Wichita, Kan., have not played a role in the city’s bid, although organizers hope to attract their support.

“Dallas is big. It’s got its millionaires. Hooray, I’m happy for them,” James said. “And Las Vegas has got all of its other stuff — and it’s very well-known, and very popular for those who want to partake.”

Kansas City, he said, is full of “people who have good solid Midwestern values.”

Meanwhile, in a law firm conference room several miles from the Las Vegas strip, a confident List said he expects his city to be a finalist.

The rift within the state GOP is improving, he says, following a 2012 libertarian takeover of several party leadership positions. And he says the city’s infrastructure has no rival: The city has more hotel rooms, conference space and world-class entertainment than most of the competing cities combined.

“We’re proud of this city,” List said. “We can’t wait to show it off.”

Arizona: Committee will be voting on the Convention of States Project application

Arizona: Committee will be voting on the Convention of States Project application

There will be a crucial vote in Arizona tomorrow. The Federalism and Fiscal Responsibility Committee will be voting on the Convention of States Project application HCR 2027 tomorrow at 2:00pm MST at the Arizona State Legislature in Phoenix.

The application was proposed by Rep. Kelly Townsend, R-Mesa.

“Our federal representatives have created a national debt that threatens our most basic freedoms,” Townsend said, “and threatens the liberty of generations to come. The states must act now to forestall further damage to our economic and personal liberties.”

The purpose of the Convention of States is to propose amendments to the U.S. Constitution; the gathering is also known as an Article V Convention. It was founded to stop the out of control spending by the federal government, stop them from taking power from the states and taking liberty from the people.

This vote is the first step that at least 34 states must take in order to set into motion the call for a convention of states. Article V of the U.S. Constitution says that if two-thirds of state legislatures request a convention of states, the federal government must call for a convention.

Article V allows the states to propose and ratify amendments to the U.S. Constitution without the votes of federal representatives and signature of the president.

In order for an amendment to take effect, it must receive support from three-fourths of the 50 state legislatures, or 38 states. How each state ratifies an amendment is to be decided by the U.S. Congress. The convention itself will only propose amendments; it will not ratify them.

Townsend has posted a wealth of information on her Facebook page. She lays out all of the facts and arguments. She has also posted which elected officials are on board with her proposal and the national policy institutes that endorse the Convention of States.

Mark Meckler of the Arizona COS Project Team has called upon all supporters to attend the hearing at the State Legislature. In an email today he wrote, “Your voice could be the deciding factor in the success of the COS application.”

The vote will take place in Room HHR 1 at the Arizona State Capitol, 1700 West Washington Street.

Obama to address convention of disabled veterans

(AP) — President Barack Obama will cite progress in reducing the backlog of disability claims when he addresses a gathering of disabled veterans on Saturday.

The White House says Obama also will discuss research into traumatic brain injury, post-traumatic stress disorder and suicide among veterans and troops, as well as efforts to help veterans earn college degrees or get the credentials needed to compete for high-skilled jobs during his an appearance before the Disabled American Veterans’ convention in downtown Orlando, Fla.

First lady Michelle Obama will also address the veterans. Mrs. Obama and Vice President Joe Biden’s wife, Jill, are leading a national effort to rally public support for military families.

A top concern for veterans is the staggering backlog of disability claims for compensation for illness and injury caused by military service.

The number of claims waiting to be processed ballooned under Obama, largely because the administration made it easier for Vietnam veterans who were exposed to the Agent Orange defoliant to get benefits.

But the backlog recently has begun to shrink due to aggressive steps taken by the Veterans Affairs Department, including requiring claims processors to work overtime and transitioning to a new computer system to help speed the judgment of claims. About 780,000 claims are pending. Currently, about 500,000 are considered backlogged, down from about 611,000 in March.

A claim is deemed backlogged if it has been in the system for 125 days, or roughly four months.

The Disabled American Veterans organization, which helps veterans access benefits, generally has applauded the administration for taking steps to address the backlog. The group also has been a staunch defender of VA Secretary Eric Shinseki, who has promised to wipe out the claims backup by 2015.

Beyond the backlogged claims, Republican lawmakers have begun to hammer the VA on the issue of patient safety. A congressional hearing in Atlanta this past week focused on poor patient care linked to four deaths. Another hearing is scheduled for next month in Pittsburgh, where five veterans died as a result of a Legionnaire’s disease outbreak in 2011-12.

Rep. Jeff Miller, R-Fla., chairman of the House Veterans’ Affairs Committee, said he hoped Obama would use his appearance at the disabled veterans convention to make a personal commitment to solving both issues.

In his remarks, Obama also is expected to reaffirm the administration’s commitment to winning ratification of United Nations treaty encouraging countries to ensure that people with disabilities enjoy the same rights and fundamental freedoms as the able-bodied.

Led by Republican opposition, the Senate rejected the treaty last December, falling five votes short of the number needed for ratification.

Palin Rallies NRA Faithful at Convention

Former vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin rallied the faithful at the National Rifle Association’s annual convention on Friday by slamming President Barack Obama for using the parents of those killed in the Connecticut shootings as “backdrops” to push his gun-control agenda.

And Palin — wearing a T-shirt that said “women hunt” — was just as harsh on the mainstream media for allowing Obama to get away with it.

“That same media is now the reliable poodle-skirted cheerleader for the president that writes the book on exploiting tragedy,” Palin said, according to Politico.

The former Alaska governor insisted that all Americans experienced “despair, sadness and absolute anger” when they saw what happened at Sandy Hook Elementary School in December.

And while everyone should be more concerned about those being shot to death every day on the streets of such cities as New York City and Chicago, that should not guide public policy.

“Now, emotion is a good and a necessary thing,” Palin said, Politico reports. “But we have politicians exploiting emotion for their own agenda. We have well-meaning Americans who are desperate to respond.

“We’re fighting the good fight,” she added. “The Washington establishment sneers at you, and you don’t give up. The lamestream media just plain doesn’t get you, and you don’t give up. You don’t retreat.”

Palin received a standing ovation after describing the 4.5 million members of the NRA as her “brothers and sisters.”
