NEW ORLEANS (Reuters) – Ford Motor Co told dealers on Sunday that the radical redesign of the upcoming F-150 pickup will be easier and cheaper to repair than the outgoing model, helping hold down insurance costs for buyers.

Ford touted the savings for customers as a selling point, and the company pledged to help dealers defray expenses of up to $ 50,000 that some will need to pay for tools and equipment to certify their repair shops for the new truck.

The new F-150′s body is 95 percent made of a military grade aluminum alloy used in Humvees and weighs up to 700 pounds less than the current truck. It was redesigned in a “modular” fashion that allows dealers and repair shops to save hours on fixes.

Among the most important changes is the front structure that holds the fender, Ford global marketing chief Jim Farley said. This piece is no longer welded, and can be taken off the truck, shaving six to seven hours from average repair time on that part.

“You’ll see the dramatic changes we made that will really help save a lot of labor costs in the repairability of the vehicle,” Farley said after meeting with dealers at the annual National Automobile Dealers Association conference.

Ford launched the truck at the Detroit auto show this month and it will appear in showrooms late this year. Ford’s display at the NADA conference features a deconstructed F-150 shaded in different colors to illustrate the modular redesign.

The so-called “B-pillar” that slices between the front and rear doors was painted green and affixed with a sign saying it can be replaced without disturbing the roof. The A-pillar or roof rail tube can be sectioned off for repairs.

The more extensive use of aluminum in the new F-150 requires dealers and repair shops to use different repair tools. But many already have experience with aluminum because it is used in the hood of the current F-150 and in other models on the road.

Just 20 percent of dealers have a collision shop to make fixes to major dents and dings in these work trucks. Independent shops handle the majority of such repairs.

It may cost a dealer between $ 30,000 and $ 50,000 to be certified to do repairs on the new F-150, but that range applies to dealers who are “starting from scratch,” executives said. Independent shops will also have to be certified by Ford.

The No. 2 U.S. automaker told dealers it would defray up to 20 percent, or $ 10,000, of the cost of certification.

It is unclear what the cost of insuring the new truck will be, but executives said costs will be “competitive” with rivals. The new truck’s modular design help lower overall costs and hold down insurance costs, according to one dealer at the meeting.

“They think (insurance costs) will be same or possibly even less because Ford has done this in a modular way,” said Todd Citron, a Ford dealer in Lafayette, Louisiana. “In other words, they can fix the vehicle in components.”

It’s safe to assume Toronto Mayor Rob Ford is happy with the Canadian health care system.

The scandal-plagued mayor sat down with Fox’s “The O’Reilly Factor” for an interview that aired Monday, and Ford shook his head when correspondent Jesse Watters asked if he supported President Barack Obama.

“No,” Ford said. “No, no, no, no, no, I’m not a lefty I’m a righty.”

“Come on, some of the stuff you guys are doing down there, to me — are you crazy?” he continued. “You’re giving away–”

“You’re not an Obamacare supporter?” Waters prodded.

“Come on!” Ford laughed.

‘Saturday Night Live’ mocks Toronto Mayor Rob Ford for endless stream of apologies

It’s been a rough week for Toronto Mayor Rob Ford. But don’t worry, he had a press conference to apologize for his actions — and then another press conference to apologize for his first press conference.

The scandal-ridden politician was the focus of the cold open during this week’s Saturday Night Live. The fake Ford, played by Bobby Moynihan, appeared on a Canadian broadcast news program. The host asked the Mayor what he wanted to say to his voters.

“Ooh, just that I goofed up, eh?” the Mayor explained.

Faux Ford wasn’t too worried about his public image though. The Mayor pointed out that he had held a press conference earlier in the day to apologize for using crude language earlier in the week. But during his appearance before reporters, fake Ford also brought chapstick for them to put on before kissing his a**.

But the Mayor realized his mistake and apologized at anotherpress conference shortly thereafter. That presser didn’t go well either, however, as Ford’s crack dealer showed up to make a deal.

And then just a half hour before his appearance on the news, program, fake Ford has held another press conference — during which he body slammed the podium after telling reporters to more lewd things.

After realizing that the Canadian broadcast anchor didn’t believe him, faux Ford resorted to appearing on a show where people would believe him — CBS‘ 60 Minutes, which recently came under fire for airing an interview with a ‘Benghazi witness’ who told lies about the attack.

Ford Apologizes For Lewd Remarks, Says He Is Seeking Medical Help

Toronto Mayor Rob Ford on Thursday afternoon apologized for explicit statements he made earlier Thursday. 

“The revelations yesterday … pushed me over the line. And I used unforgivable language,” Ford said in a press conference at city hall in Toronto.

“I have apologized, and I have tried to move forward,” he said. “This has proven to be almost impossible.

Ford added that he is seeking help from medical professionals.

“I wish you to know, I’m receiving support from a team of healthcare professionals,” he said. “I do not wish to comment on the particulars of the support.”

On Thursday morning, Ford used lewd language when refuting allegations that former staffers made to police.

“Oh, and the last thing was Olivia Gondek. It says that I wanted to eat her p****. I’ve never said that in my life to her; I would never do that. I’m happily married, I’ve got more than enough to eat at home. Thanks very much,” Ford said on live television.

(Newser) – Another day in the exciting life of Toronto Mayor Rob Ford: Today, he had the pleasure of standing before city council and ‘fessing up to buying illegal drugs while serving as mayor over the last two years, reports the Toronto Sun. “Yes, I have,” Ford admitted, after a long pause, under questioning from a council member. At another point, he added, “There might be a coat hanger in my closet,” reports the Toronto Star. “I don’t know what’s left.” What’s decidedly not left: His previous confession to smoking crack.

He spoke before the same council that is trying to figure out a way to run the city without any interference from Ford, who continues to rebuff their pleas to at least take a leave of absence. (Here is the transcript of a letter councilors unveiled today, citing “the seemingly endless cycle of allegations, denials, and belated admissions about your behaviour.”) Ford also told the council that, on the advice of his attorney, he will not be cooperating with the police investigation into his actions, reports CNN.

Harrison Ford accused of “harassing state institutions” about climate change

If Harrison Ford hadn’t already been planning to leave Indonesia yesterday, its forestry minister says he would have had him deported. The state official is outraged after Ford allegedly harassed him about illegal logging and climate change, the Guardian reports:

Ford appears to have witnessed illegal logging taking place in Sumatra’s Tesso Nilo national park and asked Hasan why deforestation was occurring in protected areas while the guilty seemingly had free rein.

“He was emotional,” Hasan said. “I can understand that this is the first time for this American to come here and see Tesso Nilo. It seems that what he wants to see is any perpetrators involved in the damage immediately arrested.”

The minister said he told Ford that illegal logging was a complicated issue in Indonesia and required a more varied approach to stem it than simple force.

The actor, 71, was in the country conducting interviews for an episode of Showtime’s Years of Living Dangerously, a documentary series premiering in April 2014. He’s yet to comment on whether he was deliberately trying to provoke the minister.

In an earlier interview yesterday, Indonesia’s president, Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, reportedly told Ford that the country plans to be strict in cracking down on illegal logging. Still, “There’s no privilege for him although he is a great actor,” said a presidential spokesman.
