Highest Radiation Level Ever, Lethal In 20 Minutes, Recorded Outside Fukushima Reactor

Highest Radiation Level Ever, Lethal In 20 Minutes, Recorded Outside Fukushima Reactor

Zero Hedge
December 8, 2013

With all the excitement about Japan’s soaring stock market (if plunging wages), crashing non-digital currency (leading to soaring energy prices), recent passage of an arbitrary secrecy bill (“Designed by Kafka & Inspired By Hitler“), and ongoing territorial spat with China, it is almost as if the Abe administration is desperately doing everything in its power, including some of the most ridiculous decisions taken by a government in recent history, to hide some key development behind the scenes. Such as this one perhaps: NHK reported today that TEPCO said radiation levels are extremely high in an area near a ventilation pipe at the crippled Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant. TEPCO found radiation of 25 sieverts an hour on a duct, which connects reactor buildings and the 120-meter-tall ventilation pipe.

Putting this number in context the estimated radiation level is the highest ever detected outside reactor buildings. People exposed to this level of radiation would die within 20 minutes.

The exhaust pipe in question was used to release radioactive gases following the outbreak of the accident 2 years ago.

TEPCO says radioactive substances could remain inside the pipes. Given TEPCO’s safety record, they could also leak outside of the pipes. And given the company’s “credibility” the world would be sure to learn about this… anywhere between 2 and 3 years after the fact.

In the meantime, we urge Japan to follow the bouncing, and so pleasantly distracting, Topix and Nikkei 225 balls, while sticking its head in the glow in the dark sand and completely ignore the radioactive monster in the closet.

… Which reminds us: on Thursday the following headline hit the Bloomberg tape:

  • FUKUSHIMA RADIATION TO REACH U.S. COAST AT SAFE LEVEL: NRC

We are sure it is nothing, and the NRC is telling the truth.

Obama Scores Highest Very Favorables Among Currently Serving Politicians

barack obama
A new historic low, brought to you by the Republican Party.

According to a new Economist/YouGov.com poll, just 6% approve of the way Congress is handling its job. Seventy-two percent disapprove. That puts Congress the historic low of a 6% approval rating. “Only 10 percent of Democrats, 7 percent of Republicans, and 3 percent of independents approve of Congress,” the poll said.

Speaker John Boehner might want to wipe that smirk off of his ObamaCare whinging grimace, because he has a very favorable rating of just 5%, while President Obama has a very favorable approval rating of 22%, which is the highest very favorable rating of any currently serving politician in the poll. (Hillary Clinton scored the highest at 27% very favorable.)

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell joins Boehner in that 5%. So only 5% really like these two Republicans – but one things Republicans do well is hate. So, Obama has 47% very unfavorable compared to Boehner’s 40% very unfavorable and McConnell’s 35% very unfavorable.

Obama has an overall 41% favorable to 55% unfavorable, while only 4% said they don’t know. Boehner has overall favorables of 22%, with 60% unfavorables, while 19% don’t know. McConnell scores 19% overall favorables, 54% unfavorables, while 28% don’t know.

The two Republicans are benefiting from higher “don’t knows”, while to put this in perspective, only 14% say they don’t know about Nancy Pelosi and yet she is not the current Speaker of the House. It makes sense that since Republicans go negative most often, they’ve solidified the hate over the “don’t knows”. What they never manage to do is lock up very many “favorables”.

“Opinions of Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid don’t seem to be affected by the filibuster vote,” according to the poll. “Unfavorable opinions of him continue to outnumber favorable ones, but he scores modestly better than his GOP counterpart, Minority Leader Mitch McConnell. And Congressional Democrats fare better than Congressional Republicans.”

These bad poll numbers might seem distressing for Congress and Republicans especially, but Republicans don’t mind getting dirty in order to smear the other side. And that’s what is happening here. By obstructing everything and turning this Congress into a historically lazy Congress, Republicans bring down the public’s trust in Congress and bring down the morale of hard core Democrats – the very people who vote in midterms.

This is a deliberate strategy meant to depress the vote as an added bonus to pretending a Democrat wasn’t re-elected to the White House. It works because too much of the public is misinformed about how our government works, and they blame both parties for the “gridlock” narrative, well established by the ever helpful stenographers in the mainstream media.

Republicans only have charge of one chamber in Congress, and that’s the House — where they work less days and get historically less done than any other Congress.

After all of the relentless negativity aimed at Obama’s signature legislation, the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, the fact that he has higher very favorables than any other currently serving politician polled is a testament to Obama’s consistently high likability.

Brady v. Manning Gets Highest Nov. Primetime Ratings for NFL Game in 17 Years

Tom Brady versus Peyton Manning on Sunday night delivered another classic game–and monster ratings.

Brady’s Patriots beat Manning’s Broncos in windy Foxborough on Sunday night on Sunday Night Football 34-31 in overtime after trailing 24-0 at halftime. The game ended when New England’s Stephen Gostkowski kicked a 31-yard field goal with 1:56 left in overtime. The Patriots got the ball back when Denver’s Tony Carter didn’t hear Wes Welker calling players off and let a punt hit him two plays before. The ball then became live, and the Patriots recovered.

The game was thrilling, and fans, who normally tune in to live sports like the NFL, were captivated and stayed with the game until the end. This was the 14th time Brady and Manning have met, and Brady has a 10-4 record against Manning.

According to Deadline:

Tom Brady’s heroics last night delivered big ratings for what already had been billed as a marquee “Manning-Brady XIV” matchup. The fourteenth faceoff between the NFL superstars, which featured an epic comeback for the Brady-led Patriots over Peyton Manning’s Broncos from 0-24 after the first half to a thrilling win in overtime, drew a 17.0 overnight household rating from 8:30 PM-12:30 AM. That was the highest primetime overnight for a November game in 17 years, the second highest rated SNF game this season behind the 17.3 for Manning’s return to Indianapolis on Oct. 20, and the fifth highest rated overall in SNF’s eight-year history.

Indian cricket superstar Sachin Tendulkar has indeed left the pitch for the last time, now that his national team’s match against the West Indies is over (India won easily, 495-182).

As predicted, the West Indies ran out of batsmen on Saturday and never came close to erasing India’s lead — effectively ending the competition on Day 3 of what could have been a 5-day match.

On his way into retirement, the “little master” has been awarded the Bharat Ratna, which the Times of India describes as the nation’s “highest civilian honor.” He’s the first “sportsman” to receive that award.

Tendulkar, 40, is to cricket in India what Babe Ruth was to baseball in the U.S. He’s also one of the highest-paid athletes in the world — ranking No. 51 on Forbes‘ latest list, with about $ 22 million in earnings.

India’s Tv9 Maharashtra has posted a video on his emotional departure from the game. It’s not in English, but you’ll certainly get the drift.
