Will Mexico’s capture of ‘El Chapo’ mean border instability? US agents on alert.

Lourdes Medrano
weeklystandard.com
February 26, 2014

The weekend capture of top drug lord Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán is being hailed as a major victory for Mexico, but some are cautioning that his arrest could unleash a wave of violence, particularly along the US-Mexico border.

Mr. Guzmán had control of, among other areas, the state of Sonora, which shares the international boundary with Arizona. Sonora is no stranger to violence triggered by disturbance to drug cartel leadership: In December 2009, when Mexican security forces killed Arturo Beltrán Leyva, a former Guzmán ally-turned-rival, the death ushered in a battle between factions in the city of Nogales, which shares its name with its US neighbor, and surrounding communities.

In one instance, a shootout left at least 21 people dead.

Action alert: Just 2 days left to help stop the FDA"s regulatory war on small, local farmers

(NaturalNews) There are only two days left to post your comments to the FDA concerning the agency’s desire to place onerous new food safety regulations on small, local farmers (while allowing big agribusiness to conduct business as usual).

Click here to read the full alert at Cornucopia.org.

This is all about the “Food Safety Modernization Act” or FSMA. As Cornucopia states, “regulators and corporate agribusiness are using the FSMA to competitively crush the organic and local farming movements at the same time.”

As Cornucopia states, many in the industry believe the FDA is using FSMA as a regulatory weapon rather than a tool solely intended for public safety. This regulatory weapon is being used, they say, to drive small organic farmers out of business, thereby delivering greater market share and profitability to the agri-business giants that can afford to deal with all the burdensome regulations.

Cornucopia has issued a full action alert here.

The Farm and Ranch Freedom Alliance has also posted an action alert on this issue, stating:

The FDA wants to be able to revoke farmers’ and producers’ exemptions without respecting basic principles of fairness and due process… In essence, this means that any farmer or producer targeted by the FDA for revocation of its exemption will almost certainly go out of business.

Click here to read the Farm and Ranch Freedom alert which describes this issue in much greater detail.

Click here for full instructions and links on how to submit your own comments to the FDA.

You MUST submit your comments by Friday, November 15th. Furthermore, if you do not submit comments and you ever go to court with the FDA over food safety issues on your farm, the fact that you did not submit comments has been deemed by the courts to automatically mean you have waived your rights to disagree with the FDA’s rules!

Thus, if you are a farmer or food producer of any kind, submitting your comments is essential to protecting your future rights in any possible litigation involving the FDA.

The FDA has taken some positive actions lately, including banning trans fats and requiring dog food manufacturers to follow Good Manufacturing Practices, but this FSMA effort is overreaching, unduly burdensome and in some ways actually worsens food safety instead of improving it.

Join Natural News in filing your comments against these onerous FDA regulations that target small farmers.

Fracking alert: New York switches to shale gas

The US shale revolution has reached the Big Apple, where on Nov. 1 the first gas pipeline in 40 years will be completed in its meatpacking district. While politicians and firms are hungry for cheap gas, residents fear fracking and eco-damage.

The cheaper gas will run from the Marcellus shale field in Pennsylvania to about 2 million homes in Manhattan.

The $ 1.2 billion pipeline, built by Houston-based Spectra Energy, will supply an estimated 800 million cubic feet a day of gas from the country’s fastest growing gas deposit, in Pennsylvania, and elsewhere across the Hudson River, into Manhattan, the Financial Times reports.

The need to replace expensive and dirty heating oil has long been voiced by policymakers, with the city’s outgoing mayor, Michael Bloomberg, putting gas high on his administration’s agenda. The city has underlined a “critical need for additional natural gas capacity” in its long-term urban plan.

With gas prices nearing historic lows and expected to remain below oil prices for some time, building owners have the unique opportunity to upgrade their heating systems while generating a return on their investment,” the city’s plan said.

This is a very simple equation: the more buildings that switch to gas, the more fracking will happen,”   Sane Energy, a pipeline opposition group, wrote in a letter to federal regulators.

Under the plan, landlords will be legally forbidden from burning No. 6 heavy fuel oil from 2015, which has led many to already shift to gas.

While the pipeline has been welcomed by many policymakers, residents fear the project could cause an explosion and environmental contamination.

The pipeline runs from New Jersey under the Hudson River and enters Manhattan at 10th Avenue and Gansevoort Street, stretching up to 15th Street. The area around Hudson River Park could see increased development in the coming years — leaving more people vulnerable to a potential explosion.

New York’s move also comes at a time when the state government is thinking about lifting a ban on hydraulic fracturing, or fracking, which critics say contaminates water with large volumes of toxic waste and releases potential greenhouse gas methane, causing cancer.

It’s estimated that northeastern US fields will supply 90 percent of New York gas in 2030, compared to 13 per cent in 2005. Some 29 per cent of city homes are oil-heated, while the share of oil heating share nationally is 6 percent, according to the Energy Information Administration. Gas is 65 per cent cheaper than oil, according to Con Edison, the New York utility.

But ecology groups fear that the drive for gas profits will inevitably lead to harmful fracking.

Alert: FBI Investigating Threats to Midwest Water Supply Systems: “On High Alert”

water-warningSHTF Plan – by Mac Slavo

Reuters reports that the FBI and other agencies are in the process of investigating multiple threats to Midwest Water Supply Systems. Specifically, the FBI has named Wichita, Kansas as a target, but utility facilities have also been put on alert in other Midwestern cities.

(ReutersThe U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation learned of the threats in the past two days and has contacted the water supply facilities and law enforcement offices for the municipalities, said Bridget Patton, a spokeswoman for the FBI office in Kansas City, Missouri.

Patton declined to discuss the nature of the threats or the number of cities affected. She said investigators had been sent out in response to the reports, but offered no details.

“We were made aware of the threat,” Patton said. “We have not been able to substantiate any of the threats.”

Wichita city officials warned employees in emails to be on guard for suspicious activities. City officials also told residents the water is safe to drink and the public will be notified immediately if this changes.

Wichita Police Lieutenant Doug Nolte said Friday that the city had taken steps to keep the city’s water supply safe, but would not describe what measures had been taken.

(KSN News“The FBI as of our law enforcement agencies take any threats to the public personal safety very seriously,” said Bridget Patton, Media Representative for the FBI.

For the last several days, the FBI has been looking into a regional water threat.

KSN News learned the potential hazard affects four major water systems in the mid-west including Wichita.

The Wichita water utility plants serve about 500,000 people, but many millions may be affected should systems in multiple Midwest cities fail or come under attack simultaneously.

In 2011 cyber security McAfee issued a warning titled In the Dark: Crucial Industries Confront Cyberattacks, in which they noted that all critical infrastructure systems connected to the internet could be compromised by rogue attacks resulting in shutdowns or malfunctions.

The sectors on which this report focuses — power, oil, gas, and water — may well be the first targets for a serious cyberattack.

What we found is that they are not ready. The professionals charged with protecting these systems report that the threat has accelerated — but the response has not. Cyberexploits and attacks are already widespread. Whether it is cybercriminals engaged in theft or extortion, or foreign governments preparing sophisticated exploits like Stuxnet, cyberattackers have targeted critical infrastructure.

In the case of water utilities, if hackers were to take control of the computers that maintain safe water levels and chemical treatment they could potentially poison the water supplies of millions. In such a case people could go to sleep like any normal night, wake up in the morning and have a glass of water, and be poisoned by any number of chemical or biological agents that have been released into the water supplies.

Hackers have already broken into water utility computer systems recently, despite assurances that the systems are safe. In November of 2011 a Stuxnet-style virus infected the physical components of the Springfield, Illinois water utility plant and shut down water pumps, demonstrating that not only can systems be infiltrated from outside of protected networks, but that the physical equipment can be overtaken.

But it’s not just the computer systems. There is a woeful disregard for perimeter security in and around critial infrastructure assets around the United States, including water plants.

Security around national water reservoirs may not be as safe as we thought:

In a time where people talk all the time about droughts, 21 year old Josh Seater has cost the city of Portland Oregon 8 million gallons of drinking water.

After a night on the town, a heavily intoxicated Seater began urinating a water reservoir.  “I didn’t know it was a water supply, otherwise I wouldn’t have done it, I thought it was a sewage plant”.

The cost of Josh’s drunken behavior has cost the Portland Water Bureau $ 36,000, as the 8 million gallons have had to be completely drained away.

While TSA gaterapes grannies in diapers at our local airports and steams ahead on expanding enhanced pat-downs and searches to all public venues including train stations, sporting events and malls, the real security holes are completely ignored.

With so many billions of dollars being spent on homeland security, Americans have been left with a false sense of security. The government tells us they are protecting us, and most people simply take this at face value.

In reality, even if the government was  efficiently deploying its resources for effectively securing critical infrastructure, the fact is that nothing can ever be 100% secure. This is evidenced by recent comments from outgoing Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano, who warned that a widespread cyber attack on our national power grid and other infrastructure is not only guaranteed, but imminent.

In previous comments, Napolitano, along with the Federal Emergency Management Agency, has advised Americans to stockpile at least two (2) weeks of essential supplies, including food and fresh drinking water, citing concerns that emergency responders could be overwhelmed in the event of a widespread emergency.

Failure to prepare for short and long-term disaster could be deadly. Most Americans have about three days worth of food supplies and almost no reserve water supplies ormethods for filtering water should the water supply be compromised.

As we saw with Hurricane Sandy, any disruptions to the normal flow of supplies or commerce would lead to a breakdown within 72 hours as those affected struggle to acquire limited resources.

AMBER ALERT WEBSITE SHUT DOWN, MICHELLE"S "LET"S MOVE" STAYS UP

This is unbelievable. The Obama administration has shut down the Amber Alert website because of the government shutdown and it now renders this message when you attempt to access it:

amberalertwebsite_unavailable

I’m sure you care about your lost child but Obama doesn’t – at least not while he’s trying to ‘win’ the government shutdown. I understand from twitter that Amber alerts are state level programs with a federal website. Not real sure how all that works but it just seems unfathomable that this website wouldn’t qualify under ‘essential’, especially when most of the government is still operating.

No, this is just Obama putting politics ahead of you finding your lost child. Despicable.

UPDATE: Michelle Obama’s Let’s Move website works just fine. Seriously. (h/t: @kesgardner)

RED ALERT...

Tyrone Siu/Reuters

Doors were taped in Hong Kong on Saturday in anticipation of a strong typhoon.

HONG KONG — The strongest typhoon to hit Asia this year caused landslides in the Philippines and flooding in Taiwan on Saturday as it appeared headed toward the densely populated Pearl River Delta area of China, with the financial center of Hong Kong preparing for possible business shutdowns at the start of the workweek.

China’s National Meteorological Center issued a red alert — the highest-level warning — with Super Typhoon Usagi on a path to hit Guangdong Province, the industrial powerhouse at the heart of the Pearl River Delta. Coastal Zhejiang and Fujian provinces were also covered by the alert.

The huge storm — with a width of nearly 700 miles and carrying sustained winds of 139 miles per hour — battered the northern Philippine island of Luzon on one side while striking Taiwan on its north side, moving between the two on a path straight toward Hong Kong at the foot of the delta. It was expected to make landfall in the financial hub Sunday night, although forecasters said it could veer from that course.

More than 2,000 people were evacuated from low-lying and mountainous areas of Taiwan out of fear of flooding and landslides, and powerful storm surges drenched fishing boats along the coasts of the island. In the Philippines, the typhoon caused power failures and evacuations, with landslides in the north of the country, but no fatalities were immediately reported.

The Hong Kong Observatory said the storm would pose a “severe threat to Hong Kong.”

“Engineers, architects and contractors should make sure that scaffoldings, hoardings, windowpanes and other temporary structures are secured,” said the observatory said in a statement. “The public should remain vigilant, and take precautions against strong winds and flooding as early as possible.”

In anticipation of the typhoon, Cathay Pacific Airways and the affiliated Dragonair canceled operations at its Hong Kong hub starting at 6 p.m. Sunday and said flight disruptions would probably continue into Monday.

“The airline is monitoring the situation closely and will issue further advice on the resumption of flight services,” Cathay said in a statement. “It is anticipated that disruptions will continue on 23 September due to the impact of adverse weather and operational constraints.”

As the storm barreled toward mainland China, preparations were already under way, with more than 20,000 fishing boats moved to secure locations and 4,000 people evacuated from coastal areas of Fujian province, state news media reported.

RED ALERT...

False Flag Alert: Do Syrian Rebels Plan To Hit Israel With Chemical Weapons And Blame Assad?

Syrian Rebels in Aleppo, Syria

Do the Syrian rebels plan to attack Israel with chemical weapons in order to provoke Israel into a war with the Assad regime?  Now that it looks like the United States has been backed into a corner by Russia, it seems unlikely that the U.S. military will strike Syria in the immediate future and the Syrian rebels (and their backers in Saudi Arabia and Qatar) are extremely disappointed by this.  The entire purpose for the false flag sarin gas attack that took place back in August was to draw the United States military into the conflict.  Without U.S. intervention, the rebels have very little hope of overthrowing Assad and setting up the hardcore Sunni government that they desire.  So the rebels need another plan and they need one quickly.  Unfortunately, according to international news reports it looks like “Plan B” for the rebels may be to hit Israel with chemical weapons and blame it on Assad.  Of course the rebels absolutely hate Israel, but if they can get Israel to destroy the Assad regime they will be very happy about that.

One of the international news organizations that is reporting on this potential false flag operation is RT

A chemical attack may be launched on Israel by Syrian rebels from government-controlled territories as a “major provocation,” multiple sources told RT.

Jewish news source ynetnews.com has also posted a story about this…

Arabic-language Russian news site Rusiya Al-Yaum has reported that Syrian rebels are planning a chemical attack on Israel.

In the report, it was claimed that “armed Syrian militants will use territories controlled by the Syrian regime to perpetrate their provocative plan.”

And as I discussed yesterday, there is very clear evidence that the rebels do have chemical weapons and have been using them against government forces for months.

These weapons have been supplied to the rebels by Saudi Arabia.  Qatar and Saudi Arabia have both spent billions of dollars to support the rebels in Syria, and they aren’t about to give up the fight now.

Needless to say, both the rebels and their financial supporters are absolutely against the diplomatic solution that Russia has proposed.  The following is from a Daily Beast article that was posted today…

The Syrian political opposition is dead set against the brand-new Obama-administration policy to pursue a new diplomatic negotiation with Russia in an effort to avoid a military strike on Syria, saying the delay and possible cancellation of Obama’s strike would only embolden Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.

And according to Reuters, the “Gulf Arab states” are also expressing their displeasure with what is happening…

Gulf Arab states said on Tuesday a Russian proposal calling for Syria to hand over its chemical weapons to win a reprieve from U.S. military strikes would not stop bloodshed in Syria.

But of course Assad never used chemical weapons in the first place.  This is something I discussed at length yesterday, and this point was underscored by a report in a German newspaper today…

Syrian President Bashar Assad has repeatedly rejected requests from his field commanders for approval to use chemical weapons, according to a report this weekend in a German newspaper.

The report in Bild am Sonntag, which is a widely read and influential national Sunday newspaper, reported that the head of the German Foreign Intelligence agency, Gerhard Schindler, last week told a select group of German lawmakers that intercepted communications had convinced German intelligence officials that Assad did not order or approve what is believed to be a sarin gas attack on Aug. 21 that killed hundreds of people in Damascus’ eastern suburbs.

The only ones that are using chemical weapons in Syria are the rebels.

And if they decide to hit Israel with those chemical weapons and they are able to make it look like Assad did it, the consequences could potentially be absolutely catastrophic.

On Monday, Knesset Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee chairman Avigdor Liberman made it very clear that if Israel is attacked with chemical weapons, it will respond “in the harshest way possible”

Israel will ensure that Syrian leader Bashar Assad will not remain in power if he attacks Israel, Knesset Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee chairman Avigdor Liberman (Likud Beytenu) said Monday.

The statement was the clearest warning to Assad delivered by a top Israeli figure since the escalation of tension between Syria and the United States.

“The supreme Israeli interest is to remain outside the conflict,” Liberman wrote on his Facebook page. “There are many figures trying to drag us in. We have successfully avoided that and we should continue in the future. That is why Bashar Assad’s threats in various media outlets to expand the conflict to neighboring countries bother me.

Israel has no interest, will or intention to take part in the Syrian civil war, but Assad must understand in the clearest way possible that if he and his regime do not leave us a choice and he attacks Israel or transfers chemical weapons to Hezbollah, Israel will respond in the harshest way possible, including toppling his regime.”

If a single chemical warhead falls in an Israeli city, and if the Israelis believe that Assad is responsible, they will respond by absolutely flattening Damascus.

When threatened with weapons of mass destruction, the Israeli military believes that it must respond with overwhelming force.  So Israel would not respond to a chemical attack by responding with a similar attack of their own.  Instead, their response would be asymmetric and it would be designed to completely end the conflict.

Let us hope that the Syrian rebels are not stupid enough to try a false flag attack against Israel.  It would result in a massive amount of innocent dead civilians on both sides, and it could potentially spark a major regional war in the Middle East which could ultimately lead to World War III.

BEX ALERT - Forensic Details in U.N. Report Point to Assad’s Use of Gas

Syrian volunteers on Sunday in the northern city of Aleppo put on gas masks in a class on how to respond to a chemical attack.

A United Nations report released on Monday confirmed that a deadly chemical arms attack caused a mass killing in Syria last month and for the first time provided extensive forensic details of the weapons used, which strongly implicated the Syrian government.

While the report’s authors did not assign blame for the attack on the outskirts of Damascus, the details it documented included the large size and particular shape of the munitions and the precise direction from which two of them had been fired. Taken together, that information appeared to undercut arguments by President Bashar al-Assad of Syria that rebel forces, who are not known to possess such weapons or the training or ability to use them, had been responsible.

The report, commissioned by Secretary General Ban Ki-moon, was the first independent on-the-ground scientific inquest into the attack, which left hundreds of civilians gassed to death, including children, early on Aug. 21.

The repercussions have elevated the 30-month-old Syrian conflict into a global political crisis that is testing the limits of impunity over the use of chemical weapons. It could also lead to the first concerted action on the war at the United Nations Security Council, which up to now has been paralyzed over Syria policy.

“The report makes for chilling reading,” Mr. Ban told a news conference after he briefed the Security Council. “The findings are beyond doubt and beyond the pale. This is a war crime.”

Mr. Ban declined to ascribe blame, saying that responsibility was up to others, but he expressed hope that the attack would become a catalyst for a new diplomatic determination at the United Nations to resolve the Syrian conflict, which has left more than 100,000 people dead and millions displaced.

There was no immediate reaction to the report from the Syrian government. But just two days before the report was released, Syria officially agreed to join the international convention on banning chemical weapons, and the United States and Russia, which have repeatedly clashed over Syria, agreed on a plan to identify and purge those weapons from the country by the middle of next year. Syria has said it would abide by that plan.

The main point of the report was to establish whether chemical weapons had been used in the Aug. 21 attack in the Damascus suburb of Ghouta, an area long infiltrated by rebels. The United Nations inspectors concluded that “chemical weapons have been used in the ongoing conflict between the parties in the Syrian Arab Republic, also against civilians, including children, on a relatively large scale.”

The weapons inspectors, who visited Ghouta and left the country with large amounts of evidence on Aug. 31, said, “In particular, the environmental, chemical and medical samples we have collected provide clear and convincing evidence that surface-to-surface rockets containing the nerve agent sarin were used.”

But the report’s annexes, detailing what the authors found, were what caught the attention of nonproliferation experts.

In two chilling pieces of information, the inspectors said that the remnants of a warhead they had found showed its capacity of sarin to be about 56 liters — far higher than initially thought. They also said that falling temperatures at the time of the attack ensured that the poison gas, heavier than air, would hug the ground, penetrating lower levels of buildings “where many people were seeking shelter.”

The investigators were unable to examine all of the munitions used, but they were able to find and measure several rockets or their components. Using standard field techniques for ordnance identification and crater analysis, they established that at least two types of rockets had been used, including an M14 artillery rocket bearing Cyrillic markings and a 330-millimeter rocket of unidentified provenance.

These findings, though not presented as evidence of responsibility, were likely to strengthen the argument of those who claim that the Syrian government bears the blame, because the weapons in question had not been previously documented or reported to be in possession of the insurgency.

Reporting was contributed by Michael R. Gordon from Paris, Nick Cumming-Bruce from Geneva, Anne Barnard from Beirut, Lebanon, and David E. Sanger from New York.

Jordan Prepares For Syrian Fallout; Places Air Force On High Alert

Zero Hedge
September 4, 2013

Following last week’s refusal to allow the US to use the nation as a launchpad for Syria strikes, Jordan has placed its air-force, one of the Arab world’s strongest, on high alert in anticipation of “various possibilities.” The show of strength captured in Al-Arabiya’s special access to the Jordanian air-base shows F-16s and multiple Himars truck-mounted rocket-launchers. While Jordan, like so many nations, would prefer the political solution, it is prepared for any emergency.

Via Al-Arabiya,

Jordan has put its forces on high alert ahead of anticipated Western airstrikes against the Syrian regime.

Jordan has said it will not be a launchpad for any foreign military intervention in Syria.

But as the West threatens to strike the regime in Syria in response to the use of chemical weapons, it seems that Jordan’s army is ready for various possibilities.

The Jordanian Air force is one of the strongest in the Arab world, possessing many of the most advanced fighter-jets in the world today.

Jordan is also one of few countries that possess the multiple Himars truck -mounted rocket launchers that exceed 70 kilometers in range and can identify a target within seconds.

A political solution in Syria remains the favorable option for Jordan, but the army says it is prepared to defend the country and its people at any time.

US issues worldwide travel alert

Breaking news

The US state department has said it is issuing a global travel alert because of an unspecified al-Qaeda threat.

In a statement, the department said the potential for an attack is particularly strong in the Middle East and North Africa.

The move comes shortly after the US announced the closure of embassies in the region on Sunday.

The alert expires on 31 August 2013, the department said. It recommended US citizens travelling abroad be vigilant.

“Current information suggests that al-Qa’ida and affiliated organizations continue to plan terrorist attacks both in the region and beyond, and that they may focus efforts to conduct attacks in the period between now and the end of August,” the statement said.
