Petri seeks ethics probe — of himself

Rep. Tom Petri (R-Wis.) is requesting an unusual investigation: A review of his own ethics.

In a letter to the House Ethics Committee released by his office on Monday, Petri said he was “distressed by the innuendo” in recent news articles questioning his congressional actions in relation to his personal stock portfolio.

“To end any questions, I am requesting that the Committee formally review the matter and report back,” he wrote.

The step follows a recent Gannett Washington Bureau investigation into his stock ownership in Oshkosh Corp., a defense contractor in his home district that he has championed in Congress.

The report found that Petri’s Oshkosh stock increased by 30 percent as he advocated for the company’s interests. His investments of $ 265,000 to $ 650,000 in Oshkosh stock increased in value $ 340,000 to $ 863,000, Gannett reported.

In the letter, Petri stressed that his actions are no different from any other stockholders’ and that he has reported his investments in annual disclosure forms.

“My advocacy has been undertaken openly,” he wrote. “I have, from time to time, contacted the Committee for guidance on these issues.”

A suspect in a shooting at a Philadelphia high school that left two students wounded turned himself in Saturday, police said. According to local ABC affiliate WPVI-TV, the suspect is also a student.

Earlier on Saturday, police said they had issued a warrant for the suspect and expected him to turn himself in accompanied by an attorney. Another suspect turned himself in on Friday.

The shooting occurred in the school gym. Police told WPVI, surveillance footage showed the gun went off as it was being taken out of a bag.

Carville: Obamacare Rollout Has Been "Awful," Obama Only "Has Himself To Blame"

JAMES CARVILLE: The truth of that is he could have said it a lot more elegantly than he did. I look at these polls, and I think it’s all self-inflicted. This rollout, which they’ve got to get right. It was a disaster. A joke. And there was a way to talk about how many people should get to keep their health insurance in a way that wouldn’t have caused so much trouble. I’m one of the few people who believes and continues to believe that in the end this thing is going to work.

IMUS: I keep thinking that too. I don’t have any interest in this either way, I’m just and observer, sitting here watching the freak parade. But I keep thinking the same thing. That everybody is hysterical: the website doesn’t work and this doesn’t work and things cost too much. But, there is the possibility that come, this time next year we’ll look back on this and say it was awful getting started, but they got it worked out and now it’s fine.

JAMES CARVILLE: The reason they say that IS, In places where it’s up and running — i.e., Massachusetts and some of these other places, you know, California, Connecticut, Kentucky — it is actually doing fine. And they never, things – they get in front of it. The website, they get better. It’ll get better down the road.

They’re going to get better, but the rollout of this has been awful, and it didn’t have to be that way at all. And I think the president has himself to blame as much as anybody. I don’t think he was done in, in this instance, by the Republicans, or done in by the media, done in by anything. It was just a massive mess-up that’s cost him and cost the Democratic party some grief. Maybe temporarily, I hope, but it’s certainly caused some grief out there.

Glenn Beck says history is repeating himself, but what is he referring to?

“History is repeating itself,” Glenn Beck said on his program. “And we can either learn from it and prosper or we can become another lesson for future generations in possibly a new republic, if it is one, to come.”

From The Blaze:

Glenn Beck shared the history of the little-known Jay Treaty on his television show Monday, having been told by a listener that it resembles “what is happening right now.”

Beck agreed, and began: “John Jay was the first Chief Justice of the United States Supreme Court. President George Washington sent him to negotiate a treaty with the British. It was in the mid 1790′s and there were still several conflicts between America and Britain and again, we were on the verge of war.”

Beck said some of the most pressing issues at the time included the full evacuation of remaining British troops and the British acknowledgement of freedom of the seas.

Murder suspect gives himself up to police

“Late last night we received intelligence which led us to an address on Larch Road in Leigh.

“Armed officers attended and a 28-year-old man handed himself into police.

“Over recent weeks we have received a very positive response from the public and we thank the people of Salford, Hindley and Leigh for their co-operation and support.”

A reward of £25,000 had been on offer to anyone with information that led to the arrest and conviction of Cope, while the appeal to find the suspect featured in Thursday’s edition of BBC1′s Crimewatch.

Earlier this month, CCTV images of Cope were released which showed him at a convenience store in Hindley, Wigan, on July 14, where he withdrew cash and bought food.

It was thought he may have evaded police by sleeping rough and using his knowledge of canal pathways between Salford and Leigh.

In a statement issued shortly after Miss Ashton’s death, her family said: “She was the most beautiful, generous, caring person anyone could ever wish to meet. She would never harm anyone and was always there for her children and family.

“Life will never be the same again without her. Our whole family and friends have been devastated by her death. The whole community is in shock.”

Police have charged a 26-year-old man with perverting the course of justice and a 25-year-old man with assisting an offender.

The Independent Police Complaints Commission is investigating the prior contact made by Miss Ashton to Greater Manchester Police.
