Man to Be Tried for Murder After Victim Dies 13 Years Later

(Newser) – Don Willburn Collins was 13 when he allegedly attacked 8-year-old Robert Middleton in Texas in 1998, dousing him with gasoline and setting him on fire. Middleton, who suffered burns across 99% of his body, went through years of physical therapy and ultimately died in 2011 from skin cancer blamed on the burns—and now Collins will be tried for his murder. Collins was arrested after the crime but released after several months because prosecutors didn’t have enough evidence to pursue the case, the AP reports. But just before his death, Middleton gave a videotaped deposition, accusing Collins for the first time of sexually assaulting him two weeks prior to the attack. That deposition caused the case to be reopened.

Collins, now 28, was charged with murder last year, but in order for the case to proceed to trial, prosecutors needed to transfer it from juvenile to adult court. The judge agreed today to do just that, meaning Collins will be tried as an adult. During a three-day hearing on the matter this week, several witnesses testified that Collins had confessed to attacking Middleton. Another victim also testified against Collins—he was also 8 when Collins sexually assaulted him in 2001, Your Houston News reports. Collins was convicted in that case, and has been behind bars for that offense as well as for failing to register as a sex offender.

Mistrial declared in loud music murder trial

Jurors on Saturday found a white Florida man guilty of three counts of attempted murder and one other charge for the fatal shooting of a black teenager over loud music, but a mistrial was declared on the most-serious charge against the defendant — first-degree murder.

After deliberating for more than 30 hours over four days, the jury convicted Michael Dunn, 47, of three counts of attempted murder in the second degree and one count of firing a deadly missile into an occupied vehicle, but deadlocked on the first-degree murder charge, prompting the judge in the case to declare a mistrial on that charge.

Florida State Attorney Angela Corey indicated she would seek a retrial on that count.

Sentencing on the other charges was set for March 24. Dunn still faces at least 60 years in prison on the lesser counts. He could face a sentence of life in prison if he was convicted on the first-degree murder charge on retrial.

Dunn argued he was acting in self-defense when he shot at an SUV 10 times while parked next to four teens at a Jacksonville, Fla., gas station in November 2012 after an argument about loud rap music emanating from the vehicle. The shots killed Jordan Davis, 17, of Marietta, Ga.

Dunn showed no emotion as the verdicts were read. Davis’ parents left the courtroom in tears.

But Dunn’s attorney, Cory Strolla, said later that his client was stunned by the results.

“He basically said, ‘How is this happening?’“ he said. “It has not settled in.”

“It’s been a long, long road and we’re so very happy to have just a little bit of closure,” Davis’ mother, Lucy McBath, told reporters later.

“It’s sad for Mr. Dunn that he will live the rest of his life in that sense of torment. I will pray for him. I will ask my family to pray for him. But we are so grateful for the charges that have been brought against him, we are so grateful for the truth, we are so grateful that the jurors were able to understand the common sense of it all.”

On Dunn’s potentially lengthy sentence, Davis’ father, Ron Davis, said: “He’s going to learn that he must be remorseful for the killing of my son, that it was not just another day at the office.”

The case has been compared to that of George Zimmerman, the neighborhood watch volunteer who was acquitted of murder in the shooting death of unarmed black teen Trayvon Martin in Florida. Like the Zimmerman trial, the case has drawn international attention due to racial overtones and its connection to gun and self-defense laws.

Judge Russell Healey sent the jurors back to continue deliberations earlier Saturday when they indicated a deadlock on the murder charge, saying he wanted them to return to the jury room and express the weakness of each of their arguments.

The sequestered jury of eight whites, two blacks, one Asian and one Hispanic also had asked the judge on if they could rule whether self-defense was applicable to any of the five counts individually.

Healey answered that “self-defense or justifiable use of deadly force applies separately for each count.”

“Each count has to, by law, be considered separately,” Healey said, adding that he realized, “It’s not easy to compartmentalize these things.”

NBC legal expert and former U.S. Attorney Kendall Coffey said the jury’s question showed they were divided about whether Dunn’s claim of self-defense justifies his shots at the other three teens. Some jurors might feel Dunn assumed Davis presented danger, but the other three individuals in the car did not, Coffey added.

Dunn, a software engineer who has a concealed weapons permit and no prior convictions, was waiting in his car while his fiancée was buying snacks inside the gas station convenience store when he got into a verbal fight with Davis and his friends over the volume of their music.

While testifying in his own defense on Tuesday, Dunn said that he started shooting because he felt threatened when he thought he saw the barrel of a gun emerge from the back window as Davis allegedly started getting out of the Dodge Durango.

Police said they didn’t find a weapon in the SUV the teens were in, and prosecutors said Davis — who had no police record — never exhibited a physical threat. Prosecutors also said forensic evidence proved that Davis never left the SUV.

Still, defense lawyer Cory Strolla argued Wednesday that Dunn “had every reason to stand his ground,” using language pointing to a controversial self-defense law allowing people to use deadly force in lieu of retreating if they feel endangered by another person.

But Assistant State Attorney Erin Wolfson said, “This defendant does not get to claim self-defense.”

“This defendant may have forever silenced Jordan Davis, but he cannot silence the truth,” Wolfson added.

Davis’ 19th birthday would have been Sunday.

The reports about the state of Hoffman during his last days seem to be getting worse by the day. Yesterday we were told he died alone, of a lethal heroin overdose with the needle still in his arm and 2 bags of ‘golden brown’ next to him on the bed. I thought it peculiar that a man would die of a self-administered overdose with a needle still in his arm, but we’ll talk about that later. Today, we’re told that police have found no less than 49 bags of heroin in his Greenwich Village flat. Really, 49 bags? The bags were marked with the Ace of Spades and the Ace of Hearts.

Only last Friday, another man, Ronald Horne, 54, from Peekskill, NY, was also caught with 49 bags of heroin in his car. Are they related? Was it the same product? Again, 49 bags.

The article suggests a possible connection between his death and the ill-will of disgruntled members of the Church of Scientology. You see, his latest film, ‘The Master,’ was loosely based upon the life and work of L. Ron Hubbard, and serves to garner a negative view of this organization.

Of course, the conspiracy mill is churning as we speak, including one which is doing the rounds regarding Hoffman’s incredible depiction – or parody (whichever way you look at it), of the late father of the Church of Scientology and author of Dianetics, L. Ron Hubbard, in the 2012 film entitled, The Master. Hoffman made scores of brilliant film in his career but this one was unique. It was also a film that Scientologists tried to stop from being made. According to studio Svengali extraordinaire Harvey Weinstein, certain high-profile Scientologists in Hollywood laid on the pressure both before and during the making of the film. He stated that, “I’m not going to get into names, but they feel strongly that they think it’s a religion and as such they think the subject matter shouldn’t be explored”

While I make no war with the practice of Dianetics or Scientology, the possibility of a murder conspiracy is nonetheless an interesting train of thought to persue. Especially being that this is ATS.

According to many a chattering forum, Hoffman’s acclaimed lead role in The Master did not do Hollywood’s controversial church any favours – showing it up as a cult and purveyor of quack science. Following news of Hoffman’s death, one blogger remarked: “The Scientology parody film The Master, two of its actors are dead so far. This first was Christopher Evan Welch who plays the sceptic in the film dies in Dec 2013. The second is Philip Seymour Hoffman who played a parody of L.Ron Hubbard died Feb 2014. This is a ritualistic revenge by the Scientology and illuminati for insulting their religion. How many more “overdose” celebrities is it going to take before people wake up”.

Mother charged with son"s murder

The mother of three-year-old Mikaeel Kular has appeared in court charged with his murder.

Rosdeep Kular, 33, appeared in private at Edinburgh Sheriff Court, charged under her married name of Adekoya.

She is also accused of attempting to defeat the ends of justice. She made no plea or declaration and was remanded in custody.

Mikaeel was reported missing from his home in Edinburgh last Thursday, prompting a major search.

His body was found 20 miles away in Kirkcaldy, Fife, late on Friday.

The private hearing at Edinburgh Sheriff Court lasted only a few minutes and no media or members of the public were present.

The case was continued for further examination, with another court appearance expected on 28 January.

Forensic officers have been continuing their investigations at the site where Mikaeel’s body was discovered.

It was removed from woodland behind a property in the town’s Dunvegan Avenue at the weekend.

A house in the street was searched, along with an area of woodland to the rear and side of the property.

Ms Kular and her five children had previously lived at the address. A neighbour told the BBC that Mikaeel and his twin sister were born while the family was living there.

Mikaeel was reported missing from his home in Ferry Gait Crescent, Edinburgh, at about 07:15 on Thursday morning.

More than 200 volunteers from the community joined the emergency services in a huge search operation for the young boy.

Hundreds of people gathered at Muirhouse St Andrew’s Church in Edinburgh on Saturday evening for a service in Mikaeel’s memory.

Many also left flowers and soft toys and lit candles outside his home in Edinburgh.

The BBC’s Damien McGuinness: President Berzins said those responsible must be held to account

The Latvian president has described the collapse of a supermarket in the capital Riga as “murder”.

Andris Berzins said many defenceless people had been killed in “our own made disaster”, and called for foreign experts to investigate what happened.

At least 54 people have died since part of the roof collapsed on Thursday, but it is feared the toll could rise.

Late on Saturday, the last remaining section of the roof caved in, causing panic in nearby streets and buildings.

The BBC’s Damien McGuinness said the force of the collapse caused the neighbouring building from where he was reporting to shake.

Latvia has begun three days of national mourning for the deadliest disaster since the former Soviet republic gained independence in 1991.

“These three days of mourning are very necessary to go from the mindset of helplessness to rethinking what each of us has done so that we can act in practical manner, because this is an event where we must clearly say that this is a large scale murder of many defenceless people and act accordingly,” President Berzins told public LTV broadcaster.

He said an investigation should be held at “maximum speed”.

And he went on to say: “While not undermining the professionalism of our builders, I believe that we should call upon international expertise which is in no way connected with our construction business.

“We cannot call it a natural accident, because nature wasn’t involved. The evening was calm and silent with a little fog. This is our own made disaster.”

At the scene

Latvian families hold each other and cry, as they lay flowers beside a huge pile of rubble. The remains of supermarket shelves and shop goods, such as toilet rolls, poke out from the broken stones.

But alongside the sorrow, a new feeling is starting to emerge. Anger. A fierce debate has broken out about who is to blame.

In a no-holds barred interview given to Latvian television, President Andris Berzins described the tragedy as the “mass murder” of innocent civilians.

He said the tragedy shouldn’t be called an accident because the deaths were not caused by an act of nature.

And he said the criminal probe should be led by independent investigators from abroad – implying that powerful business interests in Latvia are too closely entwined with politics to ensure a fair and honest investigation.

Questions surround whether safety standards were ignored when this building was constructed in 2011; or whether work on a roof garden, which was being built on top of the store, was carried out in a negligent manner.

Fading hopes

Rescue teams have been working round the clock at the Maxima supermarket, digging in the wreckage of the single-storey concrete and glass building to see if anyone is still trapped inside.

They have been periodically turning off all their equipment and asking the families of missing people to phone their relatives so they can pinpoint the ring tones in the debris.

Ten families have told the police that they believe their loved ones could be among the rubble, our correspondent says.

But, 48 hours on, hopes of finding anyone else alive are fading, he adds. By late Saturday the death toll had risen from 52 to 54.

Many people have been laying flowers and lighting candles in commemoration of the dead.

Thirteen firefighters were among some 40 wounded, and 29 people were in hospital as of Saturday morning, the fire and rescue service said.

The initial collapse happened just before 18:00 (16:00 GMT) on Thursday, when the Maxima store was busy with customers.

About 20 minutes later another part of the roof caved in, trapping rescue workers who were trying to reach survivors.

Witnesses said customers tried to run out after the first part of the roof collapsed but the supermarket’s electronic doors closed, trapping them inside.

A rooftop garden with children’s playground was being built on the top of the building. There is speculation it may have been unable to support the large amount of building materials and soil that was believed to be on the roof at the time.

Local media said the building, rented by the Maxima chain, had been awarded a national architecture prize when it was completed in 2011.

But the inquiry will now investigate whether building regulations were broken.

A German prosecutor responsible for hunting down war criminals says murder charges should be filed against 94-year-old Minnesota resident, Michael Karkoc. Mounting evidence suggests the ethnic Ukrainian ordered a village to be burned in 1944.

“We have determined the requirements for murder charges are there,” said a statement from federal prosecutor, Thomas Will. The official will now pass the dossier on Karkoc, who has lived in the US for over 60 years, to state prosecutors, who will decide whether to file charges and request extradition of the former Nazi collaborator.

The news has emerged on the same day as the AP news agency published yet another eyewitness report from a former Karkoc underling, who described his superior ordering SS-collaborator troops to kill over forty people in the village of Chlaniow, as retribution for the killing of a German SS commander.

Karkoc’s family has repeatedly denied the charges.

Michael Karkoc was born in 1919 in Lutsk, currently in western Ukraine, but then a part of Poland. Following the Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact, which carved up Poland between the USSR and Germany, Lutsk was annexed by Soviet troops in 1939.

When Germany invaded the territory during its subsequent war with the Soviet Union, Karkoc, whose combat name was Wolf, first fought for the Germans and then he formed a company in the Ukrainian Self-Defense Legion (USDL).

The SS-directed collaboration unit was engaged in local policing and suppressing anti-Nazi resistance.

In the summer of 1944, resistance fighters killed USDL commander Siegfried Assmuss (who Karkoc described as “irreplaceable” in his memoirs). Ivan Sharko, a soldier who served under Karkoc, told Soviet investigators what happened next, in a 1968-dated file uncovered by AP in the archives of a Ukrainian prosecutor’s office.

“The commander of our company, Wolf, gave the order to cordon off the village [Chlaniow] and check all the houses, and to find and punish the partisans,” said Sharko.

“The legionaries surrounded the homes, set fire to them with matches, or with incendiary bullets, and they shot anyone who was found in the homes or anywhere in the streets. Most of the houses were burned as a result of this action. How many people were killed in all, I don’t know. I personally saw three corpses of peaceful inhabitants who had been killed.”

Between 40 and 80 people are estimated to have died in the massacre, many of them women and children. The testimony matches that of another private in Karkoc’s unit, Vasyl Malazhenski, who told Soviet investigators in 1944 that Karkoc ordered his men to “liquidate all the residents” of Chlaniow.

The interview with Sharko, who died nearly 30 years ago, also links the unit with another “punitive action” in Sagryn the same year. Previous civilian accounts also claimed that Karkoc’s company killed over 20 people in the settlement of Pidhaitsi the year before.

Following the war, Karkoc emigrated to the United States, and took up carpentry, spending the next fifty years living quietly in Minneapolis. On his residency application in 1949 he stated that he performed no military service at all.

Nonetheless, he did little to hide his past. In the mid-1990s he published a memoir, proudly detailing his fights against “Communists”, though he did not describe the murders of any civilians. He has also visited Ukraine, where he was warmly received by nationalists, who see the USDL as part of a struggle against Soviet imperialism.

Since the accusations surfaced this summer, his family has refused to let the media speak to Karkoc.

When presented with the latest testimony from Sharko by AP, Karkoc’s son, Andriy, challenged the reporters to produce more substantial evidence, and called the massacre account “a defamatory and slanderous allegation.”

The United States does not customarily conduct trials of war criminals, though it has previously extradited them to countries such as Poland, Israel and Germany, which still vigorously prosecute World War II participants, no matter how old, as a matter of principle.

Lying on his initial application form could be legally sufficient to earn Karkoc deportation. Alleged Nazi concentration camp guard John Demjanjuk was extradited to Israel on this basis, but after decades of court proceedings in several countries, he died last year. As his appeal to a German court had still not been heard at the time of his death, he was technically never proven guilty.

A U.S. Army sergeant who in 2007 allegedly shot and killed two unarmed deaf Iraqi boys who had no known ties to the insurgents then battling American forces, has now been charged with two counts of premeditated murder.

The story of what Sgt. 1st Class Michael Barbera allegedly did was spelled out in detail last December by the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review. An online version of the newspaper’s 8-page report is posted here. It began its package of stories this way:

“AS SADAH, Iraq — Shortly before noon on March 6, 2007, Small Kill Team leader Michael Barbera rose from his squad’s position in high grass in a palm grove here and shot two teenage cattle herders.

“A short time later, the Army staff sergeant ordered his soldiers to kill a third teenager walking toward them.

“Barbera would report to his superiors that the three dead boys were insurgents operating out of this farming village about 50 miles northeast of Baghdad.

“In reality, Ahmad Khalid al-Timmimi, 15, his brother, Abbas, and their cousin, Muhamed Khaleel Kareem al-Galyani, both 14, were unarmed deaf mutes with no known ties to the insurgency. Their slayings angered most members of Barbera’s squad — decorated combat veterans who reported the killings to Army investigators in Fort Bragg, N.C.”

It was those other members of the squad who took their concerns to Army officials, and later to the Tribune-Review after Army brass initially overruled a recommendation from investigators that Barbera be charged. The soldiers were not only upset by what had happened, but were also convinced that 10 of their comrades were subsequently killed by suicide bombers who were retaliating for the boys’ deaths.

On Friday, officials at Joint Base Lewis-McChord in Washington state announced that Barbera has been charged. The next step, according to The Associated Press, “is an Article 32 investigation which decides if he should be court martialed. No date has been scheduled for the Article 32.”

The Tribune-Review notes that:

“When Barbera’s Article 32 hearing is convened, it will be the latest high-profile military criminal case at Joint Base Lewis-McChord.

“In the past three years, prosecutors there have won convictions against a string of accused war criminals, including Robert Bales, who murdered 16 Afghan villagers; John Russell, who shot to death five soldiers at a mental health clinic in Iraq; and Calvin Gibbs, the leader of another small-kill team in Afghanistan that murdered innocent Afghans and covered up the rampage.”

Prosecutors in Michigan are charging a man with second-degree murder for a Nov. 2 incident in which Renisha McBride, 19, was shot in the face after knocking on his door in Dearborn Heights, a suburb west of Detroit.

Theodore Wafer has reportedly told police that he feared a break-in when he heard sounds on his porch. Officials said Friday that the fatal shot was fired through the house’s open front door, passing through a locked screen door before striking McBride.

Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy announced the charges against Wafer Friday. He also faces charges of manslaughter and possession of a firearm during a felony. Worthy said she believes Wafer owned the weapon legally.

Earlier in the day, officials released a toxicology report showing McBride was found to have high levels of alcohol in her system, along with trace amounts of marijuana. No toxicology test was performed on Wafer, Worthy said.

When asked today whether race is an issue in the case, Worthy said, “No, it’s not relevant at all, not to our charging decision.”

Wafer, a 54-year-old homeowner, has reportedly admitted to shooting McBride in the early hours of Nov. 2 with a 12-gauge shotgun after hearing what he thought were the sounds of someone trying to break into his house. Today, Worthy said the home showed no signs of an attempt to force entry, and that according to the evidence, Wafer opened the front door himself.

Worthy said the evidence suggests McBride knocked on a locked screen door and that the shot that killed her was fired through the screen door. She also said that it doesn’t appear Wafer and McBride knew each other.

An arraignment for Wafer has been scheduled for Friday afternoon. Prosecutors expect him to turn himself in before that appearance.

In announcing the charges, Worthy also described the statute on self-defense in Michigan law.

“There is no duty to retreat when you’re in your own house. But someone who claims self-defense must have an honest and reasonable believe of imminent death” or other significant harm, she said, adding that the person would need to use force to prevent that imminent harm.

While some of the details of what happened that night haven’t been made public, The Detroit Free Press has assembled what may be a rough chronology:

“According to police, McBride’s vehicle struck a parked vehicle in Detroit more than two hours before she was shot. Police said that just before 1 a.m. Nov. 2, a witness called 911 to say a woman was speeding down the street in the area of Bramell and Majestic, hit a parked vehicle, got out of her car and left.

“She later returned to the scene, according to a second 911 call, but was gone when police arrived. That caller told police the woman appeared to be intoxicated.”

Citing sources, the newspaper says McBride was driving a car that was registered in her father’s name.

A Royal Marine has been found guilty by a military court of murdering an injured Afghan insurgent, in what the prosecution called “an execution”.

Two other marines were acquitted at the Military Court Centre in Wiltshire.

The three – Marines A, B and C – had denied murdering the unknown man while on patrol in Helmand province in 2011.

Marine A was convicted after the court martial heard he had shot the man at close range. He faces a mandatory life sentence and was taken into custody.

It is the first time British forces have faced a murder charge in relation to the conflict in Afghanistan, said BBC defence correspondent Caroline Wyatt.

There were tears from the marines’ families as the verdicts were read. Marines B and C are now free to return to military service, the judge said.

Marine B had inadvertently filmed the murder, which happened on 15 September 2011, on his helmet-mounted camera and the footage was shown to the court during the two-week trial.

’9mm pistol’

It showed Marine A shooting the Afghan prisoner with a 9mm pistol, and saying: “There you are. Shuffle off this mortal coil… It’s nothing you wouldn’t do to us.”

He added: “Obviously this doesn’t go anywhere fellas. I just broke the Geneva Convention.”

The Geneva Convention

This international agreement concerning the treatment of captured and wounded prisoners of war was first signed in Geneva in 1864. It was later revised in 1949 and consists of four treaties.

Article three of the third convention rules that members of the armed forces who have laid down their arms or who cannot fight due to sickness, wounds or detention should be “treated humanely, without any adverse distinction founded on race, colour, religion or faith, sex, birth or wealth, or any other similar criteria”.

To this end, it is prohibited to pass sentences on prisoners or carry out executions without a constituted court judgement. Prisoners may not be harmed, degraded, humiliated or taken hostage.

Under the convention, the wounded and sick should be collected and cared for by an impartial humanitarian body, such as the Red Cross.

On Thursday, a recording of a conversation between the marines in the moments before the Afghan was shot was released by the judge.

He had previously rejected an application by the media to release the footage, saying it could be used as propaganda.

During the court martial, prosecutor David Perry told the court: “It was not a killing in the heat and exercise of any armed conflict. The prosecution case is that it amounted to an execution, a field execution.”

Marine A was convicted by a seven-strong board, consisting of officers and non-commissioned officers.

At the time of the killing, he was an experienced sergeant, while Marine C was the most junior of the three. Marine B was new to the Helmand base where marines A and C were based.

Judge Advocate General Jeff Blackett told Marine A: “The mandatory sentence prescribed by law is imprisonment for life.

“This court now has to determine the minimum term you will serve before you are eligible for release.”

He asked for a report to be prepared ahead of sentencing at a later date.

Addressing the other two defendants, the judge added: “Marine B and Marine C, you have been found not guilty of murder and you are now free to return to your normal place of duties.

“The issue of anonymity will be decided at a later date.”

Under attack

The murder took place after a patrol base in Helmand Province had come under attack from small arms fire from two insurgents.

The Afghan prisoner was seriously injured by gunfire fired from an Apache helicopter sent to provide air support, and the marines found him in a field.

In one conversation between Marine A and C about shooting the man, one serviceman is overheard asking “Anyone want to give first aid to this idiot?” before another replies loudly “Nope.”

In another, Marine C was heard asking A if he should shoot the man in the head, but Marine A said that would be too obvious.

Royal Military Police arrested the three marines in October 2012 after video footage was found on a serviceman’s laptop by civilian police in the UK.

They first appeared at the Military Court Centre in Bulford in August, where they pleaded not guilty to murdering the Afghan national contrary to section 42 of the Armed Forces Act 2006.

Two further marines – D and E – had the charges against them dropped in February. An anonymity order granted last year to protect the five men from reprisals remains in place.

Prof Michael Clarke, director of the Royal United Services Institute, said the Ministry of Defence needed to be transparent in cases such as this.

“The only thing the MoD can do is not try to hide in cases that look as bad as this, and they’re going to have to accept that if we fight these wars, there will be cases that we are not very proud of – and that’s not justifying them, I think it’s just a realistic understanding of the ways things work,” he said.

Islamist gunmen murder 50 students at Nigerian college

The Nigerian terrorist group Boko Haram is suspected in a terrorist attack at a rural college that killed at least 50 students – many of them murdered while sleeping.

Suspected Islamist militants stormed a college in northeastern Nigeria and shot dead around 40 male students, some of them while they slept early on Sunday, witnesses said.

State police commissioner Sanusi Rufai said he suspected Boko Haram was behind the attack but gave no details.

The bodies were brought from the college, which is in Gujba, a rural area 30 miles (50km) south of Damaturu and around 130 miles from Nigerian borders with Cameroon and Niger.

The gunmen, thought to be members of rebel sect Boko Haram, attacked one hostel, took some students outside before killing them and shot others trying to flee, people at the scene told Reuters.

“They started gathering students into groups outside, then they opened fire and killed one group and then moved onto the next group and killed them. It was so terrible,” said one surviving student Idris, who would only give his first name.

“They came with guns around 1 a.m. (2400 GMT) and went directly to the male hostel and opened fire on them … The college is in the bush so the other students were running around helplessly as guns went off and some of them were shot down,” said Ahmed Gujunba, a taxi driver who lives by the college.

Boko Haram, which wants to establish an Islamic state in northern Nigeria, has intensified attacks on civilians in recent weeks in revenge for a military offensive against its insurgency.

Several schools, seen as the focus of Western-style education and culture, have been targeted.

Boko Haram and spin-off Islamist groups like the al Qaeda-linked Ansaru have become the biggest security threat in Africa’s second largest economy and top oil exporter.

Western governments are increasingly worried about the threat posed by Islamist groups across Africa, from Mali and Algeria in the Sahara, to Kenya in the east, where Somalia’s al-Shabaab fighters killed at least 67 people in an attack on a Nairobi shopping mall a week ago.

Bodies were recovered from dormitories, classrooms and outside in the undergrowth on Sunday, a member of staff at the college told Reuters, asking not to be named.

A Reuters witness counted 40 bloody corpses piled on the floor at the main hospital in Yobe state capital Damaturu on Sunday, mostly of young men believed to be students.

Is the rise of al-Shabab and Boko Haram attributable to our emphasis on core al-Qaeda groups in Pakistan and Iraq? Some analysts think that we could have assisted the Kenyans and Nigerians with tamping down these groups before they became as well armed and numerous as they are today if we had looked at  Islamist terrorism as a global problem rather than a concentrating on major al-Qaeda affiliates in a few countries.

For the moment, the African terrorist groups appear content to murder people close to home. But as they grow, they may become more ambitious and begin to threaten American interests directly. Assisting African states in dealing with these groups should be on the front burner of our foreign policy agenda.
