US Irate With Israeli Defense Minister Comments

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Obama administration on Wednesday vented its anger at the Israeli defense minister’s public criticism of the U.S. and his personal insults of Secretary of State John Kerry.

In a new sign of tension between top officials of the two allies as Washington tries to forge an Israeli-Palestinian peace deal and negotiate with Iran over its nuclear program, Kerry called Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to protest recent remarks by Defense Minister Moshe Yaalon.

Yaalon this week accused the Obama administration of being weak on Iran and questioned its commitment toIsrael’s security. Previously, Yaalon has criticized Kerry for being unrealistic and naive in trying to forge an Israeli-Palestinian peace deal.

State Department spokeswoman Jen Psaki said Yaalon’s remarks were “not constructive” and “inconsistent” with the close relationship between the U.S. and Israel.

Psaki repeated Obama and Kerry’s oft-stated position that the U.S. commitment to Israel’s security is “unshakable,” outlined several main elements of the longstanding U.S.-Israeli defense relationship. And she noted that Netanyahu himself has spoken of an “unprecedented level” of security cooperation between the countries.

“The comments of the defense minister are completely inconsistent with that,” Psaki told reporters. “So, it is certainly confusing to us why Defense Minister Yaalon would continue his pattern of making comments that don’t accurately represent the scope of our close partnership on a range of security issues and on the enduring partnership between the United States and Israel.”

She would not say if Kerry had demanded an apology of Yaalon, declined to characterize Netanyahu’s response to Kerry’s protests and referred questions about that to the Israeli government.

In Israel, an official in Yaalon’s office said Netanyahu and Yaalon had “discussed the recent reports” and added that the minister “will clarify what was said in his talks with the Americans.” The official spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to discuss the diplomatic matter with the media by name.

In remarks quoted in Israeli reports on Tuesday, Yaalon said Israel cannot depend on the United States to lead any action against Iran’s nuclear program and can only rely on itself.

“We thought that the one who needs to lead the campaign against Iran is the U.S.,” Yaalon was quoted by the daily Haaretz as saying during a lecture at Tel Aviv University on Monday.

He also disparaged American influence and power, noting the ongoing crisis over Ukraine and Russia’s annexation of Crimea.

Yaalon has made controversial comments about Washington in the past. In January, he was quoted as saying that U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry was “obsessive” and “messianic” over his Mideast peace efforts.

Google-bye to privacy? Users’ faces, names and comments are going in ads

Following in the footsteps of Facebook, anything you post, like, comment or review on Google or tied-in services can in future be used in product endorsement ads.

It means that starting Nov. 11, when Google’s new terms of service go live, all content (video, brands or products) Google+ and YouTube users publicly endorse by clicking on the “+1” or “Like” button can appear in an ad with that person’s image.

Such “shared endorsements” ads will also appear on millions of other websites that are part of Google’s display advertising network.

Google+ users will have the ability to opt out by turn the setting to “off,” but at the same time it “doesn’t change whether your Profile name or photo may be used in other places such as Google Play.”

“For users under 18, their actions won’t appear in shared endorsements in ads and certain other contexts,” the announcement on Google’s website reads.

Google’s move follows a similar change Facebook imposed in August. There it is called “sponsored stories.” It works almost exactly the same way – a recommendation made through the social network’s “like” button appears as advertising endorsement on a friend’s Facebook page.

While both companies say the service will be helpful for users, Google’s revised terms of service have again raised privacy concerns.

“It’s a huge privacy problem,” Reuters cited Marc Rotenberg, the director of online privacy group EPIC, as saying.

He has called on the US Federal Trade Commission to investigate whether the policy change violates a 2011 consent order that prohibits Google from retroactively changing users’ privacy settings.

The announcement also was harshly criticized on Google’s profile, with users expressing dismay and disappointment. Some users suggested they might pull down all their current pictures or change profile pictures.

"Homeland" star "floored" by Biden comments

Morena Baccarin, who plays the wife of Marine POW-turned-terrorist Nick Brody on the Showtime series “Homeland,” said she was “floored” that Vice President Joe Biden talks about the show.

“Apparently, in his Monday morning security meetings, Vice President Biden will talk about the show, how realistic it is. I was floored by that — here are the leaders of our nation talking about our show!” Baccarin said in Los Angeles Confidential magazine’s Fall Fashion issue.

Baccarin, who earned an Emmy nomination for her role as Jessica Brody, also talked about the success of the series.

“You pinch yourself for a long time,” she said. “Every time our season comes out, I kind of feel like, ‘OK — this is the one that everybody’s going to hate. This is where we go to, like, being the show that everybody doesn’t like …’ And then it doesn’t seem to happen.”

Allen West Challenges Bill Cosby"s Comments on Muslim Families

Former Rep. Allen West is taking issue with comments made by comedian Bill Cosby suggesting that black American families should emulate Muslim families.

“Bill Cosby said we should b more like Muslims. U mean honor killings, beheadings, suicide bombings? Hope ur kidding sir,” the Florida Republican said Monday, taking to his Twitter account to criticize a Cosby op-ed piece that appeared in the New York Post on Saturday.

Under the subtitle, ‘What Muslims Get Right,’ Cosby wrote, “I’m a Christian. But Muslims are misunderstood. Intentionally misunderstood. We should be more like them. They make sense, especially with their children. There is no other group like the Black Muslims, who put so much effort into teaching children the right things. They don’t smoke, they don’t drink or overindulge in alcohol, they protect their women, they command respect.

“And what do these other people do?” he continued. “They complain about them, they criticize them. We’d be a better world if we emulated them. We don’t have to become black Muslims, but we can embrace the things that work.”

West doubled down on his criticism of Cosby on Tuesday, using Twitter once again.

“Wonder if Cosby appreciates discipline & family values of Syrians who killed 15 yr old?” he tweeted, in reference to a boy who was executed by al-Qaida-affiliated fighters after he was accused of disrespecting Islam’s Prophet Muhammad.

Cosby’s comments about Muslim families were made in the context that changes in the black community need to start with the strengthening of family values.

“The revolution is in the home,” he wrote.
