Callout for crowd-sourced research on UK military industrial complex

ONN wants input towards  a crowd-sourced project that explains the range and impact of the UK government sponsored DSEi arms fair. 

In late February, a handful of activists will go to court charged with blocking the highway outside the DSEi arms fair. Yet their action was trying to prevent crimes against humanity, including the sale of torture equipment and weapons that kill indiscriminately.

Here is more details on the Where is the Wrong campaign that will effectively put the arms trade on trial.

In support of this we want to create a crowd sourced document/ article / collection of works focusing on: What crimes against humanity are facilitated by the DSEi arms fair?

Below is an indicative list of crimes committed at the recent fairs, but there is far more research that could be done, for instance on the firms that attend the arms fair, on where these weapons are sold, on the revolving door between Whitehall and the military industrial complex, on other countries invited…

Arnaud Montebourg, Minister of Industrial Renewal of France, has a new target in his sights, the French public procurement group UGAP.

The Union of Public Purchasing Groups (UGAP), the French public procurement centre operates under the supervision of the Ministries of Economy and Finance and the Ministry of Education. UGAP’s overall objective is to strengthen the social and environmental performance of public procurement, without increasing the cost of services offered.

Alice Piednoir, Sustainable Development Policy Officer & Purchasing Manager, says “We centralise applications and mutualise costs in order to propose offers that are financially successful. We ensure that the inclusion of social and environmental requirements in our bidding do not cause additional costs to the services offered.”

MILAN (Reuters) – The management of Italy’s Alitalia is reviewing the lossmaking airline’s industrial plan, the chief executive of one of its key lenders, UniCredit (CRDI.MI), said on Monday.




Speaking on the sidelines of UniCredit’s results presentation, Federico Ghizzoni said he had no indication yet of whether top shareholder Air France-KLM (AIRF.PA) would participate in a 300 million euro ($ 402.23 million) capital increase.




Shareholders have until midnight on Thursday to decide whether to participate in Alitalia’s cash call.




Alitalia said earlier on Monday that it had called a board meeting for Wednesday, but declined to comment on the agenda for the meeting or whether a revision to the company’s industrial plan would be discussed.

Washington State Will Keep Pushing For Industrial Hemp

Industrial hemp has gained a lot of ground this year, with legislation introduced and moving in several states, and laws being signed in Colorado and Vermont already. In fact, just last week farmers in Colorado harvested the first U.S. hemp crop in decades – and they did it in complete disregard for federal law. Hemp is such a versatile plant – with uses ranging from food to textiles – and is so heavily imported by the U.S., that it simply makes no sense not to grow it.  

HB 1888 would allow for the production of industrial hemp in Washington state. The bill has already made it through two public hearings, and is currently being held in the House Appropriations Committee, where it ran into a last minute deadline this spring. The bill’s sponsor, Representative Matt Shea, has spoken repeatedly about the many uses of hemp, and told me in April that “this is a phenomenal bill, expanding freedom, allowing jobs to be created – a new market here in Washington state – the potential state economic impact is in the tens of millions if not hundreds of millions.”

This bill identifies industrial hemp as an agricultural product which can be grown, produced, possessed, and commercially traded in the state. Pursuant, of course, to the provisions of the law. The passage of such would not only be a huge boon to Washington state, but act as another domino in the chain of states who are taking back power over what they can grow and produce within their own borders.

What you can do:

1) The next legislative session begins on January 13th, and it will be important that we contact the House Appropriations Committee to make sure they are planning on pushing this bill forward. The hearing in April went well, but no vote was taken. Please ask the committee members to send this bill to the floor for a full vote.

2) Contact your legislators. Ask them for a positive vote when this bill comes to the floor. As I’ve stated before, it is not too early to begin dropping emails, snail mail, or even leaving phone messages for our reps. We want the important issues to be front and center from the first hour of the session. You can find their information here.

3) Share, share, share! Post information on Facebook, tell your friends and family about the benefits of industrial hemp in our state – get the word out. And again, help equip your friends with bill and legislator info.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average Is Adorable, Should Never Change

The Dow Jones Industrial Average announced today that it is removing Alcoa, Bank of America, and Hewlett-Packard from its 30-company index. Goldman Sachs, Nike, and Visa are in.

Everybody’s snarking on this move, most eloquently Neil Irwin:

[The Dow] is weighted not based on the size or importance of the company, but by its per-share price. So IBM, with its $ 184 per-share price, counts more than four times as much as Coca-Cola, at $ 39 a share, even though the two have about the same stock market capitalization.

Okay, yes, the DJIA is an overrated symbol. But it’s a fun overrated symbol. The economy is impossibly complicated, and even sophisticated attempts to summarize its health and evolution are, inevitably, oversimplifications. The Dow, which limits its particular oversimplification to the publicly traded stock of 30 companies, is constantly hauling new companies into the boat before casting them overboard. In 2008, Bank of America and Kraft replaced Altria and Honeywell. Four years later, Bank of America and Kraft have been replaced, themselves. This is useful, how?

I’d like to propose that the Dow Jones Industrial Average become the Dow Jones Industrial Archive. Let’s just pick 30 stocks and never change them again. It wouldn’t be the best reflection of an evolving economy. In fact, it would be a terrible reflection of an evolving economy. But that’s okay, because we have the Standard & Poor’s 500 index and Wilshire 5000, which are much better simplifications for traders and readers.

Instead, the Dow Jones Industrial Archive would be a beautiful reflection of the economy we thought we had, but are instead leaving behind.

When the Dow Jones Industrial Average launched in 1896, it smelled like a turn-of-the-century factory farm — nothing but oil, iron, cows, and cotton. You know. America. 

Today, practically all of these companies — Tennessee Coal & Iron, American Cotton Oil, Distilling & Cattle Feeding — have been gobbled up by conglomerates that you have and haven’t heard of. Only GE remains. Only the U.S. Leather trust is essentially defunct.

But I like that. We had an industrial-dominated economy, and now we don’t. New time, new index. DJIA II for the auto and aerospace economy. DJIA III for the computer/financial economy. And so on.

The value to creating oversimplified theories of the economy is planting a stake in the ground and learning some time later why and how you were wrong. The Dow isn’t a very good index. It would be a better time-capsule.

Years ago it began as concern among health-conscious people about the substance’s presence in toothpaste. Apparently, toothpaste manufacturers were paying attention; In the past it was nearly impossible to find toothpastes free of sodium fluoride, but luckily that trend has reversed. Much has been made recently in alternate news publications of cities around the world adding fluoride to the drinking water, and the logical objections of a well-informed citizenry. Obviously, many people know that fluoride is bad, but what is it really? Read on to find out.

Sodium fluoride defined: A “pickling” agent with many industrial applications

Sodium fluoride (SF) is an inorganic chemical compound with the formula NaF on the periodic table. It is made by neutralizing hydrofluoric acid or hexafluorosilicic acid. It appears as a colorless, solid white crystal which provides the fluoride ion for mostly industrial applications. It holds the EU classifications of “Xi” for Irritant, and “T” for Toxic. Sodium fluoride is a pickling (preservative) agent and inorganic poison and therefore commonly used in pesticides, fungicides and insecticides (this is because sodium fluoride prevents the growth of fungi, bacteria and mold). Sodium fluoride is used in the manufacturing of steel and aluminum metals. It’s also used as a metal surface treatment and cleaning agent, for glass frosting, as a wood preservative, and for pH adjustment in industrial textile processing.

Potential adverse health effects of fluoride exposure

Ingestion of fluoride in high enough doses or low doses over a long period of time is known to cause varying ailments. Some of these are:

- Stomach pain or irritation
- Nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite
- General weakness
- Risk of convulsions
- Ulcers
- Cardiac arrhythmia
- Hypocalcemia with nervous system disorders (tetany)
- Dental fluorosis* (discoloring of teeth)
- Skeletal fluorosis* (adverse changes in bone structure or bone strength)
- Development of Osteosarcoma, a rare bone cancer

(*Fluorosis is the condition of the formation of deposits of fluorides in bones and teeth)

Chronic exposure of a known-toxin and bio-accumulative substance

Taking into consideration the main uses for fluoride and the concept of fluorosis, it begins to appear to be a ludicrous concept to consciously add a toxic substance such as fluoride into drinking water or toothpaste and mouthwash. As illustrated above, fluorosis can occur over long periods of time with low doses of ingested fluoride. This is a surefire sign of a bio-accumulative toxic substance, i.e., a substance that builds up in our bodies over time. At first, bio-accumulative toxins have little adverse effect on health and well-being, but down the road, as the toxin accumulates in tissues, the adverse health effects begin to materialize, with potentially disastrous results.

(CNN) — North Korea said Wednesday it will allow South Korean companies to return to the Kaesong industrial zone, where it had suspended activity during a period of high tension earlier this year.

The North said it would lift measures it imposed in April that halted operations at the shared manufacturing complex, the state-run Korean Central News Agency reported.

Pyongyang will guarantee the safety of South Korean personnel in the zone, the statement from the Committee for the Peaceful Reunification of Korea said.
