WH Report"s Shocking Stat: 7% of College Men Admit to Attempting Rape, Most of Them Multiple Times

Obama announces task force to deal with epidemic of college sexual assault, says it"s personal.

A White House report released Wednesday brings to light to a shocking statistic: 7 percent of college men admit they have attempted rape, 63 percent of those have been involved in multiple assaults, averaging 6 each. And those are the ones that admit it.

No wonder then, the shocking number of victims: 1 in every 5 female students are said to be sexually assaulted, while only 1 in 8 report the attacks.

The report states that nearly 22 million American women and 1.6 million men have been raped, resulting in devastating aftereffects, such as depression, which can lead to substance abuse and a host of physical ailments that take their toll for years afterwards.

On Wednesday, President Obama vowed to take on the epidemic, and announced he had formed a White House task force to study how best to do it.

“No one is more at risk of being raped or sexually assaulted than women at our nation’s colleges and universities,” the report by the White House Council on Women and Girls read, highlighting both the devastating statistical probability of being sexually assaulted, as well as the low number of reported cases because of lingering cultural stigma.

The report also linked campus sexual assaults to drinking and drug use that can often incapacitate victims at various student parties—often at the hands of someone they know. In his announcement, the President emphasized the importance of changing the attitudes of those who perpetrate sexual asssault.

“We need to encourage young people, men and women, to realize that sexual assault is simply unacceptable,” President Obama said, pointing out that the issue affects him both as president and as the father of two daughters. “They’re going to have to summon the bravery to stand up and say so, especially when the social pressure to keep quiet or to go along can be very intense.”

The President"s emphasis on exerting pressure on schools is due to what is seen as an historic failure to respond appropriately to campus assaults. In 2011, Amherst College student  Angie Epifano found her campus to be far from sympathetic when she reported a dorm room rape. She has said school counselors questioned her definition of rape, refused her request to change dorm rooms to get away from her attacker, and even had police take her to a psychiatric ward.

The Associated Press reports that the Education Department has fined several universities for their failure to accurately report sexual assaults, most notably in 2006 when Eastern Michigan University was fined a then-record $ 357,000 for not revealing that a student had been sexually assaulted and murdered in her dorm room.

Organizations like Students Active for Ending Rape (a nonprofit group that works with students in an effort to push for major policy reform regarding sexual assault) said that more than 80 percent of colleges inadequately address sexual assault on campus—nearly one quarter fail completely to deal with it, and a third don’t even comply with the Clery Act, which required colleges and universities to publically record their crime statistics each year.

President Obama announced that the task force, made up of officials in the administration, has 90 days to come up with recommendations for colleges on how to prevent assault, and how to be held accountable should they fail to do so.

Docs warn of shocking risk during "mud runs"

Diet & fitness

tough mudder

The American College of Emergency Physicians

A participant runs through the Electroshock Therapy obstacle during a Tough Mudder.

Here is some news that may (or may not) shock you, pun totally intended: Those muddy obstacle course races everyone seems to be doing lately can be dangerous, especially when they involve obstacles charged with 10,000 volts of electricity, emergency physicians say.

Doctors confirmed this in a series of case studies looking at the injuries that happened during a Tough Mudder event in Philadelphia earlier this year. Of the 38 racers treated in the emergency department over that weekend in June, about half suffered electrical injuries.

That’s because this particular event features two obstacles that require runners to brave their way through electroshock: There’s the Electric Eel, in which participants “slide on stomach through frigid water or along layer of ice while shocks hang overhead,” and there’s Electroshock Therapy, in which they “run through a field of live wires (up to 10,000 V).”

“The types of injuries were ones that we had never seen before at a social gathering or sports-related event, the electrical injuries in particular,” says Dr. Marna Rayl Greenberg, director of emergency medicine research at Lehigh Valley Hospital in Allentown, Pa. “I have been practicing for over 20 years, and I have never seen an event that shocked people. It took me a while to understand what was happening to them.”

Endurance obstacle course races — or MOB (mud, obstacles, beer) runs, as they’re sometimes called — have exploded in popularity in the last few years. Take the Tough Mudder: Since it started in 2010, the 10- to 12-mile race has expanded from three to 35 locations, and has had 700,000 participants worldwide. But there’s also the Warrior Dash and the Diva Dash, and even a 48-hour event called The Death Race (you can find out more about that one at www.youmaydie.com).

The perceived danger, obviously, is part of the appeal: People enter these things to prove to themselves that they can withstand discomfort, and conquer their own fear, for the duration of the race. It’s similar to the reasons people enter marathons, or triathlons, or ultramarathons. But the difference, Greenberg says, is that you can train your body to prepare for a race marathon — but there’s not exactly a safe way to prepare for being shocked with 10,000 volts.

Competitors swim through mud underneath electrified wires on July 15, 2012, during the Tough Mudder at Mt. Snow in West Dover, Vt. The Tough Mudder is a nine-mile endurance event in which competitors run through a military-style obstacle course complete with mud, water and fire.

Competitors swim through mud underneath electrified wires on July 15, 2012, during the Tough Mudder at Mt. Snow in West Dover, Vt. The Tough Mudder is a nine-mile endurance event in which competitors run through a military-style obstacle course complete with mud, water and fire.

The authors decided to put the series of five case studies together after their weekend in the emergency department, when they saw 38 people injured during the weekend’s Tough Mudder in Philadelphia in June. The patients ranged in age from 18- to 46-years-old; 22 were men and 16 were women.

“One of the patients, 18-years-old, experienced 13 shocks — he essentially had a heart attack, inflammation of the heart. It was a warm day, and they’d already been through mud and heat and sweat,” Greenberg says.

Tough Mudder declined to comment on this story, although its website says participants are allowed to skip obstacles.”Anyone who is at risk of our electric-related obstacles (due to medical concerns) or cannot swim (and would have a difficult time in water) is strongly advised to skip these obstacles, as safety is held at a premium at Tough Mudder.”

But electrical injury expert Michael Morse is very curious to know how the 10,000 volts in the race are actually created. “It could be capacitive discharge; it could be static shock,” Morse says. “What I can tell you is they’re not delivering 10,000 volts through a power line; that would kill people.”

Even the static shocks created by rubbing your feet across the carpet carry a few thousand volts, Morse explains, it’s just that the shock dissipates very quickly. He thinks the Tough Mudder electroshocks must be created from something similar.

“It’s high voltage, but the energy from the shock must dissipate extremely rapidly,” says Morse, a professor in the University of San Diego’s Shiley-Marcos School of Engineering. “This is the only way I could see them doing this without causing injury, or without causing a lot of injury.

“The problem is that humans are highly variable,” Morse says.

Adding water and mud to the equation also increases the risk of electrical injury. Skin resistance, our natural protection to electricity, is highest when our skin is dry. “When you make skin wet, resistance plummets, which increases the risk of electrical injury dramatically,” Morse says.

One of the case studies was of a 31-year-old man, who had “possible seizure activity” at the event. And a 41-year-old man was admitted to the emergency department after fainting at the race; he’d suffered a head injury and had electrical burns on his face.

But if running and training for obstacle course races have become your favorite way of staying fit, you don’t have to stop. Dr. Howard Mell, spokesman for the American College of Emergency Physicians, says the electrical shocks will make participants uncomfortable, but they’re not strong enough to be dangerous.

“It almost has that haunted house effect to it — it appears to be more dangerous than it really is,” says Mell, who is training for a Tough Mudder next year. (He did suffer an injury during his training — a stress fracture while running, which, he says, beautifully illustrates the idea that accidents can and do happen during any athletic endeavor.) “There’s no question that the race is designed to create discomfort, and the idea of it is, ‘Hey, I can overcome this.’”

He suggests that participants make sure any race they take on — mud run or a local 5k — has proper medical personnel at the event. “You want paramedics for scrapes and bruises, and CPR-trained personnel there for advanced life support,” he says. Make sure to have a copy of any important medical information about yourself with you during the race in case you suffer a problem — there’s usually an area to write those kinds of details on the back of the race bib.

And definitely don’t take one of these endurance events on without training first.

“While the study author is accurate in saying you can’t really train for something like the electrical shock itself, you can train for the skills you need to make it through,” says Jessica Matthews, an exercise physiologist with the American Council on Exercise.

For the Electric Eel obstacle in the Tough Mudder, Matthews recommends stomach crawls, and she designed a workout for TODAY.com:

stomach crawl

American Council on Exercise

1. To perform this move, lie on your stomach placing your hands in front of your shoulders, turning your fingers to face one another with your elbows bent and forearms resting on the floor.

2. Keeping your core engaged and your shoulder blades pulled back and down, slide your left knee forward, bending your knee as you move it out to the side of your body until its level with your hips.

3. At the same time, slide your right arm forward while keep your elbow bent. Start by covering a distance of 30 feet, alternating moving opposite limbs forward — right leg and left arm, then left leg and right arm — keeping your body on the floor the entire time. (Some rotation of your torso will naturally occur with this movement, but just keep in mind that on race day high voltage will be overhead.)

Shocking Video – Obamacare Architect, Ezekiel Emmanuel, Blames Fox News for Obamacare’s Dismal Rollout & Glitch-Plagued Website!

Last night, Fox News’ Megyn Kelly asked Obamacare’s Architect, Ezekiel Emmanuel, to explain healthcare.gov’s failed rollout.

Emmanuel didn’t stop at saying Team Obama couldn’t be blamed for Obamacare’s initial failure; he also said everything wrong with Obamacare is really Fox News’ fault!

Megyn answered Ezekiel’s outrageous charge with her usual calm, cool, collected, quick-wit, stating:

“I don’t think Fox News had anything to do with the rollout of HealthCare.gov.  As far as I know, we didn’t touch that website…”

As you watch time index 8:20-8:40, remember Ezekiel Emmanuel isn’t just Obamacare’s architect, he’s also the brother of Chicago Mayor and Obama-Confidant, Rahm Emmanuel…

Shocking Video – The Former Face of Healthcare.gov Says She Isn’t an American Citizen, Hasn’t Signed up for Obamacare, & Hasn’t Even Been Paid!

Meet Adriana, the Former Face of Obamacare…

Adriana, whose face was plastered on healthcare.gov’s front page from Oct. 1-31, shared her story with ABC News last night.

According to ABC, Adriana is married with a 21 month-old son.  She’s from Columbia, isn’t a U.S. citizen, and hasn’t signed up for Obamacare, though she is eligible to receive federal health benefits since she’s lived in the U.S. legally for six years.

She also expressed frustration with the fact that the government hasn’t even paid her for the use of her image on the Obamacare website.

Adriana told Health and Human Services (HHS) officials to remove her image from the controversial web portal because she claims to consistently get bullied by people who don’t agree with Obamacare.

The Obama Administration, however, denies her assertion that her likeness was removed at her request.

Instead, a HHS spokesman told ABC that the picture was replaced with more generic images because, “Healthcare.gov is a dynamic website.”

The Next Great Economic Crisis - 12 Shocking Clues About What It Will Look Like In America

The collapse of American society is accelerating. For the moment, much of our social decay is being masked by the tremendous level of affluence that we are experiencing. It has been reported that 4 out of every 5 adults in the United States “struggle with joblessness, near-poverty or reliance on welfare for at least parts of their lives”, but in general Americans still enjoy a debt-fueled standard of living that is far beyond what most of the rest of the world enjoys. When that debt-fueled standard of living permanently disappears, it is going to unleash chaos unlike anything that America has ever seen before. Right now, economic conditions in this country are not anywhere close to where they were before 2008, but this is just the beginning. We are in the midst of an ongoing economic collapse which is going to get much, much worse in the years ahead. When the next major wave of the economic crisis strikes, millions of people are going to become extremely desperate. And desperate people do desperate things. We are already starting to see this play out all over the nation, but this is only a preview of coming attractions. What we are going to witness in future years is going to be almost too horrible for words.

Crime-Scene-Photo-by-JRLibbySo how can I be so sure that this is going to happen? After all, the United States didn’t descend into complete and utter chaos during the Great Depression of the 1930s. Wouldn’t an economic depression unfold in a similar manner today?

Unfortunately, a lot has changed since then. A lot more Americans were self-sufficient back in those days, and the truth is that the character of our nation has been rotting and decaying for decades. In a previous article, I described it this way…

“We are simply not the same country that we used to be. Americans are proud, selfish, greedy, arrogant, ungrateful, treacherous and completely addicted to entertainment and pleasure. Our country is literally falling apart all around us, but most Americans are so plugged into entertainment that they can’t even be bothered to notice what is happening.”

Just last weekend, there were “

What would have happened if there had been an extended outage or if the political crisis in D.C. had caused food stamps to be completely cut off at some point in November?

Let’s be thankful that we did not have to find out.

But even though major food stamps riots may have been averted (at least for now), there are a whole host of other signs that America is going to become a very unstable place during the next major economic downturn. The following are 12 shocking clues about what America will look like when the next great economic crisis strikes…

#1 Would you continue to work as a bus driver if you were stabbed while driving or if a passenger poured urine all over you? Just check out what has been going on in Detroit lately

After two drivers were recently stabbed and another had urine poured on her by an angry rider, union officials representing bus drivers for the city of Detroit are set to protest in front of city hall at 10 a.m. on Monday.

#2 We are starting to see a lot of “group crimes” happen all over America. For example, just the other day in Brooklyn, New York a gang of 10 young thugs dragged a young couple out of their vehicle and brutally beat them…

Ronald Russo was dragged to the ground. Then he was punched and kicked in the head. He felt more blows all over his body, investigators said. He suffered a fractured nose, a broken septum, a blood clot and abrasions to his shoulder. He was treated and released from Beth Israel Medical Center.

In the midst of the attack, there was a steady chorus of epithets. “White motherf—–!” screamed the attackers, who ranged in age from 12 to 18.

Alana Russo, 30, was calling 911 when the 12-year-old girl pulled the woman’s hair and threw her to the ground. The victim’s head slammed into the concrete. She suffered a black eye, bleeding and difficulty breathing, prosecutors said, but she refused medical attention.

#3 A lot of people assume that they are perfectly safe inside their own vehicles but that is not the case at all. A story in the New York Post about a gang of bikers that ruthlessly hunted down a young family that was driving an SUV made national headlines a few weeks ago…

A gang of bikers terrorized a dad driving with his wife and baby daughter on the West Side Highway — chasing after their SUV and then dragging the man out and beating him to a pulp in front of his horrified family, authorities said.

When the bikers caught up with this family they showed the father of the baby daughter absolutely no mercy…

One biker can be seen on the video ripping off his helmet and using it to bash in Lien’s driver’s-side window.

The crew pummeled Lien on the pavement in front of his wife, Rosalyn Ng, and their 2-year-old daughter, police sources said.

Lien, who also was slashed during the melee, was rushed to Columbia University Medical Center. He needed stitches to his face and chest and had two black eyes.

#4 We are living at a time when hearts are becoming very cold. Some Americans are becoming so desperate for money that they will do almost anything to get it. In fact, one couple in Tennessee has actually been charged with selling their four daughters for use in sex films

An East Tennessee couple is facing a list of charges, accused of selling their children to take part in sex films.

Connie Sue McCall, 40, and her husband, Ronnie Lee McCall, 61, of Johnson City have been charged by a federal grand jury.

Paperwork shows the couple was selling their four daughters.

Prosecutors say the four girls were between the ages of 5 and 16 when this happened.

Could you imagine such a thing happening in your neighborhood?

Perhaps it is happening, but you just don’t know that it is going on.

#5 And it is not only older people that are having their hearts grow cold. It is happening to young people too. Last week, a 17-year-old girl was caught carrying around a dead baby (which she probably gave birth to) in a shopping bag in a Victoria’s Secret store right in the heart of Manhattan

The dead baby found in the teen’s shopping bag at a Victoria’s Secret store in Manhattan was born alive and then asphyxiated, police said Friday, as the macabre discovery turned toward a possible homicide case.

Police believe 17-year-old Tiana Rodriguez gave birth to the baby at a friend’s house and that the infant was later asphyxiated. However, the city medical examiner’s office said an autopsy was inconclusive, and more tests were needed.

Who does something like that?

#6 Sadly, a lot of mothers appear to be losing the natural affection that they should have for their children. Just check out another incident that happened in New York City recently

So much for no child left behind.

A stroller-toting mom who used her 1-year-old son as cover during a massive candy shoplifting spree at a downtown Duane Reade used the tot’s pram as a battering ram when workers confronted her — and then ran away without the baby, the NYPD said.

#7 One of the clearest signs that American society is decaying is the fact that groups of kids are banding together and agreeing to commit absolutely horrible crimes. We have seen this with the “flash mob” robberies that are plaguing many cities, but what is even worse is when groups of kids band together to commit violent acts. In Pennsylvania recently, a group of teens cheered on attackers as they beat up a 15-year-old girl…

Speaking exclusively to CBS 3, a 15-year-old high school student, whose identity we are concealing, described a terrifying attack by a gang of at least nine teenage boys as she was leaving an Interboro High School football game Monday night.

The teenage victim described first being taunted by the attackers, who followed her down a neighborhood street, cursing and spitting at her, before she was repeatedly kicked and punched, suffering at least one blow to her head.

The attackers even tried to throw her in front of a passing vehicle and nobody tried to stop them…

The victim says as at least two of the teenagers pummeled her, the others cheered them on shouting, “Come on, let’s get her!” At one point, the victim says, the gang tried to throw her under the wheels of a passing car, which swerved, narrowly missing her.

What is happening to this country?

#8 We have also been hearing about a lot of “gang rapes” lately as well. The following is an excerpt from a first-hand account from a 14-year-old girl in Missouri that experienced this type of horrible ordeal…

About five shots tall, I drank it. I guess I didn’t know how badly it would mess me up. But the boys who gave it to me did.

Then it was like I fell into a dark abyss. No light anywhere. Just dark, dense silence — and cold. That’s all I could ever remember from that night. Apparently, I was there for not even an entire hour before they discarded me in the snow.

You can read the rest of her sobering story right here.

Are you starting to understand why I am so convinced that we have a major problem with our young men in America today?

Instead of raising young gentlemen, we are raising wild animals that seem to have very little self-control.

#9 And sometimes the public does not do anything to stop sexual assaults even when they happen on public streets. In a recent incident in Athens, Ohio, not only did the public not stop a sexual assault, many actually took photos of the assault and posted them on social media websites…

Horrific photos of an alleged rape in progress have been shared on social media after crowds at a college homecoming celebration chose to take pictures and videos of the sex act rather than stopping it.

Would such a thing have happened in our country 50 years ago?

Of course not.

We need to come to grips with how far we have fallen.

#10 In America today, young kids can beat a homeless man to death and it barely even makes a blip on the news. I’ll bet hardly any of you have heard about what happened recently to a homeless man in New Jersey

Three teenagers were in custody Saturday morning, on charges of beating a homeless man to his death in Hoboken, N.J.

As CBS 2’s Janelle Burrell reported, Hudson County Acting Prosecutor Gaetano T. Gregory said two 13-year-olds and a 14-year-old were charged in the Sept. 10 death of Ralph Eric Santiago, 46.

What would cause 13-year-olds and 14-year-olds to behave so savagely?

Could it be because we are raising them in a society where basic morality is not taught any longer?

#11 Our young people certainly do not have much respect for the very elderly anymore either. Instead, the elderly are looked at as “weak” and “easy prey”. Just check out what recently happened to a 70-year-old man in upstate New York…

A 70-year-old man was seriously injured early Saturday morning after being attacked outside of a 7-Eleven in Syracuse.

Police say James Gifford had just left the store at the intersection of Valley Drive and South Street just after 6:00 a.m. and was attacked by a group of five or six black males, according to Syracuse Police.

Police also said this appears to be an unprovoked incident with an innocent victim.

#12 In this day and age, it is very hard to tell who you can trust. You might meet someone on the street and they might smile and seem very nice, but inside they may be full of all kinds of garbage. For example, just check out what one man in the Boston area planned to do

A Boston-area man, who was planning to kidnap children, lock them in a basement dungeon, rape and eat them, should be imprisoned for at least 27 years, federal authorities said in court documents filed this week.

Geoffrey Portway pleaded guilty in May to distribution and possession of child pornography and solicitation to commit a crime of violence, according to court documents. He is scheduled to be sentenced on September 17.

“Portway has pled guilty to some of the most vile and heinous crimes known to our society,” federal prosecutors wrote in a sentencing recommendation.

This is how twisted and perverted our society has become.

A lot of Americans believe that if we could just elect “the right politicians” or if we could just change our economic system or if we could just fix one particular issue that everything would be right in America again.

Unfortunately, what we are facing is not so simple. Our problems are not just in Washington D.C. or on Wall Street. The truth is that our biggest problem is what is going on inside of us.

America is rotting and decaying on the inside, and the next great economic crisis is going to reveal just how bad things have gotten.

Or could it be possible that I am overstating things?

Shocking New Research Reveals Obama"s Legacy Could Be an America of Aristocrats and Peons

Warning: This story is going to make you very angry.

New research from inequality experts Thomas Piketty and Emmanuel Saez has revealed that we now have the biggest gap between the rich and rest of America since economists began tracking data a century ago.

This isn’t supposed to happen following an economic crisis. After the Great Depression, Roosevelt’s New Deal programs worked to prevent wealth from piling back up at the top. And over the past two decades, the percentage of income claimed by the wealthy dropped after each recession. But in the aftermath of the Great Recession, the top 1 percent has gobbled up nearly all of the income gains in the first three years of the “recovery” — a stupifying 95 percent. Economic inequality is even worse than it was before the crash. In fact, last year the rich took home the largest share of income since 1917 with the exception of only one year: 1928.

Is This an Accident?

Let’s take a look at the years from 2009 -2012. While working people were sweating it, the richest Americans have enjoyed a fabulous ride. For example, if you were in the top 1 percent in 2012, lucky you — your income soared on average by 20 percent. And if you were in the top 0.01 percent, you probably bought a bigger yacht because your income was up by more than 32 percent on average. As for everybody else? They shared a measly 1 percent rise.

In other words, the rich are getting richer, and the rest of us are frozen in economic purgatory.

For despite all the talk of the Federal Reserve’s “quantitative easing” driving soaring stock markets and a post-crisis economic boom, 99 percenters have seen their real incomes going down and their living standards depressed. Ordinary, hard-working people are not getting a slice of the pie, they’re barely getting a sliver. (Cue Obama’s apparent pick for the next Federal Reserve chair, the crony capitalist, bank-loving Larry Summers.)

The bailouts, which handed boatloads of money to bankers, can’t be blamed entirely on President Obama. But ever since then, the policies of his administration have pretty much fixed things so that those who caused the crisis have benefited, while those who didn’t paid for it. He has surrounded himself with Wall Street apologists as economic advisors, despite the existence of extraordinary economic minds like Nobel laureate Joseph Stiglitz who could offer sound and sensible guidance. Every chance Obama has to correct this mistake, he seems to double down and brings on another 1 percenter.

To be fair, Republicans have been the most ardent promoters of “trickle-down” economics and austerity policies that leave regular people behind. But centrist Democrats have done little to forge a different path. A few courageous progressive voices, like Elizabeth Warren’s, get drowned out by a chorus of “Let’s Make a Deal” politicians eager to screw the bulk of the population and reward the rich while filling their campaign coffers. Policies like cutting our social insurance programs and allowing the rich to evade taxes are hidden behind clever marketing campaigns: For hedge fund billionaire Pete Peterson, for example, who counts deficit committee co-chairs Alan Simpson and Erskine Bowles as his errand boys, the name of the game is “fixing the debt.”

What these plutocrats are really doing is fixing your financial future so that more money can be sucked out of your pockets to line theirs. Obama’s decision to focus on deficit reduction rather than job creation is the sure sign his administration sings the tune of the wealthy. The wealthy wanted deficit reduction, while the rest of us wanted investment in jobs, schools and infrastructure, as Northwestern University’s Benjamin Page and his team of social scientists have shown in their extensive research on public opinon. But we didn’t get it. Instead we got job insecurity and nightmare retirement prospects.

Making the Rich Richer is a Terrible Idea.

Making the rich richer is a terrible idea for several reasons. For one thing, it kills jobs. When regular people have money in their pockets to pay for things like food, clothing, or going to the movies, they are actually creating jobs. The taco stand can hire another cashier when people come in to spend their money on tacos.

But there are only so many tacos you can buy. If you have much more money than you can possibly spend, you’ll likely sock it away or invest in financial assets or start doing risky speculation, which doesn’t create any jobs. With banks deleveraging (cutting back on loans) and many companies fearful of borrowing given anemic rates of economic growth, your savings won’t be recycled. Even if you’re a rich person who builds a company, chances are you’re not creating very good jobs, and you’re also destroying plenty of them. High unemployment makes it easy to hold wages down and squeeze more and more work from desperate workers. Apple executives like to brag about all the American jobs they create, but a great many of them are crappy retail jobs featuring $ 26,000 salaries and little chance of a long-term career.

An economist might say that the economic return to capitalists has gone up at the expense of economic return to labor.

As Nick Hanauer, founder of Second Avenue Partners, told Bloomberg:

“I can say with confidence that rich people don’t create jobs, nor do businesses, large or small. What does lead to more employment is the feedback loop between customers and businesses. And only consumers can set in motion a virtuous cycle that allows companies to survive and thrive and business owners to hire. An ordinary middle-class consumer is far more of a job creator than I ever have been or ever will be.”

You can see the truth of Hanauer’s statement when you realize that while the concentration of wealth in America has been heating up for the last couple of decades, the job market has been pretty bleak. That’s what happens when Washington policy becomes “Who Wants to Help a Millionaire?”

If making the rich richer is destructive, why do we do it? We’re not supposed to be a country of aristocrats and peasants who labor at the pleasure of the wealthy. We’re supposed to be free and proud citizens whose labor, investment and idea drive the economy.

What’s happened is that the rich have been using the fairy tale of “rugged individualism” and our healthy skepticism of too much government to convince many of us that we shouldn’t have programs designed to promote economic equality and benefit ordinary people rather than the rich. And, of course, they’ve unleashed their bankrolls in Washington, where, since Newt Gingrich came on the scene, Congress has turned into what political economist Thomas Ferguson describes in the Financial Times as a “Best Buy system” where positions of power go to whoever can raise the most cash. “Uniquely among legislatures in the developed world, US congressional parties now post prices for key slots in the lawmaking process,” writes Ferguson. “The practice makes cash flow the basic determinant of the very structure of lawmaking.”

The rich are getting richer in that they control our legal and political systems. They aren’t going to give up this control voluntarily.

If we continue on this path of functional feudalism, we can look to history for hints as to what might happen. In the late 18th century, peasants in France expressed their anger at the brutes who were extracting their wealth by rounding them up in the Place de la Concorde and separating their heads from their bodies. Hopefully we can go a more peaceful route, joining forces in a mass movement that pushes our elected officials to get our economy and society back into balance through fair taxes, a robust social safety net, investment in working people, rules of the road that curb Wall Street’s excesses, and a plan to bring the financial sector back to a manageable size.

The Occupy movement was a hint that this might be possible. It was also a warning that the Powers That Be will do everything they can to shut such a movement down.

But if we maintain the current path, at some point, the 99 percent will be pushed too far.

33 Shocking Facts Which Show How Badly The Economy Has Tanked Since Obama Became President

by Michael Snyder

Obama Follow Me

Barack Obama has been running around the country taking credit for an “economic recovery”, but the truth is that thingshave not gotten better under Obama.  Compared to when he first took office, a smaller percentage of the working age population is employed, the quality of our jobs has declined substantially and the middle class has been absolutely shredded.  If we are really in the middle of an “economic recovery”, why is the homeownership rate the lowest that it has been in 18 years?  Why has the number of Americans on food stamps increased by nearly 50 percent while Obama has been in the White House?  Why has the national debt gotten more than 6 trillion dollars larger during the Obama era?  Obama should not be “taking credit” for anything when it comes to the economy.  In fact, he should be deeply apologizing to the American people.

And of course Obama is being delusional if he thinks that he is actually “running the economy”.  The Federal Reserve has far more power over the U.S. economy and the U.S. financial system than he does.  But the mainstream media loves to fixate on the presidency, so presidents always get far too much credit or far too much blame for economic conditions.

But if you do want to focus on “the change” that has taken place since Barack Obama entered the White House, there is no way in the world that you can claim that things have actually gotten better during that time frame.  The cold, hard reality of the matter is that the U.S. economy has been steadily declining for over a decade, and this decline has continued while Obama has been living at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue.

It is getting very tiring listening to Obama supporters try to claim that Obama has improved the economy.  That is a false claim that is not even remotely close to reality.  The following are 33 shocking facts which show how badly the U.S. economy has tanked since Obama became president…

#1 When Barack Obama entered the White House, 60.6 percent of working age Americans had a job.  Today, only 58.7 percent of working age Americans have a job.

#2 Since Obama has been president, seven out of every eight jobsthat have been “created” in the U.S. economy have been part-time jobs.

#3 The number of full-time workers in the United States is still nearly 6 million below the old record that was set back in 2007.

#4 It is hard to believe, but an astounding 53 percent of all American workers now make less than $ 30,000 a year.

#5 40 percent of all workers in the United States actually make less than what a full-time minimum wage worker made back in 1968.

#6 When the Obama era began, the average duration of unemployment in this country was 19.8 weeks.  Today, it is 36.6 weeks.

#7 During the first four years of Obama, the number of Americans “not in the labor force” soared by an astounding 8,332,000.  That far exceeds any previous four year total.

#8 According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the middle class is taking home a smaller share of the overall income pie than has ever been recorded before.

#9 When Obama was elected, the homeownership rate in the United States was 67.5 percent.  Today, it is 65.0 percent.  That is the lowest that it has been in 18 years.

#10 When Obama entered the White House, the mortgage delinquency rate was 7.85 percent.  Today, it is 9.72 percent.

#11 In 2008, the U.S. trade deficit with China was 268 billion dollars.  Last year, it was 315 billion dollars.

#12 When Obama first became president, 12.5 million Americans had manufacturing jobs.  Today, only 11.9 million Americans have manufacturing jobs.

#13 Median household income in America has fallen for four consecutive years.  Overall, it has declined by over $ 4000 during that time span.

#14 The poverty rate has shot up to 16.1 percent.  That is actually higher than when the War on Poverty began in 1965.

#15 During Obama’s first term, the number of Americans on food stamps increased by an average of about 11,000 per day.

#16 When Barack Obama entered the White House, there were about 32 million Americans on food stamps.  Today, there are more than 47 million Americans on food stamps.

#17 At this point, more than a million public school students in the United States are homeless.  This is the first time that has ever happened in our history.  That number has risen by 57 percent since the 2006-2007 school year.

#18 When Barack Obama took office, the average price of a gallon of regular gasoline was $ 1.85.  Today, it is $ 3.53.

#19 Electricity bills in the United States have risen faster than the overall rate of inflation for five years in a row.

#20 Health insurance costs have risen by 29 percent since Barack Obama became president, and Obamacare is going to make things far worse.

#21 The United States has fallen in the global economic competitiveness rankings compiled by the World Economic Forum for four years in a row.

#22 According to economist Tim Kane, the following is how the number of startup jobs per 1000 Americans breaks down by presidential administration

Bush Sr.: 11.3

Clinton: 11.2

Bush Jr.: 10.8

Obama: 7.8

#23 In 2008, that total amount of student loan debt in this country was 440 billion dollars.  At this point, it has shot up to about a trillion dollars.

#24 According to one recent survey, 76 percent of all Americans are living paycheck to paycheck.

#25 During Obama’s first term, the number of Americans collecting federal disability insurance rose by more than 18 percent.

#26 The total amount of money that the federal government gives directly to the American people has grown by 32 percent since Barack Obama became president.

#27 According to the Survey of Income and Program Participation conducted by the U.S. Census, well over 100 million Americans are enrolled in at least one welfare program run by the federal government.

#28 As I wrote about the other day, American households are now receiving more money directly from the federal government than they are paying to the government in taxes.

#29 Under Barack Obama, the velocity of money (a very important indicator of economic health) has plunged to a post-World War II low.

#30 At the end of 2008, the Federal Reserve held $ 475.9 billion worth of U.S. Treasury bonds.  Today, Fed holdings of U.S. Treasury bonds have skyrocketed past the 2 trillion dollar mark.

#31 When Barack Obama was first elected, the U.S. debt to GDP ratio was under 70 percent.  Today, it is up to 101 percent.

#32 During Obama’s first term, the federal government accumulated more new debt than it did under the first 42 U.S presidents combined.

#33 When you break it down, the amount of new debt accumulated by the U.S. government during Obama’s first term comes to approximately$ 50,521 for every single household in the United States.  Are you able to pay your share?
