For Leftists, the Personal is Still the Political

For Leftists, the Personal is Still the Political

Here are a few brief thoughts on the controversy surrounding MSNBC’s Twitter feed, in which — in response to a Cheerios ad (!) – the following message was sent out: “Maybe the right wing will hate it, but everyone else will go awww: the adorable new#Cheerios ad w/ biracial family.”

1. This kind of racial slander is the coin of the realm for MSNBC. Its president, Phil Griffin, apologized for the tweet and fired the staffer responsible for it. Fine and good. But it’s not clear why he acted on this occasion and not the hundreds of outrageous libels against Republicans and conservatives that have happened prior to it.

2. This incident demonstrates how for some on the left virtually everything is reduced to politics — even a cereal ad. It reveals an obsession with politics that is distorted and unhealthy. And it’s something that frankly one doesn’t find as prevalent among conservatives, at least in my experience. The slogan popularized during the social revolution of the late 1960s and early 1970s, “the personal is the political,” helps explain this progressive cast of mind. For the left, politics is the primary means toward social progress and fulfillment, whereas for the right, our private lives are considered far more separate and distinct. Conservatives, I think, tend to view politics as important but not as all consuming, which is a far better way to understand life and reality.

3. There’s a cautionary tale in all of this, which is that the right shouldn’t become like the left. Leave the hateful attacks, the venom, and the name-calling to them. Conservatives don’t need it, we shouldn’t want it, and it’s not consistent with our best tradition. If the left wants to give refuge to the haters, then that’s up to them. The right, on the other hand, should be characterized by people who are principled, passionate, decent and who don’t (as Ronald Reagan used to remind his staff) consider our opponents to be our enemies. Some conservatives seem to make a rather good living on doing the opposite, on engaging in ad hominem and often childish attacks, and it’s discrediting to them and to the movement they claim to represent.

Latest Version of Newsweek Channels Leftists Comparing Pope Francis to Che Guevara

Tim Graham

The latest version of Newsweek sounds like it’s going to be even more liberal than the The Daily Beast version. The group hoping to re-launch the print edition has an article on their website called “Is Pope Francis a Socialist?”

Their answer is no, but they’re so impressed with the new pope that they’re channeling the idea that somehow pope photos will replace Che Guevara as a revolutionary icon:

The left-leaning Guardian, which routinely heaped opprobrium on the Vatican for its mishandling of the pedophile priests scandal, hails Francis as the liberals’ new poster boy. Literally: Tomorrow’s undergraduates, predicts Jonathan Freedland, will adorn their rooms with posters of Francis instead of Che Guevara. And Time just named him their Person of the Year.

That’s odd — no, not Newsweek paying tribute to Time magazine. The Che reference is odd because the article’s author, Cristina Odone, doesn’t really believe Francis is a Marxist radical, or even a socialist:

For many conservative Americans, who believe socialism begins with street lighting, the question of whether the pope is a socialist is not moot. Before they join in the songs of praise for the pope they need to know which side the pope is on.

Of course, the notion that Pope Francis is a true socialist is absurd. Socialists believe in the state taking control of the commanding heights of the economy. They believe the free market should be substituted by a command economy in which goods are produced according to need and prices are fixed to ensure fairness.

Nothing Pope Francis has said or done would suggest for a moment that he is a dangerous radical or even that he secretly harbors socialist thoughts.

Then there’s a passage that really suggests there’s a violent dictatorship running Vatican City:

Because they operate behind the scenes, Vatican bureaucrats can all too easily get away with secrecy – and crimes. Scandals involving clerics’ visits to gay brothels and money laundering by the Vatican Bank have sealed the curia’s reputation as Da Vinci Code baddies.

“They have a lot at stake in things continuing as they are,” claims one Vatican watcher, referring to conspiracy theories surrounding the death of Pope John Paul I in 1978 after only 33 days. “They will see off anyone, even a pope, if they suspect opposition.”

If Pope Francis gets bumped off by wicked cardinals, you heard it first in the new Newsweek.

Leftists Who Cheered Abortion Filibuster Slam Ted Cruz

Killing babies “heroic,” opposing Obamacare offensive

While cheering a 10 hour speech by Democratic state Senator Wendy Davis that succeeded in blocking a Texas bill that would have banned abortions after 20 weeks of pregnancy as “the filibuster heard around the world,” leftists have displayed little else but contempt towards Ted Cruz’s marathon stand against Obamacare.

The Huffington Post characterized Cruz’s quasi-filibuster against Obamacare, a sentiment shared by most Americans, as a “hijack” of the Senate, a somewhat different tone to how they reported Davis’ opposition to a policy that was not shared by the majority of Texans.

Democratic Congressman Mark Takano also tweeted his view that Davis’ success in ensuring babies were killed after the 5th month was “the greatest filibuster of all time!”

The Daily Kos’ Markos Moulitsas scorned Cruz while labeling Wendy Davis’ tirade a “heroic effort”.

Other Twitter users drew attention to the left’s hypocritical disdain for (quasi) filibusters.

However, it’s not just leftists who attacked Cruz. Some faux conservatives fell in line with RINO Republicans to lambaste the Texas Senator, including the Daily Caller’s Jamie Weinstein, who penned a sophomoric piece which served to communicate the message that his attempt to sink Obamacare was doomed to failure.
