Conservatives slam Benghazi report

Louie Gohmert says too many questions remain to produce a comprehensie report.

Conservative critics on Wednesday slammed the bipartisan Senate Intelligence Committee’s Benghazi report, which called the attacks on the U.S. consulate there preventable.

“There is never a shortage of bipartisanship when we don’t have all the facts,” Rep. Louie Gohmert (R-Texas) charged of the report.

Gohmert — one of the most critical voices in wake of the September 2012 attacks on the U.S. consulate that killed four Americans, including U.S. Ambassador Chris Stevens — said there are too many unanswered questions for the committee to have produced a comprehensive report.

“Once we get all of that information, once this administration stops keeping the roadblock up to the truth, then you’ll see a bipartisan report that gives you real facts and not opinions,” he said.

The report concluded that the attacks could have been prevented if more attention was paid to intelligence warnings. But it disputed allegations that military assets that could have saved lives were not mobilized and that talking points used after the attacks were changed for political reasons.

Gohmert pointed to an allegation that has failed to get much traction beyond conservative circles: that the CIA was secretly gathering guns that had been given to fighters in Libya in order to distribute them to rebels in Syria.

“The unanswered questions of was this administration trying to rescue weapons in Libya that this administration had provided to rebels and were there American assets in Libya who were reviewing sites to store such weapons to be sent to Syria?” Gohmert said. “Until those questions are answered, we will not have a definitive report.”

Rep. Michele Bachmann (R-Minn.) called attention to the report’s findings that the intelligence community was aware of the threat beforehand but did little to improve security at the site.

“The administration looks very flatfooted and certainly inept and incompetent when it came to Benghazi,” Bachmann said.

She criticized former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, who has been a conservative target in the charge that the administration covered up key facts about the controversy.

“Why did Clinton fail in her job as the head of the State Department to safely protect the people in Benghazi when they knew it was a problem?” Bachmann said. “Today more than ever Benghazi stands as the symbol of incompetency of the Obama administration. It’s a high hurdle Clinton has to overcome in the future.”

Rep. Thomas Massie (R-Ky.) disputed the report’s finding that military assets weren’t available and in close enough proximity to save lives during the attack.

“That flies in the face of what we uncovered in the [House] Oversight Committee,” Massie said.

Massie said while the military assets would not have arrived in time, teams based in Washington D.C. were told to stand down before the attack was over and it was known they couldn’t arrive in time.

“I hope the report takes into account all the facts we’ve uncovered in the Oversight Committee,” Massie said.

Rep. Steve King (R-Iowa) also disputed the report’s findings that the controversial talking points then-U.N. Ambassador Susan Rice used on Sunday morning news programs were the product of incomplete intelligence reports.

King said the administration knew the attack wasn’t the product of a protest in response to an anti-Islam video.

King said the administration briefed Congress in a classified setting days after the attack, and while he didn’t disclose what was said in the briefing, “They told us the same lies that they told America on Sunday TV.”

Leftists Who Cheered Abortion Filibuster Slam Ted Cruz

Killing babies “heroic,” opposing Obamacare offensive

While cheering a 10 hour speech by Democratic state Senator Wendy Davis that succeeded in blocking a Texas bill that would have banned abortions after 20 weeks of pregnancy as “the filibuster heard around the world,” leftists have displayed little else but contempt towards Ted Cruz’s marathon stand against Obamacare.

The Huffington Post characterized Cruz’s quasi-filibuster against Obamacare, a sentiment shared by most Americans, as a “hijack” of the Senate, a somewhat different tone to how they reported Davis’ opposition to a policy that was not shared by the majority of Texans.

Democratic Congressman Mark Takano also tweeted his view that Davis’ success in ensuring babies were killed after the 5th month was “the greatest filibuster of all time!”

The Daily Kos’ Markos Moulitsas scorned Cruz while labeling Wendy Davis’ tirade a “heroic effort”.

Other Twitter users drew attention to the left’s hypocritical disdain for (quasi) filibusters.

However, it’s not just leftists who attacked Cruz. Some faux conservatives fell in line with RINO Republicans to lambaste the Texas Senator, including the Daily Caller’s Jamie Weinstein, who penned a sophomoric piece which served to communicate the message that his attempt to sink Obamacare was doomed to failure.

Nadal Wins US Open, 13th Grand Slam

No. 2-ranked Rafael Nadal won his 13th Grand Slam title by edging No. 1 Novak Djokovic 6-2, 3-6, 6-4, 6-1 in a riveting U.S. Open final filled with lengthy points and fantastic shotmaking.

Nadal’s victory Monday gave him a second championship at Flushing Meadows, and came a year after he missed the tournament with a knee injury.

This was their 37th head-to-head match, the most between two men in the Open era, and their third U.S. Open final in four years. Nadal beat Djokovic for the 2010 title, and Djokovic won their rematch in 2011.

Nadal improved to 60-3 with nine titles this season. His total of 13 major trophies ranks third in the history of men’s tennis, behind only Roger Federer’s 17 and Pete Sampras’ 14.

Alisa Kleybanova Marks Grand Slam Return After Cancer Treatment At U.S. Open

NEW YORK (AP) — Alisa Kleybanova could be forgiven for simply being happy to be here, as the old sports cliche goes.

Happy to be rid of cancer. Happy to be playing tennis. Happy to be participating in a major tournament, something she last did 2½ years ago.

When she sets foot on Court 7 against Monica Puig at the U.S. Open on Monday, Kleybanova will be competing in a Grand Slam match for the first time since the Australian Open in January 2011. Soon after, Kleybanova was forced off the tour while receiving treatment for Hodgkin’s lymphoma, a form of blood cancer.

“It’s nice to be back on the court, obviously, but for me, I don’t just want to play tennis,” the Russian in an interview Sunday. “I want to win.”

Kleybanova, now 24, turned pro shortly after turning 14 and made quick strides, reaching No. 20 in the WTA rankings, winning two titles, earning more than $ 2 million and advancing to the fourth round at two Grand Slams in singles, as well as the semifinals of the 2009 U.S. Open in doubles.

And then her life changed considerably. After being diagnosed in the spring of 2011, Kleybanova announced via the WTA’s website on July 15 that year — her 22nd birthday — that she was sick and would be treated in Italy, where she trained. She underwent chemotherapy until December 2011.

“I finished my treatments a long time ago. But it takes time for the body to settle down. It’s not just living a normal life out here; it’s really pushing yourself to the limits,” said Kleybanova, who is now based part of the year at Boynton Beach, Fla. “It’s really, really hard, even for someone who never had these kinds of issues. For a normal person, it’s tough to be at this level. So for me, now, it’s even tougher. But I’m ready for it. I’m not expecting it to be easy.”

Her ranking is now 363rd, built on a 15-4 record, mostly at lower-tier tournaments. Because of the WTA’s protected ranking rule, Kleybanova was allowed to petition for entry into the main draw at one Grand Slam tournament, which is why she will be facing Puig, a 19-year-old from Puerto Rico who is ranked 44th.

“If I’m not playing tennis on a high level, I’m not going to keep playing. Now the challenge for me is to get back to the top,” said Kleybanova, who is entered in doubles at the U.S. Open with Christina McHale of the United States. “It’s not going to happen quick. It’s going to take some time.”

Other players are pleased to see her back on tour, finding her story “inspiring,” as Wimbledon champion Marion Bartoli put it.

“To see her go through all this and still come back — as a tennis player, it takes a tremendous amount of desire,” Bartoli said. “I have so much respect for everything she’s been doing and dealing with. I can’t even imagine how hard it would’ve been for her.”

Andrea Petkovic, a former top-10 player beset by injuries, said that seeing Kleybanova overcome cancer put her own issues in a new light.

“What happened to her is 100 million times worse than what happened to me. Everyone was coming to me and saying, ‘Oh, poor you!’ — and then you just see everything in perspective again,” Petkovic said. “I always knew her as a very, very nice girl and very open and happy about life and just very positive. And then I didn’t see her for two years. When I saw her (back on tour), I told her, ‘So happy to see you back.’ And she told me, ‘I’m so happy to see you back.’ I hope I’m going to see her back where she was.”

So does Kleybanova, who says her career aim is once again what it had been before getting sick: She wants to climb all the way up to the top 10.

She knows that won’t be easy. But she is determined.

“For now, my goal is to at least be in the top 100, try to get there as fast as possible,” Kleybanova said with a smile, “and then see what happens.”

Lawmakers Slam Country For Abetting Snowden Flight

By Paul Eckert and Thomas Ferraro
WASHINGTON, June 23 (Reuters) – U.S. lawmakers on Sunday said former national security contractor Edward Snowden’s reported flight to Russia with a plan to flee onward to Cuba or Venezuela undermined his whistle blower claims and they slammed Moscow for helping a fugitive.
An aircraft thought to be carrying Snowden landed in Moscow on Sunday after Hong Kong let the former U.S. National Security Agency contractor leave the territory, despite Washington’s efforts to extradite him to face espionage charges.
According to a source at Russia’s Aeroflot airline, Snowden was traveling to Moscow and was planning to go to Venezuela via Cuba.
Democratic U.S. Senator Charles Schumer charged that Russian President Vladimir Putin likely knew and approved of Snowden’s flight from Hong Kong to Russia. He said that will “have serious consequences” for a U.S.-Russian relationship already strained over Syria and human rights.
“Putin always seems almost eager to stick a finger in the eye of the United States – whether it is Syria, Iran and now of course with Snowden,” Schumer told CNN’s “State of the Union,” adding that China may have had a role as well.
“It remains to be seen how much influence Beijing had on Hong Kong,” Schumer said. “As you know, they coordinate their foreign policies and I have a feeling that the hand of Beijing was involved here.”
House Intelligence Committee Chairman Mike Rogers said Snowden’s reported choice to fly later to Cuba and Venezuela undermines his claim to be a fighter for freedom of information.
“Everyone of those nations is hostile to the United States. I mean, if he could go to North Korea and Iran, he could round out his government oppression tour,” the Michigan Republican said on Sunday on NBC’s “Meet the Press” program.
Rogers urged the Obama administration to exhaust all legal options to get Snowden back to the United States. “If he really believes he did something good, he should get on a plane, come back and face the consequences of his actions,” he said.
Senator Dianne Feinstein, chair of the Senate Intelligence Committee, said Snowden needed to be caught and brought back for trial as secrets he was carrying could do a lot of damage to U.S. interests.
“I think we need to know exactly what he has,” she told CBS’s “Face the Nation.” “He could have a lot, lot more that may really put people in jeopardy.”
Schumer aimed most of his fire at Putin, saying “it is almost certain he know, and likely approved” the flight by Snowden, who had been hiding in Hong Kong since leaking details about U.S. surveillance activities to news media.
“What is infuriating here is,” Schumer said, was Putin “aiding and abetting Snowden’s escape.” The New York lawmaker is the No. 3 Senate Democrat.
The United States has been told by Hong Kong that Snowden has left Hong Kong for “a third country” and Washington will seek cooperation with countries Snowden may try to go to, a Justice Department official said on Sunday.
“We will continue to discuss this matter with Hong Kong and pursue relevant law enforcement cooperation with other countries where Mr. Snowden may be attempting to travel,” Justice Department spokeswoman Nanda Chitre said in a statement.
The United States contacted Hong Kong on Saturday seeking Snowden’s extradition, Chitre said.
But a second Justice Department official told Reuters “They came back to us late Friday with additional questions and we were in the process of responding.”
The U.S. request to Hong Kong authorities “met the requirements of the agreement,” the official said.
While many blasted Snowden, Republican Senator Rand Paul of Kentucky, a member of the Homeland Security and Government Affairs Committee and one of the chamber’s most conservative members, said, “it’s going to be an open question how this young man is judged.”
“If he goes to an independent third country like Iceland and if he refuses to talk to any sort of formal government about this, I think there’s a chance that he’ll be seen as an advocate of privacy.”
“If he cozies up to either the Russian government, the Chinese government, or any of these governments that are perceived still as enemies of ours, I think that that will be a real problem for him in history.” Paul said in a separate appearance on CNN’s “State of the Union.” (Additional reporting by Mark Felsenthal and David Brunnstrom; editing by Jackie Frank)
