N.H. City Wants a “Tank” to Use Against Occupiers and Libertarians

After the public release of a document in which he suggested that Occupiers and libertarians pose a domestic terror threat to Concord, New Hampshire, the city’s police chief has backed away from the claim.

In an application to the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) seeking more than $ 250,000 to purchase an armored police vehicle, the capital city of New Hampshire specified the local branch of the Occupy movement and the Free State Project, an effort to recruit “liberty-loving people” to relocate to the Granite State, as potential sources of terrorist action.

“The State of New Hampshire’s experience with terrorism slants primarily towards the domestic type,” the filing reads. “We are fortunate that our State has not been victimized from a mass casualty event from an international terrorism strike however on the domestic front, the threat is real and here. Groups such as the Sovereign Citizens, Free Staters and Occupy New Hampshire are active and present daily challenges.”

The application was obtained by the New Hampshire Civil Liberties Union (NHCLU) through a public records request, and is one ofmore than 250 filed by the American Civil Liberties Union to trackwhat it sees as the increasing militarization of police departments throughout the country.

While the sovereign citizens movement has a history of racism and violence, Police Chief John Duval now says that he doesn’t actually believe the Free State Project or Occupy New Hampshire are domestic terror threats. “I wish I would have worded things different in retrospect,” he says. “I understand why their eyebrows are raised about that.” He chalks up the wording to the limitations of writing a detailed proposal in only three pages and says it was meant to refer to the “unpredictable nature of unpredictable people who attach themselves to otherwise lawful situations.

Duval has no plans to issue a formal apology, but he has exchanged emails with Carla Gericke, president of the Free State Project, to explain his position, which he has also attempted to clarify with local reporters.

The city’s application says the vehicle, a Lenco BearCat G3, could be used to respond to acts of terrorism involving “chemical, biological, and radiological materials as well as explosive gases” and smaller-scale crises such as “suicidal and hostage situations.” Duval says his department needs the vehicle to replace a 1981 Air Force Peacekeeper that’s fallen into disrepair. Concord’s population is just over 40,000, but as a capital city in the state that hosts the first-in-the-nation presidential primaries, Duval doesn’t want to rule out the possibility of an attack like the Boston Marathon bombing.

That explanation is unlikely to satisfy Gericke, who accuses the city of “acting in secrecy and making false allegations behind our backs.”

Her organization has referred to the vehicle, which is built atop a Ford F-550 frame and has armor that can sustain .50-caliber rifle fire, as a “tank.” She says the the Free State Project has received “overwhelmingly” positive feedback about its concerns. “I think that law enforcement doesn’t necessarily understand where we’re coming from,” she says. “I think they think we’re anti-police, but really what we are is pro-freedom and pro-accountability.” (Gericke does note that she is suing the Weare, New Hampshire, police department for arresting her in 2011 on a wiretapping charge, later dropped, for allegedly recording a police traffic stop.) On Monday, the Free State Project demanded an apology from city officials.

This Friday, Occupy New Hampshire plans to hold its first general assembly in more than a yearto discuss the application. Occupy demonstrations across the country have been met with police using armored vehicles. A May 2012 protest in Oakland, California, for example, drew outa $ 323,000 vehicle purchased by county officials from the private military company formerly known as Blackwater.

Duval rejects the idea that police departments have become overly militarized. The BearCat G3, he says, is an unarmed “box of armor on wheels,” not a tank. “Do I fear a .50-caliber offensive attack on my office?” he asks. “I do not. But boy, that makes me feel real comfortable when there are high-powered rifles out there.” Instead, he believes that criticism should be directed at individual departments that may have overstepped their authority: “All of these things, like the BearCat or like any other piece of equipment, are tools, and they all have their appropriate use.”

“The Free State movement and Occupy New Hampshire have no history of violence, so it’s very unclear why any police department would need to use an armored vehicle when addressing these groups,” says Devon Chaffee, executive director of the NHCLU. “But we all agree that we want the police and we want our communities to be safe, and what this conversation is about is really what type of equipment and tactics are most appropriate to achieve that goal. I think this application has sparked a very important conversation.”

While DHS has approved Concord’s request, the city council, which unanimously approved the application last September, plans to meet next Monday to first address lingering concerns.

Civil libertarians eye Al Qaeda return

Al Qaeda’s back, and its timing couldn’t be worse for the Republicans who are taking on the national security wing of their party.

Edward Snowden reignited a debate over privacy and civil liberties that had fizzled in recent years. Just last week, civil libertarians were even picking up momentum on proposals to restrict the NSA’s mass collection of Americans’ phone records thanks to renewed attention in the media.

But that was before the serious new Al Qaeda threats that have forced the shuttering of 19 American embassies and consulates overseas.

Now, the libertarian Republicans who are trying to rein in the NSA — steering their party away from the security-first mind-set that dominated for most of the post-Sept. 11 years — will have to shout above the GOP establishment’s warnings that the new dangers from Al Qaeda prove why the surveillance is necessary.

The leaders of the GOP’s civil liberties wing say they’re not worried. They insist they can press their case, even with the alarming reports about plans for an Al Qaeda attack — complete with stories of exploding clothes — because this is exactly the time when they say the public needs to be reminded not to undermine the privacy rights of law-abiding Americans.

(PHOTOS: How serious is the terror threat?)

“I think it strengthens our momentum,” said Rep. Justin Amash (R-Mich.), who forced a close House vote on NSA restrictions and plans to revive the legislative push this fall. “The point of the Fourth Amendment is to protect the rights of individuals when the government would use national security concerns to violate those rights.”

Rep. Morgan Griffith (R-Va.), one of Amash’s allies, says they can still make the case for privacy: “I think most Americans understand there is a difference between listening to the activities of known enemies and using our surveillance to collect my mother’s phone records and store them in a warehouse in Utah.”

But it’s going to be a tougher task than it was even a week ago. Civil liberties-minded lawmakers never could get much of a hearing for most of the years after Sept. 11, and it was only in the past few weeks that the momentum started to change. Amash had forced a House vote on restrictions for the NSA’s phone surveillance program — which he almost won — and President Barack Obama met last week with leading Senate and House intelligence experts, including critics of the NSA program.

Now, the focus has once again shifted to stopping the next attack. For Republicans who were worried that their party would lose its edge on national security, the new dangers from Al Qaeda offer a chance to get the public on their side — by arguing that the full range of surveillance programs is needed to detect these kinds of plots.

“I think it’s going to calm down some of the stridency,” said Rep. Peter King (R-N.Y.), who’s exploring a White House run to stress the importance of national security. The latest Al Qaeda threat won’t end the debate over the proper boundaries of surveillance, King said, but “what it is going to do is show the public how critical the NSA surveillance is.”

“Right now, the enemies of the NSA have managed to demonize them into some kind of evil agency,” King said. “To me, this demonstrates how good they are, how professional they are, how essential they are.”

The Al Qaeda threat hasn’t quite reopened the feud between Gov. Chris Christie and Sen. Rand Paul, the two potential 2016 White House candidates who bickered over Paul’s skepticism of government surveillance. Christie’s aides passed up a chance to comment for this article, and Paul has remained silent as well.

But other Republican national security hawks say the Al Qaeda plot makes their point about the value of surveillance. Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) warned on CNN that any lawmaker who wants to “gut” the NSA surveillance program “make[s] us much less safe, and you’re putting our nation at risk.”

And they’ve got lots of backup from veterans of the George W. Bush administration, who insist that the growing signs of terrorist activity overseas — which also include the Benghazi attacks and the jailbreaks in Iraq by Al Qaeda fighters — prove that intelligence officials need the full range of surveillance tools to sweep up as much information as possible.

“It’s rare to find a single, smoking-gun piece of intelligence, and you’re sifting through all of the information under extreme time pressure, not a leisurely pace over the course of months,” said Michael Chertoff, who ran the Department of Homeland Security in Bush’s second term.

It’s not just the civil liberties Republicans who will have to keep the public from getting scared away from a privacy debate. Top Democratic lawmakers, including Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Patrick Leahy of Vermont and Sens. Ron Wyden of Oregon and Mark Udall of Colorado, have been working on their own bills to limit the targets of NSA surveillance. All will have to make sure they don’t lose the momentum they gained.

There’s also a new bill by Sen. Richard Blumenthal (D-Conn.) to restructure the court that approves the surveillance requests, and several lawmakers have introduced measures to disclose more information about the government’s monitoring requests.

Libertarians Bite the Gold Dust

August 3, 2013

ronpaulbug.jpg(Left, Ron Paul advocates gold-backed currency. )

Libertarian stock has dropped
with the price of gold resulting
in a vacuum at the heart of
the “Truth Movement.” New
monetary programs can fill the gap.

by Anthony Migchels
(henrymakow.com)

mises.pngIt’s hard to think of a more pathetic example of auto-combustion as the visitor decline at Libertarian websites run by Gary North, Lew Rockwell and Mises.org (chart left).

Few still believe that Gold will stop the bankers. Gold is deflationary, which would worsen an already grim scenario and does nothing to end usury. America itself is in the absolute worst of positions to go Gold because nobody has any, the Federal Reserve least of all.

Rand Paul recently suggested a Gold commission, but with his father gone, he is useless in the Truth Movement. The only person plugging him is Alex Jones, who was also instrumental in giving Ron ‘Arabs did 9/11′ Paul a platform. But just about everybody has been distancing themselves from Alex Jones. In the last few months, many people called him out for different reasons. Jones is regularly being torched by his own feed-backers.

aynrandpaul.jpgRand Paul (left) looks increasingly ridiculous. The other day, hard-core Zionist Rand Paul was calling for war in Syria. Claiming Obama only wanted to fight Assad to a stalemate our man stated: ‘I’ve told them I’m not sending my kids or your kids or any American soldiers to fight for stalemate. When we fight, we fight to win, we fight for American principles, we fight for the American flag and we come home after we win.’

WHAT DOES IT ALL MEAN?

Austrianism always has been the Money Power’s tool to subvert American Populism. Ed Griffin’s ‘the Creature of Jekyll Island’ is the perfect example of how they steamroll any platform for monetary reform by confusing the uninitiated. With the decline of Gold buggery, we see a vacuum right at the heart of the Truth Movement.

The international implications of this trend are hard to fathom.  Austrianism fits well with the rise of the Gold backed Yuan. The Euro also was designed to be backed by Gold. Ron Paul never intended to win the elections and Lew Rockwell, right after Paul’s legendary backstabbing, claimed he was only there to educate the masses on the wonders of Austrian Economics. So it’s not too clear if tPtB want a Gold Standard for America, or perhaps he was just too early.

The Truth Movement is the natural heir of the great American Populists who have fought for plentiful money since the Civil War. But what is the Truth Movement? The great thing is: nobody knows. It’s one big mess and everybody associated with it has his or her own particular perspective.

But there does seem to be a certain loose consensus. 9/11 Truth of course. The idea that the world is run by some bankers (Rothschild & Co), that they are trying to establish World Government and that they use wars to create the chaos they need to get there. It despises Zionism and Imperialism. It is more spiritual than religious.

Bankers have bought the entire world by offering bookkeeping services and slapping usury on those with debit accounts. This is called banking and it’s the mother of all hoaxes. It’s the kernel of the New World Order. They have brought all nations and governments to their knees and chained us to interest-slavery. Money is the only commodity that mankind can create in infinite amounts with the stroke of a pen.

If the results had not been so harmful for untold billions of people, it would have been funny.

MONETARY REFORM URGENTLY NEEDED

The answer is clear: we desperately need monetary reform. With the Gold meme in decline, more serious proposals are finding a platform. There is the American Monetary Institute run by Zarlenga. They managed to get Kucinich on board, who launched HR2990 in Congress. Shortly thereafter he lost his seat, but this was quite a feat nonetheless.

There are the Hamiltonians/Larouchians, for instance with their the United Front Against Austerity. Ellen Brown’s Public Banking is also heavily influenced by Hamiltonian thinking.

These proposals certainly are very American and would go a long way. They would end the depression and interest payments by the State.

But they do not solve interest-slavery for the common man. He would still have to go to a bank to pay $ 300k interest on a $ 200k mortgage. These proposals also tend to centralize power in Washington and personally I’d like to see more decentralization to the States, cities and towns.

There are also the interest-free crediters. Mathematically Perfected Economy is one example. Hour Money another. Thomas Greco (Reinventing Money.com)  is big on Mutual Credit clearing. These proposals all demonstrate a principled stance against Usury, which is absolutely key.

There are also the Europeans, people like Margrit Kennedy and Bernard Lietaer, who are strongly anti-usury, anti hoarding (of money) and promote regional/complementary currencies.

There are also the proposals that I would loosely categorize as ‘Chicago Plan’. The AMI is quite close to it. Bill Still has been offering solutions in that direction. Positive Money comes to mind. A weakness of these proposals is full-reserve banking.

And let’s not forget Social Credit, which remains a force.

CONCLUSION

With Austrianism facing decimation, a united Monetary Reform platform seems more possible than ever.

Sound money is

1. Interest-Free
2. Stable, no boom/bust cycle, which is a result of tampering with the volume of money
3. Decentralized in the sense that local communities and economies have access to cheap credit

The current proposals show great promise but the finishing touch is lacking. We need a wide scale debate. This will enhance both the proposals and the public interest and understanding.

Banking is One and those that own it are the Money Power. As Michael Hoffman put it: ‘If there is a greater evil than the Money Power, than the Bible is lying……To say that the Money Power is at the very top of the evils that we need to work against basically overwhelms people. They want something else to fight…….Freedom from interest on money, is essentially the battle for freedom from the Money Power……We reject the weaponization of the love of money as it is represented by interest on loans of money!!’

This is, and remains, the challenge for both the Truth Movement and the Human Race.
