Maher: What "I love about the Pauls"

Liberal comic Bill Maher praised Sen. Rand Paul following his straw poll victory at CPAC, saying the Kentucky Republican could give Hillary Clinton “a run for her money,” if both run in 2016.

Maher, during his HBO program “Real Time with Bill Maher” on Friday, said that while most of the Republican lawmakers at CPAC called for action in Crimea, Paul is “the one guy who says quite the opposite, like his father, he is for not for having an American empire. That’s the thing I love about the Pauls.”

Agreeing with Maher, blogger Andrew Sullivan commended the ability that Paul, who won over 30 percent of the CPAC straw poll vote last week, has in delivering his message.

(QUIZ: Do you know Rand Paul?)

“I think Rand Paul’s attempt to say what most people in this country really understand, which is we don’t need to run the world. We don’t want to run the world. America would be in a better place if we were less interested in our own power, and more interested in freedom,” Sullivan said.

“He could give Hillary a run for her money,” Maher added.

Author Salman Rushdie said if the two ran against each other, Paul could attract the “youth wing of the GOP” comparing it to the appeal President Barack Obama had during his 2008 campaign.

“If he can break into that, then he’s got a chance,” Rushdie said.

Sullivan echoed Rushdie, adding if Clinton were to run against Paul, “She’ll come off like a neocon, because in fact, she is a bit of a neocon.”

Author Amy Chua said Paul is “so independent-minded,” which attracts a lot of support.

“I think, Hillary Clinton, you feel like it’s just going to fit into certain familiar things,” Chua said. “And he’s just a little unpredictable, you know, he doesn’t care what people think and that’s appealing to a lot of people.”

Bill Maher Presses Maddow On Christie Coverage: "It"s Not Watergate" (VIDEO)

Bill Maher may have broken up with MSNBC, but he’s still paying close attention to just how much coverage the network gives to New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie (R).

Maher brought MSNBC host Rachel Maddow onto his HBO show Friday night and pressed her to explain why the network gives so much airtime to the scandal surrounding the Christie administration’s involvement in closing lanes on the George Washington Bridge.

“I am totally obsessed with the Christie story, unapologetically,” Maddow said, comparing it to her past coverage of disgraced former Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich.

Maher wrote in what he called a earlier this month that he was going to “start seeing other news organizations” in protest of the network’s wall-to-wall coverage of Christie. He added that MSNBC had become like Fox News and that the so-called Bridgegate scandal had become the network’s version of Benghazi.

“I should have said that, yes, this is not the same as Benghazi,” Maher said. “I made that analogy, I said ‘This is your Benghazi.’ Benghazi is nothing. There is no scandal there. This is an actual scandal. It’s just that it’s not Watergate.”

“When there are gonzo political corruption stories, you cover them,” Maddow responded. “The most interesting thing about the Christie one is that we still don’t know what happened. It’s still not resolved. We still don’t have an explanation.”

National Review writer Charles C.W. Cooke ventured another theory about why MSNBC has hammered Christie in recent weeks: to “get rid of Chris Christie” from the 2016 presidential field.

“So you think that I’ve created the bridge story out of whole cloth in order to elect a Democrat in 2016?” Maddow asked with a mocking laugh, concluding that the bridge scandal was simply “an ongoing story worth covering.”

Bill Maher hisses at cat cruelty

Just because the government shutdown is pressing on in Washington, doesn’t mean there aren’t other important issues out there to focus on — like cats.

That’s Bill Maher’s focus as the HBO “Real Time” host is partnering up with PETA to campaign against “cruel cat experiments.”

Maher has recorded a message that will be played, via phone to more than 100,000 individuals in Wisconsin in advance of his Oct. 13 performance in Madison. PETA has been attacking the University of Wisconsin–Madison for animal testing since last year.

“Many things in life are funny, but cruelty to animals isn’t one of them,” Maher says in the message. “I want to make sure that you know about the terrible things done to cats right here at the University of Wisconsin–Madison.”

“It strikes me that it’s not the cats who need their heads examined, because being mean to animals isn’t just stupid — it’s wrong, especially when there are better options that are actually relevant to humans, as there are in this case,” Maher says in the message, after listing in graphic detail examples of animal testing.

In response, the University issued a statement saying PETA “has tried mightily to stop important work on hearing at UW-Madison by making repeated, unsubstantiated and false claims about the work and its conduct.”

“In the latest effort to bring attention to their cause — the ultimate goal being to halt all research everywhere involving animal models — robocalls from comedian Bill Maher, an active supporter and frequent spokesperson for PETA, continue to distort the facts as established by no fewer than three federal investigations. Given that there is no factual basis for their claims, the only way to keep attention on an issue is to engage celebrities to promote their message or engage in stunts that add no substance to their claims and do little to inform honest debate.”

Bill Maher: Republicans Have A "Coke Addict"s Obsession With Repealing Obamacare"

BILL MAHER: For the folks who watch this show to catch up on what they missed during the week, here’s what you missed: the House Republicans, led by the tea party, really, I think, are holding hostage — and I don’t say that in a snarky way, I’ve heard them use that phrase themselves, I’ve heard Mitch McConnell say that — holding hostage, both the government — threatening to shut that down — and the world economy, if they don’t vote for the debt ceiling increase, because they have this coke addict’s obsession with repealing Obamacare.

Now, my question, because I don’t want to, you know, be just a liberal show and it’s all just a liberal point of view from the beginning — I don’t want to assume — this holding hostage to get what you want, is this a fair tactic?

DAVID FRUM: It’s an unstrategic tactic, it’s what you do when you don’t have a plan.

MAHER: And you’re the Republican.

FRUM: We need a plan, but I’m unhappy because we don’t have a plan. This is about to become law. Everything portends it’s about to be –

MAHER: It is law.

FRUM: Well, it’s going to go into effect the beginning of next week

[unintelligible]

FRUM: It is about to have a very likely devastating impact on American employment. We can already see the rise of part-time labor –

MAHER: We don’t know that.

FRUM: We do see that. If your workers work less than 30 hours, you’re exempted and we see that is where the growth in the labor market is. There are many other negative effects.

The Republican party needs to build a coalition in the country, it needs to have a plan to win elections and repeal the law that way. These parliamentary tactics are not done for the country, they’re done for the party. They’re for party management, but not for seriously winning.

JOY BEHAR: Didn’t President Obama run — this is what he was running on, right? He’s was elected on Obamacare.

MAHER: Reelected.

BEHAR: And reelected. So what are they bitching about? This is what the country obviously wanted.

CHRIS HAYES: Like the president said today. I ran against somebody who pledged to repeal Obamacare. It wasn’t a hidden part of the election, right. There was a national mandate for this law. (HBO’s Real Time, September 20, 2013)

Bill Maher: Immigration Reform Will "Just Create More Democrats"

BILL MAHER, HBO’S “REAL TIME” HOST: I think they don’t want the votes because you know what? They know if they’re going to take 11 million people and make them citizens and allow them to vote, they’re just creating more Democrats. Latinos who are mostly young — young trumps it all — they hate Republicans. They did a survey this week –

ANA NAVARRO, REPUBLICAN STRATEGIST: Now you are agreeing with Ann Coulter.

MAHER: I’m agreeing with facts.

NAVARRO: No –

MAHER: Wait. They did a study this week, young people, this is the College Republicans, they wanted to find out. These were people who voted for Obama who they could win back. They wanted to know how they felt about the Republicans. These are the words: close-minded, racist, rigid, old fashioned. That’s what young people think of Republicans. Probably because they are close-minded, racist, rigid and old fashioned.

NAVARRO: Let’s go back to the point about legalizing 11 million [illegal immigrants] means 11 million Democrats. As the only Latino on the panel, I like to opine on this. I’m a Republican Latino. We are not lemmings; we are people. We don’t follow just blindly, we have opinions.

MAHER: No.

NAVARRO: Let me just say –

MAHER: But 71% [of Latinos] voted for Obama.

NAVARRO: Because who were they going to vote for? Mitt Romney, who wanted to self-deport?

MAHER: And who are you going to put up next time that they’re going to like better?

NAVARRO: Oh, almost anybody.

KEVIN WILLIAMSON, NATIONAL REVIEW: How much luck did you have with McCain?

NAVARRO: Jeb Bush, Marco Rubio, almost anybody. We have absolutely no choice because we lose if we don’t. Our only choice is to try to get this done and then work very hard to recover some of that Hispanic vote. It’s not going to happen over night and it’s just not going to happen because of our immigration [inaudible]. We have no choice as Republicans.

WILLIAMSON: That’s a lot of wishful thinking. I mean, you didn’t have very good luck having them come out to vote for McCain, either. You know, you were in charge of that, right?

NAVARRO: Yes.

WILLIAMSON: So your experience told you what? That Latinos aren’t going to come vote for Republicans. Even a moderate guy, a ‘moderate’ like John McCain. I don’t think it’s 11 million Democrats, I think it’s more like 6 million. For every two, you know, you get one and you’re doing yourself a disservice.

MAHER: It’s a majority.

WILLIAMSON: And I think that they’re probably right about that. I don’t think that they’re going to win that vote back. (HBO’s Real Time, June 7, 2013)
