No Fed Taper But No Market Bubbles Either: Jefferies’ Ward McCarthy

No Fed Taper But No Market Bubbles Either: Jefferies’ Ward McCarthy

It’s Fed day, the day when the Fed issues its latest policy statement! The Fed is expected to leave policy as is, in the wake of questions about the health of the economy and uncertainty surrounding the fiscal fights in Washington.

Ward McCarthy, managing director and chief financial economist of the fixed income division at Jefferies, says it boils down to this: “With fiscal policy that is restrictive, monetary policy needs to continue to be accommodative.”

And while economists in a Bloomberg survey believe a taper will come in March, McCarthy thinks it’s wise to take it meeting by meeting because the decision will be data-dependent and Fed officials “keep telling us it’s not predetermined” — a point many people missed when they expected a pullback in Fed bond buying in September.

McCarthy says December is a longshot for any change in Fed policy because another fiscal fight is looming. Temporary funding for the government expires in mid-January and the debt ceiling suspension expires on February 7–both deadlines agreed to earlier this month as part of a plan to end the government shutdown.

But what are the consequences of the Fed continuing its easing policies? Laurence Fink, CEO of Blackrock, the world’s largest money manager, told a recent panel discussion in Chicago, “it’s imperative that the Fed begins to taper.” He cited “bubble-like markets” as the reason, referring to the huge increase in equity prices and the dramatic narrowing of spreads in corporate debt.

McCarthy disagrees. ” Almost by definition the primary function of QE is to cause markets to perform better than they would without it.” Check out the video to see why he doesn’t call it a bubble.

VIDEO: Elle Celebrates Women in Hollywood

It’s time for Elle Magazine’s Women in Hollywood issue, and some of the most fabulous ladies in the buz snagged spots on this years list! Reese Witherspoon opened up to the mag about how having kids changed her life. “Having kids made me clearer about who I was as a woman,” she said. Funny girl Melissa McCarthy also nabbed one of the spots and said Julia Louis Dreyfus is one of the comedians she admires most. Then there’s 21-year-old Shailene Woodley who dished about the future of her career saying, “I’m so young and I’m single and I just want to drift. I want to do something totally different before Insurgent. Life experience only helps us as actors. I need new experiences to draw upon.”

Kevin McCarthy: House Will Send Third Volley to Senate If Reid Rejects Last Night’s Bill

Jonathan Strong
National Review
Sept. 29, 2013

House GOP Whip Kevin McCarthy said the House will send a third government funding the bill with “a few other options” if the Democratically-controlled Senate rejects the bill passed in the House last night as expected.

“We will pass a bill…that will keep the government open, that will reflect the House, that I believe the Senate can accept, that will have fundamental changes to Obamacare that can protect the economy for America,” McCarthy said on Fox News Sunday.

The remarks confirm National Review Online’s reporting yesterday that House leadership is considering an 11th-hour play like passing a “clean” continuing resolution (CR) with language added to end a subsidy for congressional staffers to purchase health insurance with.

VIDEO: Melissa McCarthy Called "Hippo," "Tractor-Sized" by Movie Critic Rex Reed

Melissa McCarthy and Jason Batemen star in the new comedy, Identity Thief, hitting theaters this weekend, and unfortunately the comedy aspect is being overshadowed by an obnoxious review. Film critic Rex Reed absolutely ripped apart Melissa in his review in the New York Observer, calling her “tractor-sized,” a “screeching, humongous creep,” and “a gimmick comedian who has devoted her short career to being obese and obnoxious with equal success.” Then Reed tops it off by calling Melissa a “female hippo.” It’s one thing to insult the movie, but attacking Melissa for her size is just wrong!
