Yellen says she feels "weight" of leading Fed

Federal Reserve Chair Janet Yellen says the buck now “stops with me.”

Yellen gave her first news conference on Wednesday as head of the central bank, a highly anticipated event that is being closely watched by financial markets and other Fed observers looking to gain a better understanding of how she will run the Fed.

Yellen said that the economy continues to improve but that the labor market has yet to fully recover and the central bank will keep up its economic stimulus efforts.

Yellen took charge of the Fed on Feb. 3 becoming the first woman to lead the central bank.

(Also on POLITICO: Yellen meets the press)

Asked how life has been different around the Fed since she took over, Yellen said she now feels the weight of running the institution but that overall she doesn’t anticipate big changes for the central bank.

“I feel I’m very lucky that I’ve had a lot of Fed experience to draw on as I approach this role because it’s complicated and now in many ways I feel that the buck stops with me in terms of management of the FOMC and responsibility to assure that the Federal Reserve makes progress on its goals,” she said, before adding “In terms of the conduct of business, it’s pretty much the same as usual. I’m not envisioning — nor have there been so far — any radical changes in how the Federal Reserve does its business and that includes operating” the Fed’s policy setting committee.

Yellen used her first news conference to elaborate on the Fed’s recent policy decisions as well as to discuss the impact this winter’s bad weather has had on the economy.

(QUIZ: Do you know Janet Yellen?)

“Unusually harsh weather in January and February has made assessing the underlying strength of the economy especially challenging,” Yellen said reading from a prepared statement from behind a desk.

She said she is particularly concerned about the amount of people who have been unemployed for an extended period of time.

“The share of long term unemployment has been immensely high and has been very stubborn in bringing down,” she said. “That’s something I watch closely.”

While her first news conference has been highly anticipated, Yellen, 67, has had a few practice rounds already. She appeared before both the House Financial Services and Senate Banking committees in recent weeks where she faced a wide range of questions from eager lawmakers.

(Also on POLITICO: Full finance policy coverage)

The news conference is another opportunity for Yellen to set the tone for her tenure and lay out her vision for the Fed — as well as distinguish herself in any way from her predecessor, Ben Bernanke.

Yellen’s most significant challenge in the months ahead will be to oversee the winding down of the Fed’s stimulus program, known as quantitative easing. On Wednesday, the Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) announced that the central bank will reduce the amount of bonds it buys each month to keep long-term interest rates low by another $ 10 billion. It will now buy $ 55 billion in Treasury and mortgage bonds each month.

In another closely watched move, the FOMC on Wednesday updated its guidance with regard to when it could raise short-term interest rates.

The committee had previously said rates would stay at or near zero “at least as long as” the unemployment rate remains above 6.5 percent and inflation appears likely to remain below 2.5 percent.

Now, the Fed says it will likely be appropriate to keep rates below normal levels “for a considerable time” after its quantitative easing program ends, particularly if inflation remains below 2 percent and does not look like it will rise over the “longer-term.”

Financial markets have been keeping a close eye on how quickly the Fed will implement the “taper” and whether any new economic date will cause the central bank to pause he wind down of its economic stimulus program.

Another challenge for Yellen will be to communicate as clearly as possible the central bank’s decision-making process. Ambiguity can create room for investors to draw their own conclusions, which can lead to market volatility.

Turning down the thermostat can help you lose weight, study says

Americans love to crank up the thermostat, especially in bitterly cold times like these.

But a new study suggests turning it down a few degrees could actually help you lose weight.

We know. Not what you wanted to hear right now.

More from GlobalPost: What is a polar vortex? (And when is it going away?)

But Dutch researchers say regular exposure to mildly cold temperatures can make your body burn more calories to keep warm.

“Since most of us are exposed to indoor conditions 90 percent of the time, it is worth exploring health aspects of ambient temperatures,” lead author Wouter van Marken Lichtenbelt told CNN. “What would it mean if we let our bodies work again to control body temperature?”

Lichtenbelt and his team have been studying the phenomena for the past 10 years.

While most animals (humans included) shiver to stay warm, another type of shivering — called non-shivering thermogenesis — occurs when the temperature is cool but not cold, according to the research.

More from GlobalPost: US job growth falters as cold weather grips the nation

That type of shivering, activating what’s called “brown fat,” can burn up to 30 percent of the body’s energy and contribute to weight loss.

Brown fat, discovered in adults in 2009, burns calories instead of storing them like white fat.

So does this mean you should crank the heat down to 55 degrees and frolic about in a tank top and underwear?

Not necessarily. It’s more theory at this point, but researchers also said it wouldn’t hurt.

“It would do no harm,” Dr. Mitchell Lazar, chief of the division of endocrinology, diabetes and metabolism at the University of Pennsylvania, told HealthDay. “It’s worth a try for someone who is having trouble losing weight by diet and exercise alone.”

Tech Giants Throw Weight Behind Legislation Which Would ACTUALLY Rein In NSA Spying

Washington’s Blog
November 1, 2013

The head of the Senate Intelligence Committee – NSA shill Diane Feinstein – introduced a Trojan Horse of a bill today which pretends it reins in the NSA, but would actually legalize bulk surveillance on Americans.

But the tech giants just threw their support behind a real reform bill.  Specifically, Google, Apple, Microsoft, Yahoo, Facebook and AOL put their support behind the USA Freedom Act … the bill introduced by Senator Leahy and Congressman Sensenbrenner to start reining in the NSA for real.

The tech giants aren’t supporting the bill out of the goodness of their hearts, but because cooperating with the NSA has cost them tens of billions of dollars. And see this.

Iran Elections 2013: Is the Regime Beginning to Collapse Under Its Own Weight?

iran, elections, 2013:, is, the, regime, beginning, to, collapse, under, its, own, weight?,

Iran Elections 2013 Is the Regime Beginning to Collapse Under Its Own Weight

The Iranian resistance is set to reiterate its demands for democratic change and a non-nuclear Iran in an upcoming grand gathering in Paris on June 22. The event will echo the Iranian people’s slogan seen in graffiti and signs throughout Iran stating “my vote is for the overthrow” of the regime. This will coincide with Iran’s presidential election masquerade.

The internal divisions and infighting within the ruling circles of the Iranian regime has reached unprecedented levels just weeks before the upcoming presidential elections.

Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei has moved against political rivals Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani and Esfandiar Rahim Mashaei, disqualifying them from standing in the upcoming elections.

The move represents a decisive split in the ruling establishment of the regime, and heightens tensions between rival camps, leaving the potential for volatile consequences in the wake of this purge. Regardless of the outcome of the elections, this move represents an undeniable blow to the power base of the regime, and an encouraging sign for those fighting to overthrow the ruling theocracy.

Jacques Mallet du Panonce famously stated “the Revolution devours its children.” But in this case, Rafsanjani who was famously nicknamed “the pillar of the system” and once revered as a stalwart of the founder of this regime, Ayatollah Khomeini, was a key player in securing Ali Khamenei’s position as the Supreme Leader, now finds himself being pushed out of the regime he helped create. Rafsanjani was appointed as chair of the Expediency Council by Khamenei himself, and as a member of the Assembly of Experts has a direct say as to fitness of the Supreme Leader; yet the regime has devolved to a point in which it is unable to respect its own structures and power sharing arrangements.

Historically, the ruling establishment within the regime has been able to settle internal disputes rather quietly amongst its key players. The fact that Khamenei has been unable to prevent Ahmadinejad’s camp from putting forth Mashaei as a candidate, despite the fact that Ahmadinejad’s entire political career was formulated by Khamenei, shows just how weakened the Supreme Leader has become. As a result of this desperate state, Khamenei was forced to disqualify both Rafsanjani and Mashaei through the Council of Guardians, creating an embarrassing public spectacle and delegitimizing the regime as a whole.

The reality is that the regime’s rank and file are no longer a homogeneous entity, and since the discord and chaos of the 2009 elections, many of them have lost faith in Khamenei’s judgment as the unquestioned leader of Iran.

Faced with the current dilemma, Khamenei was forced to “pick his poison” in deciding whether to share power with Rafsanjani and thus accept growing opposition within the regime and risk being seen as weak, or making a surgery and purge and risking the threat of radicalizing the opposition. Both present very serious challenges to his survival. The showdown may amount to political suicide for him, but more importantly may mark the beginning of the disintegration of the Iranian regime as a whole.

Similar infighting in 2009 resulted in candidates openly exposing each other’s crimes, and harshly condemning the past and present failures of the leadership, a spectacle which opened up a crucial window in which 30 years of grievances were aired by the public. The split in the leadership was utilized by the populations to voice their discontent with the regime as a whole, with the chants of “down with the Supreme Leader” becoming a rallying cry.

The once sacred post of the Supreme Leader has yet to recover from the de-legitimization of 2009, and Khamenei has continued to lose confidence by those desperate to keep the regime alive.

The present situation has once again validated the opinion of the people that elections in Iran are a meaningless farce, and that the overthrow of the regime remains the only viable alternative.

The most organized Iranian opposition movement, i.e. the National Council of Resistance of Iran under the leadership of Maryam Rajavi and the PMOI, have always focused on a regime change. The wishful thinking of Western governments and their failed policy of engagement with the mullahs with a hope of moderation have only extended the life of this regime. This resistance, who for years has highlighted the regime’s incapacity for reform and has remained steadfast in its demands for a democratic secular republic in Iran, is the only option for a free and stable Iran.

A few Unhealthy Foods to Eliminate to Better A Man\"s Stamina

I have a few foods I don"t consume so I"m able to make sure my prostate remains in good health. The secret is to eat natural food only and avoid unnatural food. As an example, are you able to find cheese and cookies in the ocean? Can you find refined sugars and French fries in the wild? These are some of the things that I recommend to avoid so as to better your stamina and the health of your prostate.

Junk Foods

Eliminate foods that contain a lot of salts. If you like potato chips, meat jerky, pretzels, ham, bottle salad dressing, pizzas, hamburgers, hot dogs, packed dinners, for example pasta, canned soups, quit eating them straight away. Excessive salts are bad for your general physical stamina and prostate health. I used to like salted food much and I might add soy sauce to pretty much everything I consumed but I have quite eating them all. Convenience food aren"t natural food.

Hydrogenated and Saturated Fats

Avoid eating animal fats because they aren"t good for your staying power and prostate. If you like cakes, cookies, donuts and Fries, stop immediately. It is OK to consume some fat but select healthy fat such as olive oil, sesame oil, marg. Forget about butter though you can think it is better tasting than margarine. Your wellbeing is so very much more vital.

Fatty Protein

Avoid consumingg fatty meat like pork chops. Not only it will enhance the health of your prostate, you may shed the pounds and reduce your waist size. A smaller waistline is linked with better staying power and better prostate health. If you can become a vegan then go for it. If you cannot, always go for the lean meat like chicken breasts and fish protein.

Drinks to Avoid

Avoid drinking alcohol, sodas, coffee and black teas. Sodas has a lot of sugars. As I have mentioned earlier, not only they can cause you put on weight and cancerous cells love sugars. Moderate your alcohol, coffee and black teas instakes because they"re also bad for your prostate health.

Dairy Products

Men that enjoy dairy goods have increased risk of developing prostate cancer. So if you adore consuming ice cream, cheese and drinking milk, you may wish to decrease the intake of them or just eliminate them all. I don"t consumeany dairy stuff at all and I am in the best health of my life.

Processed Sugars

Most people love refined sugars and so do carcinogenic cells. Avoid white sugars from this point on. Add honey in your coffee rather than sugars and Avoid consuming candy, pastries, white bread and things that contains refined sugars. They don"t seem to be natural for your body. Always read the labels before you buy your foods. If there is refined sugar, put them back on the shelving.

Your health is crucial to you because an improved health can make you more happy. By becoming more knowledgeable knowledge regarding premature ejaculation cures, you may understand how to handle any condition you"ll encounter in days to come. Also , data on prostate problems is very important but the majority of guys do not know that.

VIDEO: Melissa McCarthy Called "Hippo," "Tractor-Sized" by Movie Critic Rex Reed

Melissa McCarthy and Jason Batemen star in the new comedy, Identity Thief, hitting theaters this weekend, and unfortunately the comedy aspect is being overshadowed by an obnoxious review. Film critic Rex Reed absolutely ripped apart Melissa in his review in the New York Observer, calling her “tractor-sized,” a “screeching, humongous creep,” and “a gimmick comedian who has devoted her short career to being obese and obnoxious with equal success.” Then Reed tops it off by calling Melissa a “female hippo.” It’s one thing to insult the movie, but attacking Melissa for her size is just wrong!
