US-Funded Hospital in Afghanistan Has 3 Light Bulbs, Forces Staff to Wash Newborns in River Water

A hospital in Afghanistan’s Parwan province, which cost US taxpayers almost $ 600,000, is so ill-equipped, hospital staff are washing newborn infants using untreated river water, the Special Inspector General for Afghanistan Reconstruction (SIGAR) reported on Wednesday. SIGAR’s visit, which was conducted in November 2013 (photos here), also found mold and mildew throughout the hospital; a lack of furniture and equipment; a serious risk for earthquake damage; and only enough electricity to operate three light bulbs in the entire facility. 

In 2009, a local Afghan contractor, Shafi Hakimi Construction Company, was commissioned to build Salang Hospital as part of a Department of Defense-funded reconstruction program. When a US Forces-Afghanistan (USFOR-A) task force first inspected the hospital when it was under construction in 2012, they determined it had major problems and residents of Salang district wouldn’t have adequate healthcare until they were fixed. In November 2012, the contractor was paid in full. But when SIGAR inspected a year later, it found “the deficiencies identified by the task force had not been corrected.”

NBC News, which recently visited the facility, observed “desperate” hospital staff attempting to administer dental care to a 12-year-old girl—even though they only had access to six pieces of rusty dental equipment. As NBC described it: “The girl was shivering with fear, and began crying after the doctor gave her a shot in her gums. Another man held her still as Sarwy swiftly tilted her head back, opened her mouth and yanked out one of her teeth with a pair of pliers.” 

Hospital staff told SIGAR that they are paying about $ 18 a month of their own money to a neighbor, in order to get enough electricity to operate the three light-bulbs in the hospital. Additionally, SIGAR found that the contractor built the hospital two stories high, instead of one, without authorization from US officials or further study. “The hospital does not serve the medical needs of the people of Salang district as intended and may be a danger to its patients and staff because of the potential for the structure’s collapse in an earthquake,” the report reads. 

This account differs sharply with a press release put out by US Forces-Afghanistan yesterday, which argued that despite the SIGAR report, “the facility is currently providing improved medical services” and noted that, “local ministry officials are currently in the process of hiring a surgeon and other staff and have installed a solar power generation unit.” John Sopko, the Special Inspector General for Afghanistan Reconstruction, told NBC, “either no one from USFOR-A has actually visited this facility recently or USFOR-A is living in an alternate reality.” 

Mother Jones has reached out to US Forces-Afghanistan to find out when they last visited the facility. According to a January 21 US Army document obtained by Mother Jones, US forces have been unable to conduct a physical re-inspection of the hospital since the SIGAR notified them of their findings on January 3, due to “reduced combat forces [and] threats in the area.” â€‹

Chinese Man Turns Green After Eating Too Many River Snails

I imagine that there are people who will now do this intentionally. AsiaOne reports:

A 24-year-old man was hospitalised in Guizhou province, China, after he ate too many river snails too frequently and turned green as a result.

The Chinese Center for Disease Control reportedly confirmed that he was infected by parasitic flatworms that live in animal livers. The parasite apparently entered his body because he was eating river snails on a daily basis.

He began complaining of a sharp abdominal pain about two months ago, but did not seek medical attention until he started exhibiting some very strange symptoms. His skin and the whites of his eyes started to turn green.

Doctors finally removed four common liver fluke (fasciola hepatica) from his common bile duct. Doctors said that the four parasites were each about 10mm long.

Body Found in NY River Where Bride-to-be Vanished

Authorities pulled a woman’s body from the Hudson River on Saturday near where a bride-to-be and her fiance’s best man were hurled into the water when a speedboat carrying six friends crashed into a construction barge near the Tappan Zee Bridge.

Officials were working to confirm that it was the body of 30-year-old Lindsey Stewart, who has been missing since the Friday night accident, but they said it appeared to fit her description.

The search for the missing man, 30-year-old Mark Lennon, was continuing, said Rockland County undersheriff Robert VanCura.

The crash happened shortly after the 21-foot Stingray left the village of Piermont for a short trip across the river to Tarrytown, about a half-hour’s drive north of New York City, authorities said.

The groom-to-be, art teacher Brian Bond, was among the four injured. He and Lindsey Stewart were two weeks away from their planned Aug. 10 wedding.

Stewart’s mother, Carol, said earlier Saturday that she was praying for a miracle.

Four people were hospitalized after being pulled from the damaged boat. Bond, 35, was knocked unconscious in the crash but later woke and was able to call 911, Carol Stewart said.

Lindsey Stewart’s stepfather, Walter Kosik, said the couple have known each other since they were young children and used to go to church together.

“They have been friends the whole time, and they fell in love about 3 1/2 years ago,” Kosik said.

They were to be married at the Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Pearl River, with a reception at a vineyard in Hillburn, he said.

Rockland County Sheriff’s Department Chief William Barbera declined to identify the other people aboard the boat. He said the barge, one of several loaded with construction material for an upcoming replacement of the bridge, was equipped with lights, but it was still difficult to see on the water so late at night.

The cause of the accident is under investigation.

The New York State Thruway Authority, which is overseeing the bridge project, said it was reviewing safety procedures.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with the victims and their families during this difficult time,” the authority said in a statement. It added that the lighting on the barges appeared to be functioning normally.

Pile driving that had been scheduled to take place Saturday was suspended because of the accident.

The driver of a speedboat that slammed into a construction barge on the Hudson River — hurling a bride-to-be and her fiance’s best man into the water — has been charged with vehicular manslaughter, authorities said Saturday.

Jojo John, 35, of Nyack was also charged with three counts of vehicular assault at his hospital bedside as he recovers from Friday night’s crash, Rockland County Sheriff’s Department Chief William Barbera said.

John’s bail was set at $ 250,000 and he will be transported to the Rockland County Jail after he is released from the hospital, Barbera said. John is suspected of operating the boat while intoxicated, according to Barbera.

Earlier Saturday, authorities pulled a woman’s body from the water that matches the description of 30-year-old Lindsey Stewart. The bride-to-be was hurled into the water after the accident near the Tappan Zee Bridge, about a half-hour’s drive north of New York City.

Stewart, of Piermont, worked for an insurance company. She was set to be married Aug. 10. Her fiance, art teacher Brian Bond, was among four others injured in the crash.

Rescuers are still trying to locate one other passenger, her fiance’s best man, 30-year-old Mark Lennon.

Two teenage girls, whose bodies were found by police divers in the River Wear in Tyne and Wear, have been named.

Passers-by tried to rescue the pair who were discovered on Tuesday evening after getting into difficulty near a viaduct in Fatfield, Washington.

They were named locally as Chloe Fowler and Toni-Beth Purvis.

A spokesman for Northumbria Police said inquiries would now be carried out into the circumstances surrounding the deaths.

Onlookers said they believed the girls jumped into the river for “fun” and to “keep cool” but this has not been confirmed by police.

Northumbria Police said the river was still tidal at the point where the girls went missing just before 15:00 BST and there was a lot of debris and foliage in the water.

Supt Alan Veitch said: “One was an off-duty police officer going for a run who dived in and saved a boy who was trying to save one of the missing girls.

“Another gentleman dived in and swam the width of the river to get to one of the girls but he came up empty-handed. He was distraught, as you can imagine.”

About 100 emergency services staff were involved in the search, which took about six hours.
