9 Ways We Waste Water Everyday

9 Ways We Waste Water Everyday
http://pixel.quantserve.com/pixel/p-89EKCgBk8MZdE.gif

Environmental awareness and the plight to decrease water consumption is a growing trend. Not only is it now “hip” to be a crusader for a greener Earth, but companies and technologies devoted to reducing  devastation caused by unsustainable living methods are growing in popularity.

Even educated consumers are making a greater effort to conserve resources; according to Environmental Leader, 82 percent of consumers now buy green, despite the current economy. This is great news for every inhabitant on this planet – and also affirms that the hard work spent campaigning to raise such awareness is finally paying off.

But the commonly known “water-wasting” habits – such as brushing one’s teeth with the water on, taking long showers, or watering lawns in drought – are only some examples of how the precious resource is wasted. To enlighten readers on the other habits which harm the Earth – and how they may also be avoided – a list of some of the 9 ways water is currently being wasted follows:

  • Being a Fashionista

There’s nothing wrong with looking good, but the trend to hoard closets of clothes, especially jeans, can hurt the environment. According to the India Textile Journal, the textile company is one of the biggest creators of waste water worldwide.  And according to the EPA, it takes 2,900 gallons of water to produce just one pair of jeans.

The solution? Limit your casual shopping, and “go vintage” by shopping in thrift stores to find recycled goods. Buying “organic” and fair trade is also another alternative to reduce the amount of water commonly caused by “wet processing” materials.

  • Cooling off in Your Backyard Pool

We know the summer months can be torturous, and although a refreshing dip in your backyard, chlorinated pool sounds good, it’s disastrous for the environment. Besides the amount of water required to fill the pool, cement cracks and evaporation can lead to almost double the amount of water being used.

The National Leak Foundation in Mesa, Arizona, reported that 30% of pools have leaks in them, many of which go unnoticed due to the automatic refilling mechanism installed on most pools.

In addition, environments in the Southwest record some of the hottest temperatures during the summer, and in effect a 400 square-foot surface pool can lose over 2,500 gallons of water in one month!

The solution? Forgo the private pool and enjoy the public one at a park or private club. If you already have a pool, be sure to check for leaks in the liner and cracks underwater. In addition, always put a cover on your pool when it’s not being used.

  • Living in “Sin City”

Las Vegas may offer a lot, but in terms of sustainability, it’s lacking. Just choosing to live in the city means that the approximate amount of every resident’s resource use exceeds that of the average consumer.

How is this? Due to the hot and arid climate, evaporation is a major concern in Southwest cities. Vegas in particular is home to a number of golf courses and luxury resorts, and a large amount of water is needed to keep the grounds green and flourishing. According to the Southern Nevada Water Authority, water laws already stand that restrict lawn size and assigned-day watering.

The Solution? Embrace the desert flora. Instead of working tirelessly for thirsty-looking lawns, Nevadans can landscape around their homes with cacti and other desert shrubbery. Other substitutes for those who don’t want to give up their green-looking front yards include: astro-turf, or other grass-substitutes which are affordable, easy to install, and (according to the EPA) can save residents 2/3 the cost of regular lawn water.

  • Cheeseburger Cravings

The consumption of meat is a controversial issue, but according to a UNESCO Institute for Water Education Study conducted between 1996-2005, “29% of the total water footprint of the agricultural sector in the world is related to the production of animal products.” The study also relayed that 1/3 of that is related to cattle production.

“The water footprint of any animal product is larger than the water footprint of a wisely chosen crop product with equivalent nutritional value,” the study stated.

The Solution? Consider cutting down on your meat consumption (Meatless Mondays is a growing craze), and focus on transitioning to a diet that includes healthier and more nourishing plant-based options.

  • Not Letting Your Yellow Mellow

Opening up the toilet lid and being greeted with a tank of un-flushed pee isn’t pleasant, however not flushing is only a minor offense compared to actually doing it. Networx reported that it takes 1.6 gallons of water to flush a mere 10 ounces of urine, rendering perfectly good water undrinkable. Since the average persons urinates around six times per day, that means the every individual flushes about 2,774 gallons of water yearly.

The Solution? Unless a #2 is initiated, don’t flush as frequently.

  • Buying From Your Barista

A steaming cup of java on the way to work keeps many commuters going, but the environmental/water effects aren’t as appreciable. In 2008 a scandal erupted around Starbucks’ water use. When a customer spotted a running faucet, she asked the barista why it was left on. The girl replied, “Oh, that’s just what we’re supposed to do.”

Starbucks’ “dipping wells”, as the streams of water were called, wasted 6 million gallons of water per day. While the company has so far decreased their water by about 21.6%, an enormous 4,704,000 gallons are still used every day.

The Solution? Brew your own fair-trade, organic coffee at home. Add in some local, raw, and untreated honey, some fresh coconut milk, and a drop of citrus essential oil, and you’ll find you never even needed the over-priced latte – plus you’re saving the Earth and its water supply.

  • Eating Grocery Store Produce

Buying at the local grocery store seems like the optimal option to attain fresh produce, right? Not nearly.  The issue between buying at a farmers market versus the superstore, is that most people only see two differences: the price, and the convenience of the grocery store.

But conventional farming uses a significant amount of water, according to Wired Magazine, and the environmental effects are not favorable. The source cited that “70% of the world’s water consumption is used by farmers, and most of it is not going to good use.” Wasteful irrigation systems, overly-dry land that needs an abundance of water, and a lack of efficiency are a problem.

The Solution? Strive to obtain all your produce local, and optimally from an organic, bio-dynamic source. You can find local farms here, and even grow your own produce to ensure less water is wasted, and mineral-rich soil is being utilized to grow nourishing fare.

  • Being Too Clean in the Kitchen

Contrary to popular belief, a dishwasher can actually be more efficient at saving energy and water than hand washing. TreeHugger shared how this is only true if the machine is run when it is full, however. Oftentimes those who live alone or with one other person don’t’ think twice before running a half-empty dishwasher – and this is a big water waster.

The non-Energy Saver kind of dishwasher common in most households can use about 6-7 gallons of water for every load, and that amount adds up if only a few dishes are being cleaned in the process.

The Solution? Only run the dishwasher when it is full. If you can’t stand to have dirty dishes left sitting in the rack, wipe them with a damp cloth, or hand-wash them and be done with the task.

  • Being a Top Loader

Who knew that the structure of your washing machine could affect your water footprint? But the company Networx has reported that front-loading washing machines are often more energy and water efficient than top loading machines. Although the front-loading machine still uses 20 gallons of water per cycle, National Geographic claims that top-loaders use twice that amount.

The Solution? Invest in a front-loader washing machine and watch your water bill decline.

  • These uncommonly known water wasters can easily be fixed. Take action today so that water equality may be a reality for the future.

Overemphasis on “Climate Change” Has Made California’s Water Crisis Worse

    Joel B. Pollak
    Breitbart
    February 16, 2014

President Barack Obama offered the desperate farmers and farmworkers of the drought-stricken Central Valley a desultory relief package last week: $ 1 billion for a “climate resilience fund,” plus “summer meals” and various other kinds of aid. For a president who boasts of his willingness to use executive action, it was a pathetic display of sophistry, full of mumbles about how water management is not a “zero-sum game”–though in this case, it is.

    Despite California

Despite California’s worsening drought, little has been done to improve water storage infrastructure. Credit: Peripitus via Wiki

As the Investor’s Business Daily and countless others have noted, water management in California is a trade-off between the needs of farmers and the demands of the environmental movement, which has embraced the delta smelt, an obscure endangered species in the Sacramento-San Joaquin River delta. The Democrats, and Obama, have supported the environmentalists over the farmers–and the subsequent flushing of California’s reservoirs.

It may be true that the delta smelt is a species on which the whole regional ecosystem depends, and that its disappearance could have a negative effect on fishing, among other impacts. But that calls for wise management involving all stakeholders–not the blunt instrument of the federal courts, which utopian environmental activists have used precisely because they do not want to have to face the real challenges of water conservation.

Rachel Maddow slams handling of West Virginia water crisis: ‘A disaster of the ongoing variety’

    By Arturo Garcia

    Rachel Maddow 020514 [MSNBC]

MSNBC host Rachel Maddow pointed out on Wednesday night that the issues surrounding West Virginia’s water supply have not abated, despite the assurances by Gov. Earl Ray Tomblin’s (D) administration that the problem would be resolved quickly.

“If that is where you left the story, if you figured, ‘Oh, water’s back on, that must be the end of it,’ then what you missed in this story was this situation going from really bad to even worse to ‘Oh my God, how is this happening?’,” Maddow said.

In the days since she first highlighted the toxic Jan. 9 spill at a Charleston facility — which left 300,000 residents without water — Maddow pointed out that not only have officials been forced to reverse course on at least one directive that the water was safe again, but that Freedom Industries, the company in charge of the plant, reported that a second chemical had leaked 19 days after the initial incident.

In the latest incident, Maddow pointed out that two schools reported “the return of the syrupy smell” emanating from their water pipes, forcing them to be flushed again. Meanwhile, residents suffering from liver or kidney illnesses or immune system difficulties have been advised not to drink the water.

Regardless, Tomblin and officials from the Center for Disease Control and the Environmental Protection Agency insisted to the public that the water is safe, leading to a scene at a press conference where local reporters pushed back against their claims.

“There’s a big issue in the community — there’s no faith,” one reporter was heard saying in a clip played by Maddow. “There’s no faith in the water. There’s no faith in the system. Clearly, one of the issues is, people would like their homes tested. They’re worried about the pipes.”

However, Tomblin initially balked at the prospect of having officials test water pipes for residents statewide, before apparently backtracking on that Wednesday afternoon.

“This has been worse than an accident in West Virginia,” Maddow charged. “This has been a disaster of the ongoing variety.”

Watch Maddow’s commentary, as aired Wednesday on MSNBC, below.

    WATER WARNING IN SOCHI

    By John Dodge

CHICAGO (CBS) — We all know how the old saying goes when you travel: “Don’t drink the water.”

Well in Sochi, Russia, you had better not TOUCH the water, either.

When Chicago Tribune reporter Stacy St. Clair, who is covering the Winter Olympics for the newspaper, arrived at her hotel, she was informed that there was a problem with the water and it had been shut off.

Then hotel staff delivered an ominous warning: “Do not use on your face because it contains something very dangerous.”

Her tweet about the situation has gone viral.

Water was eventually restored, but it came out of the tap in a less than appealing color. (See above.)

“On the bright side, I now know what very dangerous face water looks like,” St. Clair tweeted.

“Also on the bright side: I just washed my face with Evian, like I’m a Kardashian or something.”

US-Funded Hospital in Afghanistan Has 3 Light Bulbs, Forces Staff to Wash Newborns in River Water

A hospital in Afghanistan’s Parwan province, which cost US taxpayers almost $ 600,000, is so ill-equipped, hospital staff are washing newborn infants using untreated river water, the Special Inspector General for Afghanistan Reconstruction (SIGAR) reported on Wednesday. SIGAR’s visit, which was conducted in November 2013 (photos here), also found mold and mildew throughout the hospital; a lack of furniture and equipment; a serious risk for earthquake damage; and only enough electricity to operate three light bulbs in the entire facility.

In 2009, a local Afghan contractor, Shafi Hakimi Construction Company, was commissioned to build Salang Hospital as part of a Department of Defense-funded reconstruction program. When a US Forces-Afghanistan (USFOR-A) task force first inspected the hospital when it was under construction in 2012, they determined it had major problems and residents of Salang district wouldn’t have adequate healthcare until they were fixed. In November 2012, the contractor was paid in full. But when SIGAR inspected a year later, it found “the deficiencies identified by the task force had not been corrected.”

NBC News, which recently visited the facility, observed “desperate” hospital staff attempting to administer dental care to a 12-year-old girl—even though they only had access to six pieces of rusty dental equipment. As NBC described it: “The girl was shivering with fear, and began crying after the doctor gave her a shot in her gums. Another man held her still as Sarwy swiftly tilted her head back, opened her mouth and yanked out one of her teeth with a pair of pliers.”

Hospital staff told SIGAR that they are paying about $ 18 a month of their own money to a neighbor, in order to get enough electricity to operate the three light-bulbs in the hospital. Additionally, SIGAR found that the contractor built the hospital two stories high, instead of one, without authorization from US officials or further study. “The hospital does not serve the medical needs of the people of Salang district as intended and may be a danger to its patients and staff because of the potential for the structure’s collapse in an earthquake,” the report reads.

This account differs sharply with a press release put out by US Forces-Afghanistan yesterday, which argued that despite the SIGAR report, “the facility is currently providing improved medical services” and noted that, “local ministry officials are currently in the process of hiring a surgeon and other staff and have installed a solar power generation unit.” John Sopko, the Special Inspector General for Afghanistan Reconstruction, told NBC, “either no one from USFOR-A has actually visited this facility recently or USFOR-A is living in an alternate reality.”

Mother Jones has reached out to US Forces-Afghanistan to find out when they last visited the facility. According to a January 21 US Army document obtained by Mother Jones, US forces have been unable to conduct a physical re-inspection of the hospital since the SIGAR notified them of their findings on January 3, due to “reduced combat forces [and] threats in the area.” â€‹

California drought: State Water Project will deliver no water this summer

    posted on Feb, 2 2014 @ 04:53 PM

For the first time in its 54-year history, the State Water Project, a backbone of California’s water system, will provide no water to urban residents or farmers this year because of the severe drought, state officials said Friday. The State Water Project, approved by voters in 1960 and a key legacy of former Gov. Pat Brown, the governor’s late father, is a massive system of 21 dams and 701 miles of pipes and canals that moves water from Northern California to the south. It essentially takes melting snow from the Sierra Nevada, captures it and transports it from Lake Oroville in Butte County through the Sacramento-San Joaquin River Delta all the way to San Diego. In doing so, it provides drinking water for 23 million people from Silicon Valley to the Los Angeles basin and irrigates about 750,000 acres of farmland.

Zero water for farms in calif.
Food prices in the west will double.
This in part is because the treehuggers have blocked new water projects in calif for the last 40 years

"Too Liberal" McCain in Hot Water With Arizona GOP

(Newser) – Seems John McCain is getting too liberal for Arizona conservatives—so liberal that the state’s Republican party has formally reprimanded the senator for his “disastrous and harmful” record, Politico reports. At a party meeting in Tempe yesterday, the party hammered McCain for assisting Democrats on immigration reform, ignoring a GOP plan to defund ObamaCare, and criticizing conservative Republicans while keeping “eerily silent against liberals.” Not only that, he kept telling a rather unkind joke about Congress, the Atlantic Wire reports.

Congress “can’t get lower in the polls,” the joke goes (thanks, Atlantic Wire). “We’re down to blood relatives and paid staffers now.” But the censure sounds like no joke: The state GOP vowed to “no longer support, campaign for, or endorse” McCain until he backs the party platform. McCain’s office had no comment, but former Sen. Jon Kyl, another Arizona Republican, spoke up for him: To say McCain “doesn’t have a conservative voting record—that’s just baloney,” he told the Arizona Republic. “I’ve gone to dozens of these meetings and every now and then some wacky resolution gets passed.” At this meeting, some 1,600 committee members also voted to abolish a Constitutional amendment allowing the direct election of senators by the voting public, Reuters reports.
