State senator stabbed, son dead, state police say

Democratic state Sen. Creigh Deeds has been stabbed in his home.

Democratic state Sen. Creigh Deeds has been stabbed in his home.

  • NEW: Lawmaker’s son withdrew from college last month, school says

  • Police say state Sen. Creigh Deeds stabbed in head, torso

  • His son, Austin “Gus” Deeds, dies of a gunshot wound, police say

  • No motive is offered, but police aren’t looking for any suspects, spokeswoman says

(CNN) — Whatever happened, it was an awful tragedy: a state senator repeatedly stabbed in the head and torso; his 24-year-old son fatally wounded by a gunshot.

That’s the scene Virginia State Police and Bath County, Virginia, sheriff’s deputies encountered when they rushed to the scene of state Sen. Creigh Deeds’ home in response to a 911 call Tuesday morning.

Deeds was airlifted to a Charlottesville hospital, where he was in critical condition Tuesday afternoon, a hospital spokeswoman said.

His son, Austin “Gus” Deeds, died of a gunshot wound — despite the efforts of troopers to revive him, Virginia State Police spokeswoman Corinne Geller said.

While she offered no motive for the incident Tuesday morning, she said authorities were not seeking any suspects.

Geller declined to say who called 911, if the call came from the Deeds’ home or any other details about the incident.

She did say that Deeds was able to talk with investigators both before he was airlifted to the hospital and after. The senator’s family is with him at the hospital, she said.

Deeds, 55, is well known in Virginia political circles. A Democrat, he ran for attorney general in 2005 and for governor in 2009, both times against Republican Bob McDonnell, who is now Virginia’s governor.

His son withdrew from The College of William & Mary last month after being enrolled off-and-on since 2007, according to a statement from the school.

McDonnell issued a statement calling Tuesday’s events “heartbreaking.”

“In this tough and sad time, our thoughts and prayers are with the Deeds family. The news from this morning is utterly heartbreaking,” he said. “Creigh Deeds is an exceptional and committed public servant who has always done what he believes is best for Virginia and who gives his all to public service. He cares deeply about Virginia, and the people of Virginia care deeply for him.”

On Twitter, Sen. Mark Warner called the report “stunning news.”

“I am praying for @CreighDeeds and his family at this very, very difficult time,” he tweeted.

US Soldier Watches Helplessly as His Pregnant Wife is Stabbed During Home Invasion that Interrupted Their Video Chat

A soldier deployed overseas was video chatting with his pregnant wife, who was one week from her due date, when something unforeseen occurred. No, it was her water breaking or labor pains. Instead, his pregnant wife literally labored for her life and the life of her unborn child after a burglar started stabbing her in real time.

KFOX14 reported that Corey Moss, a 19-year-old Fort Bliss soldier, went to the Pooles’ residence to talk to Rachel Poole about money he owed her husband, who is stationed in southwest Asia. However, after realizing that she wasn’t home, he didn’t simply leave. Instead, he broke into the house and waited for her.

Upon returning home, unaware that an intruder was lying in wait, Rachel began video chatting with her husband Justin.

That’s when the knife-wielding Moss lunged from behind and stabbed her multiple times in her body and face.

All the while, the horrified husband, who was thousands of miles away, was helplessly listening to the brutal assault.

According to the affidavit, Rachel immediately recognized Moss and cleverly yelled his name several times during the attack so that her husband could identify him.

It worked.

Following the attack, Moss fled to Fort Bliss military base. He was unaware that Justin Poole had called in advance and alerted them to the crime. Additionally, Rachel called the local police and gave them his name.

As a result, he was detained by the military police. The knife was also recovered.

EL Paso Police said that he admitted to the offense and was charged with criminal attempted capital murder. I’m no lawyer, but I think he should’ve been charged with two counts of attempted capital murder.

Fortunately, in spite of Rachel needing surgery for her wounds and fractures, the unborn baby girl, who the couple plans to name Isabella, is in good condition.

On his Facebook page, Justin vented, “I promised to give my life for this freedom not the other way around. I failed her but never again.”

Let’s hope the justice system doesn’t “fail” this family and this perp receives what he deserves.
