Senator McCain meets Ukrainian protest leaders amid rival rallies

KIEV (Reuters) – U.S. Senator John McCain met Ukrainian opposition leaders in Kiev on Saturday and voiced support for protesters camped out for weeks in the capital, a move sure to anger Moscow for what it sees as Western meddling in its backyard.

The street protests started after the November 21 decision by President Viktor Yanukovich – seeking the best possible deal for Ukraine to stave off bankruptcy – to walk away from a trade pact with Europe at the last minute and seek closer ties with its old Soviet master.

The movement has since grown in size and vehemence, bringing tens of thousands onto the streets in a series of rallies, becoming an all-out protest against the president and his cabinet.

McCain is the latest of a string of European and American dignitaries to tour the sprawling protest camp set up behind tall barricades – prompting Russia to accuse the West of excessive involvement.

McCain was due to be joined by the chairman of the Senate’s Europe subcommittee, Chris Murphy, on Sunday.

“I am proud of the people of Ukraine and their steadfast efforts for democracy,” McCain told reporters after meeting the country’s Foreign Minister Leonid Kozhara.

McCain then met opposition leaders – the ex-boxing champion Vitaly Klitchko, former economy minister Arseny Yatsenyuk and far right nationalist Oleh Tyahnybog – who are calling for Yanukovich’s government to resign and for early elections.

Police violence on November 30 against what was initially a pro-Europe demonstration shocked Ukrainians, setting a match to deep-seated anger over corruption and sleaze.

U.S. Democrats and Republicans have condemned the harsh measures and on Friday senators issued a resolution calling for the United States to consider sanctions in case there is further violence against peaceful demonstrators.

“I heard he (McCain) was here. It’s nice that they know of us, that they remember us. It is great that they support us,” said Volodimir Tarabanov, 28, who works for a delivery company in Kiev.

STABILITY

Thousands of Yanukovich supporters staged a rival rally in Kiev on Saturday, many bused in from Donetsk and other cities in eastern Ukraine – the traditional stronghold of the president’s Party of Regions.

“We are here to support the president and stability,” 18-year-old Maria Nikolayeva said, holding the Party of Regions blue flag. “Yanukovich is our best prospect at the moment … I don’t see any alternative.”

In an attempt to defuse weeks of unrest, Yanukovich on Saturday dismissed the head of Kiev’s state administration and a national security aide over the violence on November 30. Prosecutor General Viktor Pshonka said two more police officials involved that night were under investigation.

But protesters continued to stream into the capital for the weekend protest. Talks between the government and the opposition on Friday appeared to go nowhere.

Sweden’s foreign minister said Russia should not feel threatened if Ukraine moved closer to the European Union.

“Ukraine has a free trade agreement (FTA) with Russia and we have nothing against that,” Carl Bildt told Reuters on the sidelines of a conference in Monaco.

“Why should they object that the Ukraine has an FTA with the EU? It is a win-win for Ukraine and Russia. Why they should see everything as a zero sum game? It’s not,” said Bildt, who was closely involved in EU talks with the Ukraine.

TENSIONS IN THE CAPITAL

The proximity of rival demonstrations in Kiev – separated only by a line of riot police – raised fears of fresh violence.

“The most difficult matters should and can only be solved at the negotiating table. People should not be driven away from their work, from their families,” Prime Minister Mykola Azarov told supporters. “Let’s tell the people to go back home to their families and their business.”

Sergei Bychok, a 43-year-old electrician, said he came to the pro-government rally because he wanted stability.

“I got my salary but a lot of people are here because they are afraid they won’t,” he said in a whisper, referring to widespread accusations among Yanukovich opponents that the authorities paid or pressured people to attend their rally.

In the square held by the anti-government protesters – now known as the “Maidan”, meaning “Square”, or the “Euro-maidan” – the atmosphere was peaceful.

For those who stayed overnight, the day began with early morning prayers followed by an aerobics session led from the stage. The crowds grew denser towards the evening with people holding up placards picturing Yanukovich and Azarov behind bars and sporting stickers reading “Raise Ukraine!”.

“I’m here for Europe and against Yanukovich. For me it’s almost the same because it’s the European Union association that is our chance to rid Ukraine of corruption,” said Oleh, a 22-year-old engineering student. “We will be here a month or as long as it takes.”

WASHINGTON Nov 20 (Reuters) – Janet Yellen’s bid to lead the Federal Reserve won a significant boost on Wednesday when one of her biggest critics in the U.S. Senate said he had decided to support her nomination.

Republican Senator Bob Corker of Tennessee said in a statement that he would set aside his reservations about Yellen because he believes she will bring more transparency to the U.S. central bank and has pledged to reduce Fed bond purchases as soon as economic data support such a move.

“In the end, I do believe she has the qualifications necessary to be the Fed chairman and plan to support her nomination,” said Corker, who voted against Yellen’s nomination as Fed vice chair in 2010.

Corker is a member of the Senate Banking Committee, which will vote on Thursday on whether to send Yellen’s nomination to the full Senate. Although she is expected to win confirmation relatively easily, Corker’s support could help persuade a handful of other Senate Republicans to drop their opposition.

Yellen’s nomination needs 60 votes to overcome procedural hurdles in the Senate, where Democrats control 55 votes.

Corker said he had changed his mind as a result of discussions with Yellen.

“I would prefer to see someone who held a more modest view regarding the limits of monetary policy on our economy, and I have been clear about that,” said Corker, a longtime critic of the Fed’s bond buying program aimed at holding down borrowing costs.

“During our discussions, she made a commitment to moderate purchases as soon as she believes the data supports that action and shows that the current status cannot continue,” Corker said.

He added that he was concerned about Yellen’s lack of experience in regulation of large, systemically important financial institutions and said he hopes she will “work hard to overcome this deficit and not just rely on others on the Fed board for this expertise.”

Corker also said he hopes Yellen will develop a cadre of market experts and practitioners who can help advise her in the event of another financial crisis.

“As a result of these conversations, I do believe she will bring a more transparent approach to Fed decisions and guidance,” Corker said.

“She will approach decisions with a more rules-based methodology. She understands that monetary policy is a blunt object, that distortions are occurring, and that the affluent disproportionately benefit from easy money policies.”

State senator stabbed, son dead, state police say

Democratic state Sen. Creigh Deeds has been stabbed in his home.

Democratic state Sen. Creigh Deeds has been stabbed in his home.

  • NEW: Lawmaker’s son withdrew from college last month, school says

  • Police say state Sen. Creigh Deeds stabbed in head, torso

  • His son, Austin “Gus” Deeds, dies of a gunshot wound, police say

  • No motive is offered, but police aren’t looking for any suspects, spokeswoman says

(CNN) — Whatever happened, it was an awful tragedy: a state senator repeatedly stabbed in the head and torso; his 24-year-old son fatally wounded by a gunshot.

That’s the scene Virginia State Police and Bath County, Virginia, sheriff’s deputies encountered when they rushed to the scene of state Sen. Creigh Deeds’ home in response to a 911 call Tuesday morning.

Deeds was airlifted to a Charlottesville hospital, where he was in critical condition Tuesday afternoon, a hospital spokeswoman said.

His son, Austin “Gus” Deeds, died of a gunshot wound — despite the efforts of troopers to revive him, Virginia State Police spokeswoman Corinne Geller said.

While she offered no motive for the incident Tuesday morning, she said authorities were not seeking any suspects.

Geller declined to say who called 911, if the call came from the Deeds’ home or any other details about the incident.

She did say that Deeds was able to talk with investigators both before he was airlifted to the hospital and after. The senator’s family is with him at the hospital, she said.

Deeds, 55, is well known in Virginia political circles. A Democrat, he ran for attorney general in 2005 and for governor in 2009, both times against Republican Bob McDonnell, who is now Virginia’s governor.

His son withdrew from The College of William & Mary last month after being enrolled off-and-on since 2007, according to a statement from the school.

McDonnell issued a statement calling Tuesday’s events “heartbreaking.”

“In this tough and sad time, our thoughts and prayers are with the Deeds family. The news from this morning is utterly heartbreaking,” he said. “Creigh Deeds is an exceptional and committed public servant who has always done what he believes is best for Virginia and who gives his all to public service. He cares deeply about Virginia, and the people of Virginia care deeply for him.”

On Twitter, Sen. Mark Warner called the report “stunning news.”

“I am praying for @CreighDeeds and his family at this very, very difficult time,” he tweeted.

Wowza, Has Senator Johnson And The News Been Reading My Posts?

You know as time goes on, I keep hearing more and more of my ideologies mentioned in the news. Are they all reading my posts? Nah… But it is fun watching all my thoughts coming to fruition in the news. But I was especially amused at the adoption of my Titanic theme.

This was my first new thread at ATS after a short absence. Others argued with me that Obama did not commit multiple frauds and especially election fraud.

ATS – Elouina- Obama Committed Multiple Frauds With Obamacare

Video Transcript – Senator Johnson hints upcoming impeachment of Obama for massive fraud in Obamacare…

Senator Johnson:
“Consumer fraud this massive in the private sector could – and should – bear serious legal ramifications. For President Obama, however, it helped secure enough votes to pass Obamacare, and win reelection.

Elouina:
He also used this false representation to get votes, so now we also have ELECTION FRAUD.

And mark my words yet again, this mess will fall apart!

Elounia
Mark my words, Obama is going to be illegally tampering with the Obamacare rules as long as it exists. But band-aids will not fix this mess.

For the last few days I keep hearing about Obamacare being referred to as the Titanic.

ATS – Elouina – The Obamacare Titanic Thread – Lets Watch It Sink Together

News – The Titanic failure of Affordable Health Care as the Obamacare ship sinks

The Washington Times:
We are watching as rats — the Congressional Democrats — quickly swim away from the damage they have caused; the people in steerage — the individual insured who lost their policies — drown in the wreckage; and the first class passengers — the young, healthy, and those who can afford to pay higher premiums — locate to the few available life boats. Unlike the movie Titanic, this is not a scripted love story based upon true events, but a real-life tragedy happening to Americans who can ill afford it.

Here are some of the sinking Titanic themed comments from throughout my thread.

Elouina:
-This is the official thread for watching Obamacare’s failure leading to its ultimate crash into the dark abyss.
-But he would have to admit this early on and not just when the ship starts taking on water.
-Oh yeah and don’t forget to bring some popcorn to this bon-voyage party!
-The ship is still sinking… I think the Obama admin should go down with the ship!
-Que fog horn, we are getting closer…
-It looks like we are all in this same ship together now, aren’t we?

Here is senator Johnson’s video in case you want to watch it. The transcript is in the link above.

Obama: Unlike Cruz, I Didn"t Seek Media Attention As Senator

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Barack Obama says freshmen senators who seek attention by playing to political extremes are behaving in a way that’s not good for government.

Obama was asked about senators such as Republicans Ted Cruz of Texas and Rand Paul of Kentucky who are playing high-profile roles during their first terms, in part by opposing Obama’s agenda.

Obama says he recognizes that being controversial and rallying extreme parts of a political base are the fastest ways to get attention and fund raise.

But he says it isn’t good for the people lawmakers are serving.

Obama says as a first-term senator, he didn’t seek media attention or try to shut down government. He says he must remind lawmakers that real people’s lives are at stake.

Obama spoke during an Associated Press interview.

Video: WATCH Crazy Senator Claim Obama “Cut The Deficit In Half”

Sen. Barbara Boxer (D-CA) claimed on Friday that the federal budget deficit has “been cut in half” under Obama.

Budget figures provided by the White House show that the deficit nearly tripled from 2008 to 2009, when Obama took office, and has remained above $ 1 trillion since then, though 2013 projections are slightly lower.

The country has seen higher budget deficits during every year of Obama’s presidency than it did during any of his predecessor’s eight years in office.

Senator Says Politics Have Reached Civil War Levels

Matt Berman

September 27, 2013

As the clock ticks down toward a possible government shutdown, Sen. Tom Harkin, D-Iowa, isn’t holding back.

On the Senate floor before 10 a.m. Friday, the senator gave a speech describing how American politics have reached the level at which “a small group of willful men and women who have a certain ideology”—read: the tea party and Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas—have been able to take over the congressional budget debate in the last week. “Since they can’t get their way,” Harkin said, “they’re going to create this confusion and discourse and hope that the public will be so mixed up in who is to blame for this, that they’ll blame both sides.”

This isn’t just congressional business as usual, Harkin said. It’s much, much more dire:

King says the callers need to know ‘they’re following a false leader.’

Rep. Peter King, who has pulled no punches in criticizing Ted Cruz, said Thursday that supporters of the Texas senator have been bombarding his office with “vile” phone calls.

The New York Republican has called Cruz a fraud for his calls to defund Obamacare, and said the senator’s campaign this summer to get the House to pass a government funding bill that defunds the health care law led to some offensive phone calls to King’s office.

“The vehemence of the phone calls coming into the office. I don’t care, people can call me whatever they want … I haven’t heard such vile, profane, obscene language,” King said on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe” on Thursday.

King said while the majority of Cruz fans are “good people,” he’s concerned about what sentiments Cruz has preyed on. While he doesn’t know if Republicans can reach Cruz, they should try to “heal tensions” with his supporters, he said.

“I’m not saying Ted Cruz is responsible for all his supporters, but he has tapped into a dark strain here in the American political psyche here, and again, the most obscene, profane stuff you can imagine all from people who say they support the Constitution,” King said. “I think what we have to do is reach out to his people and let them know that they’re following a false leader here.”

WASHINGTON | Wed Sep 25, 2013 6:58am EDT

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – Republican Senator Ted Cruz slogged into the second day of his marathon attack on Obamacare from the Senate floor on Wednesday, showing almost no signs of relenting after speaking for nearly 16 hours.

Standing in a nearly empty Senate chamber, Cruz made his case to deny funding to implement President Barack Obama’s landmark overhaul of the U.S. healthcare system, calling it the country’s “biggest jobs killer.”

Most of the Tea Party firebrand’s Republican colleagues shunned his diatribe against the health insurance reform law, which is delaying Senate consideration of a stop-gap funding measure needed to avoid a government shutdown in six days.

Elected from Texas last November, Cruz at times strides the Capitol attired in cowboy boots. But on Wednesday morning, his feet were clad in tennis shoes. In black, they matched his suit.

“Obamacare isn’t working,” the Texas Republican said in between stories about the struggles of his Cuban immigrant father and reciting Doctor Seuss verse. A professed carnivore, he recounted the tribulations of Christmas dinner with his future wife’s vegetarian family.

Cruz began talking at 2:41 p.m. (1841 GMT) on Tuesday. His performance had the look of a filibuster, a procedural hurdle used to block legislation. Except in this case, it won’t.

Under Senate rules, Cruz must yield the floor by noon (1600 GMT) on Wednesday for a procedural vote that will start the Senate towards final passage of the bill to keep government agencies funded through November 15 — including Obamacare money.

In the early hours of Wednesday morning, Cruz was joined on the Senate floor only by Republican Senator Mike Lee of Utah, who provided him short breaks from speaking. Lee and Cruz spent the summer whipping up conservative anger against the healthcare law.

As dawn approached, Sen. Marco Rubio of Florida, also a Tea Party conservative, took the lectern, giving a Cruz a break, which the Texas lawmaker used to stretch with knee bends on the Senate’s floor.

Republicans agree with Cruz’ contention that Obamacare is a “disaster,” but most of the 46 Senate Republicans are expected to line up instead with their party leaders in support of the emergency spending bill.

Cruz wants to block the funding measure unless it contains no money to implement Obamacare.

Polls show most Americans oppose the health care law despite its goals of providing healthcare coverage to millions of uninsured people, but even more oppose a government shutdown.

Provided Cruz can remain on his feet, he could go on for several more hours until a procedural vote scheduled for midday on Wednesday.

“I intend to speak in support of defunding Obamacare until I am no longer able to stand,” he said as he started his pitch.

Cruz went on to talk about his father “flippin’ pancakes,” making “green eggs and ham,” “the travesty of Obamacare,” and, proudly, about his unpopularity among many fellow Republicans.

Practically every day, he said: “I now pick up the newspaper to learn what a scoundrel I am.”

The Republican-controlled House of Representatives last week passed a version of the spending measure that denied funds to Obamacare. That will be stripped from the Senate version, which also will be shorter to

The House will have to decide whether to pass the revised bill or find a compromise with the Senate. Unless new funding is quickly approved, a government shutdown would begin on Tuesday.

At this point, it is unclear what the House Republican leadership would do, generating plenty of anxiety among their own members.

A House aide said of her boss: “He is definitely stressed.”

The aide said the congressman opposes a shutdown but is under pressure from constituents to stop Obamacare.

Republicans uniformly want to repeal Obamacare. But many see that as a political impossibility as long as Democrats control the Senate and hold the presidency.

ON NOTICE

Club for Growth, a conservative group influential among Republicans, put senators on notice that it expected them to support Cruz’s bid and block Democrats from eliminating the provision to defund Obamacare.

But Cruz’s fellow Republicans were moving in the other direction one day after the party’s top two leaders in the Senate, Mitch McConnell and John Cornyn, refused to lend their support to Cruz.

Senator Orrin Hatch, the senior Republican on the Finance Committee that oversees Obamacare, announced he would side with McConnell rather than Cruz.

Senator Lindsey Graham said he expects a majority of the Senate’s Republicans to reject Cruz’s strategy, which risks a government shutdown that would likely be blamed on Republicans.

“I think most Republicans believe, no matter how sincere you are about defunding Obamacare, that this approach would blow up in our face,” Graham said.

Once the battle over the government funding bill is resolved, Congress will grapple with another fiscal crisis – a possible and unprecedented U.S. government default unless it agrees to raise the $ 16.7 trillion U.S. borrowing authority by sometime next month or early November.

Republicans are expected to place demands on any bill to increase the debt limit, including one to delay for a year implementation of Obamacare, now set to begin kicking in next month.

Senator Warns Obama Not to Implement UN Arms Treaty

Kerry to sign controversial treaty today

U.S. Senator Bob Corker, R-Tenn., ranking member of the Foreign Relations Committee, has warned President Obama not to implement the controversial UN Arms Treaty, which John Kerry is likely to sign today, without congressional authorization.

The treaty – which critics have warned could lead to draconian gun control measures in the United States – is based around preventing illicit global weapons transfers to terrorists and other rogue agents, but its language could easily be interpreted to infringe on Second Amendment rights domestically.

Despite warnings from lawmakers that the agreement will be not ratified by the Senate, Secretary of State John Kerry is set to sign the UN treaty today, prompting Senator Corker to warn President Obama that any attempt to implement the measures without congressional consent “would be fundamentally inconsistent with the U.S. Constitution, law, and practice.”

“Because of the concerns discussed above, as well as the fundamental issues the ATT raises with respect to the individual rights protected by the Second Amendment of the United States Constitution, as the Ranking Member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, it is my view that you may not take any executive action to implement this treaty, provisionally or otherwise, unless and until: (1) the United States Senate has provided its constitutionally required advice and consent to its ratification; and (2) the Congress has passed any and all required legislation to bring this treaty into effect under United States domestic law,” writes Corker.

Despite 130 members of Congress writing a letter to Obama and Kerry back in May demanding they refuse to sign the treaty, Kerry is set to do so anyway, proving in the eyes of Sen. Jim Inhofe, R-Okla. that, “The administration is wasting precious time trying to sign away our laws to the global community and unelected U.N. bureaucrats.”

Earlier this year, the Senate already passed an amendment by 53-46 to “to uphold Second Amendment rights and prevent the United States from entering into the United Nations Arms Trade Treaty,” a vote that has been ignored by the White House.

Analysts who have studied the treaty warn that it effectively replaces constitutional rights, including the Second Amendment, with the UN Charter, supplanting God with global government as the source of all liberties.

According to John Lott, author of More Guns, Less Crime, “The Arms Trade Treaty will regulate individual gun ownership all across the world. Each country will be obligated to “maintain a national control list that shall include [rifles and handguns]” and “to regulate brokering taking place under its jurisdiction for conventional arms.”

The treaty also bars “unauthorized” individuals from trading weapons, a vague term that could be applied to just about anyone.

Dear President Obama,

It is my understanding that Secretary of State John Kerry will sign the United Nations Arms Trade Treaty (ATT) on behalf of the United States. The ATT raises significant legislative and constitutional questions. Any act to implement this treaty, provisionally or otherwise, before the Congress provides its advice and consent would be inconsistent with the United States Constitution, law, and practice.

As you know, Article II, Section 2 of the United States Constitution requires the United States Senate to provide its advice and consent before a treaty becomes binding under United States law. The Senate has not yet provided its advice and consent, and may not provide such consent. As a result, the Executive Branch is not authorized to take any steps to implement the treaty.

Moreover, even after the Senate provides its advice and consent, certain treaties require changes to United States law in the form of legislation passed by both the House and Senate. The ATT is such a treaty. Various provisions of the ATT, including but not limited to those related to the regulation of imports and trade in conventional arms, require such implementing legislation and relate to matters exclusively reserved to Congress under our Constitution.

Because of the concerns discussed above, as well as the fundamental issues the ATT raises with respect to the individual rights protected by the Second Amendment of the United States Constitution, as the Ranking Member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, it is my view that you may not take any executive action to implement this treaty, provisionally or otherwise, unless and until: (1) the United States Senate has provided its constitutionally required advice and consent to its ratification; and (2) the Congress has passed any and all required legislation to bring this treaty into effect under United States domestic law.

Sincerely,

Senator Bob Corker
Ranking Member
