US Soldier Watches Helplessly as His Pregnant Wife is Stabbed During Home Invasion that Interrupted Their Video Chat

A soldier deployed overseas was video chatting with his pregnant wife, who was one week from her due date, when something unforeseen occurred. No, it was her water breaking or labor pains. Instead, his pregnant wife literally labored for her life and the life of her unborn child after a burglar started stabbing her in real time.

KFOX14 reported that Corey Moss, a 19-year-old Fort Bliss soldier, went to the Pooles’ residence to talk to Rachel Poole about money he owed her husband, who is stationed in southwest Asia. However, after realizing that she wasn’t home, he didn’t simply leave. Instead, he broke into the house and waited for her.

Upon returning home, unaware that an intruder was lying in wait, Rachel began video chatting with her husband Justin.

That’s when the knife-wielding Moss lunged from behind and stabbed her multiple times in her body and face.

All the while, the horrified husband, who was thousands of miles away, was helplessly listening to the brutal assault.

According to the affidavit, Rachel immediately recognized Moss and cleverly yelled his name several times during the attack so that her husband could identify him.

It worked.

Following the attack, Moss fled to Fort Bliss military base. He was unaware that Justin Poole had called in advance and alerted them to the crime. Additionally, Rachel called the local police and gave them his name.

As a result, he was detained by the military police. The knife was also recovered.

EL Paso Police said that he admitted to the offense and was charged with criminal attempted capital murder. I’m no lawyer, but I think he should’ve been charged with two counts of attempted capital murder.

Fortunately, in spite of Rachel needing surgery for her wounds and fractures, the unborn baby girl, who the couple plans to name Isabella, is in good condition.

On his Facebook page, Justin vented, “I promised to give my life for this freedom not the other way around. I failed her but never again.”

Let’s hope the justice system doesn’t “fail” this family and this perp receives what he deserves.

Florida Teen Tweets Selfie With Pregnant Teacher "Going Into Labor"

Florida high school student Malik Whiter has gone bonkers viral to the tune of 20,000+ retweets after posting a selfie while his pregnant teacher was experiencing contractions.

Millennials, man. Millennials.

The teacher, Susana Halleck, was on the phone telling her mother the situation was under control. (And it turned out that she wasn’t going into labor just yet as well.)

There’s so much to love here, from Whiter’s sheer joy and winning smile to his teacher’s “Oh my god I cannot have a baby in math class” expression. The image is already inspiring parodies of Malik taking selfies at what might charitably be described as inappropriate times (credits to Gawker commenters):

And of course this happened in Florida, America’s unsecured junk. Because where else?

Pushed Off The Job While Pregnant

At a time when most pregnant women work, there are new efforts to keep companies from unfairly targeting employees because of a pregnancy. The allegations of pregnancy discrimination persist and have even risen in recent years despite a decades-old law against it, according to the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission.

Advocates say those most vulnerable are low-wage workers like Natasha Jackson, a former account representative at Rent-A-Center in Charleston, S.C. She cajoled customers to pay up and occasionally delivered heavy rental furniture. After she became pregnant in the spring of 2008, co-workers helped out with deliveries. Then “one morning I came in and I was told I had to wait to clock in until I spoke to both the district manager and the head of human resources,” she says.

They told her about another pregnant employee who’d hurt herself lifting a rental TV. They put Jackson on two weeks’ paid vacation and sent a medical form for her doctor to fill out. The doctor wrote that — as with many pregnant women — Jackson shouldn’t lift more than 20 pounds.

If you think you’ve experienced pregnancy discrimination at work, here’s a list of places that might be able to help.

9 to 5 National Association of Working Women 800-522-0925 or email helpline@9to5.org

A Better Balance 212-430-5982

Equal Rights Advocates 800-839-4372

EEOC 800-669-4000

“When I guess they read that, that’s what they started to use to keep me out of work,” Jackson says.

Jackson made more than her husband, who was working temporary jobs at the time. When the head of human resources told her she’d have to go on unpaid leave, she says she became distraught on the phone with him.

“So he told me, ‘Calm down, you still probably can get a job somewhere. Try to find a job bagging groceries or something,’ ” she recalls.

“We all think that pregnancy discrimination is illegal, but what has happened is the way that law has been interpreted,” says Dina Bakst, co-president of A Better Balance, an advocacy group that pushes for family-friendly work policies.

Bakst says courts have interpreted the 1978 Pregnancy Discrimination Act narrowly, allowing employers to deny the same kinds of accommodations they make for those with on-the-job injuries, say a pulled muscle or broken bone.

Recognizing such limitations, when Congress expanded the Americans with Disabilities Act in 2008, regulators interpreted it to include pregnancy-related impairments. But — and this is a point feminists have long insisted upon — advocate Bakst says normal pregnancy is not a disability.

“What pregnant women typically need are really routine, modest accommodations,” she says. “An extra bathroom break, a stool, a water bottle.”

These may be simple things, yet they’re sometimes denied, especially to low-wage workers.

Bakst says she recently heard from an emergency room doctor in New York who had treated a pregnant retail worker after she fainted and collapsed from severe dehydration. The woman was not allowed to drink water while standing for hours behind the cash register. To address a situation like that, Congress is trying another legislative fix to more clearly spell out the obligations of employers.

Rep. Jerrold Nadler, D-N.Y., recently introduced the House version of the Pregnant Workers Fairness Act.

“The bill says exactly as the [Americans with Disabilities] Act says: An employer must make a reasonable accommodation provided it’s not an undue hardship,” Nadler says.

It’s similar to existing state law in California and newly proposed legislation in New York. But so far there are no Republican co-sponsors, and business groups have declined to take a position.

“As a defense lawyer, I question the notion that the law needs amendment or the law has some holes in it,” says Gerry Maatman of Seyfarth Shaw. He notes the EEOC has listed pregnancy discrimination as one of its top emerging issues.

“A lot of enforcement dollars and effort will be undertaken by the EEOC, with or without any amendments to the law,” he says. “I think that advocates are, in essence, just shining a spotlight on an issue that is certainly one that’s being litigated on a daily basis in the federal courts.”

To be sure, the legal process is helping some. Just last month, a Florida hospital settled with a housekeeper who was pushed out after suffering from pregnancy-induced carpal tunnel syndrome. She will now be allowed to return to work after maternity leave.

But the story is not the same for numerous others, including Jackson, the woman forced out of a furniture rental company because she couldn’t lift heavy things. She never did get her job back.

“Everything from that moment in my life took just a down spiral,” she says. “I never recovered from it.”

Jackson and her husband had to back out of buying their first house. They took a financial hit with her many months of unpaid leave. They’re now divorcing. Jackson contested the loss of her job, but after three years, an arbitrator decided that it was perfectly legal.

Baby scam tricked clients to look pregnant

Pregnant hostages

BORN TO ORDER: Police discovered pregnant teenagers in a raid on a compound. Source: Supplied

FOR nine months, the midwife had been giving the woman herbs to take and several things indicated she was indeed pregnant. Her stomach had swelled, so had her feet.

She had spent many years trying to conceive and now, at 61, she was finally with child, twins in fact – or so she thought.

Even when it came time to give birth, the woman still believed she was an expectant mother. She went back to the midwife, was given seeds to chew and started feeling drowsy.

The woman, Desope Cecilia, says the midwife told her to start pushing and that soon after she heard the cry of one baby and then another. Her miracle babies.

There was even blood, making the delivery scenario all the more real.

It wasn’t until some time later, when she took the twins to be immunised, that someone smelled a rat and alerted authorities.

Tests confirmed that Cecilia was not the mother of the two babies.

She had paid 1.5 million naira ($ 9800) for the services of the midwife, Oby George, in Port Harcourt in Nigeria’s south.

She had never been to a hospital to have a scan of any kind during her so-called pregnancy because the midwife had told her not to.

Apparently, she told Cecilia the scan would show nothing because she was carrying a “miracle” pregnancy.

Miracle indeed – a $ 9800 miracle which was highly illegal.

Cecilia wasn’t the midwife’s only victim.

Joy Ibe, 43, also wanted babies – miracle triplets. She paid about $ 17,500.

But despite having a protruding stomach and swollen feet, she never got to “give birth”.

She was at the midwife’s home when police arrived.

She too had been told not to go to the hospital for scans or check-ups.

So desperate were both women for children that they were willing to fork out huge sums of money to a dodgy midwife.

Both claim they had no idea their pregnancies were not real.

In Cecilia’s case, she truly believed she had given birth.

It seems that the herbs the women were prescribed formed a kind of large tumour in the stomach, causing the protrusion and the belief that it was a pregnant belly.

George has apparently said she doesn’t remember how many such miracle babies she has delivered. Police suspect it’s many.

George and her two victims were revealed to the media by police in Lagos a week ago.

George was paraded and her victims, their faces covered, answered questions about their ordeals.

The revelation comes in the same month as Nigerian police uncovered and raided two so-called “baby factories”.

It’s not known where the babies George was delivering came from but it is known that unscrupulous types have been holding young women and teenage girls basically hostage and forcing them to have babies, which are then sold.

Based on the accounts of the victims, some are forced to become pregnant at the factories and others are brought to the factory already pregnant and told they will be paid for their babies.

This has been an easy way to lure young, unmarried women who face shame in their communities as a result of such pregnancies.

One baby factory was in Imo State, in the southeast, where 20 pregnant teenage girls and 11 babies were found. Local media reported the girls told police they had been made pregnant by a young man at the compound.

Another baby factory was uncovered in Enugu State about the same time. Six young pregnant girls were found and the owner reportedly told police that he was doing a service for childless couples. Not medically trained, he was apparently delivering the babies himself.

Authorities believe the two operations uncovered with pregnant girls are not the only baby factories out there.

They have vowed to hunt down others who are also taking advantage of young, poor and vulnerable teenagers and of women desperate for babies.

Such rackets are nothing new in Nigeria and especially in the southeastern region.

A multitude of problems and poor systems allow the baby factories to exist and flourish.

But the bottom line is this: Babies are little humans and they shouldn’t be sold and traded, like apples at the market.
