On February 25 at 5:59 a.m., the Monterey County Sheriff’s Department, Salinas Police Department and the FBI orchestrated the simultaneous arrests of six King City police officers. Included in the apprehensions for corruption charges were former Police Chief Nick Baldiviez, acting Police Chief Bruce Miller and his civilian brother Brian Miller.

Targeting Hispanic residents, Sgt. Bobby Carrillo allegedly received a free vehicle for every 10-15 cars he had impounded. Monterey County District Attorney Dean Flippo believes Sgt. Carrillo received at least five vehicles and gave one to acting Police Chief Bruce Miller, who was Carrillo’s captain at the time.

At a press conference, District Attorney Flippo stated, “The victims were economically disadvantaged persons of Hispanic descent who were targeted by having their vehicles impounded, towed and stored by Miller’s Towing.”

The owner of Miller’s Towing, Brian Miller, is the brother of acting Police Chief Bruce Miller. After forced to wait 30 days, the owners of the confiscated vehicles found themselves unable to pay the exorbitant impound fees and their cars turned over to California’s King City police officers.

Brian Miller reportedly bribed his brother, acting chief Bruce Miller, with an impounded Nissan Sentra.

Because the victims were disadvantaged Latino residents, prosecutor Steve Somers considered charging the officers with hate crimes. Somers concluded the victims had instead been targeted because they had been socioeconomically vulnerable, not out of racial discrimination.

“While I hope this is an isolated incident, I fear it is not,” admitted State Senator Bill Monning. “There continues to be situations throughout the state where the immigrant workforce is subjugated to tyranny of those abusing their authority.”

Former Police Chief Baldiviez has been charged with embezzlement by a public officer for transferring ownership of a 2001 Ford Crown Victoria to Officer Mario Mottu, Sr. Although the city manager had authorized Baldiviez to give the vehicle to the King City Police Explorers, Baldiviez handed the title over to Mottu instead.

In 2010, Police Chief Baldiviez was placed on administrative leave after officers claimed he had arrived intoxicated at multiple crime scenes. Listed as a defendant in a lawsuit against the King City Police Department, Baldiviez has also been accused of authorizing excessive force against the Madriz family during an April 2012 raid, based on their ethnicity. As the District Attorney’s Office began investigating his department, Baldiviez retired in September 2013 leaving Miller as acting chief.

Unrelated to the impound scheme, Sgt. Mark Baker has been charged with making criminal threats against a local resident named Leon Rosalio Infante.

Officer Jaime Andrade has been charged with possession of an assault weapon and illegal storage of a firearm. While in possession of a semiautomatic Colt AR-15, Andrade allegedly left the gun at his stepson’s residence where “a child was likely to gain access to it.”

All six police officers have made bail and been placed on paid administrative leave.

According to Chief Assistant District Attorney Terry Spitz, the D.A.’s office has already dismissed at least 3 criminal cases due to the lack of credibility of these accused cops. Each case associated with them is now under review determining whether or not to proceed without the officers’ testimonies.

During the press conference, District Attorney Flippo claimed the FBI’s involvement in the arrests was unrelated to the investigation of bank robbery cash that went missing after recovered by the King City Police Department last year.

“I was aware of the investigations,” admitted acting Police Chief Miller, “but I didn’t know that I would become a suspect.”

King City resident Vivian Villa stated, “I’m not at all surprised by the arrests, I’m just surprised there weren’t more charges.”

Former Ukrainian Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko was released from jail on Saturday, after ousted president Viktor Yanukovich fled Kiev. The opposition leader has announced that she will run for president, and German Chancellor Angela Merkel has already welcomed her back to the public stage. (Tymoshenko supports integrating Ukraine into the European Union.) But some fear her return to politics, claiming she"s just as corrupt as Yanukovich. Edward Lucas, a senior editor at The Economist, insists, "The truth is that her determination is terrifying. Nobody and nothing gets in her way. When she needs to, she is prepared to use her undeniable sexual magnetism."

In the same Daily Mail column, Lucas warns, "don"t be fooled by [Tymoshenko"s] angelic looks." He continues, "I have interviewed her many times. Her body language, eyes, coquettish tosses of the head and cooing tones are almost hypnotic. But she is also capable of explosive anger. I have seen her shriek and curse in terrifying eruptions of rage: the kitten turns into a tigress." Lucas uses almost every sexist cliche imaginable about powerful women in an attempt to discredit her. According to him, Tymoshenko "believes in horoscopes and psychics," is "prone to irrational, often self-aggrandising flights of fancy" and can"t work in a team. "Aides and colleagues are expected to guess what she wants and do it. If they get it wrong, she erupts," he writes. She apparently even uses her womanhood to scare men:

An ambassador once told me that a two-hour journey he spent in her sound-proofed, tinted-window limousine was the most sexually threatening experience of his life.

Lucas isn"t the only one to come up with these criticisms, though his column is the most egregious example. The Daily Beast"s Christopher Dickey agrees that Tymoshenko is "no angel." He argues, "there’s no doubt that the fire of a hugely ambitious politician still burns hot behind the iconic face and hair of the fairy tale princess."

Tymoshenko didn"t always have her signature blonde hair folded into halo braids — before she became prime minister, she was brunette. But in consultation with a PR firm, Tymoshenko developed her look to represent the softer, more feminine Urkranian woman. Her hairdo alludes to patriotism and sainthood. It was a calculated political move, sure, but one she felt she had to make to succeed as a woman in Ukraine"s political sphere. As Dickey explains, she was a "hard-bitten ice queen" before the transformation. Welcome to 2014, where female leaders are either frigid or sexually dangerous.

Benjamin Smith allegedly yelled “Bush will get his,” after he was arrested Friday in midtown Manhattan, where he was found in his car with a rifle, machete, gasoline and two boxes of ammonization, according to the complaint.

A group of US senators introduced an anti-Iran bill.

A new report has revealed the names of 15 Democratic senators who are threatening to push the United States into a war with Iran by introducing a new sanctions bill.

The Huffington Post on Monday named the anti-Iran senators, who introduced the bill last week. Nineteen Republican senators also cosponsored the legislation.

Under a nuclear agreement reached in Geneva last month, the United States should not impose fresh economic sanctions against Iran over the next six months.

Senator Bob Menendez (D-N.J.) is leading the charge to pass legislation in January that would impose additional sanctions on Iran.

Other Democratic senators are Sen. Mark Begich (Alaska), Sen. Richard Blumenthal (Conn.), Sen. Cory Booker (N.J.), Sen. Ben Cardin (Md.), Sen. Bob Casey (Pa.), Sen. Chris Coons (Del.), Sen. Joe Donnelly (Ind.), Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand (N.Y.), Sen. Kay Hagan (N.C.), Sen. Mary Landrieu (La.), Sen. Joe Manchin (W.Va.), Sen. Mark Pryor (Ark.), Sen. Charles Schumer (N.Y.) and Sen. Mark Warner (Va.).

The bill proposes boycotting Iranian oil exports within a year and the blacklisting of Iran’s mining, engineering and construction industries.

The Senate bill also calls for “diplomatic, military and economic support” to Israel in case Tel Aviv decides to launch an attack against Iran’s nuclear energy program.

President Barack Obama, however, threatened to veto the bill introduced in the Senate.

He also warned that the United States should not impose further sanctions against Iran “if we are serious” about seeking a final agreement.

“There is no need for new sanctions legislation. Not yet,” Obama said. “It’s not going to be hard for us to turn the dials back, strengthen the sanctions even further. I’ll work with members of Congress to put even more pressure on Iran.”

Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif had warned that the Geneva agreement will be “dead” if Washington imposes new sanctions.

Hume: Threatening Government Shutdown As A Way Of Forcing Policy "Is A Loser"

BRIT HUME: No, I know. But look, I said this is — government shutdown as a way of forcing policy when you control one House of the legislature is a loser. Now, people like Ted Cruz who Senator Ted Cruz who is one of the main leaders on this issue and certainly one of its principal spokesmen believes that the political conditions are different now from the ones that prevailed in 1995. And in some respects they are. But in one respect they’re different and not in a way that’s helpful to his cause, which is that the Republican Party is in much worse favor with the public than it was in 1995 when people had just installed a new House Republican majority for the first time in decades, and my sense about this is that the sort of axiom in Washington that when the government shuts down, it doesn’t matter who causes it. Republicans get blamed is still in effect. And this is a very risky proposition.

Now, Cruz and company say, you can win the vote, if you win the argument. Well, they’re out trying to win the argument now, and they’re trying to provoke something along the lines of what happened on guns. When a popular sentiment just rose up and next thing you know, no bill passed. What remains to be seen if they can do that. I have real doubts.
